Every Precinct hosts in turn the Block Watch Advisory Board monthly meetings and Cactus Park Precinct hosted

March 27th at Helen Drake Senior Center. Candice Fremouw opened up and acted as MC as she introduced and read

the Caring Community Award nominees. The following pages are the names and some photos of those awards.

Commander Piña was the guest speaker and answered questions on the Three Thirteens pilot program and the ongoing

programs that impact the community in Cactus Park Precinct area. Detective Tim Reese and Detective Chuck Miller

from the Graffiti Unit reported on the issues surrounding gang graffiti and gave statistics indicating this involved far

greater crime then just graffiti . Officer Epperson débuted the video of the Communication training group and

introduced the style of training videos he plans on completing this year to include: “Day in the Life of a Beat Cop”;

“Graffiti– The Gateway Crime” and “Liability Issues as they Pertain to Phoenix Neighborhood Patrol”.

Deanna Bailey

When Deanna bought Payne and Morrison Florists, her community commitment blossomed. She weekly donates

a flower bouquet for the Palo Verde School office and two flowers for outstanding teachers. Last spring their

special needs classes came weekly to learn basic social skills. She donated the balloon arches for the Helen

Drake Senior Center’s Grand Opening Celebration. Beverly Harvey on behalf of United Neighbors Association

nominated and the Phoenix Block Watch Advisory Board is proud to present this Caring Community Award to

Deanna Bailey.

Rob Buss and Trinity Bible Church Volunteers

Come rain or shine, cold or scorching heat, this group of volunteers graciously devotes personal time once a

month to distribute food to community members in need. Without questions asked or request made of the

recipients, Rob and his volunteers give to the community with free spirits and smiles on their faces. Thank You

for being a part of our community! Robin Mofford nominated and the Phoenix Block Watch Advisory Board is

proud to present this Caring Community Award to Rob Buss and Trinity Bible Church Volunteers.

Daniel J. Cronin

Dan has done the bulk of graffiti cover-up for the last 4 years. He took it upon himself to get signatures of

property owners so that he can cover the violations as soon as painted. Also he inspects the “Neighborhood

Block Watch” signs and makes necessary repairs. Frank Steinmetz nominated and the Phoenix Block Watch

Advisory Board is proud to present this Caring Community Award to Dan Cronin.

Frank Devine and Gerold Keller

Frank and Gerold are active, dedicated PNP patrollers for the Alta Vista Neighborhood. They patrol on a weekly

basis. Being out in the community, he provides a visual presence which helps promote safety and crime preven-

tion. On behalf of the Alta Vista Neighborhood – Thank You for your involvement, your time and dedication to

the community. Sherry Dudek nominated and the Phoenix Block Watch Advisory Board is proud to present this

Caring Community Award to Frank and Gerold.

Lawrrie Fitzhugh

Lawrrie has been a community leader in her area for many years. Her tenacity to community is unmatched. She

helps her neighbors and other community groups by informing them through email and attending meetings on

important issues. Lawrrie is well versed in liquor laws and zoning issues and uses that knowledge to assist the

neighborhood. Officer Joe Trujillo nominated and the Phoenix Block Watch Advisory Board is proud to present

this Caring Community Award to Lawrrie .

Patsy Horton

Patsy recognized a need to help organize and bring together her neighbors

to address a variety of issues. She stepped up and took on the contact and

leadership roll of forming the new “Git ‘Er Done Block Watch”. Thank

you for caring and encouraging others to be involved. Cactus Park Community Alliance nominated and the Phoenix

Block Watch Advisory Board is proud to present this Caring Community Award to Patsy Horton.

Herman Kando

Herman has been very generous and accommodating with scheduling meetings for neighborhood Block Watch Groups

and Good Neighbor Programs at both the American Royal Palace and American Banquet Center. We are sincerely

grateful for his support and contributions as a community business partner. Candice Fremouw nominated and the

Phoenix Block Watch Advisory Board is proud to present this Caring Community Award to Herman.

Ben Kugler

Ben has done an outstanding job of caring for his community. Although he is no longer the president of Manzanita

Block Watch, he maintains a strong bond with the community members and the Phoenix Police Department. He

continues regular patrols as a member of PNP. He educates on proper reporting procedures and protocol and guides

to the proper department based on the nature of the complaint and steps forward as a voice for those who are afraid or

unwilling to contact the police or take action. Ben is able to deescalate situations in an articulate non-confrontational

and non-threatening manner. Officer Karen Anderson nominated and the Phoenix Block Watch Advisory Board is proud

to present this Caring Community Award to Ben.

Frank Martinez

Frank Martinez of the Cox Meadows Block Watch has organized several successful projects, including; a wash cleanup,

Certificates of Appreciation for local volunteers and coordinated gifts and food cards being delivered to a need family

at Christmastime. He is a prime example of volunteers who take pride in their community. Officer Karen Freund

nominated and the Phoenix Block Watch Advisory Board is proud to present this Caring Community Award to Frank.

Leslie Mills

Mrs. Mills is amazing! She knows nearly every child by name and their likes and interests in reading choices. Her

creativity subtly inspires the elementary school students how to use research materials and the Dewey Decimal system.

Every Student is encouraged to choose both a fiction and a nonfiction book. She works tirelessly and with limited

financial resources but finds a way to implement and motivate reading activities. Candice Fremouw nominated and the

Phoenix Block Watch Advisory Board is proud to present this Caring Community Award to Leslie .

Robin Mofford

As a community leader for many years, Robin is always ready to share experience, ideas and time to help others. She is

an active member of Phoenix Neighborhood Patrol, chairperson of CPCA and works in the community as part of Rancho

Encanto Block Watch. Thank You for your dedication to promoting crime prevention and helping others. Sherry Dudek

nominated and the Phoenix Block Watch Advisory Board is proud to present this Caring Community Award to Robin.

Frank and Joyce Steinmetz

Frank and Joyce are very committed to the Cactus Wren Neighborhood. They have participated in nearly every

sign sweep and still find time to pick up signs on their own. Frank and Joyce participate in other areas assisting

with VIN etchings and wash cleanup. They are always on time, well prepared and ready to work. They are

important members of our community and excellent partners with the Phoenix Police Department. Thank You

for your commitment and all your hard work. Officer Wade Niver nominated and the Phoenix Block Watch

Advisory Board is proud to present this Caring Community Award to Frank and Joyce.

Elizabeth Sugges

As an Assistant City Prosecutor assigned to Cactus Park Precinct, Liz has made herself available to many

communities to speak at meetings addressing special issues. She teamed up with the 91 Area CAO’s and helped

develop a program to address Street Crime Recidivists which enhances prosecution of the offenders. Thank you

Liz for your work and support. Cactus Park Community Alliance nominated and the Phoenix Block Watch

Advisory Board is proud to present this Caring Community Award to Liz.

Maria Uhing

Maria worked as a Neighborhood Inspector, not just fulfilling her job but taking an involved proactive roll

with the various communities assigned to her. Now with Community Prosecution, she has continued to help us

understand how to work within the system to make changes that benefit all. Thank You for your dedication

this Caring Community Award to Maria.

Barb and Dan George

Dan has been editor of the Block Watch newsletter for over 9 years and assists Dan Cronin with Graffiti

cover-up. Barb has handled all communications with guest speakers, GAIN event sponsors and specialty

articles for the newsletter. They both assist with Precinct Sign Cleanup Frank Steinmetz nominated and the

Phoenix Block Watch Advisory Board is proud to present this Caring Community Award to Barb and Dan.

Dan Glauber

Dan is a great organizer and motivator. He not only coordinates his Block Watch meetings for the GAIN and

local events, but also the surrounding businesses and school community. Dan’s group formed a partnership with

the postal carrier to report graffiti so it can be removed in a timely manner. Officer Karen Freund nominated

and the Phoenix Block Watch Advisory Board is proud to present this Caring Community Award to Dan.


6 2012 Special Olympics Torch Run

27th law Enforcement Torch Run Cactus Park Precinct

From Wittman to surprise!

Under the organization skills of Detective Jeannie Custer of the

Community Relations Bureau, 27 Phoenix Police Department

employees escorted the “Flame of Hope” from the Maricopa County

Sheriff’s Deputies to the Surprise Police Department as the annual

Law Enforcement Torch Run seeks to raise funds for the Special

Olympics that hold the opening ceremony in Tempe.

The “leg” of the run is 11.5 miles and is the longest leg in the valley.

Those who participated ended in good spirits and a little short of

breath but proud that they supported such a worthy cause.

Afterwards the “runners” were treated to a Cactus Park Precinct

Bar-B-Que. Burgers and dogs were hot and ready for a hungry bunch.

Raising Canes Chicken Fingers provided a Sockeye Tailgate in honor

of the runners as well. The Communication Committee kicked off the

celebration with the new grill purchased with money from the Cactus

Park Precinct Cantina.

For three days (to accommodate both shifts and all squads) the grill

was sizzling’ up grub. Looks like this could be an annual thing as

well. Thanks to the following employees for representing Cactus Park

Precinct:

Commander Piña, Sgt. Winchester, Karen Freund, Angela

McCasland, Dina Burk, Brandon Epperson, Gerry Lee, James

McDonough, and Leonel Valle.

2012 Annual Phoenix Neighborhood Recognition Event

The Annual Phoenix Neighborhood Patrol recognition “picnic” was held at the

North Hills Church at 15025 N 19th av. and it is estimated over 225 folks attended

and dined from food catered by Hammered Hog of Phoenix. Members of the

Command Staff recognized certain members and gave their appreciation to the

participating members for their spectacular service volunteering their time and

effort for the neighborhood crime fighting program.

Donations of all kinds were raffled off to the members and the entire “banquet”

was a success. It is rumored that the event will be at the same location since the

staff at the North Hills Church were so accommodating. Get those logs into the

coordinators and lets see if we can out do last year!

Sometimes even retired “police personnel” need a hand. Tex a retired Tempe Police

Equine now residing in the Sunburst Farms neighborhood, went for a stroll. Tex is

a well trained “officer” and is used to being directed to where he is needed. Today,

however Tex was playing the role of escapee and had managed to get out of his corral.

He was found grazing along side the road not far from a major street. Officer Dave

Chambers, the CAO for the area, spotted Tex and after

some slight coaxing and a borrowed lead, Tex was

returned home safely.

Some lessons were learned by this great escape:

1. The cost to help was free and Dan the owner was very

appreciative.

2. Even retired officers need a hand (or hoof) now and

then.

3. Tex's new owner was found easily because contact

information was readily available.

4. Big hearts come in many shapes and sizes. Tex, a retired Tempe Police Equine.

Classic!

Coffee with a Cop at JB’s. It’s back in the line-up.

April’s Coffee with a Cop was at JB’s and was a

small but enjoyable group, JB’s has been added to

the rotating list of restaurants and we will be look-

ing forward to meeting there again. It’s close

enough to some, they actually walked. Come join

us in June ( the first Wednesday of every month) at

Zax Café at 2308 W Northern.

Thank you again very much for having Commander Piña come to Manzanita Elementary School today to read to the children of Head Start! We are very thankful and grateful that the Commander took time out of his busy schedule to spend time reading and answering questions. The children were real excited to see a "real policeman" they said and were happy to sing a song for him, too. Thank you so much!
