A Message from the Principal, Mrs. Svihovec Thank you to all the grandparents who attended Grandparent’s Day at Centennial. This is such a special day for students as they spend time with their grandparents at school. Grandparents get to see how school has changed since they were young learners. I love to hear the stories that are exchanged between the kids and their grandparents. These special moments make me smile. It is so touching to see grandparents include other students that didn’t have a grandparent with them for the day. This kind act is modeling kindness and respectfulness at its best. I hope you all enjoy Pastries for Parents with the Photo Booth and conversation cards at the table. This may be a rushed time in the morning, but spending those little extra times with your children starts the day out right. Thank you to the Lee Family for working with the Centennial PTO for the great tasting cinnamon bread from Bread Poets. That is always a special treat. Lastly, a few things to note:
1. Just a reminder that Pokemon cards are not allowed at school. We would rather have you moving at recess than trading cards.
2. Cell Phones and watches with calling capabilities are to remain in backpacks turned off until the end of the day. They can be a distraction during the day when they are with students in their pockets, and on their wrists.
3. Just a reminder that only healthy snacks are allowed at Centennial. If you have questions, you may refer to the website or give me a call.

If these state qualifications have not been met, we will be working with staff to complete them in a timely manner. This may require teacher testing or additional college courses. If, at any time during the school year your child is taught by a teacher for four or more consecutive weeks (such as a long-term substitute teacher) who is not “highly qualified,” you will receive timely notice from our school. Please contact me anytime during the school year if you would like more information about teachers who are working with your children. We wish to keep our parents informed on the quality education we deliver. Sharing staff qualifications is an excellent way to show our commitment to students. Staff members at any school define the education environment. We are devoted to finding the best quality educators to work with your children to ensure that school is a place where they can succeed.
Information
Second STEP is the classroom-based program our Centennial teachers use to teach the development of students’ social-emotional competence. A recent meta-analysis found that students participating in such programs showed significant gains in social-emotional learning skills, attitudes, and behavior, as well as academic achievement. The research shows that students participating in a school-based SEL program have a better chance of experiencing success in school and life.* An important part of Second STEP is self-regulation skills. Centennial teachers use strategies from Second STEP, Conscious Discipline, and S’Cool Moves to help students self-regulate so they can be successful in school . The ability to self-regulate helps students get along better with teachers and other students. Students with good self-regulation skills get the most out of school, both in terms of academics and social interactions. This sets them up for being successful in life.*
The Second STEP program further promotes the development of self-regulation skills with its focus on Skills on Learning. Students learn four self-regulation skills they need to be successful learners: focusing attention, listening, using self-talk, and being assertive. These skills support school readiness and academic achievement.*
The Problem-Solving unit of Second STEP reinforces the use of emotion-management skills. Children are taught that when they are having a problem with peers, it is useful first to calm down, and then to apply a set of problem-solving steps.* You will see these steps on the Centennial fix-it. Remember a “Fix-it” is an opportunity to teach, not punish. We want students to see Fix-its as opportunities to learn.
The first month of Second STEP lessons focus on creating a welcoming place where students feel like they belong. They are reminded to act and speak in safe, respectful, and responsible ways. In addition, we have been reminding students of the “Roughrider 3” in all the different learning spaces in and around Centennial school. Teachers taught their Second STEP lessons that support these behaviors. They are now teaching the lessons that focus on the skills for learning: listening, focusing attention, using self-talk to stay on task, and being assertive when asking for help with a learning task. The grade levels may vary some with the exact topic of the lesson, but they are similar.

Please vote for Steph Braunagel for the Farmers Insurance Grant! Miss Braunagel wrote a grant for Flexible Seating for her classroom. She has a chance to win up to $2,500. You may vote once a day. If I receive the grant I would like to use the money for flexible seating. Flexible seating is having various options for students to pick
from to sit on for the day. It is wonderful and the research coming out about it is awesome. It is a 21st century classroom designed for
flexible learning, collaboration, and more. Flexible seating allows students to have choice in their learning. Every child learns
differently and it is being discovered that flexible seating helps our brains and bodies learn and to be able to focus. This would help
me meet the needs of my students. I want to create an environment where all feel welcome and are engaged in learning. This money
would be very beneficial for my students! (Thanks for supporting one of our Centennial Teachers- Miss Braunagel!)
Collect Box Tops!
Please remember to collect box tops! We have two submissions each school year. The first
will be at the end of October so please submit as many as you can by October 15th. Place
all of your box tops in a baggie, labeled with the name of your child’s teacher, and put them
in the bins located outside of the office. The class that collects the most box tops by the
second submission will win a pizza party!

Just a reminder that we will draw for the prizes in the morning and make the announcement at school. Names of the winning raffle tickets will also be listed on the PTO Facebook site.
Attendance Please remember to call the office if your son/daughter is going to be absent from school or if they are going to be late due to medical appointments. If they are out sick from school and go to a doctor please ask for a medical note from the doctor and turn in at the office. Also, if a student arrives tardy to school because of a doctor’s appointment we prefer that a medical note be turned in; otherwise the tardy is considered unexcused. A child is considered tardy if he/she arrives after 8:35. A child is considered absent if he/she arrives after 9:30.
COME FEEL THE MAGIC AT THE FALL BOOK FAIR IN THE CENTENNIAL LIBRARY! Join us at our fall book fair during Parent Teacher Conferences in the Centennial Library!
Proceeds from the book fair have been used to purchase ozobots, headphones with microphones, a green screen and many books! We will also have classroom wish lists if you would like to buy a book for your child’s teacher.

Drop Off In the Morning
Just a reminder if you are dropping your child off in the loop, you may not leave your car to walk
your child into the school. This causes somewhat of a traffic jam in the front loop. If you would like
to walk your child into the school, please park on the street and use the sidewalk to walk them into
the school. Also, I am still seeing cars using the lane painted blue that is close to the curb. This lane
is only for vehicles that have the correct signage, such as the bus that drops off students. Thank
you.

District News Superintendent Search Process is Underway By Dr. Jim Haussler, Superintendent of Schools
It is our goal to give parents regular updates on the process of finding a new leader for Bismarck Public Schools. You can read about it here or follow School Board meetings, social media or our website (www.bismarckschools.org) under News & Headlines. The first step is to find out what our Board, staff, students, parents and other community members want in a new superintendent. We will email the October survey link to all parents, so be sure to watch for it and weigh in!

Lockdown –occurs when there is an immediate threat to student and staff safety. All normal
activity stops and students are taken to designated safe areas. This could be on or off campus.
Shelter-in-Place –called when there is not an immediate threat to student or staff safety. A shelter-in-place is used as a PRECAUTIONARY measure. Depending on the situation, doors may or may not be locked, students may or may not be allowed to leave the classroom without adult supervision, and people may or may not be allowed to enter/exit the building. Examples of situations where a shelter-in-place may be called: reports of a wild animal in the area, robbery (armed or unarmed) reported at a nearby location but not on school grounds, escaped prisoner in the area, police responding to a domestic dispute, arrest being made near a school, etc.
Tornado/Severe Weather –usually initiated by the National Weather Service. Teachers and aides will escort students to a pre-designated safe area. These areas are generally interior rooms with no windows, hallways with no open ends, and basements.
Evacuation –initiated by the fire alarm or an announcement made on the intercom. Teachers/ aides will escort students to the nearest exit and out of the building. Each school has a “Reunification Area” where all classes meet and teachers take roll. During evacuation drills, administrators may stand in front of an exit and imitate a fire or other obstruction, giving students and staff experience with different situations. September is National Preparedness Month
The ND Dept. of Health encourages citizens to create and practice an individual or family emergency plan in case of a disaster. Visit www.ready.gov/make-a-plan for help on how to start your emergency plan based on the specific needs of your household. Residents can also go to www.ready.gov/be-informed for practical tips on how to prepare now, survive during, and be safe after multiple emergency events such as floods, power outages, an active shooter, wildfires, and severe weather.

Reunification Procedures In the event of an emergency at a school, we ask that you: 1. DO NOT COME TO THE SCHOOL. Law enforcement will not let you get to the school and you will potentially clog up roads that first responders need to use to gain access to the school and students. Wait for BPS to notify you of Reunification Site location. 2. DO NOT CALL YOUR STUDENT. This ties up phone lines for emergency phone calls to law enforcement and it also puts your student at risk in an intruder situation. If the students forget or don’t have time to turn down the ringer on their phones, your phone call could potentially give away their hiding spot. 3. BRING GOVERNMENT ISSUED ID TO REUNIFICATION SITE. Students will not be released to parents/guardians who do not present proper identification. This is for the safety of all students.
