Reactions 841 - 3 Mar 2001 The use of NSAIDs in women who know that they are pregnant should be avoided, according to a statement issued by the UK Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG). This advice has been given in response to the results of a study recently published by Dr Gunnar Neilsen and colleagues * in which miscarriage was associated with NSAID use during pregnancy. The RCOG reiterates Dr Neilsen and colleagues’ comments that the study did not establish a causative link between NSAID use and miscarriage, but they say that pregnant women should avoid NSAIDs in the meantime in favour of effective alternative drugs such as paracetamol [acetaminophen]. * see Reactions 838: 5, 10 Feb 2001; 800852490 Pregnant women should avoid NSAIDs, says RCOG.
