WHAT IS DISTRIBUTION?This is the way in which something is shared out or

spread to others in an area. What does a distributor need to do?• They will be responsible for marketing the film• Get cinemas to show the film • Find out who would want to see the film• Work out how much profit, revenue and sales that

can be made from it

EXAMPLES OF DISTRIBUTION COMPANIES • Warner bros • Sony Pictures • Fox Distribution company • Paramount Pictures

WHICH DISTRIBUTION COMPANY DO YOU THINK WOULD TAKE ON YOUR FILM?When we were making our opening and gaining ideas,

one of the many films we researched was The Girl On The Train (2016). The distribution company for this film was Universal Studios. The Girl On the Train is thriller about an alcoholic divorcee who becomes involved in a missing persons investigation. Therefore, due to the similarities that are film share, we believe that this company would be keen to distribute and take on our film. Also, the company has no particular interest in genres so I believe they would be happy to distribute our film.

WHICH AUDIENCE DO YOU THINK YOUR FILM WILL APPEAL TOWARDS?After researching the two other films that we used when

making our opening, The Night Of and The Girl On The Train, therefore we can look at the audiences that they attracted as they will be similar to ours.

When researching about the type of audience for the girl on the train, we found out a comparable profile. Therefore we can use this to find out what kind of audience our film would interest. As you can see in the table below the majority of people that went to see a similar film were either ages 15-24 or 45+. We can now use this to say that we believe that the main viewers of our piece will be between the ages of 18-25 and then there is a gap before reaching the 45+ interests. Aside from ages, we can also look at the gender popularity of the film. From this we are able to see that it is more popular with the female gender as oppose to male. This may be due to the fact that males are more into action/adventure films as oppose to a thriller.

In terms of the range of our opening and its appeal, I believe that it will mainly interest people from the UK as it is a low budget film and may struggle to contend with the other thrillers made in places such as America with higher budgets.

MARKETING STRATEGIES, RELEASE STRATEGIES AND EXHIBITION OPTIONS The build up to the release of the film is always key as it can be the difference to a

successful film and one that fails. The main ways that I believe would be best for advertising would be through the use of TV, Radio and social media.

This is probably the most popular way of advertising for a film as it can access such a wide range of different people from all areas. Also, other than advert a company could approach a show that often shows upcoming films as a preview, this would be good viewers will be watching to find out about films that are set to come out in the future.

In terms of the radio, I feel as though this would be key as the audience for our piece will be from around 18-25. Therefore these audience members will be driving and henceforth listening to the radio in the car. This means that our target audience can hear about the film over a widespread area.

Finally, in terms of social media, like the radio I believe this would be aimed mostly to our preferred target audience. This is due to the use of social media by the younger generation of around 18-25. Making it a good method of advertising for the upcoming film as they will be able to see it advertised on apps such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

SELF DISTRIBUTION Self distributing is when you do not try and find a great

well known distributor of films and instead you take it into your own hands to advertise the film.

One thing that you can do in order to self distribute your film is too hire a publicist or someone else that can help raise your films awareness.

However doing this will still come with a price so it is much better to follow in the footsteps of other self distributors. A lot of them have said that they travelled up and down the country raising awareness by getting them selves in the public eye whether it be on the news on radio promoting their new up and coming film.
