Week 9 – 23rd March 2016 Sharing Our News 4Cs Learning Space Spreading to other Schools The work Ms Garven and our teachers are doing in the collaborative learning space has been so successful that many other schools have begun working with Ms Garven to bring some of these ideas into their schools. These lessons, such as the movie making and sound recording lessons are making their way into the community. Anyone who was lucky enough to see Mr Tattis’ 2T Assembly last week would tell you how exciting it was to see the students presenting their assembly in the form of sock puppet videos. Ms Garven is very excited about the building of a sound recording booth in her room and the Robotics lessons that will begin in Term 2. Gold Card Assembly next Friday Our Term 1 Gold Card Assembly will be next Friday. This is always an exciting opportunity to recognise all the extra little things that our students do, and to reward them for their efforts. I personally am looking forward to seeing the KSPS Choir perform some new material that they have been working on with Mrs Atkinson and Mr Tattis. All KSPS family and friends are welcome to come to the assembly beginning in our hall at 9.30am. KSPS Pumped about Irrigation Project Preparations are well and truly underway for an irrigation project that will see the water from the rooftops of our buildings spread out across our oval. Currently there is enough water in our tanks to significantly soak our fields ten times with more to come every time it rains. Mrs Kelley has worked tirelessly on designing a system that can deliver this water across our fields. With funds raised with last years “High Tea” and now sponsorship from Glencore we are able to turn this dream into a reality. A huge thank you to Mrs Kelley and our environmental team for their work on this project, it is going to save our school money as well as utilise our water resources sustainably. Easter Hat Parade and Pedlars Parade One last reminder that tomorrow is our Easter Hat and Pedlars Parade beginning in the quad at 12pm. Thank you to all those people who donated Easter Eggs to the prize pool and thank you to our team of volunteers for their work collecting and putting together the prizes that will be handed out at the parade. I know Mr Lindsell is looking forward to seeing you there in his role as MC of the parade. Mr Cameron Upcroft – Principal Relieving

Glencore Helps to ‘Green’ our Oval
It was the absolute pleasure of P&C President Mark
Newton and our Relieving Principal Mr Upcroft to be
presented with a cheque for $4000 on Friday to go
towards the P&C Irrigation Project. This generous
donation is courtesy of Glencore, with representative
Laura Barben very keen to learn about this project
which has been discussed at P&C meetings for
many years.
The money that Glencore is donating will allow the
initial infrastructure to be laid for the irrigation
system. Water will be pumped out of the 4 tanks
(which are full at the moment fortunately) to keep
our vast oval green all year round. Providing this
environment will keep students happy and healthy
thus having a positive effect on their learning.
There is still a little more fundraising to go to
complete the project, so watch this space! Special
acknowledgement must go to Mrs Ros Kelley for her
knowledge and leadership during this process.
Mr Upcroft , Mr Newton and Mrs Kelley with Laura Barben from
Glencore and Sarah and Tyler.

Environmental Success Continues
On Friday night our King Street Public school
captains and Mrs Stewart represented our school at
the local Tidy Towns garden competition award
announcements.
We were awarded a Highly Commended for our
beautiful school gardens and a Special Judges
Award for our vegetable garden. Looking after our
school environment is a team effort so thankyou to
everyone who has helped in any way to support our
gardens. We also want to give a special thank you to
Ros Kelley, Eric Ryan and our EWOKS for all their
hard work.

Parliament Resumes for 2016
Friday saw the first meeting for 2016 of our Student
Parliament. Members of Parliament include our
School Captains, House Captains and Class
Parliament Representatives.
The first order of business each year is for the
students to decide which charities they will be
supporting throughout the year. This year the
Pedlars Parade will be coordinated by Parliament
and will benefit Stewart House and the Bandaged
Bear Foundation. The students will also help Mrs
Kermode with the Cancer Council Biggest Morning
Tea and hold ‘Purple Day’ to support the Epilepsy
Foundation later in the year. In addition the
Parliament will continue to support our World Vision
sponsor child Onsy.
We look forward to watching the Parliament work
together with their fellow students to support these
wonderful causes throughout the year.

The Tell Them From Me Student Feedback
Survey
I am delighted that this term, our school, like many
others in the state, will participate in a Department of
Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student
feedback survey. The survey aims to help improve
student learning outcomes and measures factors
that are known to affect academic achievement and
other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide
survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and
effective teaching practices.
More information about the survey is available at:
http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-
parents
The survey is a great opportunity for our students to
provide our school with valuable and quick feedback
on what they think about school life, how engaged
they are with school and the different ways that
teachers interact with them. Schools in Australia and
around the world have used the Tell Them From Me
survey to help improve how they do things at school.
I want to assure you that the survey is confidential
and school staff will not be able to identify individual
students from their responses. The survey is
conducted online and will typically take less than 30
minutes to complete. It will be administered during
school hours between 14th March and 8th April.
Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary.
A consent form and a list of frequently asked
questions (FAQs) for parents/carers about the
survey is being sent home with students. If you do
not want your child or children to participate, please
return the consent form to school by Friday 26
February. The FAQs and copies of the consent
form, including translated consent forms, are
available from the website above.

Please be aware that we have an immuno-
suppressed student in our school. If your child
develops a contagious disease, please let the school
know ASAP. If you are unsure if the condition is
contagious, please still notify your class teacher or
the office so we can act accordingly.
Option to Receive Newsletter Electronically
Once again we would like to give parents/carers the
option of receiving the school newsletter via email,
replacing the hard copy given to students. This
environmental initiative has helped to significantly
reduce the amount of paper we are using.
If you would like to receive the newsletter via email,
please fill out the form below and return to the office.

4 UNIVERSITY OF NSW 2016
International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS)
Each year King Street Public School offers our students the opportunity to participate in the UNSW
International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS).
Students from Year 3-6 have the opportunity to enter Digital Technologies, English, Mathematics,
Science and Spelling.
Regardless of students’ results, they get a wonderful opportunity to experience and master the skills
of external testing. Sometimes students can have the knowledge but not the confidence when they
are put into this sort of environment. As there is more external testing happening right across our
educational system, it makes sense to offer them this opportunity if we can.
All students receive a certificate and an individual report.
Please return the attached form for each child to the school office with payment.
