Demand of electricity is increasing and global warming also threaten human life. It’s time to move away from fossil fuel and other source

The tides contain energy that can be harnessed to produce electricity. Two types of tidal energy can be extracted. Kinetic energy can be harnessed from the ebbing and surging tides. Potential energy can be harnessed from differences in the high and low tides. Using tidal currents remains the primary method of generating electricity.

Tidal power has huge potential due to the size of the oceans and predictability of the tides.

Energy from the moonTides generated by the combination of the moon and sun’s

gravitational forces

Greatest affect in spring when moon and sun combine forces

for energy production, the height difference needs to be at least 5 meters

Only 40 sites around the world of this magnitude

Overall potential of 3000 gigawatts from movement of tides

There are three basic ways to tap the ocean for its energy.

1.Tidal energy

2.Wave energy

3.Ocean Thermal Energy

Tide is the periodic raising and lowering of average sea level

tidal energy, is a form of hydropower that converts the energy of tides into electricity

Tidal power will give us energy for billions of years to come.

Tidal energy is a great source of clean renewable energy. it could provide a great deal of energy

What is Tidal Energy?

Page 6: Tidel power rajiv

Tidal energy is produced using tidal energy generators. This can be done in three ways

Barrage Tidal Plants

Tidal Turbines

Tidal Fence

Types of Tidal Plants

Page 7: Tidel power rajiv

Barrage Tidal PlantsThe tidal electricity generation works as when the tide comes in and again when it is going out . The turbines are driven by the ocean in both directions.

Though they have proven very durable

barrage-style power plants are very expensive Accordingly, engineers no longer consider barrage-style tidal power is economicalLow-cost power production at very large scale

A section of the lagoon wall showing the movement of water through a turbine.

There are currently two commercial sized barrages in operation • 240 MW turbine at La Rance, France• 16 MW plant at Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia, Canada.

Page 9: Tidel power rajiv

Tidal Turbine Plantsthe tidal stream generator rotates under

water with the kinetic motions of the ocean tides harnessing the energy to produce electricity. • Turbines installed in groups

allowing for more rapid, phased build-out

• Power produced directly from tidal currents

• Should be possible to generate power from tides with limited environmental impact

• Moderate-cost power production at varying scales

2.Wave Energy:Waves are caused by a number of forces, i.e. wind,

gravitational pull from the sun and moon, changes in atmospheric pressure, earthquakes etc.

Unequal heating of the Earth’s surface generates wind, and wind blowing over water generates waves.

Eg: Oscillating Water Columns (OWC). The rising and falling water column drives air into and out of the top of the shaft, powering an air-driven turbine.

3. Ocean thermal energyIn this ocean energy idea uses temperature

differences in the ocean.

Power plants can be built that use this difference in temperature to make energy.

Using this type of energy source is called Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion or OTEC.

It is being used in both Japan and in Hawaii in some demonstration

FUTURE ASPECTSIn a society with increasing energy needs, it is

becoming more and more important to have alternative sources of power to keep up with the ever growing energy demand.

The capacity of tidal energy exceeds that of coal and oil and is renewable.

The Indian state of Gujarat is planning to host South Asia's first commercial-scale tidal power station. The company Atlantis Resources planned to install a 50MW tidal farm in the Gulf of Kutch on India's west coast, with construction starting early in 2012.[24]

Tidal Power Advantages

Once you've built it, tidal power is free.

It produces no greenhouse gases or other waste.

It needs no fuel.

It produces electricity reliably.

Not expensive to maintain.

Tides are totally predictable.

Offshore turbines and vertical-axis turbines are not ruinously expensive to build and do not have a large environmental impact.

Page 14: Tidel power rajiv

Disadvantages A barrage is very

expensive to build There are few suitable

sites for tidal barragesSalt water causes

corrosion Tidal power can have

effects on marine life. There is problem in

transportation of electricity once it has produced

Page 15: Tidel power rajiv

Conclusion• Depleting oil reserves, the emission of greenhouse

gas force people to replace most of our traditional energy sources with renewable energy in the future.

• Tidal energy is one of the best candidates for this

Tidal power is a great source of renewable energy

it could play a vital role in giving healthy energy to all.

Development, innovation and a desire to make a change is needed if tidal power or any other renewable power to be adopted.
