ASK 2016: Seeking New Ways in an Uncertain Environment
Overview – Program Highlights
National Pension Service (NPS), the largest pension fund in Korea, has recently named new CIO. Mr. Myoun Wook Kang will note the importance and the need to invest in alternative investments and will briefly speak about future investment plans. Man Group will navigate the challenges of hedge fund investing and KKR will view in global investors’ perspectives, exploring opportunities and values in Korea.
At the beginning of the program, Winton Capital Management will highlight on the importance of using bigger data for predicting prices, portfolio construction and execution program. Two Sigma Investments will outline the evolving investment management environment. Going further with details, Aspect Capital Asia Limited will discuss the opportunities to encounter the concerns of falling markets, negative interest rates and high volatility. Man Group will explore the developments in quant investing with their previous investment experience.
GCM Grosvenor will point out key considerations that are essential for the construction of the portfolio. EnTrustPermal will explain the improved performance and risk management with transparency in portfolios, as well as opportunistic investment strategies. Back to the overview, Lighthouse Investment Partners will revisit the roles and practices of Fund of Funds. Exploring the aspects of customized portfolio, risk management, governance and knowledge sharing, BlackRock will present how fund of hedge fund manager could support the investors. Specializing in managed accounts, Lyxor Asset Management Group will outline the model and the trend of latest matching the investors’ needs.
Old Mutual Global Investors will outline the unique theme of ‘Style Premia’ with an absolute return objective. Introducing an alternative strategy, ILS Advisers will explain reinsurance strategy and the best way for Korean institutional investors to access insurance-linked securities. Citadel Limited will view equities, fixed income and macro, commodities, credit and quantitative strategies as five core strategies and speak about its multi-strategies. Robeco Institutional Asset Management will demystify GTAA strategies, discussing protection and alpha generation. Paulson & Co. will explore current investment opportunities in the M&A arbitrage market.
Cerberus Capital Management, L.P. will discover the attractive investments in a low interest rate environment, explaining corporate middle market lending, non-performing loans, corporate credit and distressed debt. CQS will then introduce multi asset credit, looking for opportunities in a volatile environment.
Preqin will give an insight of fund manager and investor outlook for hedge funds, pointing out the key trends in 2016, performance, fundraising and new launches. Financial Supervisory Service will participate as a panelist and will be answering questionnaires that are most frequently asked by attendees. This panel will be moderated by Kim & Chang, one of the largest law firms in Korea.
GP Panel will be led by Citigroup Global Markets Asia and be discussed with Winton Capital Management, Old Mutual Global Investors, Leadenhall Capital Partners, Arrowgrass Capital Partners and UBS O’Connor LLC. The topic of the panel discussion is ‘Seeking New Ways in an Uncertain Environment’. Listening to different GP managers’ views on uncertain environment will illustrate the current situation of the global market.
There will be two LP Panel Sessions organized, where the panelists will discuss their future asset allocation plans and their views on these asset classes. The contents of the Panel will also include previous experience, preference and manager selection criteria. Panel participants are pension funds, government funds, mutual aids and insurers.

Stefan is one of the founding partners of ILS Advisers and since 2014 also the CEO of HSZ Group. Before joining HSZ Group in 2012, he was a Member of the Executive Board of Clariden Leu in charge of the products and services division. From 2000 to 2007 he was CEO of AIG Fund Management (Switzerland). From 1990 to 2000 he worked for UBS in various positions in investment research and asset management in Zurich, Luxembourg, Tokyo and Chicago. He has a M.A. in business administration and economics from the University of St. Gallen, Switzerland.
Hyoung-joo Lee is a member of the Research Department at Winton. Hyoung-joo joined Winton in 2010. Initially, his focus was on intraday trading systems and volatility models. Since 2013, he has been working on long-term forecasting in a wide range of futures and equities markets. Born in Seoul, South Korea, Hyoung-joo completed a BSc and then a PhD in Industrial Engineering (specialised in machine learning) at Seoul National University. After graduation, in 2007, he moved to England to become a researcher at the University of Oxford, before joining Winton.
Noriaki Hirazumi is a member of Winton’s Investment Solutions team and responsible for business development in Korea. Noriaki joined Winton’s Far East Business Development Team in 2009 and became Head of Korean business in 2010. His focus is on Korean institutional business including state-owned investment funds, financial endowments, pension funds and institutional distributors. Born in Kyushu Island in south west Japan Noriaki read economics at Gakushuin University in Tokyo. After graduation he moved to England to earn a Masters degree in International relations from Nottingham University before going on to further study at London School of Economics and Political Science. After a spell at Nichimen, a Japanese Trading House in 2000 he joined Mitsubishi Corporation’s commodity futures trading division in London as an account executive looking after Korean and Japanese sales.
Lorenzo has over 14 years of capital markets and reinsurance broking experience (both traditional and non-traditional) having worked at Aon Re, Banca Popolare di Milano London Branch and Aon Benfield Securities where he looked at the complete spectrum of alternative methodologies of risk transfer, risk financing and the convergence of the reinsurance and capital markets. Lorenzo, a Director of Aon Benfield Securities for five years, led the sourcing, structuring, marketing and distribution of various projects and transactions on securitisation of insurance assets such as catastrophe bonds, catastrophe swaps, sidecars and private placements. He holds a Master's Degree in Finance from the University of London.
Karis Ha-yeon Oh is Vice President of ILS Advisers and is based in Hong Kong focusing on the firm’s sales and client service. Prior to joining ILS Advisers, Karis was a manager of Korea Money Brokerage Corp. (KMB) Hong Kong Branch where she covered banks in Asia Pacific. At KMB, she was in charge of sales for the interest rate trading team and business development in Asia Pacific. After her graduation, Karis started her career at the Venetian Hotel Resort in Macao as Financial Analyst in the Financial Management Program which allows management trainees to rotate between different corporate finance departments. Karis is a graduate of Ewha Womans University.

Leif joined Old Mutual in 2005 and is a portfolio manager in the Multi-Asset unit. In 2008 Leif became a portfolio manager in the Quantitative Strategies Group where he co-managed a range of global equity market neutral and long-only funds. In this role he was involved in a number of key successful product launches including GEAR, the team’s first market neutral UCITS fund, and a European 130-30 fund. Prior to joining the multi-asset team he co-managed the Global Statistical Arbitrage fund. Leif has a BSc in Computer Science from Royal Holloway College, University of London and is a CFA Charterholder.
Omar Kodmani is Senior Executive Officer of Entrust Permal Ltd. based in London. Mr. Kodmani is responsible for the firm’s international business development. He is also a member of the firm’s Executive Committee and Risk Committee. He was previously CEO and President of Permal Group which he joined in 2000. Before Permal, Mr. Kodmani spent seven years at Scudder Investments in London and New York where he developed the firm's international mutual fund business. Prior to Scudder, Mr. Kodmani worked for four years at Equitable Capital (now part of Alliance Bernstein). He is a CFA® Charterholder and serves on the Advisory Board of the CFA® (UK). Sophia is a Senior Vice President of EnTrust Capital and joined EnTrust in September 2013. She is a member of the firm’s investment team and has primary responsibility for EnTrust’s credit strategy, including credit-related co-investments. Prior to joining EnTrust, Sophia was an associate in the New York office of Sidley Austin LLP and a member of the firm’s Corporate Reorganization and Bankruptcy Group, which she joined in 2007. While at Sidley, Sophia’s practice focused on representing both debtors and creditors in a wide variety of matters, including chapter 11, 7 and 9 proceedings and out-of-court restructurings and workouts. Mr. Abrams joined Cerberus in 2016. Prior to joining Cerberus, Mr. Abrams was the Managing Partner of the Apollo European Principal Finance Funds franchise which had approximately $5 billion of assets under management with a primary focus on acquiring distressed debt, real estate and non-performing loans. From 1996 through 2007, Mr. Abrams was a Managing Director in the Leveraged Finance Group of Credit Suisse, based in London and New York. From 2004 through 2007, he founded and was the Head of the Credit Suisse Specialty Finance Investment business which invested in non-performing loan portfolios and distressed assets. From 1996 through 2004, Mr. Abrams was a founding member and Co-Head of the Global Distressed Sales and Trading Group at Credit Suisse (and its predecessor Donaldson Lufkin & Jenrette, Inc.). Mr. Abrams began his career in 1989 as an analyst in the Investment Banking Division of Bear, Stearns & Co. and then as an associate/vice president at the Argosy Group, a boutique corporate restructuring firm. Hong Ming (Daniel) Deng is a Managing Director at Citadel (Hong Kong) Limited. He is responsible for managing the firm’s relationship with its Chinese investors. Prior to joining Citadel, Mr. Deng was a Managing Director and Head of Asia ex-Japan central banks and sovereign wealth funds’ flow business in Goldman Sachs (Asia). Sam-Young Chung is Director of Korean Alternative Investment Research Institute (KAIRI). Professor Chung is contracted to Man to provide advice and support to our business in Korea. Dr. Chung is an Associate Professor of Finance at Long Island University in New York City, as well as a Research Associate of CISDM / University of Massachusetts and Editorial Board Member of the Journal of Alternative Investments. Prior to his current role, Mr Landman was Head of Client Businesses in Australia, responsible for both distribution and management of the Retail, iShares and Institutional relationships in Australia. Mr. Hendry joined Aspect Capital in November 2002 from Folkes Asset Management. Alex Yang currently works at Kim & Chang’s Hong Kong office with the primary focus on the alternative investments and financial services industry. He leads the firm's fund formation team and also involved in cross-border deal structuring matters. Mr. Yang also advises on tax and regulatory matters for financial institutions. Prior to joining Kim & Chang, Mr. Yang was a partner at Ernst & Young Hong Kong and also worked for Morgan Stanley at its Hong Kong office in private equity Asia investment team as well as in-house tax counsel group. Alex also worked in New York for a number of years before he moved to Hong Kong 15 years ago. Mr. Yang graduated from NYU School of Law with JD and LLM (taxation) and an undergraduate degree in Economics at Binghamton University.
David joined Citi in 2012 as part of the Consulting team where he was involved in developing proprietary industry research and delivering strategic business solutions to hedge fund clients. This involved addressing specific business challenges, with a particular focus on issues relating to investor due diligence, distribution and operational integrity. In 2014 David joined the Capital Introductions team, based in Hong Kong. David has 20 years’ experience in financial services, the bulk of which has been in alternative investment management on the buy-side of the industry. Prior to joining Citi he was the Chief Operating Officer at a Hong Kong-based hedge fund. Prior, he held senior roles in the management of multi-manager hedge fund portfolios with Sal Oppenheim, BT Financial Group and Rothschild Australia. Prior to joining CQS in 2008, Simon spent a year at Peloton Partners managing a credit portfolio within the multi-strategy fund. Before this, he spent three years at CQS running US credit trading. From 1993 until the end of 2003, he was at Abbey National where he traded ABS and Corporate credit; ultimately becoming the Head of Asset Management, which encompassed responsibility for ABS together with investment grade and high yield credit. The National Pension Service(NPS) was established in 1987 by the National Pension Act to provide national pension benefits for the insured during old-age, in disability, or following the death of the insured.
