ing mushrooms in the shape ofbricks to help constructionbecome sustainable andbiodegradable.

BBP: Are you encouraged or dis-couraged about the future?

Escudero: “I’m extremely dis-couraged by the future, but I’mextremely encouraged by the peo-ple of this world. There are somany bright ideas, like one froma Scandinavian engineer who’sdoing a contraption that movesalong the ocean tides indepen-dently picking up micro plasticsalong the way.

Caufield: “I’m kind of in themiddle. It’s difficult to convincepeople (of things they should do).One example is we know electriccars are less polluting than gaso-line cars, but it’s hard to convincepeople to give up their gasolinecars. I want to create solutions

that are not only environmental-ly friendlier, but also better foreconomics.”

BBP: You both have to givespeeches for graduation, how is thatgoing?

Escudero: “I have not startedbut I’ve been doing a lot of brain-storming. I’d like to incorporatewhat we’ve learned in school toactual world events, like relating“The Handmaid’s Tale” book Iread in English class to what’sgoing on in Alabama.”

Caufield: “I’ve already writtenmy speech, but will probably editit once or twice before I give it.I’m just going to be a little light-hearted, a little funny.”

BBP: What advice would yougive to those filling your places inthe future?

Escudero: Don’t prioritizeacademically. Most prioritize aca-demics, their work, their careers. What you need to do is prioritizefirst your family and what makes

you happy. If you don’t do that, you don’t have a life to beginwith.

Caufield: Don’t procrastinate.I almost never procrastinate, andI’ve always had time to do what Iwanted to do. Take things one ata time. It helps.”

BBP: Who are your role models?Escudero: I like Elon Musk,

CEO of Tesla. He’s brilliant and alittle crazy, but that’s OK. Hewants to send people to Mars by2050. Albert Einstein, justbecause he had a way of express-ing unbelievably abstract ideas sopeople and scientists could under-stand them, and eventually provehis theories.

Caufield: My dad, who alsowent to UC Santa Barbara andmajored in the environmentalsciences. I’m following his legacy. He was on the board of I Love AClean San Diego and he was avolleyball coach because he lovesthe sport. I hope I can be like himsomeday.”

GRADS >> CONT. FROM PG. 10

Individual concentration isvitally important whileplaying golf. On the

scholastic level, golfers competewith both an individual and teamfocus and the challenges can beeven more demanding.

For Mission Bay High sopho-more Andy Knight, this spring onthe links turned out to be a bigone.

Knight was the team’s MVP,helping head coach Gebel Ander-son’s squad compete againstsome stiff competition.

According to Anderson,Knight’s nine-hole differentialwas 83 (close to scratch). He shotpar or better nine out of the 20matches he played in.

“Andy has been the catalyst ofthe team,” Anderson comment-ed. “Knowing he will break 40every time he tees it up makesour team that much more com-petitive.”

According to Anderson, it isreally up to Knight how muchbetter he can get over his remain-ing two seasons in school.

“After the CIF Tournament thisyear (he missed CIF Regionals byfour strokes) we talked aboutareas of his game that needimprovement in order for him totake his game to the next level,”Anderson noted. “Next year will

be a pivotal year for him as ajunior when colleges activelybegin the recruiting process.”

Beach & Bay Press recentlycaught up with Knight for aninterview.

BBP: How long have you beenplaying and what got you interestedin coming out for the team?

Knight: I’ve been playing golffor around five years. When I wasin eighth grade, I would alwaysgo to Mission Bay Golf Course topractice, and every once in awhile, I would see the team prac-ticing. I ended up making friendswith a few of the players on theteam and that is when I decided Iwas going to try out for the team.

BBP: What would you say weresome highlights for you and theteam?

Knight: There were a fewhighlights during the season forboth me individually and theteam as a whole. Some individu-al highlights for me would be mygood rounds during the season. Ishot 33 as well as 34 a few times.Another highlight for me indi-vidually would have to be makingit to the top eight in the City Tour-nament, although I was disap-pointed as I lost by one in the finalmatch I played. As a team, we didvery well this season, and we hadquite a few highlights. First, weended our season with a goodrecord of 14-7. Also, a big high-light was when we broke 200 asa team. Finally, we qualified forCIF as a team, which was a hugehighlight this season.

BBP: With two more seasonsleft, any aspects of your golf gameyou want to work on?

Knight: I definitely need towork on quite a few areas of mygame that could help me improvemy scores in the next couple ofseasons. Full-swing wise, I needto make my misses better, whichwould mean keeping the ball onthe right side of the course ratherthan both sides. Short-gamewise, I need to work on pitchingand chipping inside of 50 yardsquite a bit as well as work on myputting so I have a more pure roll.
