Chairman of the MD/PhD program
The MD/PhD program “Molecular Medicine“ was established in autumn 2000. Our program has meanwhile become one of the leading PhD programs in Germany due to excellent interdisciplinary cooperation between the Hannover Medical School (MHH), the University, the School of Veterinary Medicine Hannover and the Gesellschaft für Biotechnologische Forschung (GBF), Braunschweig, due to the support of the International Promotion Program (IPP) by DAAD and DFG. We are also proud to have international outstanding teachers, such as Prof. Fritz Melchers, in our program. It is also the first German PhD program which has been accreditated according to European standards (modules ECTS). There is a good ratio between medical students and students from life sciences as well as between German and foreign students. This program attracts great national and international interest. Additionally, the MD/PhD program is the basis for the Hannover Biomedical Research School (HBRS) founded in 2003, which is extremely successful in integrating all postgraduate programs at MHH. Joint curricula have been established. Currently, HBRS is applying for funds in the Excellence Initiative and has already passed the first round.
We meanwhile can be proud of three classes which have successfully graduated from the program. They are ambassadors for MHH around the world. Many sponsors are generously providing support for our workshop or even better stipends for our students. Many thanks to everyone who has supported this MD/PhD program, especially to those students who determine the excellence of the program.
Reinhold E. Schmidt, MD Professor of Medicine and Immunology
Dean of Hannover Biomedical Research School
We express our thanks to our sponsors: “Friends of MHH” Martin Lawrenz, Hannover

Final exams in the MD/PhD program 2005:
12 students did their final exams in November 2005. From 18 students of the year 2002, 9 did their
final exams after exactly 3 years = 50%, seven plan to finish after 3,5 years, two after 4 years.
Detailed Description At the moment (February 2006) there are 70 students in the program [30 women and 40 men; 51
international and 19 Germans; 19 medical students (incl. veterinary students) and 51 life scientists].
The international students come from Bolivia (1), China (5), Columbia (1), Estonia (1), Ethiopia (1),
Georgia (1), Hungary (1), India (30), Indonesia (1), Kenia (2), Mongolia (1), Poland (1), Slovakia (1),
Syria (1), the Netherlands (1), Ukraine (1) and Zimbabwe (1).
7
The students are either financed by the corresponding departments or by scholarships (DAAD;
industry etc.). We are very grateful that in 2005 the MHH provided for the second time ten half
stipends (about 1.000,-Euro/month for 18 months) for the best ten students of the ranking list after
selection.
Concerning selection of the new students, a 3-step level procedure was introduced in 2002. It consists
of: 1. preselection by the PhD commission, 2. a written test in the individual home countries, 3. an
interview (in 2005 in Hannover, New Delhi and Hyderabad, India). In 2002 an extensive application
form was developed, which as further improved in 2005. Now, there is a joint application form
together with the PhD program “Infection Biology”.
The selection of the applicants is based on qualification only. The accepted candidates are supposed to
choose a department and a research project themselves. This means that there can be bottle-necks
regarding the guarantee of the financing of the students. For this reason scholarships were applied for
with e.g. the Excellence Initiative of the German government.
Students work on a 3-year research project in one of the departments of the MHH or at cooperating
institutes (see list of students). In addition, there is an obligatory program of teaching consisting of
seminars and tutorials (see list of lecturers).
In October 2003, the Graduate School: “Hannover Biomedical Research School” (HBRS) was founded
at MHH (director: Prof. Dr. R.E. Schmidt, office: Dr. S. Kruse). Here, all graduate programns [PhD
(MD/PhD “Molecular Medicine” and PhD “Infection Biology”, Graduate Colleges (GRK 705,
European GRKs “Pseudomonas” and “Strategiesof human pathogens to establish acute and chronic
infection”), etc.] are coordinated.
In 2004, a joint Curriculum of the HBRS [MD/PhD program, PhD program “Infection Biology”
(speaker: Prof. Dr. Förster) and Miditrain (GBF, EST Marie Curie, speaker: Prof. Dr. Hauser)] was
established in order to bundle resources.
In the first year, basics and methods of biology and medicine are taught. There are special in-depth
seminars for medical students as well as life scientists. Furthermore, specific tutorial series for the
MD/PhD program respective PhD “Infection Biology”/Miditrain were organized.
During the second academic year, focus lies more on current research projects (applied aspects). Since
2003, four main foci have been established in the MD/PhD program: Immunology; Infection;
Oncology and Differentiation; Genetics and Cell Biology (Fig. 2).
Besides an extensive English curriculum, guest seminars, scientific colloquia, discussions with the
supervisors and technical practical courses took place.
8
Most important are the so-called “soft skills“ as well as seminars about “Research Ethics” (members of
the institute of “Science and Ethics”, Bonn), “Ethics“ (Prof. Schmidtke), “Animal Experiments“ (Prof.
Hedrich), “Scientific Writing“ (Dr. Kruse), “Presentation techniques” (Prof. Dierks), “Bioinformatics”
(Zheng, GBF), “Intercultural communication” (together with Göttingen and Ulm) etc.
The students keep book about all seminars. At the end of every semester an evaluation of the
educational programs and lecturers is performed.
After 18 months, students give an oral intermediate exam in the respective main subject and the
subject of the co-supervisor (presentation and discussion of a research paper). After 3 years the final
exam takes place in form of a public disputation.
In 2005, twelve MD/PhD students (Syed Raza Ali, India, Clinical Immunology; Srinivas Annavarapu
Rao, India, Endocrinology; Wahid Ansari, India, Clinical Imunology; Meta Djojosubroto, Indonesia,
Gastroenterology; Thomas Gebhardt, Germany, Gastroenterology; Claudia Karacsonyi, Argentina,
Cell Biology; Varsha Kumar, India, Clinical Immunology; Jianyun Liu, Visceral Surgery; Christina
Nassenstein, Germany, Fraunhofer Institute; Axel Schambach, Germany, Hematology and Oncology;
Amar Deep Sharma, India, Gastroenterology; Frank Traub, Germany, Pathology) sucessfully finished
the program, whereby 9 from altogether 18 of the year 2002 needed exactly 3 years. The remaining six
students will perform the final exams either on June 9th, 2006 (seven) or November 10th, 2006 (two).
The ECTS System was introduced (credit points = cp; see Fig. 1). The program was accreditated
according to European standards by ZEvA on December 9th, 2003.

In September 2002, a German-wide network of biomedically orientated PhD programs was established
(currently 15 members). Further improvement of the coordination of selection procedures (exams and
interviews) was achieved. In 2005, the second joint workshop on “Intercultural communication” took
place in Bergkirchen, organized by the PhD programs of Ulm, Göttingen and Hannover.
2. Common Rules
On 15.12.99, a rule for the MD/PhD program was passed by the senate of Hannover Medical School.
This rule unites a regulations for studies and exams. On 12.02.02, the MD/PhD program received
authorization from the Lower Saxony Ministry for Science and Culture to alternatively award besides
the PhD title for scientists the title Dr. rer. nat. Such changes in the rules and adaption to the program
situation were passed by the senate on 04.06.02. On 11.02.04, the rules were adapted to the
suggestions by the committee of referees for accreditation and were overall updated, same accounts for
April 2005. The PhD rules consider all aims of the program.
10
3. Cooperation with International Institutes
Fortunately, within the MHH there is an active exchange, i.e. participation of almost all scientifically
active departments in the MD/PhD program – whether by means of active organizing within the
MD/PhD commission, by supervising the MD/PhD students at the research laboratories or as lecturers
in the numerous educational programs. This goes for the basic scientific as well as for the clinically
orientated departments, for example: Biochemistry, Cardiology, Cell Biology, Clinical Immunology,
Dermatology, Gastroenterology-Hepatology-Endocrinology, Genetics, Hematology, Heart and
Thoracic Surgery, Immunology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Nephrology, Oncology, Pathology,
Physiology, Rheumatology, Tumor Biology, Virology, Visceral and Transplantation Surgery, etc.
Therefore intensive cooperation exists between collaborators (Post-docs etc.) from Graduate Colleges
with the MD/PhD program. Moreover, the “Graduate School” (HBRS) was founded in October 2003.
There is close cooperation between the graduate and PhD programs of the School of Veterinary
Medicine Hannover, also concerning lecturers and students. In addition, there are very close
cooperations to the GBF in Braunschweig and the Fraunhofer Institute (ITEM) in Hannover. Thanks to
the scientists of the MHH there is already intensive cooperation with European and internationally
very well-known research institutes (e.g. also by means of the European Graduate College
“Pseudomonas: Pathogenicity and Biotechnology“). Of course, the PhD students profit from this
cooperation, too.
A constant exchange and participation in education and research exists with the following institutes:
a) national:
• German Research Center for Biotechnology (GBF); Braunschweig • School of Veterinary Medicine, Hannover • Fraunhofer Institute for “Toxicology and Experimental Medicine” (ITEM), Hannover • Max Planck Institute for “Experimental Endocrinology“, Hannover • Institute for “Animal Breeding”, Mariensee (FAL) • Center for Stem Cell Research, Gatersleben
There is intensive cooperation with these national institutes as well as concerning education (lecturers)
and concerning research, i.e. making three year projects available or the function of scientists as co-
supervisors.
b) international (especially with):
• Centre for DNA Fingerprinting (CDFD), Hyderabad, India With Prof. Dr. S. Hasnain there has been intensive contact since 2002 (see guest lecturer and trip to India). The establishment of a mutual “summer school“ is planned and the exchange of scientists.
11
c.) Economy/Industry (especially with):
Solvay GmbH Hannover, Schering AG Berlin and Novartis GmbH Basel
Industry excursions (e.g. Solvay AG, Hannover; Bayer AG, Research Center, Wuppertal) are regularly
taking place.
4. Success and measures for implementation
In 2005, twelve students successfully finished the MD/PhD program (see above). Some of the finalists
continue to work at MHH or German universities (medical consultant, Postdoc etc.). Eight of them
already went to work as Postdocs abroad (UK, USA, Australia, China, Switzerland). The MD/PhD
program plans to establish an ALUMNI organization on the long-term range. At the moment the PhD
students form a sub-group of the MHH Alumni e.V.
The MHH has guaranteed to continue financial support of the MD/PhD program after discontinuation
of the support by the DAAD/DFG (after 5 years). The DAAD has extended their financial support for
2005 and 2006 after an extremely successful evaluation of the program. The MHH already provided
ten grants to excellent stdents per year (see above).
The MD/PhD program plays a key role (scientific, organization) in Hannover Biomedical Research
School (HBRS). The establishment of the Graduate School will be considered in the future budget
(personel and consumables). Currently, MHH is applying for funds for HBRS in course of the
Excellence Initiative.
Furthermore, the accreditation (see above) implements the program.
The program was very successful in gaining sponsors, either for the annual workshop, the year book or
for student’s grants (see list on page 6). A sponsoring concept as well as special flyers were developed.
12

Major research interests:The main research interest of the group lies on the analysis of the molecular mechanisms underlying developmental processes during mammalian embryogenesis. Development of the Notochord The notochord is a transient embryonic structure that serves as a signaling center that is essential for the dorsoventralpatterning of the spinal cord and somites. Various mutations in mice disturb the development or maintenance of the notochord. Identification and functional characterization of the genes affected by these mutations is the subject of several projects. Somitogenesis Somites form as the result of segmentation of the paraxial mesoderm. They give rise to the vertebrae, ribs, the epaxial and hypaxialmuscles and the dorsal dermis. Their formation lays the basis for the metameric arrangement of the vertebrae and of the spinal ganglia. The formation of segments as well as their subdivision into cranial and caudal compartments is the subject of our investigations. We analyse the role of Notch signalling in these processes as well as spontaneous mouse mutants in which somitogenesis is disrupted.

Major research interests:Our group is interested in the cell biology of complex DNA viruses. How does a virus get access to a cell, disassemble to uncover its genome for replication, and how is – within a couple of hours – the viral program switched to virus assembly and egress? We have developed several in vivo and in vitro motility assays to analyse the cell biology of Herpes Simplex Virus and particularly the microtubule-mediated capsid transport by digital video microscopy. Using these assays, we characterize cytosolic host factors as well as structural viral proteins important in HSV1 entry and egress.
