    Literature and Era - Development of Taiwanese Modern Literature within Japanese Occupation

    Abstract

    This text aims at the relation of literature and the times, in order to probe into the developing

    situation of modern literature in Taiwan according to period of Japanese occupation. The first section

    of preface states three key pointsFirst, colonial rule of the high pressure. Second, the news control

    according to ' the newsprint order of Taiwan '. Third, pushing of' Japanese popularizing movement'.

    The second section enumerates the theory articles which the writers published at that time one by

    one, so that to understand the meaning and the influence contained in the article.

    The third section expresses three pioneers outstanding achievements in the new-vernacular

    literature. Through the analysis of the works, we can detect the idea of new-vernacular literature

    creation and the works characteristic in the initial stage of Taiwan.

    The fourth section proves separately into two periods. From August of 1927 up to July of 1937,

    this is the most brilliant development period of literature in Taiwan during the decade; and behind the

    July in 1937 of the unusual wartime.

    The last conclusion points out literature of Taiwan are one kind of realistical literature sticking

    on native soil. It is also one kind of protest literature against imperialism and full of spiritual meaning.

    It is a first cry of revolutionary literature, and a just call sign of resisting power oppression too.
