The sounds of the big bands will fill the Oakville Centrefor the Performing Arts on Sunday afternoon when IntradaBrass of Oakville presents Swing’s The Thing … Musicthat’s Sassy and Brassy.
Providing a lot of the swing and the sass will be jazztrumpeter Paul Stevenson, star of Jeans ‘n’ Classics withOrchestra London Canada.
Stevenson has been described as having the power andrange of Canada’s own Maynard Ferguson and the cool ofMiles Davis.
“Paul brings a lot of energy and fun to his performanc-es,” says IBO music director Bram Gregson. “Althoughwe’ve rehearsed with Paul, we know that almost anythingcan happen once he gets on stage.”
Stevenson will demonstrate both sides of his musicalpersonality with songs like Bridge Over Troubled Water inthe Maynard Ferguson arrangement, and Misty, recallingMiles Davis on flügelhorn.
The band will re-create the sounds and music of thelikes of Billy May, Harry James, Count Basie, the Dorseysand Maynard Ferguson.
There will also be examples of ragtime and gospel.Swing’s The Thing will be at the Oakville Centre for the

SWINGING SOUNDS: Jazz trumpeter Paul Stevenson will perform with the Intrada Brass of Oakville during the Swing’s TheThing concert at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts on Sunday.
An Artful Afternoon will take place at the Old PalermoSchool House on Sunday, March 30.
From 2-5 p.m., paintings by local artists will be fea-tured at the event, hosted by Trafalgar TownshipHistorical Society.
The exhibition will feature the original artwork ofThelma Ledgerwood’s Palette Pals.
Artists include Michele Arishenkoff, ElizabethDoucette, Cher Guest, Kanishka Baduge, MéropeLedgerwood, Thelma Ledgerwood, Stuart McCulloch,Emma Bramma Smith, Anne Smith, Shirley Tilden, CarolTuck and John Venner.
An Artful Afternoon will also include wine, cheese andlight refreshments in the setting of the cozy, historicalschool house.
Those attending can enter a free draw to win an origi-nal work by Ledgerwood.

The Oakville Chamber Ensemble’s Stamitz vs.Stamitz concert will be changing venues.
The concert, slated for Saturday, at 7:30 p.m., willnow be held at Trafalgar Presbyterian Church ofLitchfield Road.
The orchestra of the Oakville Chamber Ensemble willpresent a program of string music by Johann and CarlStamitz. The concert features Three ManheimSymphonies by Johann Stamitz and two orchestral quar-tets by Carl Stamitz.
The Stamitz family provides a musical link from thebaroque of Bach, Handel and Vivaldi to the classical eraof Mozart and Haydn. By contrasting the senior Stamitzwith the junior Stamitz, one can hear how, with a spanof a few years, music compositions have changed and theforms have expanded.
The ensemble offers these works in a setting thatreflects the intent of composers: a small group of musi-cians playing together with verve, passion, energy, ten-derness and great enthusiasm.
Tickets cost $25, or $15 for seniors and students, and$5 for kids 15 and under.
