    What is a Piperack

  • Presentation Outline

    Purpose of Presentation

    Types of Piperack Systems

    Construction Materials

    Details of Continuous Piperack System

    Training Module2

  • Purpose of Presentation

To know what is a Piperack mean

To understand various components of Piperacks for

    Modeling in PDS etc.,

How to read the Structural Steel Section / Shape

Dimensions and Sizes for the shapes which are used in

    Piperack structure for Modeling

  • Types of Piperack Systems

Two basic types of structural Piperack systems

    Continuous Piperack system

A number of 2D frames or bents spaced typically at 20

tied together in the longitudinal direction with struts and vertical

bracing to form a 3D space frame arrangement.

Non continuous Piperack system (Goal Post type)

Independent freestanding cantilevered 2D frames and anchor bays.

May be utilized for long uniform runs of product lines, flare or

tank farm piping usually outside battery limit. Frame spacing may be

increased up to 40 ft (12m).

    COLUMNS

Non-Continuous Piperacks are not common in use

(except for Flare Lines & Tank Farm Pipelines)

  • Construction Material

    Steel

    Concrete

    (But generally Steel is widely

    used Material for Piperacks)

    Training Module10

  • Design Coordination

The following should be coordinated by Civil with the

Plant Design, Electrical, and Control Systems groups

before the start of detailed design:

Bent Spacing. Normally 20 for economical design.

    Elevations of support levels.

    Elevation of the longitudinal struts.

Locations of vertical bracings and braced bays.

Should be away from pumps and other equipment at

    grade level.

Minimum Clearance required by applicable codes or

    for maintenance purpose.

  • Frames

    Training Module13

Piperack consists of Bents (or) Frames see attached sample

These Frames (or) Bents are generally spaced at 20 for economical

    design

  • Transverse Beams

    Training Module14

Transverse Beams are Main Members (beams) which are directly

supporting the Pipes & Cable Trays TRANSVERSE BEAMS

  • Longitudinal Beam Struts Longitudinal Beam Struts are side beams tied between to bents or

frames along the Piperack. These are required to transfer the

longitudinal pipe forces along the Piperack.

In the longitudinal direction there should be at least one

continuous level of beam struts on each side to carry the

longitudinal forces transmitted through the beam struts to the

    base plate and foundation levels.

  • Vertical Bracing

Vertical bracing is used to transmit the longitudinal forces from

the beam struts to the foundations. Knee-bracing or K-bracing is

most often used for this purpose.
