The Largest Glass Conference in the World

We are especially pleased to use the Glass Performance Days heading after having called the previous ten conferences under Glass Processing Days. The change in name marks a shift in emphasis and scope but certainly not any change in our established, highly successful format. We continue to promote glass performance in products, processes and applications.

While we build on the tradition of previous Conferences we make special note of changes in our environment that also prompted to the change of name. Today we expect glass to perform and contribute especially to energy-efficiency in all applications, notably construction and automotive solutions.

There is broad-based consensus among the experts of our industry that we are capable of generating the technologies required and to a large part already have them on the shelf. What stands strongly before us now is to engage all builders of our societies from authorities to designers, processors and operators to put into practice the technologies offered. One of the break-through factors is solar technology and that alone offers tremendous growth potential.

In this Call for Papers and in the program for the 11th Conference this will strongly affect the details of the program and the contents of our presentations.

We welcome your contribution!

WELCOME TO THE LAND OF MIDNIGHT SUN!

Finland is a republic which became a member of the European Union in 1995. Its population is 5.3 million. Finland is the sixth largest country in Europe in area, with a low population density of 15.5 persons per square kilometre. The capital Helsinki has 561 000 residents. Finland is an advanced industrial economy: the metal, engineering and electronics industries account for about 60 % of export revenues, the forest products industry for about 20 %.Forests cover three quarters of the country’s surface area of 338 000 square kilometres. Other outstanding features of Finland’s scenery are some 190 000 lakes and approximately as many islands. Finland is situated in northern Europe. A quarter of its total area lies north of the Arctic Circle. Finland’s neighbouring countries are Sweden, Norway, and Russia, which have land borders with Finland, and Estonia across the Gulf of Finland.

Other outstanding features of Finland’s

scenery are some 190 000 lakes and approximately as

many islands.

One notable effect of Finland’s northerly position on the globe is that the four seasons of the year are clearly distinct from one another. The climate is marked by cold winters and warm summers. The highest daytime temperature in southern Finland during the summer occasionally rises to

almost 30 degrees Celsius. During the winter months, particularly in January and February, temperatures of minus 20 Celsius are not uncommon. In the far north, beyond the Arctic Circle, the sun does not set for about 73

days, producing the white nights of summer. In the same region, during the winter period, the sun remains below the horizon for 51 days, creating the polar night.
