Their collaborationcelebrates the ancient connectionwith the river as Deva, her widerlandscape, and the earth as sacredmother of all; a natural participationin nature’s bounty and a quietcontemplation of deeper meaning incontrast to a world where speed, acceleration and achievement areworshipped as the ruling forces ofour time.

7 July – 19 DecemberDulce et Decorum EstChester History & Heritage
For many of the young men whovolunteered to fight for their countryin the Great War it was a greatadventure – regular meals, goodcompanionship and an outdoor life –which was sure to be ‘over byChristmas’. Neither they, nor thosewho so actively encouraged them toenlist, had any idea of the horrorsthat were in store. Usingphotographs drawn from both ourown collection and those images andstories that were shared at our recentRoadshow, this exhibition looks atthe local men – and their families –whose lives were irrevocablychanged by ‘the war to end all wars’.
7 July – 19 DecemberThe Nurses’ StoryChester History & HeritageThis exhibition, contributed by theBackford, Mollington and DistrictLocal History Society, looks at theexperiences of two dedicated nursesduring the Great War, drawing ontheir photographs, diaries andletters.
7 July – 19 DecemberFor Those in Peril:HMS ChesterChester History & HeritageIt was an exciting moment for thecitizens of Chester when a ship wasnamed after the city and launched in1915. At the Battle of Jutland in June1916 HMS Chester came under heavyfire and amongst the gun crewfatalities was 16 year old JohnCornwall, who received the VictoriaCross for his dedication to dutydespite being mortally wounded. This display commemorates hiscourage throughout that terriblebattle and the ship and crew that hewas so proud to be a part of.
7 July – 19 DecemberFrom Bombs toBandagesChester History & Heritage
The flow of casualties from thebattlefields of the Great Waroverwhelmed the existing medicalestablishments at home, and manycivilian buildings and houses wereturned over to military use. Chesterwas no exception and these images, taken from a donated photographalbum, show the young convalescentpatients and nurses of the VoluntaryAid Detachment at Hoole Bank, theirsmiling faces shining out at us fromthat long ago sunny afternoon whenthe booming guns of the front linemust have seemed a world awayfrom those peaceful gardens.
2 August – 12 OctoberThe Great War:Personal Responsesby Cheshire ArtistsNetworkGrosvenor Museum,Exhibition Gallery TwoMembers of Cheshire Artists Networkhave produced work in a range ofmedia which represent personalresponses to the Great War, seenthrough collective recollection, documentary accounts, and familyhistories. Even though the subjectmatter cannot helpbut beemotional, and is oftenpersonalthrough theinvolvementof ancestors andtheir loved ones, the clouding ofmemories willincreasingly be athreat. The artistsinvolved hope toslow that processby means of theirwork, and in thisway pay theirrespects to thosewho paid the priceof our freedom.
