President of Hannover Medical School

Hannover Medical School is proud to offer the first PhD program in Germany to be accreditated according to European standards. The main issue of this international postgraduate program is to train young German medical doctors as well as students from life sciences and to attract participants from abroad. The Medical School Hannover is making an important effort to get a higher degree of internationalization. Hannover Medical School is the youngest Medical School in Germany, located on the Campus Roderbruch, which is in the eastern part of Hannover. The main scientific topics are transplantation research, research in mucosal immunity, in infectious diseases and in immunity, in cell biology and specially in stem cell research. Most of all scientific activities are organized in a multidisciplinary approach, including preclinical and clinical departments. Many thanks to the organizers, lecturers and supervisors of this program. I hope that the best young scientists from everywhere will be interested in coming to Hannover. Chairman

The MD/PhD program „Molecular Medicine“ was established in autumn 2000. Last year, the first students did successfully graduate with outstanding achievements. Our program has meanwhile become one of the leading MD/PhD programs in Germany due to excellent interdisciplinary cooperation between the Hannover Medical School, the University and the School of Veterinary Medicine Hannover due to the support of the International Promotion Program (IPP) by DAAD and DFG. It is also the first German PhD program which has been accreditated according to European standards (modules ECTS). There is a good ratio between medical students and students from life sciences as well as between German and foreign students. This program attracts great national and international interest. Additionally, the MD/PhD porgram is the basis for the Hannover Biomedical Research School founded in 2003. Many thanks to everyone who has supported this new MD/PhD program, especially to those students who will determine the future excellence of the program.

Reinhold E. Schmidt, MD Professor of Medicine and Immunolgy

I. Current Status, Problems and Prospects

1. Current Status

At the moment there are 58 students in the program [23 women und 35 men; 35 international and 23

Germans; 34 medical students (incl. veterinary students) and 24 scientists]. The international students

come from Argentina (1), China (3), Columbia (1), Ethiopia (1), Georgia (1), Hungary (1), India (19),

Indonesia (2), Japan (1), Slovakia (1), Syria (1), the Netherlands (1), Turkey (1) and Ukraine (1). The

students are either financed by the corresponding departments or by scholarships (DAAD;

“Gesellschaft der Freunde der MHH“; Winkra Energie etc.).

Concerning selection of the new students, a 3-step level procedure was introduced in 2002. It consists

of: 1. preselection by the PhD commission, 2. a written test in the individual home countries, 3. an

interview (in 2003 in Hannover and New Delhi and Hyderabad, India). In 2002 an extensive

application form was developed, which as further improved in 2003.

The selection of the applicants is based on qualification only. The accepted candidates are supposed to

choose a department and a research project themselves. This means that there can be bottle-necks

regarding the guarantee of the financing of the students. For this reason scholarships were applied for

with e.g. the EU - Marie Curie Programm.

Students work on a 3-year research project in one of the departments of the MHH or at cooperating

institutes (see list of students). In addition, there is an obligation program of teaching consisting of

seminars and tutorials (see list of lecturers). In the first year basics and methodics of biology and

medicine are taught. During the second academic year, focus lies more on current research projects

(applied aspects). Since 2003, four main foci have been established: Immunology; Infection; Oncology

and Differentiation; Genetics and Cell Biology (see Curriculum, Fig. 2). Besides an extensive English

curriculum, guest seminars, scientific colloquia, discussions with the supervisors and technical

practical courses took place. Most important are the so-called “soft skills“ as well as seminars about

“Ethics“ (Prof. Schmidtke), “Animal Experiments“ (Prof. Hedrich), “Scientific Writing“ (Dr. Kruse),

“Presentation techniques” (Prof. Dierks) etc. The students keep book about all seminars. At the end of

every semester an evaluation of the educational programs and lecturers is performed.

After 18 months, students give an oral intermediate exam in the respective main subject and the

subject of the co-supervisor (presentation and discussion of a research paper). After 3 years the final

exam takes place in form of a public disputation. In 2003, six MD/PhD students (Massoumeh Attaran,

Yasmin Dulkys, Veit Erpenbeck, Gernot Sellge, Julia Skokova, Andreas Tiede) suceessfully finished

the program. 8

The ECTS System was introduced (credit points = cp; see Fig. 1). The program was accreditated

according to European standards by ZEvA on December 9th, 2003.

In September 2002, a nation-wide network of biomedically orientated PhD programs was established

by the MHH to which 11 different universities currently belong. In 2003, two meetings took place (in

Bonn). Discussions were going on about mutual aims, problems and cooperations. There will be a

further improvement of coordination of the selection procedures (exams and interviews).

2. Common Rules

On 15.12.99, a rule for the MD/PhD program was passed by the senate of Hannover Medical School.

This rule unites a regulations for studies and exams. On 12.02.02, the MD/PhD program received

authorization from the Lower Saxony Ministry for Science and Culture to alternatively award besides

the PhD title for scientists the title Dr. rer. nat. Such changes in the rules and adaption to the program

situation were passed by the senate on 04.06.02. On 11.02.04, the rules were adapted to the

suggestions by the committee of referees for accreditation and were overall updated. The PhD rules

consider all aims of the program.

3. Cooperation with International Institutes

Fortunately within the MHH there is an active exchange, i.e. participation of almost all scientifically

active departments in the MD/PhD program – whether by means of active organizing within the

MD/PhD commission, by supervising the MD/PhD students at the research laboratories or as lecturers

in the numerous educational programs. This goes for the basic scientific as well as for the clinically

orientated departments, for example: Biochemistry, Dermatology, Developmental Biologiy, Genetics,

Hematology, Hepatology and Gastroenterology, Heart and Thoracic Surgery, Immunology,

Microbiology, Nephrology, Neurology, Oncology, Pathology, Physiology, Rheumatology, Tumor

Biology, Visceral and Transplantation Surgery, Cell Biology etc. Therefore intensive cooperation

exists between collaborators (Post-docs etc.) from Graduate Colleges with the MD/PhD program.

Moreover, the “Graduate School” (Hannover Biomedical Research School) was founded in October

2003. There is close cooperation between the graduate and PhD programs of the School of Veterinary

Medicine Hannover, also concerning lecturers and students. Thanks to the scientists of the MHH there

is already intensive cooperation with European and internationally very well-known research institutes

(e.g. also by means of the European Graduate College “Pseudomonas: Pathogenicity and

Biotechnology“). Of course, the PhD students profit from this cooperation, too.

Major research interests:Endocytosis and Signal Transduction in the Nervous SystemThe goal of our laboratory is to understand the cellular and molecular basis of communication between neurons in the mammalian nervous system. To communicate neurons use chemical signals that are stored and transported in membrane bound vesicles.Endocytosis, a fundamental process common to all eucaryotic cells, plays a central role in the formation of the vesicles. We are studying the function of endocytosis in neuronal signaltransduction and the molecular components which form endocytic transport vesicles in neurons.

Major research interests:The main research interest of the group lies on the analysis of the molecular mechanisms underlying developmental processes during mammalian embryogenesis. Development of the Notochord The notochord is a transient embryonic structure that serves as a signaling center that is essential for the dorsoventralpatterning of the spinal cord and somites. Various mutations in mice disturb the development or maintenance of the notochord. Identification and functional characterization of the genes affected by these mutations is the subject of several projects. Somitogenesis Somites form as the result of segmentation of the paraxial mesoderm. They give rise to the vertebrae, ribs, the epaxial and hypaxialmuscles and the dorsal dermis. Their formation lays the basis for the metameric arrangement of the vertebrae and of the spinal ganglia. The formation of segments as well as their subdivision into cranial and caudal compartments is the subject of our investigations. We analyse the role of Notch signalling in these processes as well as spontaneous mouse mutants in which somitogenesis is disrupted.

Major research interests:Our group is interested in the cell biology of complex DNA viruses. How does a virus get access to a cell, disassemble to uncover its genome for replication, and how is – within a couple of hours – the viral program switched to virus assembly and egress? We have developed several in vivo and in vitro motility assays to analyse the cell biology of Herpes Simplex Virus and particularly the microtubule-mediated capsid transport by digital video microscopy. Using these assays, we characterize cytosolic host factors as well as structural viral proteins important in HSV1 entry and egress.
