Welcome to theNovember edition of your local Romsey and Wellow Gazette community magazine. The clocks have now gone back but as I am writing this welcome letter we are enjoying a really mild spell. I cannot bring myself to change my wardrobe as then I have accepted that the cold weather and winter are upon me.

November has two significant dates; 5th is Bonfire Night – please always remember the elderly and animals; and then the 11th which is Remembrance Day, a very poignant date on our calendar.

There are lots of interesting articles in this issue, and we cannot help but notice that we are galloping at a fast pace towards Christmas. There are lots of shops in Romsey that offer ideas for Christmas shopping. Every year I say I am going to start my shopping in September. Well it’s been and gone and did I make a start, but somehow I just cannot get into the swing of Christmas when the sun is shining and it’s warm.

Please continue to send in your articles for the Community News pages.

I just remains for me to say have a good November take care in all you do.

Now might be a good time to update your website design

Here are some questions to help you decide if it’s time to update your Website design.

Does it function properly on mobile devices? Is the menu usable on a small screen? Is the text readable? Do the forms work? If you can’t answer yes (or you have no idea) it’s time to act. Technically, is it a Responsive design? For the last 3 years Google has penalised sites that are not responsive.

Does it have functioning social media links? Social media accounts are a great way to market your business. Are you using Facebook, Twitter and Google Plus to connect with your customers? A good web marketing strategy integrates all your online content by linking to it on your main website.

Search engines aren’t finding it? The ‘Holy Grail’ for website designers and their clients is for their website to be at the top of the first page of Google, or at least on the first page when people search for their product or service. Sadly, it is now impossible to be first, and extremely difficult to be on the first page. Why? Because Google now places paid ads at the top and bottom with a ‘Google Places’ map showing local businesses in the middle. Good

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is mandatory if you are going to have any chance of being found on search engines. This must be done by a professional such as ourselves. Do not trust anyone who suggests they can place you top of Google’s first page.

Is your Website secure? A website is secure if the main address is prefixed by https://. The ‘s’ means secure. As from now Google is starting to advise users that their connection is not secure if they visit a website requiring input which does not include the ‘s’. Your visitors are likely to be confused by such a message. Also, Google is starting to display secure sites above ‘unsecure’ sites. To make websites secure requires regular payment for a renewable certificate that guarantees this security. This is best integrated into your site by a professional.

The new club year for Viewfinders of Romsey Camera Club has got off to a busy start, with two competitions in the first month.

Firstly there was the Print of the Year competition and in the advanced category the trophy went to ‘Observing the Desert Sunset’ by Stuart Bennett. The judge, Giles Barkley, said the image was well taken and he liked the recessive lighting. Second place went to Stephen Cooper for ‘Feldkirch, Austria, from the Castle’ and third place went to Stuart Bennett for ‘The Road’. Seals of Merit were awarded to Stuart, Margaret Cooper, Andrew Greenwood, Terry Jamieson and Roy Lambeth. In the primary category, Peter Wood’s image of Polperro in Cornwall was awarded first prize; the judge said he liked the finish that Peter had applied. Angela Lobley was awarded second place for ‘Smoke Break’ as well as third place for ‘Tired Climbers on Mont Blanc’. During a very successful evening, Angela was also awarded three Seals of Merit for other images; Peter also received a Seal of Merit and the fifth was awarded to Harry Borgerson.

The second competition was the Project Digital Image (PDI) of the Year trophy, judged by Paul Thackeray. In the primary category Angela Lobley had another very successful evening: her images ‘Hummingbird Hawk Moth’ (which the judged described as stunning), ‘Skynet’ and ‘Orchid’ won first, second and third places

respectively. Two Seals of Merit were awarded to Philip Clewer and other Seals of Merit were awarded to Chris Wenman and to Mike Wenman. In the advanced category the judge eventually chose ‘Anxious to Ride the Waves’ by Heath Gough-Holt for first prize.

New Pottery OpensPoppies Pottery spun its potters wheels this week as it opened for business. A fully equipped new pottery situated at Choice Plants at Timsbury near Romsey, the pottery offers workshops and group opportunities to create with clay whether on a potters wheel or hand building under the supervision of an expert potter.

“The pottery has started well, we are offering project focused workshops throughout the week for children, adults and groups. It’s a chance to be creative and learn new skills and experience the pleasure of working with clay,” said Maisie Jones the resident Potter. “There are fewer opportunities these days to experience the pleasure of pottery and this new facility is a real gain for the area. I hope to meet lots of children and adults really enjoying their time here finding how creative they can be. It’s just a lot of fun”.

Poppies Pottery is the latest enterprise to open at Choice Plants, joining a busy craft centre, cafe and homemade ice cream parlour.

There is a full programme of workshops and group bookings for adults and children at www.choiceplants.co.uk or telephone the pottery and craft centre 01794 368895 for details.

Paul said he loved the simplicity and pastel shades of the image. Heath also received a Seal of Merit for another of her images. Second place went to ‘The Exhibit’ by Malcolm Richardson and third place to ‘Causeway’ by Gerald Ponting. Two Seals of Merit were awarded to Julie Darby and to Steve Lobley and other Seals of Merit were awarded to Lynn Lambeth and Ian Whatmore.

Viewfinders meets most Tuesdays at the Jubilee Hall, New Road, Timsbury and new members, regardless of photographic experience, are always welcome. For more information, visit the club’s website at www.viewfinderscameraclub.org.uk or e-mail [email protected].

Charity Fundraising Concert

A Feast of Flutes Charity Concert, hosted by local flute trio, Flute Roots, raised £700 for Pancreatic Cancer UK on Sunday at Romsey’s Lantern Theatre. The concert was attended by over 100 people and included a great variety of music, from jazz to romantic to contemporary, even including some audience participation.

The inspiration for putting on this concert came from Flute Roots’ former flute teacher, Robin Soldan, who is trekking through the Grand Canyon in October to raise funds for Pancreatic Cancer UK in memory of his late partner, Marjorie. Carrie Hensel, event organiser said, “Robin is recognised nationally and internationally as a top flautist, quality teacher and author of books for aspiring flautists. His students in Hampshire in the 1980s and 1990s were most fortunate to have benefitted from his teaching. Many of these attended on Sunday and it was lovely to see and hear them all playing in the concert together once again. The day was real fun, with flute choirs coming together performing to such a high standard in the concert.”

The next Hampshire Flute Day will be on Saturday 25 November. More details available from www.fluteday.co.uk.

Community NewsRichard Rowles of Phoenix Transconnect, and Gold Sponsor of The Brenda Locke Award for Women in Business, said of the Awards: "My congratulations to all 6 winners of the Test Valley Business Awards 2017. Each is a credit to local business, and to the Test Valley! Joining the Awards this year as a Gold Sponsor has been a valuable experience, and it was a pleasure to be involved."

As well as celebrating local business achievements, every year, the Awards also recognises the importance of supporting local causes and charitable organisations. This year, choosing The Museum of Army Flying as charity of the year, attendees were given the chance to hear more about the Museum’s current programme ‘Project Eagle’, whilst raising over £800 for this worthy cause.

Now in its 13th year, the Test Valley Business Awards – run by a steering group of volunteers – has become a well-established platform to promote businesses excellence and especially to shine a light on the many new and small innovative businesses operating out of sight. It is a great way to enable smaller enterprises to gain the recognition and exposure to grow.

Information about the night; including winners, and photos of the event, can be found on the Test Valley Business Awards website, at: www.tvbawards.org.uk.

1st Birthday CelebrationsGreenbuttercup CIC, in conjunction with Romsey Dementia Action Group (ROMDAG), have now been running their ‘Arts & Crafts’ sessions for people living with Dementia and their carers for one year. The sessions were first promoted at Demfest last September and they began shortly afterwards. What started as a trial, has now become a regular event. Participants have enjoyed trying out a wide range of crafts throughout the year, including: papercraft, painting, printing, clay, glass painting, weaving, card-making and mosaics. They have had their work displayed at Romsey’s

‘Inside Out Art Trail’ and in the Abbey United Reformed Church during Romsey Festival, and their painted glass tealight holders were sold in aid of funds at a Charities Fair earlier this year.

The importance of this venture has been acknowledged by many, and financial support for the last year has come from: Test Valley Arts Foundation; Romsey Town Council; Romsey, Chandler’s Ford & District Round Table; and private donations – for which we are very thankful. Participants are

charged £3 per person to attend, but it will be necessary to continue to fundraise in order to ensure these sessions continue.

Members of Greenbuttercup CIC and group regulars were joined on Friday, October 6th by some distinguished guests to help them celebrate the group’s first birthday.

The Mayor of Test Valley Cllr Carl Borg-Neal and his Mayoress Mrs Maria Neal; the Deputy Mayor of Romsey Cllr Dorothy Baverstock; the Chair and Vice-Chair of RAODS (Romsey Amateur Operatic & Dramatic Society) Neil Gwynne and Barry Young; Andover MIND’s new Dementia Adviser for Romsey Jo Frost; ROMDAG’s Ian Bradford; and the Former Mayor of Romsey Cllr John Parker and his wife Mrs Tessa Parker, were welcomed with coffee and cake. They were thanked for their support of ROMDAG’s activities, and especially in helping to make the ‘Arts & Crafts’ sessions a success. The guests were then invited to see what the group were making, and some even joined in! As it was October, the group were enjoying themselves making Halloween Masks – both beautiful and frightful - and some of the creations you certainly wouldn’t have wanted to meet on a dark night!

The ‘Arts & Crafts’ fun sessions usually take place on the first Friday of the month from 10.30am to 12.30pm in the Green Room at the Plaza Theatre in Romsey (by kind permission

No experience is necessary, and all tuition and materials are provided along with drinks and biscuits. At each session, there is a ‘have-a-go’ session, and the programme for the final two sessions of the year is as follows:

Friday, November 3rd – Making Collages

Friday, December 15th – Christmas Crafts and Mince Pies (please note the date)

If you know someone who may enjoy this, they are welcome to come along and try us out for free. There is parking behind the theatre, and entry is by the side door up the accessible ramp.

Local solicitor defends lasting powers of attorneyLocal solicitor Lindsay Taylor from Bells Solicitors based in Romsey has defended lasting powers of attorney (LPA) after Denzil Lush, the former Senior Judge of the Court of Protection, warned they may leave elderly people open to abuse.

An LPA is a powerful legal document that allows a person to appoint trusted individuals to make important decisions about care and finances on their behalf, in the event of a loss of mental capacity through an accident or illness such as dementia.

In the foreword to a new book on the subject, Mr Lush raised concerns about the “lack of transparency” in how appointed attorneys manage older people’s finances. The former judge went on to criticise the Ministry of Justice as being “disingenuous” in its promotion of the legal document.

However, Lindsay Taylor – a member of national organisation Solicitors for the Elderly – said LPAs are effective safeguards when created responsibly: “Senior Judge Lush’s comments have given rise to fears that LPAs are a direct avenue for financial abuse. However, his comments must be put into context, as his 20-year career at the Court of Protection will have presented him with the very worst cases of financial abuse.

“An LPA can be a positive and effective legal tool, which ensures your wishes are respected should you

ever lose capacity. Senior Judge Lush’s comments should highlight the clear need for professional advice when considering powerful legal documents of this nature.”

Top tips on drafting a lasting power of attorney• Plan early whilst you have capacity • Choose your attorneys carefully • Consider appointing a professional • Think about the different circumstances that may

arise• Address the difficult questions • Seek professional advice • Keep your plans current

RESPECT ON THE ROAD Role modelling safe travel to every game

15 – 24 year olds tragically represent the highest number of driver/passenger fatalities on our roads, with Road Traffic Collisions being the highest non-illness killer of young people. This is why the Hampshire FA is working with Project Pictogram to promote safer road use. Just as weekly coaching gives our young players the correct attitude and skills to play football, a club’s culture around safe travel can provide an invaluable role model.Project Pictogram, which is endorsed by all leading Road Safety Organisations, promotes ‘3 Simple Habits’:

Fatal Five 300x60mm Mono.indd 1 17/12/2015 15:26

1. Keep SPEED Safe & Legal Braking distances increase massively with just a small increase in speed; as does impact energy in the event of a collision. As an experienced driver you may be able to drive ‘fast’ - the 17 year old newly qualified driver who tries to emulate the driving you have role modelled may not. Inappropriate speed is one of the commonly reoccurring ‘Fatal

Four’ factors in 15 – 24 year old road fatalities and serious life changing injury collisions.

2. Keep your DISTANCE Many matches require early morning starts when roads are often cold or wet. Braking distances increase massively on cold (below +7 degrees C) or wet roads, which is why the Highway Code’s Rule 126 recommends doubling the following distance of, “Only a fool breaks the 2 second rule”. Tail gating is an aggressive driving trait which is highly distracting and shows no respect for other road users. Rear-end-shunts are the most common type of collision due to this poor driving technique. Travelling in convoy has been shown to increase the risk of collision so it is usually best to follow your own sat nav to the game.

3. Keep Eyes-on-the-Road (avoid Driver Distractions) Driver Distractions are one of the largest contributing factors to RTCs. This is an area where good role modelling can help prepare young players to be safe passengers and safe drivers long before they are old enough to drive. It can also help them to be safer pedestrians and cyclists too.

driving is illegal, and hands-free calling has also been shown to be a significant driver distraction. 5 seconds is the average time your eyes are off the road when texting, at 55mph that’s the length of a football pitch! Planning ahead and making your calls and arrangements in advance avoids the need to use your phone while driving. Ask a passenger to make the call if it is essential.

It is illegal to Smoke in a vehicle with anyone under the age of 18, to protect children and young people from the dangers of second-hand passive smoking. Smoking and e-cigarette Vaping at the wheel also poses an immediate danger to health in the form of Distracted Driving, removing eyes and mind from the road, and hands from the wheel. Similarly, drinking Coffee, etc, at the wheel is also highly distracting, occupying eyes, hands and mind. Spilling hot coffee or dropping a

cigarette into your lap is clearly going to impact your ability to drive safely! While coffee drinking at the wheel has become common place in the UK, make no mistake, it is highly dangerous. An inexperienced 17 year old driver trying to multi-task at the wheel is destined to end in a wholly avoidable tragedy.

Passenger Behaviour can also be highly distracting to a driver. If a ‘rowdy celebration’ of success becomes the in-car tradition on the way home from a game, this ritual will be continued when players turn 17 and start transporting their 15/16 year old team mates independently. Help young players understand the vital role they play as passengers in a car’s safety by not distracting their driver.

Role modelling safe driver/passenger behaviours is one of the best things coaches and supporter transporters can do each week to help prepare young

players for the highest risk phase of their driving lives: 15 – 24 years old.

Seat Belts of the correct type for the young person’s age and height are a legal requirement and essential to safe travel. The law requires all children travelling in the front or rear seat of any car, van, or goods vehicle to use the correct child seat until they are either 135cm in height or 12 years old (whichever they reach first). After this they must use an adult seat belt. NEVER transport anyone without a seat belt, even for the shortest distances – the consequences in a collision are horrific.

Alcohol & Drugs have no place on the touch-line or when driving. The culture a club sets around this area is key to forming the attitudes young players hold when they become 18 – a time when both alcohol and driving are new to them.

‘PROJECT PICTOGRAM’Driving Safer Roads

If Club House celebrations/socials are planned for older players make sure they understand the importance of safe travel plans before the event: nominated driver, taxi, etc. Don’t turn a blind eye to drink/drug driving, have the conversation or take the intervention before a tragedy occurs. Also remember that drunk passengers can be highly distracting to a driver.

With early morning starts for many games, ‘The Morning After’ Drink Driving is a real risk. As a rough guide, a healthy body takes one hour to process one unit of alcohol. A pint of beer, double measure spirit (50ml), or large glass of wine (250ml) will all typically have around 2.5 units of alcohol. Plan accordingly if you are drinking the night before. Personal breath test analysers are available to enable you to check.

STRONG by Zumba.com

Bonfire Night BarbecueA barbecue, on bonfire night, I’m sure it will be great,

My husband is in charge and he’s invited his best mate, He’s bought sausages and fillet steak; he only buys the best, He’s bought a plastic apron; he now sports a pair of breasts,

Fifty cans of lager are all piled up on the side, He’s swigging one already, and his grin is big and wide, He wanders to the garden, all decked out in new attire,

He rubs his hands with glee “Now...time to light this little fire,” Fifteen minutes later, and I’m totally amazed,

It’s taken twenty firemen to douse out our garden blaze, And I’m viewing, somewhat differently, the husband I adore,

His eyebrows are all singed; his breasts have melted to the floor, He holds his fork defensively; convinced he’ll shift the blame, “It’s not my fault at all; the wind took hold of all the flames,”

But the firemen are chatting; their words reach me, crisp and clear, “What idiot poured this petrol on? You get ‘em every year!”

Romsey Rugby ClubRomsey Rugby Club did the town proud by responding to the season’s opening weekend loss to Locksheath with an emphatic win over title rivals Fawley.

Buoyed by their own victory in week one of the Hampshire 2 season, the visitors came to Romsey with ambition and confidence and looking to pick a fight.

“The lads trained well during the week,” remarks the club captain, Dan Penn Newman. “The guys took the loss to Locksheath on the chin and there was a real purpose at the Thursday night training session and this followed seamlessly through to the performance on Saturday.”

This positive attitude lead to positive play and the Romsey forward pack put their Fawley counterparts under massive pressure which resulted in early tries for Alex Hill and a first Dan Penn Newman.

Notable performances from Aaron Gallagher, Matt Easton and veteran war horse Ian Thomas in the front row gave Romsey a rock steady base to work from.

Two further tries came from Captain Dan, Henry Ashton scored a brace whilst PJ Bowden and Rob Heighway both scored late on to seal the 54 v 18 victory.

Romsey are a family friendly club and are always on the lookout for new supporters and players of any standard. If you are interested in playing or supporting your local club then please feel free to pop down to the club based at Romsey Rapids on Thursday nights from 7pm and Saturdays from 14.30 on home games. An award winning Lingerie Department with a personal fitting service. This department also has a selection of swimwear and nightwear.

Bradbeers’ Ladies’ and Men’s Departments have something for every age group.

A wedding outfit from Jacques Vert or Phase Eight and then a hat or fascinator, and to finish off the outfit with shoes and bag. Which brings me onto the shoe department; Gabor, Van Dal, Moda in Pelle and many more.

At Bradbeers you can buy everything you need.

It is always worth looking in the store before going into town as you will be surprised just how much there is available to you. Bradbeers offer great customer service which makes you feel that little bit extra special… and we all need that at sometime in our lives.

Bradbeers have special offers all year, not just at sale times.

I always enjoy shopping in Bradbeers and have never been disappointed with any item I have ever purchased, and the very rare occasion that I have needed to exchange my purchase it has never been a problem with either a straight exchange or a refund.

Why not take a trip to Bradbeers of Romsey and have a good look round. If you have never been before, take my word for it, you will not be disappointed. Their prices represent very good value for money and are equivalent to major high street prices.

Bradbeers also have a Hair Salon and a Beauty Studio.

There are two very comfortable restaurants for either a hot meal, a sandwich or a naughty cake with tea or coffee, and somewhere nice to sit and relax and read the various newspapers which are supplied for their customers.

Bradbeers have been trading since 1837 – that’s 180 years! Bradbeers is now a more exciting store.

This month’s walk returns to the core of the Test Valley as is starts from The Malthouse, Stockbridge Road,

Timsbury, SO51 0NG (photo 1), where there is ample parking and a warm welcome at the finish of the outing.

The distance of this walk is a ‘short’ 4 miles which is not too taxing, but being across plenty of clay soil, the paths tend to get greasy, so allow 65 to 70 minutes to complete the circuit.

Leaving the car we need to cross the fast flowing Stockbridge Road with great care, to the opposite path and turn right for a mere 100 metres, then turn left through a gate and proceed right at 45 degrees across a field. This is a well trodden path which shortly meets another path where we turn left and weave our way between fences and woods. Before long we cross a stile and move up hill through some long grass to a fresh gate and appear opposite the entrance to Michelmersh Brickworks.

This brick plant has played an important role in the commerce of the area since it first opened in 1842. Now capable of producing up to 72 million clay bricks per year, as well as quality clay roof tiles. Michelmersh Brick has been awarded a fistful of honours within the building and design industry over many years.

Continuing the walk we turn left along the road, past the offices, proceeding 150 metres down the road (past a bottle bank) and then taking the first right turn into the brick yard stock road. Very soon a footpath sign confirms our progress and once again a turn to the left at the relevant sign stops our progress into their yard as we sweep away through the woods. This path crosses a works track with two gates to warn us of the pending traffic (photo 2) then into an open field which affords great views across to the West into Hampshire and beyond. There is a slight climb along the right side of this field, then through two gates, which bring us out on a local road, Staff Road.

We turn right and again left after 50 metres to walk a switchback of a road up to Mesh Road then directly across to the footpath

and beside the thatched cottage (photo 3) before passing through a gate and turning sharp right up the right hand of the field.

As we climb, the field joins a stile that we cross and once again climb the narrow path towards Michelmersh Church that is the destination over a stile on the right. This church is a Grade II listed building that can trace its history back to the 12th century and with the iconic wooden tower is well worth a visit (photo 4).

Resuming the walk we must aim to the tiny gate on the right hand of the churchyard which leads us into an open field and the start of our sojourn along the well mentioned Monarch’s Way. Over the far side the stile leads us through woods then gradually opens up onto a grassy road and all with a gentle downhill, passing beside a large metal gate and onto a road where we turn right into Manor Farm Lane which zig zags down to a staggered crossroad.

At this point we should be heading directly across and downhill into New Road, which effectively means a dogleg left then right into the next road. Regretably there is no footpath on this section, but the road is wide and there is much grass verge beside the road to ensure safe passage.

This final stretch of around 500 metres needs a good eye to pick out the Southern Water Board site on the right which immediately precedes the footpath, which has a fine palm tree on the corner (photo 5).

We turn right here for only 100 metres before the path opens out on the left between fence and hedge, whereupon we turn left again and aim downhill through the field which takes us back to the starting gate and the crossing of Stockbridge Road and a return to the patiently waiting car.

Suitable refreshment is naturally available within The Malthouse.

Essential items for walking anytime:

• High visibility clothing, vest or sash are ideal. Be seen at all times.

• Robust footwear, walking boots, good sturdy trainers – normal house shoes not recommended.

• A torch (for gloomy days), mobile phone and a whistle (personal protection and safety).

• For dog walkers – take a supply of poop scoop bags.

Why Zumba? If you are wondering what Zumba has to offer, read on!

1. Start with most important element - the music. The best! Zumba covers every type of music from around the world, with Latin American producing the most uplifting sounds around.

2. The company. All classes are friendly and welcoming to newcomers. Young and ‘old’ alike can participate (I include myself in the latter category – I am probably the ‘oldest’ instructor in Hampshire, though I still feel 21!)

3. It’s fun! Dance is not about ‘pumping iron’ – it is, in my opinion, the best form of exercise as you are moving every part of your body, all the time. We run through between 10 – 15 routines a class, pretty much non-stop, (I keep chat to before and after class!) and I can vouch for the physical benefits of Zumba - having stayed at size 8/10 since I started 10 years ago!

4. It’s perfect for mental and physical health – both equally important in today’s world. When you ‘go into the zone’ there’s no better place to be.

5. You can genuinely ‘dance like there’s nobody watching’ – there isn’t! No competitive atmosphere. No divas… with the possible exception of a brightly coloured one at the front!

I currently run classes on Tuesdays 7.30pm at King’s Somborne Village Hall and Thursdays 6.30pm at Hursley’s John Keble Primary School Hall; and in future I would love to do ‘pop up classes’ in villages where there is currently no Zumba! If you would like a class (one off or otherwise) at your village, 2nd/3rd Wednesday of the month, let me know! Next one is Nov 15th 8pm at Braishfield Village Hall. Please book a place in advance.

So, if you dance in the kitchen, come to my classes! Any questions – contact me on [email protected] or go to my website www.zumba-around-winchester.com.

See you in class! Sue

Test Valley Chinese Medicine CentreDR YAN CLINIC

Bad headaches, stiff neck and shoulders

I visited Dr Yan about 6 weeks ago with such bad headaches that in the end I could hardly lay my head on my pillow at night. I had been suffering for months and kept saying I should try acupuncture out and finally I did. And WOW. I walked out after the first treatment and my headache had completely gone. Yes, I know, hard to believe, but this is the truth. I then had 5 more sessions with Dr Yan and my neck feels great and my shoulders feel about an inch lower.

I cannot recommend Dr Yan enough to anyone who will listen. If they take as long as I did to do something about it she will be VERY busy in a couple of months.

Thank you Dr Yan. Keep me on your books; if I have any other problems I WILL be back. x

Health & WellbeingThe Gazette’s Beauty Editor talks to Dorthe Thomas, Andover’s Anti-Ageing Skincare Specialist, to reveal her facial secrets and the best treatments available for facial rejuvenation.

Let me start by saying that I may have tried some non-invasive facial enhancements and for the most part, they delivered immediate results. However, I can’t shake this niggling feeling that Botox and Fillers are not really for me. Simply put, I don’t love the long-term effects of these on myself – or others.

Which is why I just had to seek out the one and only Dorthe Thomas, an Andover based “Super Facialist” whose High Street Spa recently won Gold at the British Hair & Beauty Awards. Ahead of her time, Dorthe has been collaborating for years with cutting edge Anti-Ageing brands such as Cryosthetics, to deliver non-invasive treatments that really work for her clients.

Dorthe looks at the skin holistically and observes that “most of us need to exercise 3 to 4 times a week to keep our body’s skin toned and tight and the same applies to our face.”

Dorthe’s facials will often start with a lymphatic drainage massage to detoxify your skin at a deep level. “Ageing well is about strengthening the connective tissues that are the framework beneath the skin that results in a fuller face and lifted skin,” Dorthe explains, adding that regular facial massage is one of the best ways to strengthen the connective tissue for optimum elasticity.

“It’s all about looking better

as you grow older. Today my clients demand more from their treatments; long gone are the days when they were content with receiving a facial that made them feel relaxed and glowing just for that one day. Now, and rightly so, they expect results that last.”Collagen-inducing treatments are her tried and tested approach for clients wanting more youthful looking skin. “When we’re young, our bodies naturally produce this protein in abundance, hence why skin appears firm, supple and smooth. However as we age, our collagen production begins to deplete and as a result skin becomes gradually looser, giving way to the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and sagging.”

Luckily, all is not lost, as there are ways in which we can stimulate the body’s own production of collagen. Dorthe offers a variety of collagen-inducing treatments to help rewind the clock and restore complexions back to their plump, taut and youthful best.

Microneedling, also known as Dermal Rollering involves causing a controlled injury to the skin as a way of effectively tricking the skin into repairing itself. The treatment involves rolling very fine needles over the target area and piercing the skin’s surface. Following this regulated injury, the skin’s healing process kicks into action, thus stimulating the

production of collagen and elastin. The CooLifting Gun sprays the facial tissues using a powerful CO2 flow at a very low temperature and high pressure, combined with an extremely high concentration of atomized anti-ageing and lifting ingredients. This action activates the blood circulation, induces collagen formation and increases the tissues oxygenation. One four minute session leaves the skin visibly smoother, nourished and more radiant.

FibroBlast is one of the newest and most exciting treatments to hit the beauty world! If you’re looking a little bit tired, becoming conscious of your laughter lines, falling out of love with your sagging eyelids or simply wanting a fresher look, then Fibroblast could be the treatment for you.

Dorthe is offering up to 50% off her anti-ageing treatments this October and November on presentation of this article.

Health & Wellbeing

Health and Wellness! What is meant by health and wellness and how many of us feel ‘healthy’ or ‘well’ most of the time?

Health can be defined variously, but the World Health Organisation defined health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”. It has also been defined as the ability of an individual to adapt and self-manage in the face of changes that are physical, social, mental or psychological.

Wellness, simply put, is the state of being healthy in both mind and body, especially as the result of deliberate effort, and is also an approach to healthcare that emphasises preventing illness and prolonging quality of life as opposed to treating diseases. Some elements of wellness are universal and some are personal according to the individual.

Thus, health and wellness can be expressed as an active process of making conscious decisions to make choices that promote health and well-being. That means making choices as demonstrated by choosing to eat a healthy nutritious diet, to be physically fit and active, to choose healthy activities for both body AND mind and to live a balanced life.

A body that is well means feeling full of energy and ready to live each day because you have a body that is fit and strong, that sleeps well, that is well fed with nutrient-rich, body-repairing foods. An unwell body is the opposite. Each day is an effort – sleep quality is poor, various ailments and conditions ranging from major to minor plague a person who does not have wellness. Overweight and unfit are the obvious outward signs, but internally the body is struggling to cope – the heart is working inefficiently to pump oxygen around the body and the entire body is showing the lack of care.

Achieving wellness can be so difficult for the overweight and unfit because an unwell body is a body that isn’t going to be motivated to get up and move, because carrying several excess stones and struggling to breathe motivates a person not to move. A body that is nutritionally deprived and oxygen deprived is not geared to move. A body that has very little lean muscle mass, poor cardiovascular endurance and metabolic activation finds it very difficult to get up and move. Why would an unwell body feel like going for a run or doing any kind of exercise? It wouldn’t, and so it’s a downward spiral that is so hard to turn around.

A state of wellness is what everybody would like to have if it could be handed to them, but the only way to achieve it is to take in oxygen and to start the body repairing internally. Success is hard to find because people expect to see immediate change and they focus on the scales and their outward appearance and so starve themselves on a faddy diet or try to follow an activity that they can’t sustain and are doomed to failure from the outset. Reduced calorie dieting is negative and doesn’t work long-term. Dieting makes you weaker, fatter, more unwell and not motivated to do anything, then when you try to add torturous exercise to starvation, it’s only a matter of time until you cave in and rebound back to over-eating and apathy. Changing your daily diet to one of eating real foods gives you results that are sustainable, positive

and are also immediate with the difference in vitality; you feel less like rubbish when you don’t eat rubbish.

The results of fitness, (aerobic exercise, working in oxygen), are immediate. As soon as you begin to do it, you have a bit more energy. Oxygen equals energy and life. Your heart pumps faster, carrying oxygenated blood to every cell and muscle in your body and you feel better. Start gradually with a little bit of walking, swimming, cycling, dancing or whatever form of movement appeals and you’ll have more energy/oxygen than you had yesterday, which is an immediate result. The results of building lean muscle mass are immediate as you noticeably build a bit more strength and energy every time you do it, so weight-training is vital for daily strength and doing that consistently means that you also start using up fat stores.

An unwell, high-fat, processed, inactive, bad choice, poor quality lifestyle habit can be turned around in just 30 to 60 minutes a day, taking a day at a time. You will feel better, have more energy, sleep well and feel empowered. All the internally-generated motivation you’ll ever need will be there when you start doing well things on a regular basis for the rest of your life. Healthy, slim people stay that way because they live that way. Wellness really works. Nutrient-rich food works. Movement in the form of any aerobic activity (oxygen = breathing a bit harder than normal) works. Choosing well works.

Wings offers a confidential and supportive counselling service in Romsey with experienced and accredited professionals who can help you to make sense of what you may be struggling with. We offer individual, couple or family counselling for any of the following issues:

• Anxiety• Stress• Obsessive Compulsive Disorders• Low mood and Depression• Relationship Issues

• Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder• Bereavement and Loss• Work based Issues• Life Changes and Transitions• Postnatal Depression

Do you sometimes wish that you had not said something or done something which you regret?

Or even wish at times that you had said or done something which could have made a difference but that you held back. Do you think you may be too spontaneous at times and at other times, overly controlled? Or you notice that on some days you feel you can conquer the world and soon after there are times when even going out or picking up the phone is a struggle. You probably feel demotivated and anxious. So how do you make sense of what is going on? How can you learn to regulate this emotional rollercoaster?

It is often important to gently explore and understand what are the underlying emotions which have built up. To understand why you have chosen to bottle these up and soldier on. You probably have a good idea as to what is causing this exhausting battle to cope at times, or you may genuinely not know. It does not take big events or traumas to get us to this point of roller coaster emotions which are difficult to regulate. It can simply be patterns of behaviour

which we adhere to in order to keep ourselves safe or loved and cared for. Sometimes just learning to recognise these patterns and thinking about how we may make small changes can be helpful.

Perhaps sitting down with an experienced and accredited counsellor can help you make sense of what is going on.

If you feel that you are on an emotional rollercoaster call us for an initial chat or to book an appointment through our website – www.wingscounselling.com, email: [email protected] or call 01794 329278 or text 07946 400257.

Plantation shutters have become very popular over the last few years due to their amazing versatility according to Mike Schnuppe, owner of The Great Shutter Co., and looking around Hampshire there is definitely an increasing number of homes with stylish shutters dressing their windows. With many homes being street facing you can see why. Shutters allow windows to be dressed with separate shutter panel sections and each of these can have the louvres adjusted for amazing privacy and light control.

Mike informed us that “Shutters are great for bay windows where homes are street facing but they are also amazing practical for dressing patio and bi-folding doors or those

awkward shaped windows. Finding the right product and receiving the right advice about your window is key to ensuring that you have shutters that will last a lifetime. We are proud of the fact that we rate highly on independent review sites such as Feefo, Checkatrade and Google reviews and that consumers are comfortable with the advice we give, the service we offer and the product we install.”

The Great Shutter Co. provide a free of charge and without an obligation to purchase, home consultation which allows the consumer to see exactly how their shutters would work in situ and what levels of control they would have over privacy and light.

To arrange a free, no obligation home consultation call The Great Shutter Co. on 01962 710807.
