Alma Road Surgery Charitable TrustThe Charitable Trust was formally established in 1987 in order to administer funds donated by supporters of the Alma Road Surgery by purchasing equipment, facilities and services, not normally provided by the statutory authorities but which will directly improve the patient experience.

Its brief has recently been extended to cover support for talks on healthcare and developments at the Practice as well as the publication of newsletters.

Some of these provisions in recent years have been:

• Take-home nebulisers to help asthma sufferers when their usual inhalers are deemed insufficient

• The blood-pressure monitor in the waiting room

• Take-home 24-hour heart and blood pressure monitors

• Diabetes monitoring equipment• In-surgery warfarin testing equipment inc.

The trustees meet every quarter at the surgery, together with the Practice Manager and a representative of the practitioners. From time to time they organise fund-raising events, such as the tombola at the annual ‘Flu Clinic in the Crosfield Hall. I came to live in Romsey nearly five years ago, and one of the first events I saw advertised in a local charity shop was a Beer Tasting Tour of Romsey Abbey. It was fun, both the tour and the beer, and it soon became clear that the Abbey welcomed many different activities, and was a focal point for people in the Romsey area, whether members of the congregation or not. Over the past year, among other events, there has been a display of quilting, an exhibition of furniture, art-work from students studying in Eastleigh, and a month of workshops on recycling, with

a fascinating show of what can be done with reused materials. All of these and wonderful musical events too.

My first visit led to membership of the Friends of the Abbey, and now I look after the rota of stewards. Stewards are not guides, but are there to welcome all visitors to the Abbey – and there were 40,000 last year. They are there every day, and the Abbey is kept open for all. We need over forty stewards every week and many are among the retired.

Some stewards volunteer for two hours every week, others every two or four weeks, some prefer to stand in for absences. There are currently gaps in the rota, particularly on Saturdays and Sundays, and there is always a need for more stewards to stand in for absences. Full training and support is given, stewards work as a

team of two, and it can be a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

Whether you are new to the area, or just haven’t called in recently, come and look around the Abbey. The stewards on duty will be happy to chat, and if you feel you might like to join the team, please contact us and we can have a chat about how to take it forward.

Viewfinders of Romsey Camera Club’s recent Landscape Trophy saw a whole host of impressive images, giving experienced judge Keven Sandall a tricky task. Gold went to Chris Maidens in the Print category for his creative ‘Trees and Mist’. The judge commented that it made him feel as though the heavens had just opened. Stuart Bennett came away with top honours in the Projected Digital Image category for his image ‘The Langdales’. The judge enthused about the style, atmosphere and colour of this work.

In July, Viewfinders will be holding their Annual Photographic Exhibition at King

John’s House, Romsey. The exhibition, of around 100 prints and many more projected images, runs from 9th to 17th July, from 10am to 4pm (Sundays 11am to 4pm); admission is free.

A Chorus of Disapproval A Comedy by Alan AyckbournGuy (Alan Glynne Jones) arrives as a lonely young widower to audition for Pendon Amateur Light Operatic Society’s production of The Beggar’s Opera.He progresses rapidly to the lead role, and finds himself the centre of attention of many of the cast, the ladies for amorous, and the gentlemen for business, reasons. Although bravely trying to please everyone, he inevitably ends by pleasing no-one.Ayckbourn cleverly intertwines the action behind the scenes with the plot of the Opera, and the characters are utterly recognisable to us all. He squeezes comedy from every line and misunderstanding.

The play will be held in the beautiful garden of The Bunny (opposite the entrance to Longstock Nursery) on Thursday 30th June, Friday 1st July and Saturday 2nd July, all at 7.30pm. The final performance on the 2nd of July will be a gala night. The price of tickets will include a glass of Buck’s Fizz and canapes and the profits will go to the Countess of Brecknock Hospice in Andover.

Or we stay anxiously attached to someone fearful of the pain of being let down.

If we pause for a moment to look at what type of attachment pattern we exhibit and then think about the pattern a friend or partner exhibits, we can start to understand why a relationship can struggle when stress or fear of being abandoned is present and builds up.

Understanding our attachment pattern can also help us to not make a similar mistake when our relationship breaks down. It can help us to understand our partner or friends better and learn the part we are playing if we are experiencing difficulties. Through understanding ourselves and our past better we can start to create more secure relationships with others.

• Skin tags

Skin tags are pedunculated papules consisting of normal skin with a loose ‘neck’ connecting it to the skin. They may be pigmented or non-pigmented often occurring in areas of friction. They can be hereditary and may also occur during pregnancy. There is an increased occurrence with age but they can also be caused by the Human Papilloma Virus.

• Senile warts otherwise known as Seborrhoeic Keratosis

Seborrhoeic Keratosis are a benign growth of the skin cells. They eventually develop into scaly like lesions with a ‘stuck on’ appearance and can be from 2mm to 2cm. The colour and shape can vary but they are mainly found on the head, face, neck and trunk of individuals over the age of 40.

• Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra – DPN

DPN are histologically identical to senile warts and are smooth, flat, dome shaped lesions that mainly occur on individuals with coloured skin. They can be hereditary.

• Warts

Warts are benign growths caused by a viral infection of the skin cells. The virus causes thickening of the skin with spaces and scaling. Central capillaries can be viewed as black dots.

• Milia

Milia are tiny cysts that contain keratin and sebum, an oily deposit. The exact cause is unknown but they are possibly related to diet. Milia most commonly occur over upper cheeks and beneath the eyes but can occur anywhere on the body. They are often no larger than a pinhead. They can appear as an isolated nodule or in clusters.

• Syringoma

These are a benign tumor of the sweat gland and look like milia but are soft. They can occur from adolescence onwards and are usually found in multiples around the eyes.

• Sebaceous Hyperplasia

These are enlarged or blocked sebaceous glands which can be yellowish or whitish in colour. Tiny blood vessels may be visible. They occur most commonly on the face but may occur anywhere.

• Campbell De Morgan Spot / Cherry Angioma

These are purple/red coloured lesions with a domed, smooth surface and up to 5mm in diameter. They are due to a proliferation in the capillaries and occur mainly on the trunk of individuals. Often they appear over several months.

• Spider Naevus

These have a central capillary from which fine capillaries radiate, resembling the legs of a spider – hence the name spider naevus. The central body or capillary is often raised and in the majority of cases supplies the blood for the radiating capillaries. Spider naevi can occur as a result of mechanical injury.

Dermal & Subcutaneous Conditions

• Xanthomata

These are lipid laden (fat) deposits and appear as yellowish papules, plaques and nodules. Plaques commonly found around and on the eyelids are called Xanthelasmas. Other Xanthomata’s may appear as firm yellow nodules.

MICRODERMABRASIONMicrodermabrasion is a popular, safe and effective way of exfoliating the skin mechanically whilst stimulating cellular activity in the lower layers of the skin.

Infinite MajestyThis year the nation celebrates the Queen’s 90th birthday. In villages, towns and cities across the United Kingdom people are planning events and celebrations to honour a well-loved and extraordinary sovereign. Romsey Choral Society, based in a town with strong ties to the royal family, is no exception. On 2nd July the singers will raise their 70 voices in concord with Romsey Abbey’s magnificent organ and triumphant, declamatory brass instruments played by members of the City of Southampton Orchestra. The concert programme features music by the most lauded of British composers – Elgar, Holst, Mathias, Rutter, Vaughan Williams and Walton, and one mystery man, the much respected Belgian composer Joseph Jongen – a name perhaps less familiar than the others. And it is he who marries the sounds of brass, organ and voices in the sacred setting of the Mass. Jongen conducted the first performance of his Mass in Liège, Belgium in 1946 and favourable press reviews reported that it achieved a profound impression of “majestic grandeur and piety”. A worthy addition therefore to an otherwise British programme.

Romsey Choral Society is also celebrating the enormous success of their recent charity fundraiser. On 16th April they raised around £8,000 for the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance service. 290 singers came from far and wide for a ‘Come and Sing’ day in Romsey Abbey together with the City of Southampton Orchestra. An afternoon of rehearsal produced an epic evening performance of Sir Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man – A Mass for Peace. Since 2000, RCS has organised five such events that have raised £28,000 in total for a number of charities.

How strong is your heart?How strong and healthy is your heart? Heart and circulatory diseases are the leading causes of death for men and women in the UK but it’s not something people like to think about unless they start to have symptoms of heart problems.Heart disease includes conditions such as coronary heart disease, heart attack and congestive heart failure. Prevention is always better than cure. The heart is a muscle, which means it can be worked and strengthened. It’s possible that you’re healthy now, but that some of the things you’re doing put you at risk for future heart problems.Just some things that can contribute to heart disease include:

• Being overweight or obese• Smoking• Family history of heart problems• Stress• Being sedentary• Eating a high fat diet• Hypertension• Depression• High cholesterol

Other than genetic reasons, you do have some control over how healthy your heart is. What you do, what you eat and how you live can actually change how your heart works and make it stronger with just a few changes in your lifestyle. If there are no health problems, then starting to increase your heart rate regularly and consistently through any form of movement can only be good for the heart, because exercise is a key component of looking after your heart. For the very unfit or those with health issues, starting to train the heart should be done under supervision after clearance from your G.P.

After exertion, whether having to run for a bus or exercising in any way, you’ve certainly felt the immediate effects – your heart speeds up as your body demands more oxygen, your breathing rate increases and you start to sweat to cool your body. As soon as you stop exercising all of those things go back to normal, quickly if you’re fit and not so quickly if you’re unfit!

However, what you may not know is that exercising consistently can actually change how your heart functions. Regular exercise:

• Lowers your resting heart rate (RHR). A heart that’s strong and healthy beats fewer times when you’re at rest. That’s why many athletes have resting heart rates as low as 40 or 50 beats per minute. As you exercise, you’ll find your RHR will decrease as you get into better shape.

There has been a decline in the number of people getting married, according to official statistics, in 2013 when compared with 2012, of 8.6%. Another interesting statistic is that for those entering their first marriage in 2013, the average age was 32.5 years for men and 30.6 years for women, representing increases of almost 8 years since 1973. The average age for men marrying in 2013 was 36.7 years and for women 34.3 years. This represents a slight increase compared with 2012 and continues the overall rise recorded since the 1970’s. Many couples are choosing to cohabit rather than marry, either as a precursor to marriage or as an alternative. What may be overlooked however by people who choose to live together, rather than marrying, is the lack of legal rights which cohabitees have on the breakdown of a relationship, or on the death of one partner, when compared with the rights applicable to divorce and as to inheritance, when parties are married. Marriage still provides financial protection, especially for the weaker party, usually the female partner. On divorce, the Court can award financial provision, including spousal maintenance, lump sums, transfer of property orders, and orders for sale and particularly relevant in many cases, pension sharing or pension attachment orders. There is no right to make such claims, if a cohabiting relationship breaks down. The pension rights will often be the most valuable asset of the parties.Women are particularly vulnerable when having children, as many will not return to work, or work part time, becoming financially disadvantaged, compared with the man who may continue working full time and

be able to continue to contribute to a pension fund. Many people do not realise the importance of these financial rights on death or relationship breakdown, where parties are married, when compared with cohabiting couples.

It has been said that any fool can get married, but it may be a wise choice for many people, although when contemplating marriage they are rarely considering at that time, their financial rights and obligations on any subsequent relationship breakdown, or on death.

It will benefit many people to take legal advice from a solicitor before cohabiting with a partner, or before entering a marriage, as to their rights, during the relationship, on its breakdown, or on the death of one party. Consideration should, in particular, be given to making valid wills, as unlike in a marital situation, on the death of a party, the Intestacy Rules do not apply to cohabiting couples. It is important to remember there is no such thing as a “common law marriage” and therefore no such rights exist between cohabiting couples, either in life or in death.

This month’s walk starts from a fairly remote location just 3 miles North of Romsey, St Mary’s

Church, Church Road, Michelmersh, SO23 7QL (photo 1). The church was built in the 12th century and has a wooden tower on the South side, and sits on the main route of the Monarchs Way as well. To find the church, turn right up the lane beside the Bear & Ragged Staff Pub on the A3057 Stockbridge Road.

At a ‘long’ 5 mile effort this walk is reasonably tough, involving a number of climbs, so could easily take between 100 and 120 minutes.

Leaving the car we head across the road from the church to a footpath that threads neatly between two fields, shortly to cross a stile and join the left hand edge of one field. About 150 metres down this field we meet a path going left and right. We take the right hand option that divides two open fields, dropping down a valley and then climbing back up again even higher – meeting and then passing through a small woodland. Keep to the straight through option in the woods to emerge at a stile and turn right round the first field as far as a new

stile, then repeat the right hand walk along the grass verge. The footpath arrows in both instances aim across the cultivated ground so the edge option is more farm friendly.

At the second field we meet a gate and an arrow pointing us down a very steep hill. The footpath at this section offers a handrail as support on the early slope, which eases down to a gate then a final

surge to the bottom of the valley and the edge of Lower Brook (photo 2).

At this point we cross a stile and the road (right on a narrow bend) to take the path through the hedge and emerge at a major footpath crossroad. We are now looking across the River Test Meadows with a large house standing back in mid meadow. We need to turn right here along the Test Way, along the discontinued railway which was once the ‘Sprat and Winkle Line’. The next 1400 metres represents a tranquil, easy stroll with the meadows stretching over to the left and the busy Stockbridge Road (mostly out of sight and sound), over to the right.

As we approach and pass a cottage on the left then another cottage on the right we are preparing to take the slip road right up the slope, just before a steel bridge crossing the Test Way. Here we join a gravel track for 100 metres, passing a set of holiday apartments, and halting at the main road before turning right and walking very carefully on the edge for 150 metres as far as the lay by.

Opposite this lay by stands a house, often selling garden produce, and a track beside it leading uphill (the second of two tracks). We need to cross the road, taking care as we resume the walk through a signposted gate and then a long, steady, climb that goes up, flattens out, then drops and climbs again. With fields spreading out both left and right our companions now are buzzards, kestrels and the occasional bird scarer being set off around us.

This track twists, climbs and drops for almost 2.5 kilometres before dropping down a slope to Lower Eldon Farm and a footpath sign (photo 3), at which point we turn right up the gravel track and head into woods in the distance. This track starts to level off in a while and takes us through a gate and a more rustic version of the farm trail through further woods that eventually turn a hairpin bend and meet a double stile on the right where we cross both (photo 4) to traverse through further woods to finally meet a gate, beside a tall wooden fence that borders, Michelmersh Court, the Grade II Listed Property that once belonged to Sir David Frost.

Walking up this slope for around 300 metres we can meet a little mud or rutted ground for the final push up to Michelmersh Church and home again. Reward and refreshment probably lie best down the road at The Bear & Ragged Staff Pub.

Essential items for walking anytime:

• High visibility clothing, vest or sash are ideal. Be seen at all times.

• Robust footwear, walking boots, good sturdy trainers – normal house shoes not recommended.

• A torch (for gloomy days), mobile phone and a whistle (personal protection and safety).

• For dog walkers – take a supply of poop scoop bags.

Summertime Motoring TipsTyres - If your tyres are in poor condition or at the wrong pressure, the higher summer temperatures will increase the risk of a blowout. Make sure you check tyre condition and pressures regularly and adjust pressures to suit extra loads.

Overheating - High temperatures can add to cooling system problems. Check the coolant and cooling system regularly to avoid overheating.

Glare - Dazzle from the sun can cause accidents so reduce the effect by keeping your windscreen clean, and by replacing worn windscreen wipers. Bartley do not charge any labour for fitting wiper blades and this can be done while you wait, so pop in!

Tiredness - If you feel tired, stop and take a short nap. Don’t stop for a nap on the hard shoulder, and make sure you check parking restrictions to avoid parking fines!

It’s best to avoid getting tired in the first place if you can. Include a 20 minute break in journeys of over 3 hours, on longer trips, stop for a break every 2 hours. Don’t drink alcohol or eat a heavy meal before driving.

Hayfever - If you have particularly bad hayfever it is best to get someone else to drive if you can. If not, make sure any medication does not cause drowsiness, close windows and air vents to reduce pollen in the car, clean mats and carpets regularly to get rid of dust, keep tissues close to hand and wear sunglasses to block out bright sunlight. Did you know that at 70mph you will lose vision for up to 100m? So slow down if you feel a sneeze coming!
