Upgrading Specops Deploy
• Prerequisites–MDT and ADK
• Image server• Deployment Server(s)• Deploy\APP• Client Side Extension - Demo
DEPLOY/OS
Upgrading your Client Machines
• Options to think about–Boot Image–Hardware supported – drivers?– Import new Base OS – then capture–Default or Reboot and Reformat–Default Options: Saving/discarding user data–Group policy–Applications
DEPLOY/OS
Boot Image and Drivers
• Download the latest drivers from the manufacturers website
• Create new OS folders in your driver structure under Model.
• Remember – WINPE may use a different OS version of the driver then what you are upgrading too. Update your WINPE drivers too.
DEPLOY/OS
New Operating System
• Always import new base OS into deploy first – both x86 and x64 if you are going to support both.
• Then you can add multiple capture images• Use Group Policy to filter your images– Always test first with a test OU or GPO filtered
by a security group
DEPLOY/OS
Reformat or Reinstall???
• Default reinstall – uses CSE to boot into WINPE and saves user data–After reinstallation of OS (or upgrade) all of the
profiles are copied back–Must have Deploy Client Side Extension on the client
machine–Use for local profiles only
• Reboot and Reformat – uses a PXE boot and does not save any user data.
Clean up your profiles first!
DEPLOY/OS
Applications
DEPLOY/OS
• Test/Evaluate which application work with new OS and which ones need a new version– i.e. Flash and does not work in Windows 8-10
• Create the new packages for the new software.• Update targets to include operating system
version in target criteria
Clean Up Time
DEPLOY/OS
• Remove Old Driver folders• Images (cautiously)• Packages/Deployments
