t has been a long tradition at Zaman to host an annual ISolidarity Festival. We would

like to expound on what this festival is and how it boosts the spirits of everybody involved. At the heart of the festival is the universally experienced desire to give to those in need. As the French writer and playwright Moliere put it so well "Every good act is charity. A man's true wealth hereafter is the good that he does in this world to his fellows."

The workings of Solidarity Festival are simple. Money is raised; goods are bought and distributed to the less fortunate. But are there other benefits beside these? We absolutely believe there are. Firstly, this week brings together students and staff as equal partners with a common goal. A lot of logistical work is involved. Much, much more is involved than reaching into a wallet! Tons of food is moved during the week. It is heartwarming to see all the enthusiasm for a good purpose that is exhibited by everyone

involved. Secondly, the partici-pants get to meet the recipients of the charity by going in person to many hospitals and orphan-ages. This puts a human face to

the people that have a much more difficult situation to deal with than us. Those involved are able to feel the gratitude and how much people appreciate this

knew the dormitory`s location could go there directly at 8:30.Thursday was coming very fast. Vimean and I decided to go directly to the dormitory. We thought that we would be the first at the dormitory but unfortunately we were not, because when we arrived we saw Monirath was standing in front of the dormitory waiting for someone to open the door for her. After saying hello we went inside together. Once inside the dormitory we sat and waited for our teacher to come

On Thursday the 10th of December it was HUMAN RIGHTS day so we go t permission from our assistant teacher Ms.Azize to go to the dormitory for the Turkish dish maklube. Anyone who wanted to go could give their name to Malin (our class monitor). Then we could get a permission paper for our parents to sign on Tuesday. After getting the paper we agreed that we were going to meet each other at school at 9 am, but students who already

we were talking and laughing in the living room when Sothaneth, Malin and Maliny also arrived. As we were sitting in the living room and waiting for our friends to come, they finally arrived. We all said hello to Sathya, M o n i t a , S e y m a , Cathemiel, Seyla and our assistant teacher.By the time they arrived it was time for us to start cooking.First ly, the teacher wanted us to divide into groups to make salads, fry potatoes and carrots, and set up dishes. We got into groups, some starting to work and other groups waiting their turn and watching a video in the living room. While some of our friends were frying potatoes and carrots we took many photos and made fun of our friends. At that time one of our friends, (Pov),

called us and asked for the dormitory`s location so we went outside to wait for her. After a short while she arrived at the dormitory at last.After opening the door for Pov, Bopha and I went to the kitchen to make the salads. But before that happened our teacher called us to gather around the table to make the Maklube all together and all of us watched how it was made and helped to pass all the ingredients our teacher needed. While putting the fried potatoes

Near the end we were very full but we still had to eat it all up because we had asked our teacher to put in some more rice. In the end we still couldn't finish it so we decided to throw it away. some vegetables such as potatoes, carrots and eggplants. Then the second group, Rachana and Sophea, had to fry all of thosevegetables. After that our teacher, Miss Vesile, told us to cut cucumbers and tomatoes. As for the cabbage and lettuce, Sorida had to chop them.While Rachana and Sophea were frying, our teacher asked us to go to the living room and we played the game called “Reav Bong Kong” with her. In this game, we all cheated. We wanted to catch our teacher, but we didn’t succeed. We got tired, but we had lots of fun with this

On Saturday, the 17th of October the students from 11F went to their homeroom teacher’s house (Miss Vesile) to cook the Turkish dish called maklube for lunch.On that day, there were only 6 students that went. There were Heang, Ranou, Rachana, Sorida, Thyda and Sophea. At 8:15 am 5 of us were in the w a i t i n g r o o m o f Z a m a n International School and we all waited for Sophea. She was a little bit late because of a traffic jam. When everybody was there, we prepared to get ready to go. We left the school around 8:45am by Sophea’s car and Ranou’s motorbike.Firstly, when we reached Miss Vesi le’s house, she said welcome to all of us and gave us some chocolate to eat. Then our assistant teacher, Miss Aziza, told us to come with her to look at the dormitory rooms. We went upstairs with her. She as showed us where we could sleep and study when we were visiting the dormitory. Everybody entered the dormitory bedrooms; we ran to beds and slept for a while. Everyone had chosen their own beds and some of us said that this bed or that bed would be theirs. After all the beds were assigned we went downstairs.Secondly, our homeroom teacher, Miss Vesile, called us to help her with the cooking. But first we had to divide into 2 groups. In the first group, Sorida, Thyda, Ranou and me had to cut

game.After this game, our teacher put the pot upside down on the tray and then she started to put the salad with cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce and cabbage in a circle around the tray showing off the lovely colors. After a few minutes, our food had already cooked so our teacher brought it to the living room. Before we started, we took many photos with our friends, teachers and the food around us. While we were taking photos, we could hear the sound “Krouk Krouk” from everybody’s stomach. We were really hungry so we put the food into our mouths quickly. We

forgot that it was hot, so our tongues got burned. But we still ate quickly and drank a delicious drink called Tang. 10 minutes later, ou r s tomaches were full. Then some of us started to wash the dishes in the kitchen, but Sophea and I were in the living room. We played with the pillows. We took all the pillows off of the sofa and used them to hit each other. After 2 minutes, we picked up all the pillows and put them in their proper place.

At 1:15pm we left our homeroom teacher’s house and we got back to school at 1:30pm. It was a little bit late and some of our friend’s parents were already waiting for us outside the school.Lastly, we all would like to say thanks to our homeroom teacher, Miss Vesile, and our assistant teacher, Miss Aziza for cooking such a very nice lunch for us. We hope that we’ll have another great time like this one again soon.

We were watching the slides of the previous solidarity festival almost every day during the festival. Kids are really eager to prepare boxes to help the poor. They are looking forward to do

The assistant teachers made some donation boxes and decorated t h e m v e r y b e a u t i f u l l y . However, the boxes were empty. Next was the students’ turn. They gave away their allowances by sacrificing from their snacks and drinks. The school informed the parents of this campaign and some joined with $100 while some donated around $ 10. Day by day, the boxes were getting full and heavy as the students chipped in with more money. It was such a good willed competi-tion. Was that all ? N o, t h e y ca m e u p w i t h different ideas. The school administration gave green light to food festival. Two grades were given one day on which they would sell home-made cookies, cakes, desserts or purchased drinks, snacks and fruits. The students prepared posters, the parents cookies, the teachers tables. There was such an increasing participa-tion each day. You would see the students trying to sell what they had in their trays. For whom? For those who are not as lucky as them and need food, money and shelter.The donat ion boxes were c o u n t e d b y a c o u n c i l o f teachers and parents and the amount was impressive: $ 5.700. This amount of money was collected from primary school students in a short time. T h e s t u d e n t s p u t s u c h praiseworthy efforts into this festival as they proved the fact that “If you are at peace, then there is some peace in the world.” These students will not see or meet the people who

That i s why, I th ink the students at Zaman Interna-tional School are very lucky and advantageous. Apart from studying in clean, purpose-made and cool classrooms, they are educated by experi-enced and dedicated teachers. What I would like to cover in this article is the extracurricu-lar activities in which the pupils may get the experience in life, get sociable and become more fluent in English. The ZIS pupils have been indulging in these kinds of festivals and activities since the beginning of the a c a d e m i c y e a r. F o o t b a l l m a tc h e s , i n - c l a s s te n n i s t o u r n a m e n t s , s w i m m i n g faci l it ies, shopping at the weekends, birthday parties, computer mania days, fun at Water Park , extra lessons can be given as examples. Although all of them are noteworthy and beneficial for the students, I would like to elaborate on the Solidarity Festival.

We study not only study the values in the classroom but we perform t h e m b y c a r r y i n g o u t a campaigns to help the poor, the orphan and the needy. The activity started at 10:00 and ended at 12:00. It was a happy day for them. They really enjoyed the activity. They wanted to stay longer but when 12:00 struck, it’s already time for them to go home. They wished to join the same activity again soon. Prepared by: 1-A

A t 1 0 : 3 0 w e prepared to leave school. We reached KFC City Mall within a short time. Some t a b l e s w e r e reserved for us. Each s t u d e n t s e a t e d comfortably while w a i t i n g f o r t h e luscious meal. At 1 1 : 2 0 , w e a l l

enjoyed our simple lunch. After the meal, we posed for some pictures and waited for the bus. Everybody had a great time being out with friends and teachers.

Even I and my ass istant teacher played with our students. We played basketball shooting, football and many more. It was really fun, we were really engrossed by the games and almost forgot to go home, so I told them we needed to go as the school bus was waiting, and one of them said “No, teacher. Just call my dad and tell him to pick me up over here. The kids really liked the activity and suggested having this activity one more time. This activity, Arcade games, really released our stress and at the same time gave us and our students the chance to play with each other in a very comfortable and relaxing zone. First let me define what Arcade game is. An Arcade game is a coin – operated e n te r ta i n m e n t m a c h i n e , typically installed in business such as restaurant, public houses, video arcades, and Family Entertainment Centers. First popular "arcade games" were early amusement park m i d w a y g a m e s s u c h a s shooting galleries and ball toss games.

In food festival, we sold many kinds of food like Khmer food and desserts, Turkish food and desserts, snacks, cakes, candies, jellies etc. For my teacher, Teacher Zehra, she sold Turkish dessert made by h ers e l f. I a n d my f r ien d s K i m p o r, K o m a , Va t a n a k , Sreypich, Rithya, Liza and Nita helped our teacher sell the food. I helped my teacher as much as I could. At the end of t h e d a y, w e s o l d a l m o s t everything! Only some jellies and candies were left. I was very happy and we thanked Mr Semih who often bought our food more than anyone else. I had one of the happiest and the most enjoyable days of my life. It was more enjoyable than last year.

t the end of November, we had a sol idarity Afestival. It was nice and

enjoyable. Every class in our school wanted to donate the m o s t a m o u n t o f m o n e y because this money would all go to poor people to buy some materials to give them, to the hospitals and orphanages. As for my class, 4B, we donated some money ourselves. My f r iend Sreyp ich ' s fami ly donated $100! Wow! That was a big amount of money. For me, I d o n a t e d $ 2 0 . We k e p t donating in our 4B donation box. We kept donating and donating until the box was full! So our ass i stant teacher, Teacher Sophal, had to make another donation box which was much bigger than the old one. This year we donated more than last year because we had a food fest iva l at

class, the idea of helping others gained concrete dimension in my students’ minds. Everyday, no matter how small, they tried to put some money in our box. I knew that the money they put was their pocket money, and this was the point that made the solidarity festival more important and special.

I a l s o a p p r e c i a t e d m y parents’ deep sincerity for this eve nt . 7 o f my st u d e nt s ’ parents came and helped us selling food. It was not an easy work, but, in the end every-thing ran smoothly and we throughly enjoyed the fruits of the Solidarity festival. The fruit w a s t h e s e n s e o f r e l i e f attained through the coopera-t i o n a n d t o g e t h e r n e s s . Participation of parents added a n e w d i m e n s i o n t o t h e Solidarity Festival. Yes! It made us a big family… Thank you all! Prepared by :1-B

Everyone was very happy and we really wanted to spend more time there. However, that was the time we had to come back. We had a great time there. We hope to have some kinds of these activities again for the next quarter.

About 11h00 am, the food was already cooked, so we set t h e t a b l e a n d h a d l u n c h together on the beautiful green grass with fresh air and happy faces. Time seemed very short for us. Only one hour later, we finished lunch.

We a r r i v e d t h e r e a b o u t 9h30am. When we arrived there everyone got off the bus with smiling faces.

First of all, teachers searched for a comfortable place for us to avoid dangers. We sat in the garden and started playing games. Some prepared some food such as; salad, chicken roles for B.B.Q while others were playing games. We spent around 45 minutes to arrive there by school bus. We left school at 8h30am in the morning. On the way, we had some fun with folktales, jokes, and some games on the bus.

We were so tired that we rested for 10-20 minutes after lunch. Then, we played more games and took more pictures. We played till 11:15 am and everyone was so happy even though it was tiring.

After all the fun, we packed up then went back to school bus. No one wanted to go but unfortunately it was the high time we went back. On our way back we stopped the bus because some of us wanted to buy kites. There were many kite designs like butterfly, mermaid, soccer and many others. Then we continued our trip back to school.

On the 2nd of December during our PE lesson all the students from 12E class went to the National Children's hospital to donate basic needs to all the patients that really need charity. We took 170 boxes from our school to the hospital. We went to the hospital in two school buses along with 3 teachers. They were our homeroom teacher Ms. Vesile, our assistant teacher, Ms. Azize and Mrs. Gosksel, our PE teacher. We had so much fun on the way there. We sang songs and talked with our teachers. We arrived there at 10:15. We went to 3 different buildings, each of us with one box in our hands. First, we went to the ICU building and we saw a lot of patients with different diseases. They looked so poor and they really needed help from us. We gave one box to every patient. They were very excited to get them from us. After that we went to the next building, which is for general patients. All the Staff were very grateful for the donations. Next, we went to the building where HIV patients stay. They looked so thin and we all felt pity for them. We really wanted to help them because they need to have a chance to live like us. We saw a baby whose parents left him alone and won't accept responsibility for him. They just left him for the staff

The English test will allow us to see whether a student needs to study or not at our English Preparatory School for one year before beginning their university study.

Overall, this exam will help the management board to decide which students should be accepted to study at the university and also those students who will be offered scholarships to pursue their degree at Zaman University.

The board wants to make sure that a reliable and valid test is being offered in order to identify students who have the academic potential to succeed at university and to also identify those s tudents who shou ld be financially subsidized. For this

To begin to answer this question let us first discuss the need for scholarships to s tudy at university. Scholarships are given to those who have academic potent ial , good character and moral values and who will contribute to the development of people, in this case the Cambodian people. Therefore, scholarships should be considered a tool to achieve academic success and to contribute something back into the community.

After this brief introduction, the answer is yes, there will obviously be scholarships for some students to study at Zaman University. Students, who can do well academically and be responsible and aware of the need for the development of Cambodia and Cambodians, will get a scholarship from the university.

There will be varying degrees of scholarships which will be available to students. We believe that not everyone should be awarded the same scholarship when we take into consideration t h e v a r i o u s s t u d e n t s ’ socioeconomic backgrounds and academic potential. In addition to the ability of a student's parents to afford a university education for their child, our benchmark will be the Zaman Entrance Examination. Accordingly, the university management board will only decide on the number of full and partial scholarships that will be given to students after examining entrance exam results and scholarship applications.
