Reactions 841 - 3 Mar 2001

■ The use of NSAIDs in women who know that theyare pregnant should be avoided, according to astatement issued by the UK Royal College ofObstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG). This advicehas been given in response to the results of a studyrecently published by Dr Gunnar Neilsen andcolleagues* in which miscarriage was associated withNSAID use during pregnancy. The RCOG reiterates DrNeilsen and colleagues’ comments that the study didnot establish a causative link between NSAID use andmiscarriage, but they say that pregnant women shouldavoid NSAIDs in the meantime in favour of effectivealternative drugs such as paracetamol[acetaminophen].* see Reactions 838: 5, 10 Feb 2001; 800852490
