Mission Statement Through the teachings of Jesus Christ and with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we, as Catholic Christians, strive to teach our youth, evangelize our community and renew our faithful. We will promote the principles of the Catholic Church

through Scripture, Sacraments, prayer, almsgiving and penance — helping each other to seek eternal salvation with God in heaven.

OUR PASTOR ’S PAGE

By Whose Authority?

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

A prophet like me will the LORD, your God, raise up for you from among your own kin; to him you shall listen (Dt 18:15). In our world, there are many voices telling us what to do and how to live our lives. Some of these voices come from the world of television and cinema; others come from politicians and their ideologies. Christians look to the Holy Bible — the inspired, inerrant word of God — to know about God’s plan of salvation and how we are to live. But how can we trust what is written in the OT and NT as truly inspired by God? This is a question of autho-rity. Unfortunately, the word “authority” is a bad word in our society. It is in our American blood to be mistrustful of “authority” or “authorities” due to the despotic abuse of power in the history of mankind. However, the gospel for this Sunday’s Mass recounts people being astonished at Je-sus for teaching with authority (see Mk 1:21-28). The Greek phrase in this passage hōs exou-sian echōn means “[one] having power.” The scribes of Jesus’ time taught from their scholarly interpretation of Mosaic law; Jesus teaches from His own authority, His own power. “I am the way and the truth and the life” (Jn 14:6). The first step in recognizing the truth amidst the confu-sing messages of this world is to accept the testimony given by Jesus Christ and to accept Him as Truth Himself. Truth did not end with His physical ascension into heaven; He founded an infallible Church to teach all nations with His authority (see Mt 16:18; 28:20). He also sent the promised gift of the Holy Spirit — the Spirit of Truth — to lead the Church into all truth (see Jn 14:26; 16:3). All these events of Christ’s life and preaching took place before they were committed to wri-ting by the sacred authors under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. It would be another three hun-dred years before the NT was finalized by the Church. After several councils of bishops (meeting in Hippo and Carthage), Pope St. Innocent I approved the 27-book canon of the NT (and the 46-book canon of the OT) in 405 A.D. As Catholic Christians, we trust that the divine authority with which the Church was able to finalize the canon of scripture is the same authority guiding the Church today. Rather than trying to interpret the Bible for ourselves with our own fallible authority, we look to the Church who has the authority of Christ Himself to infallibly inter-pret the word of God as it is found in Sacred Scripture and Apostolic Tradition. Forty-thousand denominations claim to believe in the “Bible alone,” but they do not agree with each other on what the Bible means. This is a major reason why I became Catholic. It made sense to me that Christ founded one authoritative Church to be the pillar and foundation of truth (1 Tm 3:15) be-cause He knew believers would face uncertainties about faith and morals. The Catholic Church arms her members with the Word of God; she enriches us by the theology of the Church Fat-hers, the Scholastics, and solid modern thinkers; she guides us through history by twenty-one ecumenical councils; and she protects us from error by the authoritative discernment of the Ma-gisterium. The Catholic Church is the sanctuary for Christ’s disciples, the place where we can listen to His voice and remain in the fullness of His truth. “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (Jn 8:32).

Yours in Christ, Fr. Lowry

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Season of Lent. It is a season of penance, reflection, and fasting which prepares us for Christ's Resurrec-tion on Easter Sunday, through which we attain re-demption.

The Ashes The ashes are made from the blessed palms used in the Palm Sunday celebration of the previous year. The ashes are christened with Holy Water and are scented by exposure to incense. While the ashes symbolize penance and contrition, they are also a reminder that God is gracious and merciful to those who call on Him with repentant hearts. His Divine mercy is of utmost importance during the season of Lent, and the Church calls on us to seek that mercy during the entire Lenten season with reflection, pra-yer and penance.
