Zator – over eight hundred years of

history1179-2013

Position A town situated on

the Skawa river in the south part of Poland, about 50 kilometres from Kraków.

Zator is the main city of the Carp Valley and the oldest carp breeding centre in Poland.

Short history 1179 – defensive settlement was established on the trial trade between Kraków and Silesia1228 – the first records about the village 1292 – municipal rights 1445 – 1564 the capital of Duchy Zator.

1513 – the Duchy of Zator was incorporated to the Polish Kingdom. After the war with Sweden , Zator was economically weak.

During the years 1772 – 1918 Zator was part of Austrian invasion.At the end of the XIX century the railway line was built. It helped the town to overcome the economic problems. During the World War

II, Zator was incorporated to Nazi Germany, and was freed on January 26, 1945.After the war Zator was turned into the biggest carp breeding centre in Poland.

MonumentsThe Town hall which was built in the XIX century. On its side wall there is a bas-relief.

The Potocki CastleThe Zator castle, actually a palace, originally of defensive purposes. The castle is from 1445. It is classified as a First Class Monument.

In 1836 it was completely renovated by the Potocki family.After the World War II it was turned into the fishery centre.

ChurchOne of the oldest architectural sites in Zator. Consecrated in 1393.

Inside there is a neo - Gothic altar and pictures painted by Slovak artist, Bohun.

The visitors can also hear the sound of baroque organ.

The Carp Valley In the 12th and the 13th century, brought by the Cistercian Order from Bohemia and Moravia.

The beginning of carp breeding in Zator go back to the 14th century.
