VERNON Blvd NABE NIGHTStart your walk on 50th Ave near Vernon, with (appropriately) A.R.T. @Open Door, then head next door to Dorian Café on the corner of Vernon and 50th for some “salt” photos. Heading north on Vernon, Modern Spaces will be hosting large paintings, and nearby are photos at Testaccio’s. Across the street you will find panoramic images in Douglas Elliman Realty, and around the corner on 47th Rd, the Jesse Winter Retrospective is on view at the cute Ten10 Studios carriage house. Neon lights the next stop, giving you an opportunity to peek into one of the many residences along Vernon [47th Ave]. Further up the Blvd, pop into Matted LIC, then cross over for a slice and old-world charm at Manducatis Rustica while you drink in art. Taking a walk towards the river, get an amazing view from the 8th floor of the brand new TFCornerstone apartments, where there are 5 solo shows in gallery-like apartments overlooking Manhattan. Head back to Vernon Blvd via 5-25 46th Ave for The Crew’s Opening, then back on Vernon, where Evandro Tech Motors once again has cleared out their vintage cars to show the vintage car photos and other amazing works of LIC’s living legend, Tony Vaccaro. While there, experience a glimpse and taste of Peru. On your way to the Open’s Opening Party at The Local on 44th Ave, finish your Vernon Blvd Nabe Night crawl at PaintCan Studios on 10th St, to see a few of the many members of LICArtists who will be showing in alternative places throughout LIC.

A.R.T. (American Road Tar and other Discoveries)May 14-18 // Noon-2amReception May 14 // 5-7Chuck Baker, photographerIt is a photographer’s job to be an observer – to see the unseen, to notice the un-noticed, to document, to record, to make visual sense of the world around us. These are simple compositions. Beauty found in the obscure – the byproduct of keeping one’s eyes open and carry-ing an I-Phone. OLD SCHOOL SALTS: Black & White Film Photographs by Greg M. StowellMay 14-18 // Reception May 14 // 6:30 - 8 (50% off beer and wine)The title refers to the silver salt pro-cess in gelatin silver print making, the shakers on tables in “old school” city diners and of course, the telling of tall tales by seafaring “old salts” gathering at pubs. frankfrdgallery.net/Dorian Café10-01 50th Ave718.937.1120

OUTSIDE, LOOKING IN: Times Square & Beyond

Paintings by ELINORE SCHNURRMay 14-18 // [TIME TBD]Reception May 14 // 5-7My paintings have always involved people in urban spaces, but in dif-ferent ways. I wander the city some-times, searching out the scene or event that will capture my imagina-tion, with the intent to put it into my own visual language. When I find something, I try to capture it with a sketch, or by using my camera as a sketchbook, and making a note to return another day with my pochade box or easel. Most of my paintings are of New York City and its incred-ible diversity. elinoreschnurr.comModern Spaces47-42 Vernon Blvd718.784.1110modernspacesnyc.com

HILMA KRLAMay 14-18 // 12-11pmReception May 14 // 7pm While traveling through the streets of New York, photographer Hilma Krla was captivated by the evidence of human needs affecting everyday life. From people to rubble, these photographs reveal a certain irony often underlying everyday encoun-ters in the Big Apple.Testaccio Restaurant47-30 Vernon Blvd718.937.2900testacciony.com

IN & OUT OF TIME: 360° Pan-oramic ImagesMay 14-16 // 9am-6pm by apptReception May 14 // 5:30-8pmRafael Octavio Gonzalez’s work allows us to look at everyday places in extraordinary ways by playing with space and time and bringing 360° views into one plane. The Long Island City-bred artist illuminates intimate details of our world in panorama through multiple images, vibrant colors, exposures, and composites. The images magnify life in a way that creates intimacy in its rich detail and luminous sur-realism. These fairytale-like works capture the beautiful innocence of looking at something for the first time. PAUL OTTO KRAMMMay 14-31 // Tues-Sun 8am-11pmReception May 14 // 6:30-8pmPaul Otto Kramm was an essential part of our community here in Queens; his passing is more of a loss than many of us know. He was a resident of Queens for more than 45 years, and in that time contributed works that can only be described as masterpieces. The greatness of Paul’s work wasn’t appreciated while he lived, but this exhibition aims to change that. It is time for us to give him his due, and the easiest way we can do that is simply by looking. After all, he left us so much to see.

ORESTES GONZALEZLIC Artists & ArtifactsA synopsis of the 2012 LIC ARTIST series of local artists in their studio settings, plus a series of iconic objects and scenes I shot around NEW YORK City between 2011 and 2014. My photos are not solely representational, but symbolic of spirit and emotion. Trying to show the zeitgeist of our place and time is what I try to convey in my photo-graphs.Orestes Gonzalez is a photographer, architect, curator and writer. His photography column in the LIC COURIER, «ORESTES› LIC›, brings you an image of our community in all its evolving formations, every month. orestesgonzalezphoto.com

DONNA LEVINSTONECITY AS LANDSCAPESince I moved my studio to Long Island City, I have become more aware of how buildings may be construed the same way as my mountainscapes and tree lined horizons. Mountains fade into the distant mist in a landscape; buildings fade into the distant mist in a cityscape. LIC offers spectacular skies, as it is not yet overdeveloped. For this exhibit, I have tried to capture the beauty of these skies in both black and white and color pastel. Clouds offer a “24-hour art gallery” in Long Island City, and there is never a shortage of interesting shapes dotting the horizon. donnalevinstone.com

SHARON FLORINNEW YORK MOMENTSAs a painter of the urban landscape, I strive to capture the texture, detail and light of the city. My work documents what is so familiar that you can walk by without noticing it, and yet tomorrow it may be gone. sjfnewyork.blogspot.com

PAULA ELLIOTTSETTINGSMy paintings are best described as abstractions, but invariably refer to aspects of the external world.I treat my acrylics like watercolor to attain a potency of color and to cre-ate a fluid and transparent environ-ment, underpinning images, which are both abstract and associative. paulaelliott.net

TOSHIAKO NOBAMy work is inspired by things that show the passage of time and their histories with external stimulus such as layers in canyons accumu-lated and exposed over many years, weathered abandoned buildings, repasted and faded advertisement posters on city walls, a squashed can in a road, layers of paint peeling off of a wall, and so on. These visual encounters influence my aesthetic sense and concepts in my work. Clay that has formed over time in a stratum of the earth and then was dug up to become a glazed art piece in a kiln bears conceptual resemblance to the aforementioned. toshiakinoda.comTFCornerstone46-10 Center St, 8th FL718.606.9440tfc.com

THE CREWMay 17-18 // 12-6pmReception May 14 // 5:30-8:00pmThis project is presenting artists who have one big thing in common: they all work in the Matthew Barney Studio. With this group exhibition, they are presenting themselves to the community as individual artists, but also as a collective. They are showing sculptures, drawings and installations. Their art practice is a reflection of everyday life within imaginative aspects. It is a state-ment, critique and observation on social structures and today’s environment. Authors will intervene in exhibits with live action, so in that way, this show will have a form of interactive happenings with the audience. LOCUS FOCUS: 3 PHOTOG-RAPHERSMay 14-18 //12-5pmReception May 15 // 5:30-8pmThe word “locus” is Latin for a place where something happens or is found. In his color photographs of New York City, Robert Lobe finds beauty, meaning and mystery in street level details to which people typically pay little attention. In his series, “Surfaces”, Logan Lockett captures grimy but colorful public surfaces to emphasize how these soiled, quotidian subjects can be simulta-neously “unwashed” and “vibrantly beautiful”. Adele Shtern opens to the revelation of seeing the familiar in new ways. Painterly and abstract aspects of the environment catch her eye in diverse loci. robertlobe-photo.com, loganlockett.com, adeleshtern.weebly.comInSite Design Studio21-54 45 Ave718.472.1400insitedesignstudio.com

LATERAL ITINERARIES in CLAY This exhibition offers snapshots from the creative itineraries of 12 artists who work at BrickHouse Ceramic Art Center. A concentrated exploration of how clay can be shaped to reflect individual visions. All the work began with the same basic gesture – digging into a bag of clay. Then their itineraries diverged immediately. They ran out along paths of individual inspirations from function to installation, to figuration, to abstraction. These 12 artists offer glimpses into 100+ individual creative itineraries, from beginners to professionals, that all began with a bag of clay. brick-houseny.com

Curating the full atmosphere of each event, Ghost Ensemble explores both tradi-tional and non-traditional venues to expand the musical experience; the familiar becomes unfamiliar through musical transcendence, while unexpected and unexplored places become a new layer of beauty.
