Our annual contest aims at at-tracting Northern Hills residents to the idea of promoting activity, spirit and pride in our communities. This year we received many pictures of delight-ful yards from our neighbours, and we would like to thank all of the par-ticipants for their entries and all the residents for their efforts to keep our communities shining during the 2016 summer period.

As many of you are aware, the rezoning and redevelopment of the Harvest Hills Golf Course did go to Council on October 3rd where Coun-cillors did approve it. We are very disappointed with the results and we are having a tough time understanding how many of the Councilors voted in favor of the rezoning and redevelopment of the golf course. They did not take the needs and wants of our community into the consideration when approv-ing this application. Shame on you is all I have to say. The presentation to Council was very thorough and we addressed all the issues surrounding this application. I would personally like to thank Moraig and David for all of their efforts throughout this two-year process. I would also like to thank the Calgarians for Responsible Development (Marjorie Aucoin, Lesley Cooney-Burk, Mark Seland, Kim Hudson, Brent Rathgeber, Candice Jackson, Ray Crockett and Scott Blaney) for their passion and commitment to fight for their community. Thank you to the Northern Hills Board of Directors who supported us throughout this whole process. Lastly, I would like to thank the residents of the Northern Hills who fought a hard fight to protect their community and stand up for what is right. I
am proud to stand as your President and be assured that we did everything possible to STOP this rezoning and development application.
We must keep fighting for Northern Hills on issues such as schools, human services, medical services, green space, meeting space, adequate daycare and day homes, sport/recreation, LRT/ transit and roads. We must liaise and lobby all levels of Government to make this happen. This is unacceptable as we certainly do not have a com-plete community like we should. Our community deserves this attention and the NHCA will continue to fight hard for these issues because it is a must for our community.
The Board is in budget mode and if you are in-terested in joining our Board, we do have a couple of Board positions available. Please contact the of-fice, leave your name and number and I will shortly contact you. Being part of a community association allows us to give back to the community that we live in. It also gives us a chance to help mold our commu-nity into a healthy and vibrant one.

The SPRY gatherings and ex-ercise classes are held at the Vivo Centre’s “Child Minding Room” which is set up for adult exercise classes with tables and chairs for social activities. Adults 55+ are welcome to join the various indoor and outdoor activities that are planned throughout the year.
SENIORS’ EXERCISE SESSIONS: Fit-2-Age Instructor
The laughter-filled, age-appropriate, light exercise classes are lead by Tracy Rand, Director-Certified Aging Adult Instructor & Consultant, BCEM Educator.
The sessions at Vivo are every Tuesdays at 2:30pm and Thurs-days at 3:00pm.

Illegal EncampmentsA message from the Federation of Calgary Communities Building Safe Communities Program
Illegal encampments are complicated social issues involving people camping on ground they do not own or have authorization to do so by owners of the prop-erty. These illegal encampments can usually be found in wooded areas, parks, bodies of water and can be abandoned or still in use. When illegal encampments are abandoned it can cost on aver-
age $4,000 to clean up the site. If you find an illegal encampment in your neighbourhood call the City at 3-1-1.
Before it can be cleaned up and removed the Calgary Police Service (CPS) must place a 72 hour trespass notice before clearing out the area. It’s recommended that residents wait for CPS or Bylaw Officers to dispose of the encamp-ment properly.
Additional Resource: The Alpha House is an agency
that serves vulnerable populations
in Calgary. The agency has an Encampment team that helps in-dividuals who need relocation and provides support for those setting up illegal encampments with legal accommodations.

National Child Day is celebrated annually on November 20th and reaffirms our country’s commitment to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC.) As I am sure all of you have heard the City Council meeting on October 3 did not go in our favour. This hap-pened in spite of the huge support we had from the community including 40 speakers and many people from many neighbourhoods who came to City Council to show their support. It was an amazing effort by everyone and by the end there could be no councillor who did not know that:• The community overwhelmingly
opposed the development the way it was proposed.
• The engagement process with the developer which documented many of our concerns did not result in any significant changes to the plan proposed by the devel-oper.
• The Municipal Development Plan calls for Transit and amenity sup-ported densification but there are no amenities in Harvest Hills other than the golf course. And those close by in Northern Hills are oversubscribed or unavailable to residents of Harvest Hills.
• Approving the development amounts to a bait and switch. The city approved the golf course sev-eral years ago and listed it in the
Area Structure Plan as Open Space Lands and zoned it as special recreational land. Now the City has changed its decision allowing a housing development even though it goes in opposition to the Munici-pal Development Plan.
• The golf course was designated as open space lands in the Area Struc-ture Plan and the Municipal Devel-opment Plan says specifically that the City of Calgary will protect and preserve open space lands whether publicly or privately owned.
These facts were all made very clear by the NHCA presentation and reinforced by speakers from Calgar-ians for Responsible Development. Still, the vote was 9-5 in favour of the development application going ahead.
The face of Calgary has been forever changed by the decision of City Council to rezone land designated Special Purpose – Recreation. We are so proud of the community and the incredible hours put in by volunteers to fight the good fight. We gave it all we could and more. CBE announces new Legacy AwardCalgary Board of Education Board of Trustees
The Board of Trustees is excited to announce a new award that recognizes CBE alumni who have made a difference, and we need your help to find these outstanding individuals.
The CBE Legacy Award celebrates public edu-cation. It will shine a spotlight on former students who live our beliefs - that a strong public educa-tion system is the foundation of our society, and the legacy of learning we create makes a world of difference for all of us.
Our former students positively impact our communities, our country and our world. Legacy Award recipients will embody the foundation they received during their education and represent the legacy of the CBE: preparing students for life, work and inspiring life-long learning.
Our alumni are leaders, entrepreneurs and difference-makers. They are artists, trail-blazers and dedicated volunteers. We want to hear their stories and celebrate their success.

Harvest Hills Golf Course Redevelopment Application
I know that many community members are disappointed with the decision made by Council on October 3 and would like to know why I supported the application by Cedarglen Homes.
When speaking to residents I was always clear that from the time the golf course was sold by Windmill Golf Group to Cedarglen Homes in 2014, there was very little chance of the land operating as a golf course again or of the land remaining as a green space with no development. My advice to residents and the Northern Hills Community Asso-ciation was to make sure that the community work with Cedarglen and provide as much input as pos-sible on the plan even if the desire of the residents was for no development at all.
At the public hearing, Council was tasked with
making a decision on the merits of the application only, not whether there should be any development on the land. Given the limitations as Councillor to consider only issues of a planning nature at the public hearing, it was important that I focused on getting clarification on my outstanding concerns (a number of which had been brought forward as a result of the efforts of the Northern Hills Commu-nity Association residents in discussions with the developer). Some of these issues were:
• Like to like transition of homes
• Landscaped buffers
• Traffic
• Railway proximity
• Drainage
• Environmental
• Trees
• Homeowners’ Association
• Community meeting space
• Recreation
• Access to the green space and pathways by
adjacent residents
• Commitment by the developer to not move adjacent homeowners back fences
After asking many questions of city staff and the applicant during the public hearing, I was confident that my concerns with the application had been diligently reviewed and addressed.
I made the decision to move acceptance of the application because I felt that to delay the decision would not have been in the best interest of the community. The continued lack of certainty would have further impacted house prices and increased the probability of the application returning to Coun-cil with higher density.

Crews ready for winter snowfallCrews are keeping an eye on the forecast all
winter long, preparing roads with anti-icing solu-tion before the snow falls, and maintaining City streets as soon as snowflakes hit the ground.
We know how important it is for Calgarians
to get to where they want to go safely, and winter driving can be challenging because of snow and icy conditions. Stay informed during every snowfall by following @yyctransport on Twitter and download-ing the Road Conditions App for frequent updates. After each snowfall, Roads crews follow a pri-ority clearing system called the Seven Day Plan :
• Priority 1 routes, which carry more than 20,000 vehicles per day, are cleared to bare pavement within 24 hours after the snow stops falling.
• Priority 2 routes, which carry between 5,000 and 19,000 vehicles per day, are cleared within 48 hours after snowfall has stopped.
• Playground zones, designated hills, and resi-dential streets on Residential roadways are cleared on Days 3-7. These roads are flat-blad-ed, which means snow is packed down so it is easier to drive on, and ruts are removed.

The Alberta Investor Tax Credit and the Capital Investment Tax Credit are two new tax cred-its which will be available starting in January of 2017 to support small-and-medium-sized

#GetMovingYYC is a campaign to get Calgarians more active, more often.
Yielding to Emergency VehiclesTime is the enemy in any emer-gency. For everyone’s safety it is important for motorists to under-stand how to correctly yield right of way to emergency vehicles with lights and siren activated. You can help EMS, police, and fire get to the scene quickly and safely by following these rules of the road. When an emergency vehicle approaches with lights and siren activated: • If you’re in the middle of an
intersection when an emer-gency vehicle approaches with lights and siren activated, safely clear the intersection.
• On a one or two lane road, motorists should move to the right side of the road, slow down, and then stop. Remem-ber to signal.
• On a road with three or more lanes, motorists should move to the nearest side of the
road and stop. If driving in the centre lane, move to the right side of the road and stop. Remember to signal.
• Come to a complete stop and wait for the emergency vehicle to pass. Shoulder check for more emergency vehicles (there is often more than one!) before re-entering traffic flow. Remember to signal.
• Emergency vehicles might use any available road space to maneuver. This could include the shoulders or left hand turning lanes in order to pass other traffic.
When operating a vehicle:• Drive attentively and defen-
sively at all times. Be cogni-zant to sirens and be prepared to yield the right of way.
• It is Alberta law for motor-ists to slow down to at least
60 km/hour (unless a lower speed is posted) when driving past a stopped emergency vehicle. This includes EMS, po-lice, fire, and tow trucks with their lights activated.
• Do not break the rules of the road in order to give right of way to an emergency vehicle. This could include proceeding through a red light or making an illegal turn. Actions such as these jeopardize all motorists in the area.
• Drivers must place their full attention on the roadway and toward the safe operation of their vehicle at all times. The fine for distracted driving in Alberta is $287.00.
• Always leave plenty of space between your vehicle and an emergency vehicle should it be required to stop suddenly.
