CHIMNEY FIRE FRIDAY EVENING The City of McCook Fire Department responded to a reported chim-ney fire Friday evening, November 8th. The initial call was paged out at 5:49 p.m. for a fire in the chimney of a house located at 706 West 2nd Street. The fire department responded and was on scene at 5:51 p.m. Initial arriving fire crews reported heavy smoke coming from the front door and from the eaves of the structure. Firefighters located a fire in the basement of the home and initially attacked the fire from an exterior window. Once the fire was knocked down, fire-fighters made their way into the basement and extinguished the re-maining fire. A fire investigator was requested from the State Fire Marshal’s office and determined the fire had started between the floor of the main level and the ceiling in the basement in the area of fireplace. The fire caused approximately $35,000 damage to the structure, and $90,000 to the contents. Fire Chief Harpham credits the rapid response of the volunteer firefighters and off-duty full-time staff along with the quick response of Red Willow Western Rural Fire Department when requested. This allowed us to cover the influx of calls received without a huge delay in getting all of them answered quickly. Thanks to the dedication and commitment of all involved, we were able to not miss a beat in our response.
VETERANS ARE APPRECIATED AT MPCC Veterans are appreciated at Mid-Plains Community College. That was evident from the numerous students, faculty and staff who came forward to sign cards for veterans at campuses in McCook and North Platte on Monday. Tables were set up on both the north and south campuses in North Platte as well as in the Learning Commons in McCook. Those who stopped by were treated to cookies and encour-aged to sign cards that will be distributed to veterans in local nursing homes. “Our Military Services committee at the college is involved in raising awareness for resources available to our student veterans, forming connections in our communities and recognizing our local vet-erans through a variety of events, including POW-MIA Day ceremo-nies, Veteran’s Day thank you card signings and free admission to veterans at MCC and NPCC sporting events,” said Bobbi Muehlenk-amp, area director of the Learning Commons. “We are always look-ing for more members and are especially interested in recruiting stu-dent members.”
PROMOTING NE AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTS Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts is leading a trade mission to Germany to promote Nebraska agricultural products and reinforce the state's connections with German companies. Ricketts kicked off the trade mission Sunday in Berlin, where the delegation met with government officials and hosted a reception for University of Nebraska alumni, business officials and others. The trade mission also included a new trade agreement between Chapman, Nebraska-based Preferred Popcorn and the German-based Haase Foods. Nebraska is the na-tion's largest popcorn producers, generating more than 353 million pounds annually. The delegation includes representatives from the Nebraska Departments of Economic Development; Agriculture; and Environment and Energy; and the University of Nebraska, Nebraska Farm Bureau, Omaha Public Power District and other private groups.
