Succeed 2020 Project Director March… into Spring! Succeed 2020 held a few meetings in February for Project Directors and REA Directors that I was not able to attend but Mr. Mattson was there to keep me informed (Thank you!!). These meetings were about sustainability after our Succeed 2020 grant ends. FHI360 is helping us with this process and will continue to the end of it in June 2017. Hess Corporation North Dakota granted us the Succeed 2020 gift in 2012 with the knowledge that it would extend over a five-year period. While that time is nearing with only one year left, we have new challenges and opportunities to look for-ward to. But with looking forward, we must also acknowledge where we came from and where we are today. Without the Succeed 2020 grant, we could not have grown as we have with staff nor with our programs. RESP has grown from 2 staff to 6 staff. Our programs have expanded tremendously and we are able to help schools where they need it most… in their school. We are able to also make our trainings more specific to the needs of the schools, rather than throw a blanket they may or may not need. We truly transformed what we were at one time and we are at a place today that was merely a dream yesterday. With that, we know we still have more work to do and we are looking forward to it! No matter what the future holds, we must give our many thanks to the Hess Corporation for their belief in us and our state because we know that without that assistance we could not have grown as we have. We are grateful to Hess Corporation North Dakota and to all of you who have spurred this transformation and applauded it! Many thanks goes to all of our school districts, administrators, school staff, board members and many others who are beside us! Thank you FHI360, Succeed 2020 and all of you who make up RESP! Respectfully, Yvonn Weigel-Frank

Planning/setting up for the Career Expo is in full swing!

We are excited to have over 400 students registered for the Career Expo. It will be a great day for them

to learn about new and exciting careers!

This past month Denise and I discovered more great resources for educators to use in their classroom. All of these resources fit into at least one of Dr. Marcia Tate’s strategies to engage the brain.

FIELD TRIPS: Google Expeditions A virtual reality program built for the classrooms. There are over 100 journeys which teachers can guide their class. Teachers can also apply to have a Google expedition team to come visit their school. ISTE has an article describing Google Expeditions or check out the Google Expeditions site for more information.

PROJECT BASED LEARNING: NDDOT TRAC and RIDES programs The TRAC and RIDES programs from NDOT are free hands on kits for science, math, arts, language arts, and social science classes. TRAC kits are for grades 7-8 and RIDES kits are for K-6. Each kit contains all the necessary materi-als and curriculum for teachers to successfully use the kit in the classroom. Teachers can also request NDDOT staff to come to their school and facilitate a session with their students. For more information please visit the NDDOT TRAC website.

GAMES: Purpose Games Purpose Games is a free site which has fun interactive education games for almost every subject. Creating an ac-count is optional, but if you do you can earn badges and create your own games. As a teacher you can also setup tournaments for your students. The games on Purpose Games are a great way to have your students review a con-cept or use them as a pre-assessment to gauge prior knowledge. If you click on the Games link you can narrow the list of games to a specific subject by using the All dropdown menu.

Games by Subject Computers: Motherboard Quiz Geography: The Countries of Europe History: WWII Pacific Map Math: Length, Area, and Volume Music: Woodwind Instruments Science: Parts of a Flower Vo Ag: External Parts of a Cow

Additional Game Categories Literature Medicine People Sports Miscellaneous (Art, Vo Ag, computers, etc.)

Thank you Pete Hetle for sharing this resource at the Vo Ag Teacher PLC.

ELL Specialist March is such a great time of year! Many schools kick off the month with Dr. Seuss’ birthday, which also turns into a celebration of reading all month. Therefore, I thought I would share some of my fa-vorite books to use in classrooms with ELL students.

Bilingual Books: Bilingual books are great because they make ELL students feel included in learning with their heritage language, and they also help native English speaking students connect with their ELL classmates.

Count on Culebra This series is fantastic. They teach basic Spanish words, introduce come cultural ele-ments and are entertaining! Also check out Manana Iguana, Tortuga in Trouble, and Fi-esta Fiasco.

Prairie Dog Goes to School / Pispiza Wan Wayawa Iyaye This is a fun bilingual picture book published by the Lakota Language Consortium. The story is modeled along the lines of the classic Lakota tale, "Turtle Goes on the Warpath." Children learn basic elements of the Lakota language, including verbs of travel, sen-tence structure, animals, and numbers. Bridging Cultures: While bridging two cultures can be challenging for students and fami-lies, it can also bring opportunities. There are great stories that highlight the experience of living between two worlds, and can resonate across cultures.

Apple Pie 4th of July "No one wants to eat Chinese food on the Fourth of July," says a young girl to her par-ents who insist on keeping their Chinese restaurant open on Independence Day. An honest portrayal of the tug between traditions old and new, as well as what it really means to be American.

Jalapeno Bagels When Pablo must bring something to share for his school's International Day, he consid-ers several items from his family's bakery. But his mother's Mexican pan dulce, empana-das, and chango bars don't do the trick. His father's bagels and challah bread are ap-pealing, but not quite right either. Then the boy helps to make the family specialty, Jala-peño Bagels, joint creation from the cultures of both parents, and decides that it is the perfect contribution: '...a mixture of both of you. Just like me.'

Other Ideas: Biographies, books on cultural traditions (like food, dance, art, music), immigrant stories, folk tales, poetry, and holidays are great topics to include other cultures into your classroom!

Question Persuade Refer (QPR) for Suicide Prevention is a protocol for suicide pre-

vention that helps people to recognize warning signs of suicide crisis and how to question, persuade and refer someone for help. The protocol teaches “gatekeepers” (those in a position to help), to prevent suicide through hope and action. In this suicide prevention training, participants learn about statistics, learn the QPR protocol and practice the protocol through role play, which gives them a chance to walk/talk through a person’s wish to commit suicide and get them help. Short videos are also used during the presentation to give more insight into the global statistics, the QPR method and why it helps, and also some background on brain disorders that per-tain to suicidal thoughts and actions.

Ask a Question, Save a Life

For further information, please contact: Yvonn Weigel-Frank, Certified QPR Gatekeeper Instructor, at

RESP, 483-0999.

QPR is not intended to be a form of counseling or treatment.

QPR is intended to offer hope through positive action.

QPR is intended to teach those who are in a position to recognize the

warning signs, clues and suicidal communications of people in trouble to

ACT vigorously to prevent a possible tragedy.
