Christ is Risen! He is risen indeed!
Note: we looked at Greta Schrum's description ofprayer last month, but it is a perfect image to seeagain in light of the Risen Christ's presence drawingus to connect in prayer with God.
In the season of Easter, this resurrection goodnews is our good news and hope. As the eartharound us slowly springs to life, so too, doesour spirit.
Throughout Lent, we focused on Psalm 23, thePsalm of the Good Shepherd. Together, withour brothers and sisters in Christ fromBethlehem Lutheran --- we journeyed to thecross and empty tomb together. Each week, weset down another piece of baggage or burden aswe lightened our load, just as author MaxLucado urged us to do in our reflection book,Traveling Light. Each week the pile of burdensand baggage grew --- and by Good Friday, theburdens were gone, nailed to the cross andgone for good.
Max Lucado wrote about the gifts of Psalm 23 --- especially when it inspired us to turn to theGood Shepherd and pray. Prayer is one of thekey ways we continue to lay our baggage andburdens at Jesus’ feet and experience God’speace and comfort as He takes the burdensfrom us. In much the same way – we are nowin the season of Easter. Easter is not just one
Sunday --- it lasts for 7 weeks! Why? Because weneed Resurrection Good News each and everyday --- and we need that good news to truly takehold of our lives.
We need the good news of the cross and emptytomb as it meets us exactly where we are andbrings the crucified and risen One to you and me.The reality is – Lenten theme or not --- we needour burdens lifted each and every day, not just as aspecial focus six weeks out of the year.
Isn’t part of our spiritual journey… even our lifejourney, the reality that God is continually at workin our lives --- molding us, shaping us, transformingus, and reforming us – again and again? Isn’t thatwhat happens in prayer? Isn’t that what life is allabout --- God rushing into our brokenness andbringing healing? God brings light into darknessand life out of death. If that is our story --- and it is!
Then, let’s shout it from the rooftops --- “Come toImmanuel Lutheran Church in Atwater, wherewe’re not perfect and we’re proud of it!” Becausewe may not be perfectly put together or strongerthan anything --- but God in Christ Jesus is. Godin Christ Jesus enters into our beautiful, sinful, joy-filled, broken and put back together communityand breathes His life into us again and again. TheOne who holds us closer than we would dareimagine, breathes the understanding and comfort of the crucified Lord into our struggles,

heartaches, and challenges. The One who lovesus more than we would dare imagine, breathesthe hope, new life, and victory of the Risen Lordinto our everyday circumstances, our joys anddreams, our day to day, regular, ordinary livesand circumstances.
Even better, this One, is the lover and leader ofour congregation, our family of God, our body ofChrist that is Immanuel Lutheran Church. ThisOne is the lover and leader of our very lives.Better still… this One calls to us, each andevery one of us and beckons us to draw near, toopen up and pour out all the joys, challenges andstruggles of this life. This One invites us to bestill, to quiet the busy, racing pace of our livesand listen… listen to the love, mercy, grace, for-giveness, hope and new life of God in ChristJesus. As our hearts turn and speak with ourCreator, as our ears turn and listen to the LivingGod --- we are renewed… filled… reformed…made new.
Prayer is God’s invitation to us to crawl into thelap of God, raise our arms like a child – and belifted up. In Luke 13, Jesus says, “How often haveI desired to gather you children together as ahen gathers her brood under her wings, and youwere not willing!” Let’s stop putting all the bar-riers of busyness or unworthiness before us andGod. May our prayer be, “God, make me will-ing… give me the will to draw near to you, asyou gather me into your arms and under yourwings…”
In 2nd Corinthians 12:9, Paul writes, ‘but Godsaid to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for mypower is made perfect in weakness.’ So, I willboast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, sothat the power of Christ may dwell in me.” FirstLutheran brothers and sisters in Christ --- let’sboast – not in ourselves but in the God of JesusChrist. May we boast in the crucified and risenOne who calls us to run into his arms. Even ifwe’re too busy to run to him or kneel at hisfeet, thanks be to God - he runs to us!
Grace & Peace, Pastor Christa
Please note: I will be on a continuing educationweek May 19-23 in Minneapolis @ The Festivalof Homyletics.
