Slough Borough Council (SBC) was awarded just under £5m through the Local Sustainable Transport Fund (LSTF) from the Department for Transport (DfT) to deliver a number of sustainable transport projects in the borough before the end of March 2016.
The aim of the LSTF in Slough is to improve the efficiency of businesses, retain and grow current employee opportunities,
The leaflet contains information about different sustainable travel modes, information on the benefits and ways in which pupils and parents can get involved, details of the sustainable initiatives (such as Bike It, Bikeability, Free Your Feet), and road safety advice when around the school site.

Walking provides excellent health benefits,
consistent journey times, and helps save on
travel costs.
Introduction
Sustainable travel is any form of transport that prevents
damage to our environment, and therefore our future. Using
sustainable forms of transport has many benefits not only to our
environment but to your general health and well-being.
Walking and cycling to school
Research suggests that pupils who walk or cycle to school arrive
feeling more alert and ready to learn. Cycling and walking have
very similar benefits, you can get to places quickly and you
keep fit at the same time. They are both also social activities
to get involved in with your families or on the way to school
with friends. Slough and Eton Church of England Business
and Enterprise College is a ‘Bike It’ school which means
they participate in a number of different cycling activities
throughout the year which encourage cycling at the school.
The benefits of walking and cycling to school are;
• Save money - Walking is entirely free and the cheapest
form of transport as all you need are your legs.
• Keeping fit - Walking is one of the best forms of exercise
you can do. Walking is completely flexible; you can chose
to walk anywhere and anytime to fit in with your day.
• Socialising - Teaming up with some friends that live close to
you and walking to school, this is a great way of socialising.
• Faster - With many cars being on the road in the morning
and evening, you can find yourself sitting in traffic for
a long period of time. Walking can sometimes be more
efficient and a faster way of getting around Slough as well.
• Consistent journey times - Walking or cycling will give you
a consistent journey time to school without the worry of
being delayed in a traffic jam.
• A good neighbour - Our local communities are not
inconvenienced at peak time by cars outside the school.
School cycle parking
The school has approximately 130 cycle parking spaces for
pupils, within a bike shed in the school grounds. Remember
to lock your bicycle when getting to school.
Bikeability
This is a free course run within the school term and during
the summer holidays which teaches you necessary skills to
ride a bike confidently on today’s roads.
If you want to learn how to ride a bike or just want to
brush up on your skills, ask your teachers today to sign
up, or there is more information on the Slough website:

Travelling by bus to school
Using public transport has many benefits. Here are a few
reasons why taking the bus may change the way you travel
to school forever.
• Better use of personal time - The bus frees up time to do
something that you enjoy.
• Faster journeys - Prioritised traffic lights and bus lanes on
main roads allow buses to get through traffic quickly.
• Better well-being - Regular exercise walking to and from
the bus stop can be an easy way of building up your
physical activity.
• Reduced greenhouse gases - Less congestion, pollution
and better air quality.
The nearest public bus stops are on Chalvey Road West
(service 5) and Chalvey, Windsor Road, McDonalds
(services 60, 61, 71, 77, 191, 701, 702).

To check the times of buses in ‘real time’ visit the Transport
for Slough website: http://www.slough.gov.uk/tfs or
download the First buses app for your phone (iPhone /
Android).
We understand it is not always possible to walk or cycle to
school, so why not try;
• ‘Park and Stride’ - getting dropped off away from the
school entrance and walking the last 5 to 10 minutes of
your journey can disperse the traffic as well as make the
area around our school safer.
• Car-sharing - if you have to drive then why not pair up
with other pupils who live near to you, then take it in
turns to get driven to school.

• Not parking on single or double yellow lines around the site in
particular on the road directly outside the school and along the
driveway to the school. • Not parking where you cause inconvenience to others.
• Getting out of the car on the pavement side – never into the road.

reduce CO2 emissions and improve heath of residents. School travel behaviour change is one aspect of this project, and focuses on those Slough schools identified to be generating the most congestion on Slough’s roads during the morning peak.
Slough and Eton School is an 11-19 years co-educational school and has been actively engaging with the LSTF programme,

working with SBC’s School Travel Advisors to deliver a range of measures and initiatives for pupils, staff and parents.
Slough and Eton School has achieved great progress in promoting sustainable travel, and has made excellent use of the funding and support provided by the LSTF. Currently the school has approximately 1130 pupils and 180 staff on site.
Cycle parking installationSecure on-site cycle parking is a great way to encourage pupils (and staff) to cycle to school. In an effort to promote and support cycling, the LSTF programme has been able to fund secure cycle storage on-site. There is currently capacity for 94 bicycles for students and 10 for staff.
WalkingFree Your Feet (FYF) is a week-long challenge to promote walking. Living Streets launched the Free Your Feet (FYF) challenge with an assembly to all Year 7 pupils in October 2014 during international walking month. At the launch the students were made aware of the benefits of walking and sustainable travel and were invited to record their journeys to and from school on a postcard. Pupils who participated were entered into a prize draw to win £60 of High Street shopping vouchers; £10 per class.
The rate for walking part or all the way to school rose by 12 percent. There was also a 4 percent increase in the number of pupils walking part of the way or all from the way from school during the FYF challenge. The after challenge rates show 140 out of 153 pupils walk to school and 146 out of 153 pupils walk from school. Only 13 pupils indicated they did not walk to school and 7 pupils indicated they did not walk from school. The total change in walking rates after the challenge was a 16 percent increase.
The challenge ran again in 2015 and had similar positive impact and a great response from the students.
Walking and cycling mapSlough and Eton School worked with Living Streets in order to develop a specific walking and cycling map for the school. These maps have been provided to all pupils at the school and are also distributed to new pupils when they join the school as part of the new starter pack. The maps highlight key walking routes, off road and on road cycling routes to the school. Additional information is also provided such as walking and cycling times, areas to take extra care in, areas to dismount and directions from key residential areas within Slough. The school have also integrated the maps into Year 7 Geography classes throughout the Autumn term.
