Introduction

Sustainable travel is any form of transport that prevents

damage to our environment, and therefore our future. Using

sustainable forms of transport has many benefits not only to our

environment but to your general health and well-being.

Walking and cycling to school

Research suggests that pupils who walk or cycle to school arrive

feeling more alert and ready to learn. Cycling and walking have

very similar benefits, you can get to places quickly and you

keep fit at the same time. They are both also social activities

to get involved in with your families or on the way to school

with friends. Slough and Eton Church of England Business

they participate in a number of different cycling activities

throughout the year which encourage cycling at the school.

• Save money - Walking is entirely free and the cheapest

form of transport as all you need are your legs.

• Keeping fit - Walking is one of the best forms of exercise

to lock your bicycle when getting to school.

Bikeability

Travelling by car to school If you are unable to walk, cycle or take the bus to school and your

only choice is travelling by car, please make sure you wear a seatbelt.

Wearing a seatbelt is a legal requirement when getting into a car and

also keeps you safe. Parking Please help Slough and Eton Church of England Business and Enterprise

your parents or guardians about:

• Not parking or driving on the pavement.

• Not parking on single or double yellow lines around the site in

particular on the road directly outside the school and along the

driveway to the school. • Not parking where you cause inconvenience to others.

• Getting out of the car on the pavement side – never into the road.

• Please be aware that the school entrance gates will be closed

between 14:45 and 15:15 hours to allow pupils to leave the site safely.

working with SBC’s School Travel Advisors to deliver a range of measures and initiatives for pupils, staff and parents.

Slough and Eton School has achieved great progress in promoting sustainable travel, and has made excellent use of the funding and support provided by the LSTF. Currently the school has approximately 1130 pupils and 180 staff on site.

Cycle parking installationSecure on-site cycle parking is a great way to encourage pupils (and staff) to cycle to school. In an effort to promote and support cycling, the LSTF programme has been able to fund secure cycle storage on-site. There is currently capacity for 94 bicycles for students and 10 for staff.

WalkingFree Your Feet (FYF) is a week-long challenge to promote walking. Living Streets launched the Free Your Feet (FYF) challenge with an assembly to all Year 7 pupils in October 2014 during international walking month. At the launch the students were made aware of the benefits of walking and sustainable travel and were invited to record their journeys to and from school on a postcard. Pupils who participated were entered into a prize draw to win £60 of High Street shopping vouchers; £10 per class.

The rate for walking part or all the way to school rose by 12 percent. There was also a 4 percent increase in the number of pupils walking part of the way or all from the way from school during the FYF challenge. The after challenge rates show 140 out of 153 pupils walk to school and 146 out of 153 pupils walk from school. Only 13 pupils indicated they did not walk to school and 7 pupils indicated they did not walk from school. The total change in walking rates after the challenge was a 16 percent increase.

The challenge ran again in 2015 and had similar positive impact and a great response from the students.

Walking and cycling mapSlough and Eton School worked with Living Streets in order to develop a specific walking and cycling map for the school. These maps have been provided to all pupils at the school and are also distributed to new pupils when they join the school as part of the new starter pack. The maps highlight key walking routes, off road and on road cycling routes to the school. Additional information is also provided such as walking and cycling times, areas to take extra care in, areas to dismount and directions from key residential areas within Slough. The school have also integrated the maps into Year 7 Geography classes throughout the Autumn term.
