Who was Edward the confessorWho was Edward the confessor
Edgar the Atheling –
He believed he should be king because he was the son of king Edmund who was Edward he confessor’s brother. When the Viking king Canute invaded Britain, Edward the Atheling was sent to Hungary. He returned hoping to be king.
Harold Godwinesson –
Harold was Edgar the confessor’s brother in law. So he believed he should take the throne, but he actually had no blood relation to him.
Tostig –
Tostig was Harold Godwinesson’s brother. He was jealous of Harold’s more favoured position and wanted the throne himself.
Harald Hadrada –
He was the king of Norway. A direct descendent of King Cnut, he believed the Vikings should retake the throne, as Edward had no direct heir.
William –
William was the duke of French Normandy. William believed Edward had promised him the throne.
