Officer Mark Wardian made con-
tact with a home owner concern-
ing the burglary of his home. Un-
known persons broke into the
home and stole paint, tools, a
vacuum and other remodeling
supplies. Officer Wardian ac-
quired the necessary information
and completed a burglary report.
As part of his investigation he
canvassed the neighborhood and
looked for the stolen items.
Officer Wardian located some of
the victim's stolen property in an
alley in the neighborhood and
returned the property. The home
owner wrote a letter to the Phoe-
nix Police Department regarding
this incident and his contact with
the officer. He was quite thankful
that Officer Wardian found some
of his property, saving him the
expense of replacing the stolen
items. Most importantly, he did
not expect this level of police
service from Officer Wardian or
the Phoenix Police Department.
In response to this positive police
contact, he wrote the attached
letter to commend the officer.
I am writing to commend Officer
Wardian for the handling of my
Burglary loss. After investigating
my loss, he drove through the
alleys in my neighborhood look-
ing for my lost items. He returned
to my home within a few minutes
with several items, including the
most valuable, saving me the
expense of repurchasing them. I
did not expect the follow up Of-
ficer Wardian gave and want to
thank him and the Phoenix Police
Department for the service.
Caring Officers: by Sgt. Rodrigo Hernandez
Partnerships: Precinct Schools, and Target Corp.
Shop with a Cop
The Phoenix Police Department in
partnership with Target, Phoenix
Law Enforcement Association
(PLEA), and other generous dona-
tors, enabled 92 children to par-
ticipate in the annual Shop with a
Cop program.
Each “shopper” was provided a
breakfast prepared by the Kiwa-
nis Club. Then, they had the op-
portunity to visit with Santa. After
this, they were paired with an
officer and given $150 to pur-
chase clothing and toys for
Christmas.
Officers are volunteers from the
School Resource and Community
Action Squads. The officers who
participate have often times been
a “shoperone” in the past and
look forward to helping out each
year.
The time spent shopping allows
the officer and child to interact
and get to know each other.
Some of these children have
never had positive interaction
with police before, so this pro-
gram affords them the oppor-
tunity to build trust and confi-
dence in law enforcement
officers.
Page 2
Thank you for all of those that collected or made donations for the shoppers and made availa-
ble funds to add to the number of children making it a very successful occasion. In addition to
the donations were the vendors and supply companies that in some cases provided services at
no charge so that the funds went directly to the children. Also thank you to all those
that worked so hard to provide a positive
experience for all involved.

The annual Citywide Civilian Coordinator Christmas dessert
get together was again a great time of planning, chatting
discussing, mingling, and of course lots of calories! Bringing
the citywide neighborhood leaders together with City Coun-
cil members, Command Staff and Resource Officers is al-
ways a good time to discuss neighborhood issues.

Holiday Candle Safety
A Candle Meant To
Decorate . . .
Can Devastate!
Recent trends in-
volving the decora-
tion of candles as
well as decorating
with candles could
bring disaster to your home. While they can
enhance the mood and bring warmth to a
room, candles must be used properly to pre-
vent a fire in your home.
Make sure that candles are secured in stable
non-flammable holders, such as
metal, ceramic, or glass. Anything
made of wood or decorated with
dried materials or fabric is asking
for trouble. A candle should never
be used without some sort of hold-
er; otherwise, it can burn down to
the surface on which it stands.
Keep candles away from flammable
materials including papers, towels,
and silk and dried flower arrange-
ments. Keep in mind that curtains
can drift across a candle flame and
ignite.
Whenever children are in your
home, keep candles and matches
out of their reach. Never leave a
child unsupervised in a room with a
lighted candle.
Don't leave any candle unattended.
If you must leave the room, extin-
guish all candles; that way, you'll be
saving them for the times you will
be there to enjoy them!
The BEST way to fight fires is
to prevent them from starting
in the first place!

Officer Luz Fernandez Goes Over The Edge for Special Olympics
Every year Special Olympics Arizona sponsors the fund-
raising event. It takes $1000 to support two athletes for
an entire year at Special Olympics and that’s the amount
each Over The Edge participant must raise. This year,
our own Officer Luz Fernandez was among three
phoenix Police Department participants. The
Plunge started very early on a blistering cold over
cast morning at the City scape building down
town Phoenix. The cold wind did not deter the
exuberant repellers or the crowd that came out to
cheer then “down”. This is just one of the numer-
ous fund raising event all through the year put on
by Special Olympics. The up and coming, very
visible Torch Run is another event and one that is
supported by Police Departments world wide .
