Continued from page 1I cannot mention solely one name because it was a team effort which includes all the female teachers of our school.

10.Who prepared all the foods and drinks? In addition to the games, our dedicated female teachers prepared foods for their stu-d e n t s . S o m e r e s p o n s i b l e students brought the drinks. Plus Mrs. Asiye, Mrs. Rabia,, Mrs Sevghur and our supervisors Miss Merve and Miss Serife

cooked delicious foods for Z.I.S staff and students.

11.Who helped in organizing the festival? The principle of our school Mr. Osman Karaca and the Vice Principle Mr. Mustafa Ercan contributed in the organization of the Summer Festival.

12.Are there any plans to celebrat ing this Summer Festival next year?Yes of course. All of the students en joyed very much in th is

Summer Festival, they asked for o r g a n i z i n g n e w S u m m e r Festivals in the following years. As you know, we love our students and take their demands into consideration.

13.Are there any comments about this summer festival?Yes, largely positive, this was quite satisfying and motivating for us.

14.Are there any plans of improving this festival for next year?

Yes. Some surprises are waiting for our students next Summer Festival. For instance, they will have more time to play each game.

15.What are the advantages of this summer festival for the students?

First of all, the students take a break from an intensive tempo of the school and enjoy the games. Moreover, they can socialize by p l a y i n g t o g e t h e r w i t h t h e students from different classes. Finally, they get closer with their teachers.

16.If you're going to rate the outcome of the festival, which range between 1-10 will you choose, considering 10 is the highest?

I would rate it 8.After we had an interview with our Reading teacher, Miss. Seda Mecit, we have conversed with some s tuden ts f rom o ther classes.

“We were responsible for the drawing game. There were a lot of visitors that were interested in our game because they love to draw and some of them just came for candies (laughing) but their paintings were very nice. Each one of them was really good and very creative and there were lots of winners. The winner got 2 or 3 candies and the ones who were lost also got a candy. We had lots of fun on that day. We also wish that we could have this kind of activity for the next academic year. Thanks a lot!”RACHNY AND SALIHA

“For next summer festival, I hope that there will be more enjoyable games, funny games. And each game sould last at least 30 minutes. There will be more delicious foods. And there will be some games like:- song contest- drama/ sketch contest- bicycle race- running race... etc...Also the shirt will have a better design than this year.I hope everyone will enjoy with next year Summer Festival. Thank you!”Visoth Thida

There were many games to play such as Musical Chair, Tomato Dance, Basket shooting, Funny Make-Up, Sack Race, etc... While we were playing Sack Race, we suddenly fell over each others. Those games were p re t t y exciting. Although we didn't win any prizes one of our friends won a Barbie Doll. We really appreci-ated this Summer Festival and we hope that there wi l l be another Summer Festival next year. Thanks!”JESSICA AND BORAMEY

“We were responsible for foods, we so ld Khmer t rad i t i ona l desserts. There were many people that came and bought our food, they loved it so much. We were very glad to sell the foods. We are looking forward for the second Summer Festival next year. Thank you!”Chorly and Thida

“We really enjoyed the Festival, This is the first time we have celebrate the Summer Festival and it was very exciting. We

enjoyed playing games; the best part had to be the food because there were many different kinds of food. However, it was a really hot morning and some games were very crowded so it was hard to join. We hope next year we can celebrate th is summer festival the whole day because this year we didn't have enough time to participate in the games and our tickets were left behind. Thank you!”Vichta and Julie

“I felt tired but I was very happy to join because there were many people that came to my stall (laughing). One of my friends said she was happy to meet many people and she felt very tired after the games. Even though we were really exhausted but it was worth the time that we had spent there . A f te r the f e s t i v a l , w e w e r e s o g l a d because all the number that we had in our box were all sold out. It wasn't what we'd expected earlier. We're definitely going to join the next Summer Festival next year!”Dory

As a result, we've seen that the Summer Festival was another great achievement of Zaman Internat ional School . Even thouth if it was the first festival in our school all the teachers and students were very satisfied with

the outcome of what they had done. We are expect ing to celebrate another Summer Fest ival next year with our friends, teachers and family again for the second time.Written by Sithyna and Bopha

ZAMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL NEWSPAPER 4

This is the second year for the science project competition. The final elimination was held at Zaman International School on 12 of April 2008. In order to know more detail about the competi-tion, 11F had an interview with Mr. Murat. Below are some of the interesting questions.-What is the purpose of prepar-ing the science project competi-tion?The aim is to let the students have a part in preparing the project, by letting them find the project and materials, preparing the materials and finding a way to do and try to understand how it works themselves. The teachers only gave some small advice to them, so this would improve the student's motivation toward education and also help them to think with in a scientific way and learn scientific methods.-How many projects joined the compet i t ion? How did they el iminate i t? Who were the judges? At the beginning there were totally 50 projects. In the first elimination, the subject teachers eliminated some of the projects and choose only 5 projects for each subject, so in the final round there were only 20 projects from 4 sub jec t s (Ma thema t i c s , chemistry, physics and biology). There were 7 judges, they are all science teacher: Mr. Murat, Mr.

Gurkan, Ms. Yasemin, Ms. Serap, Mr. Yasin, Mr. Selmani, and Mr. Mustafa.-What were the factors that the judges evaluated on?There were 5 important factors for the judges to evaluate. The first thing was the display Board (30points). They didn't only look at the decorating, but also the d e t a i l . S e c o n d w a s t h e Explanation (35 points). They tried to find out whether the students understood their project well or just reading from the paper. Another fac tor was Demonstration (30 points), the judges wanted to know if the project was hand made by the competitors or just bought it from somewhere. By the way, the judges asked some questions and if the competitor made could answer them very well he/ she would get 35 points. The last thing was practicality (20 points), this part was evaluated on the work of the project that would be useful in everyday life.-Who were the 3 winners for this competition? After a hard decision by the judges, the f i rst p lace was awarded to a student from 11E who got points. The second p lace was g iven to a 11F student, Chea Nalin, who got points. The third winner was... from 11B, who was the only boy in the top 3.

-What were the improvements or changes from last year? There were many improve-ments, because last year was the first time that the school held this kind of competition, so that the students didn't understand this competition very well. And also the some of the project last year were very simple, but this year was different. The students had more experience, they worked harder. Some of them worked very hard to find the information for their project without depending on their teacher much. This year it was well organized.-Are there any plans for next year

Science Project Competition?I n o r d e r t o c h a l l e n g e o u r students, we will let the students compete with outside schools and give a chance to other school's students to participate in this competition. We plan to m a k e a S c i e n c e P r o j e c t Competition in Phnom Penh for next year, but for now it's just a plan.-Mr. Murat's advise for students, who want to prepare to do a better project next year:For these past two years, the students have done their work quite well, but improvements will always be needed year by year. Preparation is the most impor-tant part. The students should start to prepare their projects one o r t w o m o n t h b e f o r e t h e competition. They also should collect the data for the project from many sources, which will help them understand the project from different points of view. Here are the descriptions from the 1st winner about her project:Our project is really simple but useful. This project is about a Pot in pot refrigerator. The fridge made up of two pots; one is big and the other one is small. We use six pots of different sizes to make different spaces between each pot as we wanted to test whether the space affects the temperature or not. We filled the space with three different kinds of sand and added water in it. Finally, we put some vegetables in it to observe the length it can be presented and covered the top part with dampened cloth.

Science Project Competition

succeed in this competition is that you have to be sure what subject you do and try to find as many kinds of information about your project.

The hardest part of my project is I have t o r emember a l l t he algorithms and all of them were similar to each other. It was really confusing. However, that's not all. Another part was that all the rotation has their own symbol. In order to rotate it fast, you had to automatically know which way you were rotating. Finally I want to thank my classmates, for their support.

This is the word from third winner:The project that i chose for the science project competition was Alarm System. It is related with physics section. This Alarm System is a kind of device that will protect people from crimes such as burglaries, stealing, etc.

The reason that makes me choose that project is I think due to development of technology, industrial ized countries are becoming richer and richer with t h e i r f a c t o r i e s a n d o t h e r machines which can cause hazardous effects to environ-ment. Nowadays, there are big changes in our climate. As a result, farmers and others are starting to lose their jobs and demand for food. People will do anything to feed themselves. For instance, they will steal other people properties. Thus, with this small simple device I hope we can reduce this kind of problem.

I had been preparing thus simple project for around 2 months before joining the competition.

For being the 3rd place, I am not that disappointed because I do believe that for those who got the 1st and 2nd position were trying harder than me. Moreover, they could prepare a much better board than I could do. Therefore, they deserve to get a better position.

The reasons that I join this competition are that is an annual competition. Furthermore, this competition enforces students to work harder and spend great efforts on their own projects.

Continued from page 4The temperature inside the pot was 4°c lower than outside because of water vaporization reac t i on . When the wa te r evaporates, it absorbs the heat from the inner pot as it is an endothermic reaction. Also the beach sand showed greatest result.

I think our project will play a vital role in developing countries, especially in our country. As we know the massive majority of our country can't access electricity. This has ruined many family lives. Our project will help them to keep their food, get rid of disease, develop education plus increase family income.

From the start it seemed that our project should have taken less than a week to be completed but actually we spent almost one month to complete. The most difficult part is finding the clay pots, and we searched all places in Phnom Penh but we could not even get a suitable one. This took us half a month to find the pots.

Mr. Mustafa Dur helped us a lot. He gave us the idea and also helped us understand the project better.

We fe l t rea l l y exc i ted and impressed when we find out that our project was the 1st one.

From the second winner,CHEA NALIN:My project was about how to solve the Rubik's cube as fast as possible. And all the 6 colors must match each other. My best time was 5minutes. But every improvement can be done by practicing so my latest record is one and a half minute. It took me nearly a month to prepare the b o a r d a n d c o m p l e t e d m y training.

Firstly, I wanted to join this competition but I don't know which project I should choose. Thanks to Mr. Selmani he advised me to choose th is project. I thought it was an interesting idea; moreover this project seems like a challenge for the brain works so I started to search for informat ion and prepared for the project.

ZAMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL NEWSPAPER 6

From the success of the first and second Science Fair in 2006 and 2007, our third annual Science Fair between April 24-26, 2008 was he ld at Zaman's High School Campus in Phnom Penh.

This year, the amount of visitors has increased to over 5000 students from 10 public schools plus Zaman high school and primary school students were invited to explore the entire fair. Most of the public schools were from grade 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10. The purpose of inviting public schools to attend our Science Fair was to give them a chance to see the creative work of the fair and we also wanted to advertise our school to those visitors.

ZIS p lans to organize th is occasion every year. We want to develop the fair so that students will learn what sciences is about. Moreover, they will understand what they can do in the real world. The important part is that students will try to join and prepare the projects very well. They can learn to get new ideas and see the difficulties while they were preparing the projects. After all the hard working and boards preparing, there were 103 projects and 134 duty students who were chosen to present projects at the Science Fair.

Those 103 projects were from C o m p u t e r , M a t h e m a t i c s , Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Turkish, Khmer literature and English (Including 20 projects from Science Competition). And the 134 students were from 8th grade to 11th grade.

The presenters were chosen careful ly according to their a v e r a g e s a n d t e a c h e r ' s evaluation whether they ware hard working or not, in order to answer all the questions that will be asked on Science Fair days and to present their projects perfectly. For projects prepara-tion, the students have taken almost a month or two. They got adv i ce f r om the i r sub jec t teachers.

We noticed the differences between last year and this year, there were more projects than last year, students were more experienced with their work also the number of duty students had decreased. Additionally, last year it was very hot, so this year, we installed water fan to cool up the environment and we rented a company to design the tables. We have provided lunch slips so that lunch will be easily arranged for students and ID cards to ident i f y wh ich sub jec t the students are responsible for. We have seen that the Science Fair's

logo has been changed, and this year it was designed by a student from boy side.

This year, we didn't have so many problems to deal with like last year because most of the problems had been solved. For instance, last year we faced losing control of students, there w e r e t o o m a n y s t u d e n t s including the presenters. That's the reason why we had to decrease the amount of duty students.

Even though most of the problems had been solved, we still have some obstructions such as the place: there were many visitors that came from public schools and our place was too

small for the fair. We discussed and we made suggestions for hosting another fair in a different place apart from our school. Also, the idea of putting cloth on the tables was very successful and t hus we a re go ing t o continue this system.

As for the visitors, some teachers said that “I liked the fair; unfortunately some projects are same as last year. Anyway, I still congratulated the students for this well prepared fair. ” In addition, Mr San Chhay, our mathematics teacher also stated that “It was superior, because students could understand better about science's end, it enables the students to do researches from lessons and experience in the real world or can use some of those works in real life. The fair keeps on improving from one year to another.” M r. Yas in E rdem, b i o l ogy teacher, claimed that “It was wonderful. All the plans had been prepared a month before. I was so happy and proud to see that the fair was well organized. I believe that next year the fair will even be better. And I'm looking forward to it.” Followed by Mr. Phirun Meas who believed that, “It was good, most students understood well about the theory of the projects, this is a so called another unique way of studying because there aren't any private schools that host a fair like this.” Mrs Khema Tout added that this year's Science Fair was as successful as last years in but most of the games had been too easy; she expected more brain thinking should be included.

Zaman's FamilyContinued from page 6Mr. Selmani Yazaci said that tomorrow's scientist demon-strated their skills and proved their capacity. The visitors were amazed with tens of different experiments and shows as wel l as the wel l-organized boards. This was a successful outcome of student-teacher cooperation and the fruits of hard and disciplined work.

In addition, Mr. Mustafa Dur, our chemistry teacher admitted that this year Science Fair was very good compared to last year. After the chemistry department, we think that we did a wonderful job with the help of our students. If I say the chemistry section was the most interesting part of the fair, I think I wouldn't be exagger-ating. For each and every year, we are getting more experienced therefore, next year we hope that we wi l l ra ise the level and prepare another nice fair for the audience. To sum up, I congratu-late every teacher and student for their hard work on the fair. It was a wonderful time for all of us.

Mr. Murat Tutumlu himself also remarked that “This year is better than last year. Though the system was the same it was another success of our school. Actually, all the projects were very interesting and every table had a lot of visitors, however it was shown that some of physics and chemistry tables were the most crowded.”

In conc lus ion, our 2008 Science Fair was accomplished very smoothly with the help of Mr. Mura t Tu tumlu and Mr E l . S o p h e a a l o n g w i t h o t h e r teachers. And special thanks to all the subject teachers that helped each student managed their projects very well. Afterward all the work that has been done, we are so grateful because we have received many positive comments. We welcomed to receive all of the feedback. ACTIVITY

Zaman International school was opened in 1997. The school was located in #31, st 71, sangkat Boeung Keng Kong 1, khan Chamkarmon, Phnom Penh. The school started with only 2 students. After many years of operating in Cambodia, Zaman international School has increased its enrolment of students amazingly. From Year to year, hundred of students register with ZIS. With the support of students families, our school opened the new campus in January 2006 with many honorable guests. The new building is located at #2843, st 3, sangkat Tonle Basak, khan Chamkarmon.

Nowadays, ZIS has 682 students (330 girls and 352 boys), and 66 teachers (22 part-time teachers, 20 full-time teachers and 14 club teachers). Because of the teachers and students, a huge family of Zaman International School was formed. The students are very close to each other and they spend most of their time together, and they study together, enjoy their lunch together, and share their feelings and secrets together, and many more things. Not only we have happy times, but we also have had some tough times with each other. We seem like siblings more than friends. Not only between students and student but also between students and teachers, they communicate very well. Teachers provided knowledge as much as they can to the students, and they take care of them very well. They teach us how to live independently and behave well etc. They seem like the students' parents or guides, that's why the students called them The Second Parents.

Students initially don't notice that ZIS formed a family like this, and they didn't know how deep and strong this family is. One day, they will learn it and know how much value this family has. Even when students have left or graduated, they are still Zaman's family. By the amount of the new students entering each year, graduated students and the 682 students this year, Zaman's family will become larger and larger. One day, Zaman's family will become the largest family in Asia with a state motto

“ YOU'RE GOING TO REACH THE TOP WITH US ”.

Staying 9 hours as a community.Do you think we seem like a huge family

in this society?

A true friend is hard to findIs always in the mind

Is one of a kind.A true friend is someone like youThat I found inside this school.

In the performance, many shows were played, such as Trad i t iona l Fash ion Show, Songs, Slide Shows, and Drama. First, our 2 presenters greeted the guest and started singing the national anthem. Then, a group of students sang a Khmer song which was written by His Majesty King NORODOM SIHAKNOUK. After that, we started our Fashion Show which described about the color of the day. Along with this fashion show, our presenters a l s o e x p l a i n e d a b o u t t h e meaning of the color of each day in Khmer and English to the guests. “Traditional programs had passed, it was time to change our program into modern programs.” t h i s w a s w h a t o n e o f t h e presenter said. Turkish and English songs were sung. 2 slide shows which were made by 11F were played. One of them was about 11-F's family and other was about our 11f's members. Drama role was about Zaman's student's life, but it was a funny drama. Not only these programs were showed, but also surprising and enjoyable games were also performed. At that time, every guest was very excited. Before the end of the performance, the whole 11F class sang 2 songs, first was about parents and the other song was about 11F class which called as “11F Relation-ship”, these songs were written by 11F. At the end of perfor-mance, there were also snacks and drinks for the entire guests who came.

F ina l ly, our per formance finished successfully. We would like to say thanks to Zaman International School, which gave 11F an opportunity to make this class day up. But also special thanks to our homeroom teacher and students in girl-side and teachers who cooperated with 11F about this class day. Written by Pichny

On the 1st of March 2008, there was a performance which is performed by 11f. This perfor-mance is called as 11F's Class Day. This performance was started from 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm and it took place at ZIS confer-ence hall. In that occasion we

invited all of 11F's parents and all the teachers who teach us but we sold the tickets for students in girl side. The prize of each ticket was 1$. We had planned to sell the t icket to al l of the gir l -s ide students in ZIS but unfortunately the seats were not enough for all

the students in girl side, so we just sold approximately 80 tickets. For this occasion, we nearly had 10 days to practice before the per formance. I t seemed to be so short for us but we tried our best for our class day.
