PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Be grateful, be happy There are many things that make us happy, truly happy. Some are external like family and friends. Some others are internal and we have full control over them. Research psychologists are now starting to understand the overwhelming power of gratitude in helping us have a long and happy life. Practising gratitude releases neurotransmitters called dopamine and serotonin. In particular, when dopamine is released in large amounts, it creates feelings of pleasure and reward. You know the feeling well. Game makers and advertisers manipulate dopamine release to make you want to repeat desirable behaviours. That addiction to your phone is reinforced by dopamine. When you hear a notification ding, dopamine is released, giving you a pleasurable feeling, meaning you want to pick up your phone. In fact, addiction in general is underpinned by dopamine release. This is a powerful chemical. We can use that power to make us feel good through gratitude. Simply by thanking others, being happy for the good things we have, volunteering, looking for a silver lining we shift our mood, making us feel better, feel happier and connect us to the world and each other. Gratitude can also make us more resilient because if we are aware of the good things in our life, when things don’t go our way we have an awareness that we still have a lot to be thankful for. It’s simple: be grateful for what you have each day. Share that with others and you’ll be amazed at the shift in your wellbeing.
