Digital Citizenship UnitGrade Level: 8th Collaborating Teacher: Torri McCullough Topics: Digital Citizenship, Cyberbullying, Copyright Laws, Digital EtiquetteLearner Analysis:
The learners are 8th grade students at Robert Smalls International Academy. The students are composed of students from my Mr. McCullough’s advanced class. There are 14 students in all. This includes five African American students, three students are Hispanic, five students are Caucasian, and 1 student is of mixed race. These students are considered to be above grade level. Mr. McCullough used a lot of technology in his class. Our goal was to ensure that the students are aware of the responsibility that is comes along with having so much access to technology.
Prior Learning: Digital citizenship has not been taught at all to these students. They are familiar with the
term “cyber-bullying”. However, they are not sure exactly what constitutes as “cyber-bullying”. Most of the students have never sent an e-mail so things like “CC” or what should be included in the body of a message. Ironically, they believed that sending an e-mail was just like texting and it is appropriate to use “text-like” speech. There has been issue with things shared on social media that are inappropriate. There seemed to be very little understanding out how that may affect them in different areas of their life. In addition, plagiarism is not very well understood. Mr. McCullough explained that many students would complete their research assignments by copying and pasting information off of the internet.
