Succeed 2020 Project Director Greetings! Succeed 2020 held their semi-annual convening in Bismarck on October 28

th-30

th. As always, it is good to see

our counterparts from across the state, build alliances, meet new co-workers, etc., but some of the most im-portant work that was done were the meetings we each attended. As an REA, we learned more about data and how to hone in on purposeful questioning to get at the information we need to build stronger programs in profes-sional development for teachers and college and career development for students. The director’s meetings, the “unconvening” sessions driven by the attendees and the stimulating, thought-provoking comments and questions all came together in a successful convening. Along with the convening, FHI 360 published a handout entitled Succeed 2020 By the Numbers 2013-2014 which gives snapshots of work around the state (we will be handing these out at various venues while supplies last)! A new web site was also published at www.ndsucceed2020.org/ where you will find a wealth of information about Succeed 2020. There are pages for students and families, community partners, educators and so on, so take a look! On the home front, we received the booklets and parent cards for the QPR Suicide Prevention Training that is being held on December 2

nd for RESP. If your school has not signed up yet, we ask that you do so as soon as

possible. This training is good for counselors, principals, and teachers. Have a very happy month of November! Respectfully, Yvonn

Still Time to Register for the eCYBERMISSION Competition The deadline to register students for the 2014–2015 eCYBERMISSION competition to receive a FREE STEM Research Kit is less than a month away! Sponsored by the U.S. Army and administered by NSTA, eCYBERMISSION is an online learning competition for students in grades six through nine. The competition challenges students to think about real-world applications of STEM by working in teams to identify a problem in their community and using scientific practices or the engineering design process to find a solution. Students can win on a state, regional, and national level, with national winning teams receiving up to $9,000 in U.S. EE Savings Bonds, valued at maturity. If you haven't registered your students, it's not too late— register today. The deadline for registration is December 17, but students registered by November 5 will receive a FREE STEM Research Kit, which includes a notebook, flash drive, and pencil. Have questions about the competition? Join CyberGuides and mission control staff for a CyberGuide Chat tonight (October 14) at 4 p.m. EST. CyberGuides and staff will be on hand to answer questions about the program, STEM pro-jects, and mission folder submissions. And don't forget, eCYBERMISSION is giving away mini-grants this year to support teachers and their schools expand their STEM-based community projects in their classrooms. Grant recipients can also use the money for professional development or to purchase classroom materials and equipment. To apply for a mini-grant, teachers need to request an application prior to October 22 and then submit the application by October 29. For more information, visit the competition website or contact eCYBERMISSION Mission Control at 1-866-GO-CYBER (462-9237) or via email at [email protected].

STUDENT AND COMMUNITY ASSEMBLY OPPORTUNITY Brielle’s Law – On July 6, 2012 the Deutscher family packed their vehicle for a trip to a family reunion in Bis-marck. It was a warm summer evening and the roads were perfectly clear. Allison and Aaron were a young couple who had just begun their family a year earlier with the birth of their blue-eyed daughter Brielle. Allison was now 3 1⁄2 months pregnant with their second child. This trip was a chance to share excitement at a family reunion, but they would never arrive at their destination as in a matter of seconds the entire Deutscher family was gone...killed by a drunk driver. Last week at the NDCEL conference held in Bismarck, Lynn Mickelson, Father of Allison Deutscher made a plea to ND School Districts to help get the word out about the free presentation he is willing to give to schools and at community events regarding this tragic situation. He stated he “does not preach about drinking and driving, but rather about choices and consequenc-es”. Although he is willing to present at a single school,

he would prefer to present to area schools in one loca-tion as it is so emotionally draining for him. Along with the presentation is the availability of the actual vehicle remains in which the Deutscher family was in during the crash. The vehicle is located in Fargo and is required to only be transported by law enforcement. If you are interested in having Mr. Mickelson and the vehicle out to your district or area, RESP is willing to assist member area schools and their communities to coordinate such efforts for this good cause. Please feel free to contact RESP by phone 701.483.0999 or by e-mail [email protected].

Nick Milbrandt-Texting and Driving Nick Milbrandt (21 of Kindred, ND) was convicted of texting while driving and killing a 61 year-old man. Nick’s sentence includes public service appearances to spread the word about the dangers of texting and driving. With input from the Robacker family, attorneys on both sides recommended 30 days in jail and a 100 day series of public appearances about the dangers of distracted driving. Both families declined to comment, but the attorneys hope the sentence will help spread a bigger message. Mark Friese/Defense Attorney: “He knows the importance of sending this message and he's excited to do so.” Tanya John-son Martinez/Asst. States Attorney of Cass County: “Mr. Milbrandt will have to do something that, in my opinion, is far more difficult. He will have to relive the consequences of his actions repeatedly as he sends this message to deter members of the community from texting and driving.” The North Dakota DOT will collaborate with Milbrandt on his public service. They plan to speak to students. RESP can be of assistance if you would like to have Nick speak at your school. Please call RESP at 701.483.0999.
