The tides contain energy that can be harnessed to produce electricity. Two types of tidal energy can be extracted. Kinetic energy can be harnessed from the ebbing and surging tides. Potential energy can be harnessed from differences in the high and low tides. Using tidal currents remains the primary method of generating electricity.
Tidal power has huge potential due to the size of the oceans and predictability of the tides.

Barrage Tidal PlantsThe tidal electricity generation works as when the tide comes in and again when it is going out . The turbines are driven by the ocean in both directions.

There are currently two commercial sized barrages in operation • 240 MW turbine at La Rance, France• 16 MW plant at Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia, Canada.

2.Wave Energy:Waves are caused by a number of forces, i.e. wind,
gravitational pull from the sun and moon, changes in atmospheric pressure, earthquakes etc.
Unequal heating of the Earth’s surface generates wind, and wind blowing over water generates waves.
Eg: Oscillating Water Columns (OWC). The rising and falling water column drives air into and out of the top of the shaft, powering an air-driven turbine.
3. Ocean thermal energyIn this ocean energy idea uses temperature
differences in the ocean.
Power plants can be built that use this difference in temperature to make energy.
Using this type of energy source is called Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion or OTEC.
It is being used in both Japan and in Hawaii in some demonstration
FUTURE ASPECTSIn a society with increasing energy needs, it is
becoming more and more important to have alternative sources of power to keep up with the ever growing energy demand.
The capacity of tidal energy exceeds that of coal and oil and is renewable.
The Indian state of Gujarat is planning to host South Asia's first commercial-scale tidal power station. The company Atlantis Resources planned to install a 50MW tidal farm in the Gulf of Kutch on India's west coast, with construction starting early in 2012.[24]
Tidal Power Advantages
Once you've built it, tidal power is free.
It produces no greenhouse gases or other waste.
It needs no fuel.
It produces electricity reliably.
Not expensive to maintain.
Tides are totally predictable.
Offshore turbines and vertical-axis turbines are not ruinously expensive to build and do not have a large environmental impact.
