REMAIN vigilant with your children, especially babies. This is the plea fromlaw enforcement officials to parents.
Home Affairs has become a target for babysnatchings, after twobabieswere recently tak-en by strangers.
Policeareappealing topeoplenot to let theirchildren be held or carried by someone theydon’t know.
While both kidnappings fromHomeAffairsthis year had happy endings, thismight not al-ways be the case.

Mzila was arrested. She was released on bailand the matter is still in court.
Earlier thismonth, another babywas takenby awomanatHomeAffairs inmuch the samemanner as the first.

Home Affairs regional manager,Thamsanqa Luthuli, spoke out saying thatpeople need to be more vigilant with theirchildren because their offices are always busy. She said that there have been signs put up inthe offices appealing for vigilance.
Lucas Holtzhausen, director of Safe City,saidthatvisitingHomeAffairswasaneyeopen-er.
“It’s quite a shock to seehowmanymotherscome there to register their babies. They arenormallyaloneand inmany instances, youcansee that they are from rural areas.
“This ispartof theproblem. In theruralare-as,everyoneknowseachotherinaspecificareaand there is a strong trust factor amongst theinhabitants.
“When thesemothers then come to the city, theyareunawareof thedangers that lurk inar-eassuchasHomeAffairsandalsonearATM’s,”he said.
Holtzhausensaid that thereareanumberofsecurity officers on duty at the entrance toHomeAffairs and they need to sensitizemoth-ers not to let their babies out of their sight.
“We also find that mothers will hand theirtoddlers to total strangers outside a shop andthen go shopping. Other mothers will leavetheir children unattended outside shops onlyto find them wandering off.

BEFORE I became a journalist, I made aliving as a private tutor.
I started with a terrible hourly fee as Idid not know how much tutors are usuallycharged.
As I got wiser I increased my fee andstarted to make a somewhat respectableliving…enough to break even with the taxifare I paid for every day.
I was not a teacher, have never been, and I respect teachers and the work theydo.
I did, however, find myself rectifying alot of their mistakes when I was tutoringstudents in mathematics and the physicalsciences.
My first judgment was that thestudents who denied being taught a basicconcept in either subject were being lazy,as is almost always the case. But then Istarted getting calls from parents who hadvery bright children from prestigiousschools in the Richards Bay and
Empangeni areas. These children were getting distinc
tions in all their other subjects excepteither mathematics or the physicalsciences.
I found that a lot of the basics werelacking, not because the students werelazy, but because their teachers had failedto teach them those basics. Whether thisfailure was caused by a lack of knowledgeor time, I cannot speculate.
Academics from the University of KZNand Durban University of Technology arebeing quoted in many an internetconversation regarding the competency ofmatric mathematics teachers.
This is after a report was published inThe Mercury newspaper on Monday 21 July, regarding a study published in the‘Perspectives in Education’ journal.
According to the report, a sample of 253KZN teachers averaged a mark of 57%when writing a past mathematics exampaper, typical of what the students theyteach have to write.
The paper was separated into fourlevels (levels one to four) which increased
in difficulty. The fourth and final levelinvolves problem solving, which was mostchallenging.
At this level, the sample of teacherstested averaged a mark of 26%, which iseven lower than the ridiculous 30% passneeded.
Having encountered these kinds ofquestions a lot myself, I agree that they arequite challenging. The researchersquestion the quality of the material theteachers are delivering to learners if theyclearly fail to understand it themselves.
I have to agree with them, but alsotake caution in knowing that not all iscut and dry and that I am not an educationexpert. Clearly there is something wrong, but as to the cause of it and the solutionneeded to correct it, I have found that weare all experts.
On the digital version of The Mercuryarticle, I found a list of comments longerthan the story itself.
This is often the case with stories thatare the topics of many a drunken conversation or conversations that supportpeople’s cynicism on the government’s
failure. The (anonymous) comments are full of
“not surprising”, “dismal”, “blind leadingthe blind” and others questioning whetherall teachers are qualified to teach any subject.
Thereport doesnotmentionhow manyof these teachers are from previously disadvantaged schools and backgrounds.
I would speculate that the difficulty ofthe problem solving questions in thefourth level may be linked to their proficiency in the English language.
What we need to understand is thatthis is just one study that has detected alongsuspected problem.
The study’s authors do not speculatewhat exactly is causing the problem, onlythat it exists and that it is scary howwe expect these teachers to help pupilsgrasp the mathematics they teach.
It is not all bad, though. I have encountered several teachers who have helpedme grasp challenging concepts in mathematics. This story will unfortunatelyremain another talking point which willlead to debates in weeks to come.

Black MTN 8 for KZN teams
UNFORTUNATELY, passionateKwaZulu-Natal soccerfollowers will be forced to
support certain Gauteng teams. In the new season of the 2014/15
MTN8, there are no representativesfrom the Zulu Kingdom.
This indicates that last season’sleague campaign was not a good onefor all KZN clubs - AmaZulu,Maritzburg United and LamontvilleGolden Arrows.
It is now in the PSL history booksthat Arrows was relegated to theNationalFirstDivisionattheendofthe2013/14 season.
Also the PMB outfit, the Team ofChoice, failed to make the final cut toqualify for the early season Wafa
Wafa competition.The new season’s MTN8
tournament will be officiallywelcomed this weekend.
Bidvest Wits welcomeBloemfontein Celtic to BidvestStadium tomorrow night.
The game, expected to attract a lotof attention, will be between thereigning PSL championsSundowns, against Platinum Stars atLoftus Versfeld in another quarterfinal.
In another mouthwatering clash, the recently crowned BlackLabel champions, Orlando Pirates, will lock horns against SupersportUnited on Saturday night.
Pirates captain, Siyabonga
“Nsimbi” Sangweni, believes that ifhis team can keep or display thefighting spirit and strong winningmentality that they showed againstKaizer Chiefs last Saturday, theresults are likely to favour them.
“Taking part in the off-seasonone day tournament enabledus to measure our fitness levels andwemanaged to hang in there until wewon via the penalty shootout.
“Personally, I would say it was agood sign for the new season andan attitude like that is likely to take usfar,” said Sangweni.
On Sunday, Kaizer Chiefs will takeon Mpumalanga Black Aces.

Striving forexcellenceIWANT to repeat the statement made last
week again. We are letting the UMgungundlovu
districtfootballersdown.Ifindithardtoacceptthatdistricts likeSisonkearenowdoingbetterthanadistrictwith sucha finehistory in termsof football.
Football leaders, administrators, coachesand referees have become more importantthan footballers in this district.
We fail to understand that without players, there is no football. We need to get youngchildren across this district playing the game.
Young boys and girls in our townships aretrappedintheperilsofdrugsbecausethereareno alternatives for them.
Politiciansneedtowakeupandattendtotheneeds of young people in their constituencies.
There is a great need of football courts toprovide children with safe playingenvironment. If we cannot provide for youngpeople’s natural urge to play, we may as wellclose shop.
It is also critical that those of us who standup for football positions, do their jobs. We arefailing the legaciesofourgreat football leadersof the past. It seems like people are moreinterested in getting free SAFA internationalfootball match tickets, freebies and all kind ofbenefits associated with positions. Our job isto serve the game. Poor results at all levels area sign of our failures.
Youth development does not only entailexcellent coaching and training. It alsoinvolves properly structured competitions, properfacilitiesandsupport fromfamiliesandcommunities. Failure to provide proper train-ing and playing facilities is unacceptable.
ItbecomesevensadderconsideringthatthemajorityoffootballersareBlackboysandgirls.
Peoplewhoareemployed toadminister thegame should take their jobs seriously.
Howdoweproduceworld class footballersif we cannot get simple things like fixturesright?
I doubt if both SAB and Motshepe Leagueclubs are aware of the dates for the 2014/15season.
The fact that the debate is about the nextnational coach instead of how arewe going toimprove the standards, points to the serious-ness of South African football problems.
This is an appeal to both football leadersand municipalities in this district: Let usstrive for excellence in terms of servicedelivery.
We owe it to the sacrifices of the departedfreedom fighters to create a better future forthe young generation.
