Since the inception of the firm in 1996, Christopher Simmonds Architect Inc. has provided a broad range of clients with the highest quality of service on exceptionally designed projects. It is an award winning architectural consulting firm specializing in sustainable residential and institutional building types, with particular expertise in community centers, facilities, and residential design.

The firm has become a leader in the design of environmentally responsible buildings by creating a number of pioneering green projects in Canada’s National Capital region.

Mr. Simmonds and his team bring extensive experience to bear on all projects, including:

• Proven success using the Integrated Design Team Methodology to create state of the art green building projects.

• Success in generating a high level of client satisfaction by creating effective communication channels with clients; discerning actual needs based on both stated requests and on anecdotal input elicited from all users of the facility; and offering practical and balanced solutions.

SUSTAINABLE DESIGN

CSA is a pioneer and leader in the field of Green Building. Commencing with the new Mountain Equipment Co-op Building in 2000 in Ottawa, the firm has actively pursued the energy efficiency and green building agenda. That project achieved a 55% reduction in energy consumption relative

to the Model National Energy Code for Buildings (MNECB), and was designed using the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) protocols to meet or exceed a Gold rating. Since then, all of our public and commercial projects have achieved at least a 25% reduction in energy consumption relative to the MNECB.

In addition to this project, the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority (RVCA) Headquarters was the first LEED Gold registered building in Eastern Ontario and achieved a 80% reduction in use of potable water.

2. DESIGN OBJECTIVES

SUSTAINABILITY:

Examples of energy efficient initiatives on some of our recent projects include ground source heat pumps for heating and cooling (The Eddy Condominiums, 1000 Wellington Street), integration of hot water solar and PV arrays (OCISO Presland Road). A multi-faceted LEED approach to environmental and energy standards has been used on all of our recent apartment projects.With respect to sustainability, we are considered leaders within the field. We have developed techniques that can be incorporated into our housing projects that work within the budget constraints, work to reduce life cycle costs, increase building durability and reduce energy consumption.

Further to using sustainable building technologies, our firm has pioneered the use of an Integrated Design Team Approach to achieving sustainable design goals. In this approach key team members are involved in tabling and assessing design options at all key stages of a project’s evolution including site design, building envelope, structure, HVAC systems, etc. The result is a track record of achieving high levels of environmental and energy performance with the most cost effective design strategies.

COMMUNITY:

In all our residential projects we endeavour to foster a sense of community through the integration of elements such as; informal gathering spaces on circulation routes, overlook of common areas, linked interior and exterior common spaces, and pathways as “streets”.

We consider our residential projects as part of a greater community, and because of this we focus on design elements that address an immediate urban context. These elements include the overall building mass along the street, outdoor common spaces, as well as landscape design.

CSA is currently working on Bloc 25, which is part of the first phase of a $1.2 billion project being developed in the heart of downtown Ottawa. Bloc 25 consists of 100,000 sq.ft. commercial building Zibi is being developed using the principles of the One Planet Action Plan and will be one of the largest sustainable developments in the world

KINGSTON TOWER

BACKGROUND

The Kingston Tower project provides a rare opportunity where many strong site characteristics are combined into one. Its location on the Kingston waterfront, its connection with waterfront recreation pathways, and its proximity to downtown, make this project particularly unique.

The proposal’s limestone faced podium forms a sculptural landscape element within the site that connects the overall site landscape design to the structure of the building. The design of the site and the design of the podium are expressed as one. Through the use of stone, the podium reflects the solidity of its internal program (parking) without appearing to be a garage. It focuses the expression on the sculpture of the podium and site landscape design. Its material character relates to the neighboring historical structures as well as Kingston’s historical built identity.

The tower that extends above the podium is split into two narrow slivers that shift from each other in the direction of the dock. This implied movement further accentuates the narrowness of the site while lightening the overall massing. One sliver reaches out to the water and cantilevers over the podium, further lightening the form while providing remarkable views out to the water. Long strip balconies layer the north façade, and although the units are stacked, a formal variation is expressed through the balcony lengths and their changing location. Outdoor Terraces sit at both the third level of the podium as well as a portion of the tower roof. Due to the shift in the tower, the tower rooftop terrace is given some protection.

BACKGROUNDLocated on Wellington Street, this 6-storey, 57 unit condo building has retail on the ground floor and a range of condos above it – from studios to 2-bedroom units. Targeting LEED Platinum the building does, among other features, have geothermal heating and cooling, use finishes that are made from sustainable materials, use water saving washroom fittings and have Energy Star appliances. There is also a secure and easily accessible bike room.

Other features include a rooftop terrace with BBQs and hot tub, retail on the ground level, modern interior designs, and a fully automated underground puzzle parking system (as “green” as parking can be!)

BACKGROUND

Tomlinson’s involvement in mineral extraction, earthworks and infrastructure formed the basis of our design, and the firm’s dedication to environmental responsibility is reflected in the character of both the building and the site.

The building is inserted into an undulating, bermed landscape which flows over the entire property. To arrive at the site and to enter the building is to experience the strength of stone and earth on which Tomlinson is based. The berms are cut away to expose natural stone walls at entries, giving an immediate experience of stacked limestone and concrete.

The bridge-like form of the building’s upper levels float above the undulating landscape. Their simplicity implies transparency, honesty and authenticity. Their relation to the ground below implies a respect towards the natural environment. The relationship of the different building levels with the surrounding berms highlights the unique design approach and natural context of the building.

The ground floor is embedded in the earth. The strength of stone and concrete is apparent to all who pass in and out of the building. The second floor is level with the natural landscape and grants an immediate experience of nature at play. The third and fourth floors float above the ground, granting a vision of the undulating terrain.

Currently in the design stages, construction is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2016

MADAWASKA OBSERVATORY

BACKGROUNDThe 25,000 square foot Observatory Visitors Centre will include a state-of-the-art digital planetarium, a display and exhibit hall, a restaurant, a boutique, a high-definition lecture hall, several special use rooms, a professional telescope control room and an administrative area. When completed, the Visitors Centre will be the largest commercial off-grid facility in North America. The building will supply all of its own energy requirements by utilizing photo-voltaic panels, solar thermal panels, and geo-thermal energy, all the while minimizing its water requirements through the collection of rain water and the recycling of its grey water.

The project metaphorically floats on a topography of the skies above the visitor and heightens the experience of learning about space and its elements while moving through the facility.

The undulating roof recalls the infinite landscape of space. Its angular shape gives the sense of an ever altering form depending on one’s position in relation to it. It is both enveloping and impenetrable. This roof form allows the visitor to never be

disconnected from the surrounding landscape, only touching the ground where needed in particular spaces, or floating above the ground to give remarkable views in others.

ECO RIVER LODGE

BACKGROUND

LOCATION: WAKEFIELD, QUEBEC, CANADANEW AREA: 10,000 SQ.FT BUDGET: $2.9 MILLION DESIGNED: 2011

The Eco River Lodge is a 13 room hotel annex to the Historic Wakefield Mill Inn, situated along the La Pêche River. It will serve as an integral part of the greater Wakefield Tourist area.

Natural design concepts are primary to the project in every sense. Wood structural and cladding materials are used throughout, and local materials were also used wherever possible. The siting of the building responds to the topography of the land and sun angles, while directing views towards the River. The building itself is built into the hillside, with a green roof above the meeting room, all of which gives a fluid connection between landscape and structure. In addition, this project is LEED certified and uses sustainable systems such as a ground source heat pump for heating & cooling..Christopher Simmonds Architect was also responsible for the master planning of the site throughout the design process and worked to integrate site, pathways, and park-like elements to create an overall project that was sensitive to the surrounding extraordinary landscape.

RIDEAU VALLEY CONSERVATION AUTHORITY

BACKGROUNDEastern Ontario’s first LEED Gold building, the RVCC houses the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority and is an exemplary project managing energy, water and resource consumption. It functions as both an office building and park visitor centre.

This 21,000 sq. ft. building is oriented to maximize passive solar heating, natural daylight and views of the surrounding landscape. State of the art grey and black water treatment systems have reduced water consumption by 80%. The building achieves a 42% reduction in energy consumption over Model National Energy Code for Buildings.

BACKGROUND

To move through this home on the Ottawa River is to enjoy a carefully orchestrated sequence of encounters with its picturesque natural setting. Views and light penetrate the spatial composition throughout its interlocking interior volumes. An elongated entry with a natural cedar planked ceiling brings visitors by way of the southerly courtyard to the very core of the site and the home. The result is a home with stunning views, and which enjoys both an intimate connection with the courtyard and a more expansive connection with the river.

This home was the winner of Best Custom Home and Best Custom Bathroom, in their size categories.

WAKEFIELD COMMUNITY CENTRE

LOCATION: WAKEFIELD, QUEBEC, CANADANEW AREA: 16,000 SQ.FT BUDGET: $4 MILLION DESIGNED: 2002

BACKGROUNDThis 16,000 sq.ft. building includes a Great Hall that accommodates community gatherings and a theatre; a library; and a youth centre. Designed with nature in mind, the building takes advantage of vistas to the surrounding forest and river valley. Landscaping features native planting requiring little or no irrigation, and supports the character of its surroundings. Storm water collection from roofs and hard surfaces is channeled to a retention pond which collects and filters rain water on site.

The super-insulated and air-tight building incorporates many energy efficient systems including a groundsource HVAC system, windows that are oriented to maximize passive solar heat gain, low flow water fixtures, and low energy consumption light fixtures.

Dynamic, crystalline exterior forms and sumptuously flowing curvaceous interiors have been melded into one glowing gem of a house.

Dining, sitting and family room spaces flow around the central forms of the kitchen, pantry and storage functions – becoming progressively more cozy and nest-like as they reach the family room space. The master bedroom suite, located at the main level, allows a direct walk-out to the hot tub and pool. Other bedrooms and a home office capture dramatic views of the lake. The flowing spatial experience of the interior extends to the landscape through the entry courtyard, rear patios and negative edge pool.

BACKGROUNDThis modern, light-filled home is a place of serene elegance. Nestled into a sloping terrain, it has an intimate connection with its surroundings along the north to the rocks and ferns of the forest floor. To the south, the expansive views to distant peaks and an ever-changing skyscape reinforce the feeling of a lofty hideaway.

BACKGROUNDA family cottage in the Gatineau hills infused with Canadiana shifts its way over the edge of a cliff to command views of the adjacent lake. The retreat is gently embedded in the Canadian Shield; the sleeping quarters firmly set in the rock while the cantilevered family room dramatically emerges from this stone base. The modest entry visible from the road leads to an orchestrated, tranquil path entering from the forest-side of the house and moving through the space as it opens up onto the lakeside.

The house illustrates a warm approach to modernism; white oak boards wrap from wall to floor enhancing the elongated shape of the house and slabs of silver maple create the bathroom vanity. On the exterior, the main volume is wrapped with open-joint eastern white cedar while the stairwell is encased in steel; both are left unfinished to age with the elements.

On the lower level, the dormitory style sleeping quarters are again embedded into the rock. Access to the exterior is provided by a walkout from the lower level recreation room, allowing the family to easily explore nature.

Natural cooling is provided by cool air rising from the lake, passing in through the lakeside openings and out through the clerestory windows on the forest elevation. The expanse of windows engages the ephemeral foliage from the treetops to the forest floor. The softness and shadows of the filtered forest light fosters an intimate relationship between the exterior and the interior.

BACKGROUNDThe hipped roof wings of this Asian influenced house radiate out in four directions to integrate the structure with the site topography and enhance the owner’s experience of the surrounding landscape. It enjoys an intimate relationship with its garden and outdoor spaces – at the same time maximizing the experience of the larger landscape context of public paths and conservation lands.

The pivotally located home office space has views through the open plan living areas to forested conservation lands to the east and south.

Completed in 2006, this home won Most Outstanding Custom Home in Ontario, and Ottawa voted it the Best Project in the Open Category.

BACKGROUNDThe linear composition of this house and site is interrupted by the volumes of lightwells, stairs and courtyard. The resulting interpenetration of views, light and space along the south side of the home result in strong indoor outdoor connections.

Heated exposed concrete floors ensure comfort in the presence of large glazed areas. Cabinetry in matte white lacquer and stained ash veneer flow through the interconnected kitchen, living and dining spaces. Reclaimed white oak boards clad the exterior volumes.

This is a LEED Platinum certified home and a multi-award winner in 2013 – Peoples’ Choice, Best New Build in Community, Green Custom Home of the Year, and Best Custom Home in its size category.

BACKGROUNDLocating the living spaces on the upper level is the key strategic move that gives the home expansive views over NCC green space and the Ottawa River. Honed concrete-block walls and grey-stained cedar siding pass from exterior to interior, successfully blurring the lines between what’s in and out. The main level contains the office, a guest room, the mudroom and an entertainment room. A sleek open-riser stair rises up through a large double-height space to the main living-spaces. In the double-height space, floor-to-ceiling windows create dramatic views from the second-level living space out to the ground-floor deck below. Linear pendant lights emphasize the vast volume space at the core of the plan. A minimally-detailed steel and glass guard wraps the perimeter of the opening, permitting visual and functional connections between the spaces.

This Gatineau Hills home finds a beautiful balance between modern and natural. The floor to ceiling windows invite the ever changing landscape of trees and mountains indoors, where a warm wood ceiling overhead and rustic hand-scraped wood floor underfoot wrap you in nature’s best. The facade of natural reclaimed wood on the upper level, white cement board lining the lower, and large expanses of glass throughout are the perfect package for this chic forest home.

The open ground floor, with its interconnected spaces, allows sunlight to flow through uninterrupted, showcasing the beauty of the natural light as it varies throughout the day and by season. The centre of this home is a high ceilinged pavilion of Douglas Fir centred on a stone and concrete fireplace. Sliding glass doors stack away to achieve unparalleled intimacy between the kitchen/dining area and the adjacent patio that overlooks a sheltered bay. High ceilinged spaces with operable clerestory windows ensure that breezes off the lake keep the home well ventilated.

A master suite is accessed by a glazed link which bridges the seasonal stream . At the opposite end of the home the bedroom wing steps upward to match the steeply ascending rock profile and provides stunning views to the lake vista. A pair of interconnecting bedrooms and a kid’s bunkroom are located at the second level while another bedroom with ensuite is perched up a final flight of stairs.

Simplicity and openness define the experience of being in this modest home. To the river, a continuous wall of glass spans the living, dining and kitchen space allowing a full panorama of the passing seasons.

Away from the water the view is framed and edited by a simple porch. The porch roof has been opened to create space for nature- a single Japanese maple is inserted as a foil to the simple black stained cedar cladding of the house. The garage volume is differentiated from the house by a cladding of grey cement board. To the river, the simple cantilevered form of the deck is surrounded by frameless glass. The porch and deck, occurring opposite each other, stretch the space of the living room out into an experience of the landscape and provide varied options for sun, shade, shelter, and view. In the kitchen, high gloss cabinetry with sleek pulls and a glass tile backsplash create a custom look while staying within the modest budget.

The juxtaposition of natural and industrial materials continues on the interior; bamboo stair treads complement polished concrete floors in the lower level. Bamboo flooring and cabinetry bring warmth to the master suite. The open-riser stair with its glass guard keeps the lower level family room feeling connected to the main living space.

Chris is the owner and Principal of the firm he founded in 1996. Born and raised in rural England, he moved to Canada and received a Bachelor of Environmental Studies from the University of Waterloo (Ontario) in 1978 and a Bachelor of Architecture from Carleton University in Ottawa in 1982. Chris is an accredited LEED® professional which he received in 2007. Chris is a leader in the field of ‘green building’ projects and was awarded the Canada Green Building Council Leadership Award in 2008. He is also the author of the CMHC Best Practice Guide on Wood Frame Construction (First Edition, 1995).

One of the firm’s projects, the Rideau Valley Conservation Centre in Manotick, was the first building in eastern Ontario to achieve LEED® Gold certification. Chris is a great believer in integrating the home or building with its surrounding landscape, in other words, taking a holistic approach to the entire project. His leadership and extraordinary sense of design have resulted in an award-winning firm that prides itself on strong innovative architecture that is respectful and reflective of the client’s needs and core vision.

Samantha is committed to architectural excellence and design innovation with 15 years experience in all aspects of project delivery with most building types and with some of the most innovative and respected firms in the country. While previously working at ZRPA and Saucier + Perrotte Architectes, Samantha gained international experience, with projects in Berlin, London, Vienna, and the United Arab Emirates. Actively managing project teams and business development, Samantha has highly developed ability and experience in conceptual design, design development, contract documents, sub-consultant coordination and contract administration. She is also actively involved in the education of architects at several Canadian Schools, acting as a sessional instructor, guest critic, and external thesis advisor. Samantha worked in a variety of projects such as the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics and the Canadian Museum for Human Rights.

Samantha’s responsibilities will be the overall management of the CSA project team and coordination of the design intent through all phases of the project. She will also oversee the consultant coordination.

Jan is a graduate of Carleton University in Ottawa. With over 25 years experience, and having been a licensed architect in Ontario for 11 years, Jan has a passion for extensive technical expertise in architectural projects of design excellence. Prior to joining CSA, Jan specialized in high rise residential projects and has led the construction document team of over 12 multi unit residential projects. He was also crucial in the detail development of the War Museum in Ottawa. role:

Jan’s responsibilities will be as senior architect and job captain. Although he will be a senior member of the team throughout the entire length of the project, he will lead the construction document team in detailing the project in the most efficient and thorough manner. His experience in residential design will prove beneficial in being able to provide the client and construction manager with the most appropriate building system recommendations.

Rick has been devoted to the fields of Architecture, Design and building science for over 18 years, with special attention to complex and specialty innovation in all areas of design. With a variety of exposures to building and design processes including; building from a young age, designing Feature film sets for Hollywood, award winning industrial design, and high end residential and commercial architectural design; problem solving has been a common asset in the realization of Rick’s projects. Rick has a commitment to strong conceptual planning through to project administration, implementing proficient operations at all levels of the building process. He has experience in all levels of project delivery, from conceptual design to contract administration. International projects include the Manjushri model School in the Himalayan region of Ladakh, as well as a consultant to several other school developments and women’s shelters in the area. Rick has experience in an expanse of green building technologies realized through the design and administration of The Eddy condominiums, a LEED Platinum construction, as well as the Zibi-bloc 25 adaptive reuse of waterfront properties, both of which are brownfield developments. His residential design projects have produced some of the most innovative residential architecture in the area and have been recognized with over 20 awards.
