58-59 What’s on in your area

to the April Romsey and Wellow Gazette.

Spring is well on the way now. The clocks have gone forward so lighter nights, and hopefully

warmer days to come.

We have lots of interesting articles in the magazine this month; I hope you enjoy reading them and maybe some of them will be useful information.

There will be a lot of what I call goings on up and down the country for the next few months with the special celebrations for our very dear Queen Elizabeth 2nd celebrating her 90th Birthday; a real milestone. A majority of the UK love the Royal Family, especially the Young Royals as they are called. Our Royal Family are loved the world over and I think that is something to be proud of as a nation. They have had their ups and downs the past few years, but at the end of the day they are human just like us.

I hope you all have a good April… and Summer is on its way… Yippeeeeeee

STEAMED UP DOUBLE GLAZING?Don’t replace the Frames... just the Panes!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Justin Friel feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Romsey, Wellow and the surrounding areas & Justin is finding that his approach is a major

factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work

for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Justin a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

A Romsey Historian – John LathamMuch of what we know about Romsey’s past comes from the work of Dr. John Latham who lived in Middlebridge Street at the end of the eighteenth century.

After retiring from his medical practice in Dartford he came to live near his son. Like to-day’s local historians he then began collecting all the relevant and interesting material he could find about the town’s history. The sources he used included documents, some in the original Latin, from local solicitors, the Bishops’ Registers in Winchester and the Abbey Church. Many of these original documents have since been lost and we only know of them from his collection. He also made notes on events which took place in his time such as the catch of a ten pound salmon in the stream flowing down Middlebridge Street and the beaver bones, identified by him found in a local peat bed.

After John Latham’s death the British Museum, recognising the importance of his notes, acquired the volumes for their archives. LTVAS, now the Romsey Local History Society, bought a micro film of them about forty years ago and since then various members have typed them, put them on computer and translated the Latin. Phoebe Merrick, Chairman of the Society, has been checking the references and sorting the material into categories for easier research. She is hoping that within a few years it will be in print and available to everyone interested in the history of Romsey.

In the meantime the typed and computer versions can be consulted in the basement of the Town Hall during the Society’s drop–in workshops open on Monday mornings and Tuesday evenings.

Further information on the Society’s activities can be found on its website: www.ltvas.org.uk

This spring, an intriguing exhibition of rarely seen works by some of Britain’s most famous twentieth-century artists goes on show at the National Trust’s Mottisfont in Hampshire.

Over 50 drawings and sketches will be displayed, alongside works from Mottisfont’s own collection and drawings by contemporary artist David Breuer-Weil for his sculpture Alien, installed in the parkland at Mottisfont until the autumn.

The Schlee Collection: Drawings from Henry Moore to David Hockney features works by major artists including Graham Sutherland, Peter Lanyon, Stanley Spencer and Gillian Ayres. Visitors will be able to enjoy portraits and landscapes, as well as observational drawings, abstract works and compositional sketches.

Highlights include studies by Sutherland for his crucifixion paintings, where stark black lines and dense shading create Christ’s agonised form on the cross. In contrast, Stanley Spencer used delicate pencil outlines to represent stretcher-bearers during the First World War. The show ranges from the energetic scribbles of Frank Auerbach, from which London landscapes take shape, to the exuberant colours of Gillian Ayre’s abstract work and Michael Rothenstein’s designs of birds.

This major private collection was put together by brothers Philip and Nick Schlee. They were businessmen, Philip organising conferences and Nick managing sea containers, in some ways tracing a line back to their grandfather who ran a tea business in Shanghai a hundred years ago. Both brothers also loved art: Nick took early retirement and became a respected artist, while older brother Philip (who died in 2011) provided funds for a family collection to be created.

Nick had a free hand as he began to collect paintings, drawings and original prints. Philip

‘would send me open cheques and leave it all to me,’ recalls Nick. ‘I was interested in drawings as much as oils, tracing the foundation of what would become the finished work.’ Donated to Southampton City Art Gallery in 2013, it is one of the largest bodies of work ever to be given to the city. Mottisfont has collaborated with Southampton City Art Gallery’s Lead Curator Tim Craven to put together this new exhibition of highlights from the collection.

‘The breadth of work is wonderful,’ notes Louise Govier, Mottisfont’s curator of exhibitions. ‘It really allows visitors to explore how and why artists make marks – to plan and be precise, to work out an idea, to express something deeply internal. There are fantastically detailed drawings such as Thomas Hennell’s pen and ink interior of Beaulieu Mill, and evocative sketches such as Dale Atkinson’s charcoal sketches, which bring cats to life on the page with just a few strokes and smudges. There’s also lots of colour – not all drawings are black and white! We’re delighted to be able to show such a wide range of work by so many well-known artists.’

Home of art-lover Maud Russell in the 1930s, Mottisfont became a hub for literary and artistic figures in the early twentieth century and this is reflected with a vibrant series of changing exhibitions today. The former Augustinian priory is also a permanent home to the Derek Hill Collection, an inspiring collection of art from the same period as the Schlee Collection, and including many of the same artists, a number of whose works are on show in this spring exhibition. Amongst the pieces on view is a drawing by Barbara Hepworth, which will be displayed with borrowed Henry Moore drawings, the artist she learned most from and also influenced in her turn.

The Schlee Collection: Drawings from Henry Moore to David Hockney will be on display from 23 April – 3 July. Mottisfont’s gallery opens at 11am and closes at 5pm. Normal property admission price only, free for National Trust members.

There’ll be a spotter trail for children to explore the gallery and a linked ‘drawing’ trail for families to enjoy in May half term.

For more information visit www.nationaltrust.org.uk/mottisfont or call 01794 340757.

The first weekend of Transition Town Romsey’s month long ‘Trash to Treasure’ event saw CURB kitchen’s pop-up food waste cafe serve

meals to almost 100 people – including Caroline Nokes MP, the Vicar of Romsey, the Mayor of Test Valley and the Mayor of Romsey. After lunch visitors viewed the exhibition and sculptures inside and outside Romsey Abbey, or joined in a free workshop.

One of the talking points was the sculptures by the South Door of the Abbey, based on the theme of recycling. Butterflies made from aluminium drink cans, which had been discarded as litter, covered one part of the installation, to represent the loss of valuable resources locally. 540 cans were collected from local hedgerows and pavements during January and February and then made into butterflies. So, as well as drawing attention to the fact that there are still many of us who just throw away things which could be easily recycled, we also did our bit to ‘Clean for the Queen’.

Workshops using recycled household materials continued throughout the month on Saturday mornings for the

general public, and during the week for school groups. Those who attended, learnt how to make things out of plastic bags, Christmas wrapping paper, ring pulls, old clothes and old books.

Thanks must go to the Revd. Canon Tim Sledge for allowing us to use the Abbey for this event and HCC and TVBC for awarding grants to help finance it.

The starting gun has now been fired and the 2016 Test Valley Business Awards are open for entries!

Following a very successful

launch at The White Horse Hotel & Brasserie, Romsey, on 4th March, nominations/entries are now open until 6th May.

With nearly 100 sponsors, supporters, and interested local businesses attending this widely anticipated event, 2016 promises to be one of the Awards’ biggest yet; marking the opening of nominations/entries for the year.

Guest Speaker at the launch, Revd. Canon Tim Sledge, remarked at the event: “A strong economy benefits the local community but it also contributes to something beyond. That’s why these awards and the aspiration which comes with them are so important on a wider canvas.”

The Awards categories and Gold Sponsors for 2016 are:

• Doing Business Locally – Taylored IT

• Food & Drink producer of the year – McCrimmon & Reid

• Innovation & Technology Award – University of Southampton Science Park

• New Business of the Year – Test Valley Borough Council

• Small Business of the Year – Wilkins Kennedy

There is also a special award for 2016, in memory of long-standing Steering

Committee member Brenda Locke, who sadly passed away suddenly last year. The Brenda Locke Award, sponsored by Andover Mutual Business Group and friends of Brenda, will celebrate Women in Business.

Now in its 12th year, the Test Valley Business Awards – run by a small steering group of volunteers and supported by the Council – has become a well-established platform to promote businesses excellence and especially to shine a light on the many new and small innovative businesses operating out of sight. It is a great way to enable smaller enterprises to gain the recognition and exposure to grow.

Businesses are free to enter themselves or members of the public, and other businesses may nominate partners, suppliers, or local businesses they feel are deserving of an award; the Awards are free to enter and all nominations and entries must be done online.

For more information about the Awards, and to nominate/enter, please visit:  www.tvbawards.org.uk.

Community NewsWellow Primary School were very excited to hear that they were one of only five schools in the country, and the only one picked

in Hampshire, to be taking part in a trip to France to commemorate the 600th anniversary of the Battle of Agincourt.

The competition was run by the Historical Association who, with the help of Rayburn tours, had organised a range of visits, enquiries and activities to teach the children about Henry V’s famous battle.

The Battle of Agincourt is of particular relevance and importance to our community. Before leaving for Agincourt, soldiers were camped in fields surrounding the area we live in, awaiting orders to board the hundreds of ships gathered at Southampton’s port. It was here that saw Henry V and his troops preparing for battle, leaving Southampton for Harfleur and onwards to victory at the battle of Agincourt. At Agincourt, Henry Vs greatly depleted and outnumbered army achieved the impossible, shocking the medieval world.

Beth Larcombe, head of Wellow Primary School said: “This was a wonderful opportunity to really develop our children’s understanding of this significant historical event. The children taking part were excited and grateful to have the chance to learn alongside their French peers.”

Lucy Stanley, Francine Jarvis, Alfie Moore and Flynn Stevens, all from Year 5, were able to spend time in a French Primary school, making friends while practising their language skills.

The French and English children then tried their hand at archery and spent time visiting the battlefield, making their own

shields and using role play to re-enact the famous battle. The children studied the monuments commemorating the battle and made inferences as to how differently the Battle is remembered in France.

During their time away, the children also had the opportunity to visit the Chateau Museum in Boulogne, handling real artefacts before walking the Medieval ramparts. The children also got to visit a real French market.

Kerry Somers, head of history at the school, said: “At Wellow School, we are always keen to secure real learning opportunities for our children. This was a rich educational experience for our little historians, who enjoyed practising their French while learning first-hand about this battle that has particular relevance to Hampshire. The soldiers left from Southampton before they entered France. It’s part of our children’s local history. It’s their story to tell.”

Arriving home, the children now aim to work with their French peers to design a lasting memorial to commemorate the battle from both the French and English perspective.

Age Concern Romsey and District helps to meet the needs and interests of older

people in the Romsey and District area. We cover Romsey Town itself as well as the whole of Southern Test Valley, including Abbotswood, Sherfield English, Braishfield, Timsbury, Lockerley, Wellow, Ampfield, Awbridge, North Baddesley, Nursling and Rownhams, part of Valley Park and other villages and localities.

We formed in 1989 to recognise the impending explosion nationally of the over-60s population to some 19 million people by 2031 (which is one-third of the total UK population!). Our work included supporting older people to come together to support each other and indicate their needs. This resulted in Age Concern working with other groups and

organisations to provide services that older people had requested. In 1996 we worked with the Over 60s club to take over their hall and carry on their legacy.

We have over 30 people actively involved with the running of the organisation including trustees, part-time workers, volunteers and helpers.

Why we are here? We are here to:• Promote the well-being of all

Ampfield Golf & Country ClubAmpfield Golf & Country Club, situated half way between Romsey and Winchester has fast established a great reputation for Weddings, Parties (birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas parties to name a few) christenings, society dinners, afternoon teas, drinks receptions, great lunches and of course stunning golf course too! Open to non members, it is one of the hidden gems in the local area, especially for their fantastic home cooked lunches served Tuesday – Saturday every week! The catering is something that is quite unique and certainly bucks the trend of golf course dining!  All the food is homemade, working with the seasons, and the produce is locally sourced from the surrounding area. The lunch menu features local produce and tantalising flavours with 2 courses only £12 & 3 courses £15! Sunday is slightly different, the main dining room is opened with crisp white linen draping the tables, an ever so slightly more formal occasion, with traditional Sunday roasts as well as superb fish and vegetarian options available too.

Private parties and events are a big part of the Golf & Country Club, with its flexible approach to all events, it’s no wonder they are so busy this year! With plans well under way, especially important for those bespoke weddings, the Golf & Country Club really has it work cut out. Each wedding and party is created on a bespoke basis emphasising the fantastic variety of food the kitchen team can cater. Catering up to 100 for a sit down meal or 180 for a more informal affair, the versatility of the club is endless! Adjoining the main dining room and club house is 3 beautiful terraces with gas heaters, fire pits and rattan sofas, the ideal location for you and your guests to relax and unwind whatever the occasion, overlooking the well maintained golf course! Kristin (the Events Manager) and his team, have a great attention to detail, to not only guide you through the organising of your party but also to help design and give you some new and innovative ideas! With parties ranging from as small as 12 for intimate dinners through to 180 guests, each events is given the team’s full attention, to wow you and your guests!

Dare it be mentioned, but Christmas this year is the Club’s biggest ever, hosting an array of shared party nights, catering up to 240 guests for a sit down meal each night. Squeezed in on the nights not occupied by the shared parties, a variety of exclusive parties for the larger business in and around the surrounding area!

The golf side of things started with a very wet note this year, but as we creep into the spring more and more golfers are dusting off their clubs for the coming season. The team of green keeps are working endlessly to deliver what is one of the best par 3 golf courses in England!

If you would like further information about the facilities Ampfield Golf & Country Club offers, please get in touch with Kristin, [email protected] or 01794 368480 (opt 4). Exclusively for readers, the Club is offering 50% off the room hire of the main room, making that party you have always been dreaming of, that more affordable! Quote WG03

“Grinning and bearing it is the worst thing you can do” – (Daily Telegraph, Feb 26th 2016). This is based on research by psychologists from the

University of Toronto who looked mainly at the suppressed emotions of parents. We are told about managing our feelings and not over burdening our children. But do we believe that children do not pick up on parental stress? And what does this do to us? “The person who puts on a smile in order to keep someone else happy could suffer as a result of bottled up emotions.”

How often are we surprised by someone who seems to cope with a smile and yet suffers from raised blood pressure, anxiety, depression, migraines or other physical and psychological symptoms which are at least partly due to stress? How much easier if we can learn to express ourselves and at the same time not feel guilty or hurt others? It is the fear that we may be seen as not a good parent, partner or colleague which can often lead us to grin and bear it.

If you recognise this in yourself and wish that you could give yourself the permission to stop putting up with situations where you find yourself responding with an accepting smile while inwardly struggling with what you are asked to accept or do, then perhaps you might like to see how you can change the way you respond which can also makes you feel better and more heard by others.

If you feel that you would like to stop “grinning and bearing” the things that life throws at you, perhaps talking to one of our experienced and supportive counsellors might help you discover that there are other ways to manage your life without it affecting your mental and physical health.

Call 0800 028 2294

I have had a number of calls in the last month from customers who have their router in one room but actually want to use their computer in another room or even in a garden located office.

Don’t despair, there are a number of potential solutions to this problem:

1. Is your computer joined by a cable to the router? Did you know that it doesn’t have to be – it can be made wireless which means you can move the computer away from the router.

2. It may be possible to move your router to another phone point which is in a more convenient place for you.

3. Maybe a wireless repeater would work for you. This is a solution that only involves a spare power socket in between the router and where you want to sit but this has the disadvantage of halving the wireless speed. The repeater relays the wireless signal from the computer to the router.

4. A Homeplug solution. One unit plugs into the mains near the router and effectively puts your broadband onto the mains wiring. You can plug other units into a wall socket wherever you need broadband or additional wireless signals. This allows you to connect a smart TV/Sky box/laptop/games console anywhere in the house (wirelessly or wired) to the internet.

If you need some help with this or want to discuss it further don’t hesitate to call me.

Are you sitting comfortably - but is it in the right place? asks Peter Clarke of PC PAL

The idea of choosing a new kitchen should be an exciting time. The opportunity to transform the hub of your house into your dream kitchen is one which should be a truly relaxing, enjoyable and happy experience.Yet, we know from experience that when it comes to choosing a kitchen, the choice can be simply overwhelming. From selecting the perfect colour doors and complementary worktops, to deciding if you want handles, and if you do, which handles do you choose, or do you choose handle free? To picking the latest appliances, splashbacks and extractor fans, the list really does go on.Going to a showroom can be a daunting task, especially if you haven’t pinned down the ideas that you really want. You may feel pressured into purchasing a kitchen, that you feel will ‘just do’ and not the one you really want. The kitchen has become the heart of the home, a place for the entire family to get together when life is hectic, a space for entertaining guests whilst still being part of the equation and a place to relax over a coffee and a paper, making it even more important to get it right. That’s why at Happy Kitchens, we have decided to bring the showroom to you. Being away from the dazzling and glitzy lights in the showroom really can make a world of difference. Our customers love the fact that you can see how your chosen colour scheme will look in the natural light of your own home. What looks good under a multitude of spotlights may not look the same on a grey, cold and rainy day in your kitchen. You can put your sample doors in place of your existing kitchen furniture and get a real feel for the transformation which lies ahead. We will also leave the samples with you so that you can see how they look at different times of the day and the ever changing British weather. We can also get a feel for the space you are

working with, whether it’s a new kitchen that you are after or a stunning makeover, we are then able to get a feel of what works and more importantly what doesn’t. We can guide you through the design process, giving you the best choice options without overwhelming you and provide lots of food for thought.Bringing the showroom to you really works with our popular kitchen makeovers, especially for our customers who are looking to sell their homes. A kitchen makeover is a simple and effective way to breathe new life in to your property and freshen up a tired and run down room. What’s really great about our kitchen makeovers is the price, on average it costs between 3k and 5k to makeover your kitchen and you wouldn’t be able to recognise that it’s not a brand new kitchen. What’s more staggering is that an unattractive and outdated kitchen can devalue your property anywhere between 15k and 20k. Not only this, it gives potential buyers a chance to negotiate even lower on the asking price.Often there isn’t even the need for an entire brand new kitchen to be fitted. Most kitchen cupboards

are still in great condition. At Happy Kitchens we can look at changing the doors, worktops, panel faces lighting pelmet and cornice to match the existing colours in your kitchen. This will achieve the same outcome as a brand new kitchen but without the extra time, costs and hassle. In addition, a more attractive home has a greater chance

of enticing buyers to come and view it. The more people who view your home, the more likely you are to receive an offer on your property. It really is up to how much or how little you wish to spend. Whether you are aiming to add the latest kitchen accessories like the ‘hot tap’, or just simply change the doors and worktops, we can do it for you. If you’d like us to make your kitchen a Happy Kitchen talk to us today to find out more. Eva James Foster

We have all seen those adverts in the paper or on the TV which encourage you to take out an IVA and, “using a little known piece of government legislation”, write off 75% of your debts.

Well surprise surprise, if it seems too good to be true that is because it is too good to be true!

IVA’s or to give them their full name “Individual Voluntary Arrangements” are an alternative to Bankruptcy whereby you pay back what you can afford for 5 years and creditors will, generally, write off up to 75% of what they are owed. This is because, if you have nothing to lose, creditors would rather receive something (i.e. 25p in the £) over 5 years through an IVA than nothing in Bankruptcy.

If you have nothing to lose, the proper advice would not necessarily be an IVA but Bankruptcy whereby you write off 100% of your debts and you don’t have to pay something for 5 years.

An IVA may be appropriate where you do have something to lose, such as the equity in your home or your job/career prospects. In these instances creditors will generally favour an IVA against Bankruptcy because they are likely to receive a bigger pay out through an IVA than Bankruptcy.

If you can afford to pay your debts in full then creditors are unlikely to write off any of their debts, let alone 75%.

If you are facing financial difficulty and would like to know what the right options are for you then call Beacon on 08000 843841 for a free initial consultation.

CASE STUDYMr B came to see the experts at Beacon about a year ago. He had got into financial difficulty due to a period of unemployment and through having to look after his wife who was seriously ill. He owed almost £80,000 on numerous credit cards and bank loans.

What he wanted was to be given time to sell the matrimonial home and pay his debts in full from the equity in the house which was over £100,000.

I asked him how his wife felt about that? He said that she was fine and would go along with whatever was best for him. I advised that what was best for him was not necessarily best for her. As she was the joint owner of the property half of the equity in it was hers and why would she want to pay off his debts for him?

I suggested that she take her own independent advice and as a consequence she was advised to keep her share of the sale of the property.

Mr B then entered into an IVA with his creditors and put all of his 50% share of the equity in the property into the IVA. Creditors received nearly 70% of what they were owed and wrote off the balance.

Mrs B was left with enough to put down a deposit on a small flat. If she had allowed her husband to use her money to pay his creditors they would have been left with very little.

Can you really write off 75% of your debts through an IVA?

Education News

The same week as Hampshire Collegiate School launched their new Golf Academy with PGA Advanced Pro Dean Halford, congratulations must go to the Hampshire Collegiate School Senior Golf Team who on 1st March won the Southern Area (P) Independent School Golf Association (ISGA) finals. The 3 players – playing against Winchester College – Arrun Brar, Henry Sparks and Arvind Brar, were confident for their chances from the start.

Hampshire Collegiate School pupil quotes:

Arrun Brar, Year 12, said: “It was a good tournament. All three of us won which was really nice.”

Henry Sparks, Year 11, said: “Despite windy and cold weather conditions we were confident of a win. It was really good that we all won and it will be a great experience for us to play at St Andrews.”

Arvind Brar also in Year 11 is really looking forward to playing in the finals at St Andrews in April. “I have never played there before and I am looking forward to discovering more about the history of golf, when we are there”.

Andrew Egford, Director of Sport at HCS said: “Their route to victory has seen some great battles along the way, beating Prior Park School, Canford School and Winchester College. All the pupils have contributed to the overall victory and have shown a great deal of determination in some tough matches. In conjunction with our new Golf Academy we hope this is just a taster of the success to come at the school.”

The team will now go onto the National Finals, held at St Andrew’s, Scotland in April. It will be a massive honour for the pupils to represent the school for a second consecutive year at this level, especially at the ‘Home of Golf’.

The BodyBarn provides specialist hair and beauty treatments in a spacious refurbished barn that is set in the rural village of Stockbridge with plenty of free off road parking. My overall first impression is that the company has an up market feel and my personal customer experience was of a very high standard. The salon is a clean and functional space, with friendly experienced staff who are very welcoming ensuring you feel as comfortable as possible and the coffee is amazing! I had booked in for two semi permanent makeup treatments, eye brows and lower eyeliner.

Tamara Bonnar is such a lovely lady who has lived in the area most of her life, so we found we had quite a lot in common and knew a number of the same people, which meant conversation flowed, so I felt increasingly more comfortable throughout the treatment. I was quite nervous even though I have had my eyebrows and eye liner tattooed before, but Tamara just took all the nerves away as we chatted in the relaxing environment of the barn. The first time I had this treatment was not with Tamara, so we looked at my current tattooed eyebrows and to my surprise were not even in the slightest.

Tamara took the time to measure out and draw on eyebrows to suit my personal preference and I was involved in the decision making the whole time. When we finally agreed, I laid down on the couch and the

local anaethestic was applied and Tamara told me exactly what was happening during the whole procedure. It was a little uncomfortable for a couple of minutes, then in a way quite relaxing. The eyeliner was tattooed after the eyebrows were finished. It can feel strange having your eyes closed whilst having the eyeliner tattooed but other than that I never felt any discomfort. This particular procedure is called semi permanent makeup, however the BodyBarn offer a number of different services and to find out what other treatments are available please visit their website (www.bodybarn.com).

With many of these professional services pre and post care is highly important and you have to fill in a consultation form and apply a patch test beforehand. The after care is very straight forward, as Tamara explains to make sure you keep the area clean and dry. After about a week mine healed over. In total I think I spent about 3 hours with Tamara from start to finish and then in around 4-6 weeks, I will need to go back for a touch up! I would never go anywhere else now, I love my eyebrows and I did not realise how much of a big part of your facial look they are!

Tamara commented after the treatment “You were one of the first to try the new Goldeneye Hydro pigments range. I did two techniques, firstly Microblade to achieve the crisp eye strokes then some soft shading

with a traditional machine for depth and a 3D effect. I used the pigment Goldeneye and from the pictures you can really see how out of alignment your previous brows were. What a difference the new shape has made!”

“The reason your previous eyebrows were not even is due to the muscle above one eye engages more actively at times, and therefore this means that sometimes your brows will look uneven no matter what you do. As I say that is simply due to the fact your muscle

is more active on one side, so to achieve even eyebrows I have tried to compensate to give a more symmetrical appearance. Now when they move in your natural facial expressions they look more even than before” she continued.

Are you interested in finding out more about this semi permanent makeup treatment or any other services offered? If so, please contact The BodyBarn by telephone using the following number 01264 810004 or by email [email protected] alternatively you could use the contact form on their website www.bodybarn.com. My first DiscoI was off to my first disco at the local village hall,

Thirteen years old, and I was giving it my ‘all’

I’d washed my hair with Dettol to get rid of all my frizz,

Hair plastered to my head; I knew I really looked the biz,

I added a Ben Sherman shirt and Clarkes Commando shoes,

Dressed up to the nines; I knew I couldn’t really lose

Inside, a boy soon noticed me; ‘twas more than just a glance,

I knew it! In a moment he would ask me for a dance,

He walked across the dance floor; and my heart filled with pure joy,

Until he said “Are you a girl, ‘cos my mate reckons you’re a boy...”

“Oh to be in England now that spring is here!” The poet Robert Browning certainly knew what he was talking about when he wrote these few immortal words. There is nothing quite like a warm sunny spring day to suddenly bring our gardens back to life. The drab days of winter disappear in an instance as the abundance of spring flowering shrubs burst into a kaleidoscope of yellows, reds, pink and white. Spring is the season that probably inspires us the most and treating

ourselves to some bright spring shrubs is just the tonic and motivation we need to get back into the great outdoors.

One of the earliest flowering shrubs is the flowering or ornamental currant Ribes. From its stark bare branches little pinnacles of delicate pink flowers appear before the leaf. It is quick growing and tolerates most aspects. The Forsythia, or if you prefer its rather charming common name, Golden Bells, is another early spring shrub with its wonderful clusters of the brightest yellow flowers.

Another popular early spring shrub is the Spirea, especially the variety ‘Bridal Wreath’, which bears clouds of tiny white flowers that appear after the lime coloured leaves have burst their buds. Be careful not to mix up the spring and summer varieties, with the general rule of thumb being the spring shrubs are white and the summer shrubs pink.

One little tip for spring flowering shrubs, if you need to do any pruning

this has to be done as soon after flowering as possible to ensure the shrub has plenty of time to grow, as flowering the following spring is on the new growth.

Small steps, big changesTrying to reach a goal whether it be health and wellness, career or personal life can seem impossible, especially if the goal is a large one, such as to lose a lot of weight or to make a major change or achievement in your life.

Because the desires that people have, to be slim or happy, or somehow live a different life, seem so unattainable, there seems no point in starting or even bothering to try, because the changes required seem too great!

This ‘all or nothing’ approach means that if you can’t do everything then there’s no point doing anything. This is especially true with health and fitness and weight loss. There is a misconception that one has to spend hours in the gym training and a lifetime eating salads, and therefore if you can’t do, or don’t want to do that, then there is no point doing anything.

However, the smallest of steps can add up to quite a big change over a period of time, so here are some tips that can be incorporated into daily life without major difficulty. Of course, they have to become part of your lifestyle and viewed as permanent, as opposed to short-term measures. If you wonder why your health or your weight are not as you would wish, then look at people you know who are fit, well and not carrying excess body fat and you will notice that they very often have the habits below.

• Walk to work, school or wherever possible.• Get a pedometer and aim for 10,000 steps a day.• Park further away when driving whenever you can.• Take a family walk after dinner.• Get off the bus a stop early and walk.• Work around the house and avoid laboursaving devices.• Join an exercise group.• Walk faster when out and about.• Get out of the office during lunch hour.• Take a walk or do desk exercises instead of a cigarette or

coffee break.• Ask a friend to exercise with you.• Exercise with a DVD if the weather is bad.• Dance to music.• Walk briskly when shopping.• Do sit-ups in front of the TV.• Take small trips on foot to get your body moving.• Choose activities you enjoy and you’ll be more likely to stick

with them.• Stretch before bed to give you more energy when you wake.• Take the long way round when moving about the workplace.• Explore new physical activities.• Vary your activities, for interest and to broaden the range of

benefits.• Walk to a co-worker’s desk instead of emailing or calling

them.• Take stairs instead of the escalator.• Try to do something instead of sitting around.• Set an alarm to remind you to move if you are at a desk all

day.• Do more gardening.• Choose an activity that fits into your daily life.• Don’t buy ‘low fat’ or ‘diet’ products – they are usually full of

sugar.• Drink water before a meal.• Eat leaner red meat and poultry.• Eat half your dessert.• Avoid food portions larger than your fist.• Increase the fibre in your diet by having five servings of fruit

and vegetables.• If you have to drink fizzy drinks, replace with diet versions.• Eat off smaller plates.• Don’t eat late at night.• Don’t have second helpings.• Grill, steam or bake instead of frying.• Replace half an hour of TV with a walk instead.• Don’t skip meals.• Eat more celery/raw vegetable sticks as snacks.• Keep to a regular eating schedule.

• Choose fruit for dessert.• Consume alcoholic beverages in moderation, if at all.• Conduct a diary of your meal/snack and physical activity

patterns.• Share the entrée/dessert with a friend.• Grill fruits or vegetables.• Eat before food shopping.• Make a food list before you shop and avoid the confectionery

aisles.• Flavour foods with herbs, spices and other low fat seasonings.• Eat before you get too hungry.• Don’t skip breakfast.• Stop eating when you are full.• When eating out, choose a small or medium portion and eat it

very slowly.• If main dishes are too big, choose an appetizer or a side dish

instead.• Ask for salad dressing “on the side”.• Only eat sweet foods in small amounts and after you’ve eaten

something healthy.• Drink lots of water.• Reward and acknowledge your efforts.

Give yourself the goal of making a set number of changes each week and work on sustaining those changes so that they become habit. It pays to check your lifestyle every so often as bad habits can creep in slowly and you only notice when the effects are showing on your body.

Even the smallest of changes in lifestyle can all add up. Taken in isolation they may not make much difference but added together they can totally change your health, wellness and fitness for the better.

Out and About in SpringWith imminent arrival of Spring it may be time to blow out the cobwebs with a stroll around the town or the park with family or friends. This may sound simple or taken for granted to most of us but those with restricting mobility problems, this simple joy may feel like a burden to those that it affects. Not being able to keep up or having to stop to catch a breath are both common reason our customers come to us for advice on what help is available to them. More often than not, sons or daughters looking for mum or dad are the first point of contact we have, starting the research or gathering information ‘to plant the seed’ on the wide range that is available to purchase from Hampshire Mobility Services.

The simple starting point could just be a walking stick to provide a more little confidence when walking, traditional wooden canes to patterned sticks, short version and tall options, we can measure the user for the correct height to ensure the best fit and we may be able to colour co-ordinate with an outfit for that special day! More popular recently is to have the ferrule (the rubber tip on the end) exchanged for a Tri-tip to provide more stability when walking.

Tri-Walker (3 wheels) are a help around the home, some with a tray and basket and all with a bag, the tri is a helpful aid to prevent falls while carrying items. Rollators (4 wheeled walkers) are the perfect aid for help around the town, shops or the trip to the hairdressers, all of the range Hampshire Mobility offer have the advantage of a seat for when a short break is needed. Height adjustable handles on both the Tri and the Rollator means we can assess and adjust to the correct height for correct use and confidence. Fakeaway: Spiced butter burgers Why eat out when you can make THE most delicious offerings in the comfort of your own home?! There’s nothing better than a moist, juicy, tender burger, and there’s one method that ensures a mouth-watering result, every time, which is putting a small slab of flavoured butter in the centre of the raw burger. This melts through the meat as the burger cooks, making it oh-so-tender. Don’t believe me? Go on, try it, I promise you won’t regret it.

The quantities below will make 4 burgers.

You will need:500g mince beef (must be at least 20% fat)

1 red onion, finely diced

1 clove garlic, crushed

1 teaspoon ginger, finely minced

1 heaped teaspoon English mustard

1 teaspoon garam masala

60g room temperature butter, mashed with 2 teaspoons garam masala

4 burger buns

Optional extras:5cm section of cucumber, grated & squeezed to remove excess liquid

3 heaped tablespoons of yogurt

1 red pepper, cut into long slices

3 shallots, cut into slices

Method:1. In a bowl, put the beef, red onion, garlic, ginger,

mustard and 1 teaspoon of garam masala. Knead the mixture for 5 minutes, cover with cling film and put it into the fridge

2. In a separate bowl, mash together butter and 2 teaspoons of garam masala. Divide the butter into 4 equal portions, and shape into flat discs (roughly 3cm round). Put these discs into the fridge to chill for 30 minutes.

3. Once they have chilled, take both the discs and the beef mixture out of the fridge. Divide the beef into 4 equal portions, and shape

them into patties.

4. Slide one disc into the centre of each patty, making sure that the butter is completely encased in the meat.

5. Cook the burgers under a hot grill, turning them three times during the cooking (so that each side of the burger faces the heat 2 times). You will notice the butter melting through the burgers, leaving them moist and tender. Once the meat is cooked all the way through, the burgers are ready.

6. Optional extras: I like to serve these burgers with a raita sauce (made by combining the cucumber and yogurt) and topping them with some softened shallots and cooked pepper. To do this, simply put 1 teaspoon of oil (I like olive oil for this) and the pepper and shallot slices into a hot frying pan. Keeping the heat fairly high, cook the vegetables for roughly 5 minutes, moving them with a spatula so that they don’t stick/burn. Assemble by spreading the buns with the raita, then put the burger on, topped with the vegetables.

If you own a flat or apartment you will, except in exceptional circumstances, be a leaseholder. When a lease is granted it will be for a fixed term. You may be lucky and have a lease term of 999 years but more often these days the term granted is around 125 years, which may seem like a long time but actually could affect the value of your property well before the lease is due to run out. The reason that your flat may become a less attractive proposition is that a prospective purchaser will be mindful of the fact that the lease will expire with the passage of time. Most purchasers rely on mortgage finance and in turn most lenders require a minimum length of lease; some will not lend on a lease of 70 years or less. Others require a minimum number of years left to run in addition to the length of the mortgage term. For example if you want to take out a 25 year mortgage, the lender might require say 50 years left on the lease after the mortgage term of 25 years meaning you need a lease with a minimum of 75 years remaining at the outset. However the news is not all bad and qualifying owners of residential flats can request that their Landlord grant an extension of a further 90 years at a peppercorn rent in addition to whatever length of lease is left by virtue of Leasehold Reform Housing and Urban Development Act 1993 (The Act). In broad terms in order to qualify:• The lease must have been for a term of at least 21 years

when originally granted• The leaseholder must have owned the property for at least

two yearsFull details of the criteria are set out in the legislation. You will have to pay a premium (price) to the Landlord in order to obtain an extension under The Act and you should consider engaging a surveyor to assist in the valuation process at an early stage. It is worth bearing in mind that the premium will become more expensive as soon as the lease term falls below 80 years. When relying on The Act there is a formal procedure to follow in terms of the Notice required and timescales to comply with

in order for your request to be valid. The detail of this is beyond the scope of this article and it would be wise for you to consult with a solicitor at the outset to help you with the preparation and compilation of the information required to make sure that you are ready to deal with each stage of the process in accordance with the deadlines.

Although many lease extensions utilise The Act there is nothing to prevent an approach directly to your Landlord to negotiate an extension to the lease outside of The Act at any time, however in that case the length of term of the extension would have to be negotiated between the parties as would any other terms of the lease, for example rent.

If you are looking to sell your flat it may be worth having your lease checked by a solicitor before marketing the property. They can check the length of the lease and advise whether it would be desirable to obtain an extension. They can also check the lease for any other defects which may cause a problem when selling… but that as they say is another story…!

This is intended for general guidance only. In all cases specific advice should be sought.

Bells Solicitors can offer advice in Private Client, Property and Matrimonial Matters. The office opens five days a week Monday – Friday 9am – 5pm (for Wills and Probate a Saturday appointment between 9am – 12pm can be arranged by prior appointment only) and home and hospital appointments can be arranged where appropriate. If you require more advice regarding Lease extensions, why not arrange a consultation? Our professional service is right on your doorstep.

This month’s walk involves a foray beyond the Test Valley and is longer than many of the earlier

outings from this selection. It mixes parts of the Monarch Way, Alan King Way and Pilgrims Trail. The suggested start location is beside the Brushmakers Arms, Shoe Lane, Upham, SO32 1JJ. Parking is recommended near the village pond just 200 metres from the local pub.

The walk covers approximately 6 miles across the Downs, not hard walking, but the finish has a small sting in the tail. It should take the active walker about 2 hours to complete.

Heading away from the pond up the lane, past the church (photo 1), we turn right at the junction and in another 100 metres turn left over a stile (photo 2) with arrows offering us a route on the Monarch Way. Taking a line across this field to the next stile, we cross this and take the left hand option tracing the path round the edge of the field that pushes us right and slightly downhill to a path that divides off at the bottom. This section has been worn away by rain erosion and leads us to a gate and a

downhill stretch through the next field with a panoramic view of the way ahead.

Keep to the right in this field as the next swing gate appears in the corner to take us over a stile then uphill towards a tree and fence line. At the top we cross another stile and have 3 options for directions, our route now takes us left along the hedge and eventually heading to Sweet Briar Cottage beside a gate and the beginning of a metalled section of road. After about 400 metres this road veers sharply to the left, at which point we need to turn right at the corner of

Popes Lane (photo 3) and down a good quality farm track.

Just as we are settling into a pleasant routine on this chalk based track we have to take the first and only right hand footpath, signposted through the trees after about 300 metres. This takes us between close cropped trees, crosses a forest access trail and emerges at a field with a set of wooden stables at the far side. We must aim to follow the path just to the left of this fence to the left of their boundary line, crossing two consecutive stiles on the way.

Once out on the road, Red Lane, we turn left heading up the lane, with the option of taking the parallel path just inside the tree line on the left. This road continues for over a kilometre before transferring at a gate to a gravel trail (photo 4); just to the right appears a path offering the Monarch Way as well as private access to Roughway Farm and an aircraft grass landing strip.

There now follows an extended walk on this

gravel path that sometimes switches to stone and later on to grass or mud. It climbs gently for almost 2 kilometres before dropping onto a road (Baybridge Lane), where we turn right for a short distance before sweeping right again into a well marked and well used footpath. From here we follow the main path to the right after some 600 metres, past Woodstock Down Farm and left, still following the footpath beside some horse gallops and down onto a new road.

The signpost ahead states 1.5 miles to Upham (photo 5), but while we turn right as the arrow requires, the distance left is considerably less than suggested although the final sting comes in the fairly testing climb back up into Upham village, straight past the recreation ground and down the road, leaving the Brushmakers Arms on your right and retrieving the transport.

Essential items for walking anytime:

• High visibility clothing, vest or sash are ideal. Be seen at all times.

• Robust footwear, walking boots, good sturdy trainers – normal house shoes not recommended.

• A torch (for gloomy days), mobile phone and a whistle (personal protection and safety).

• For dog walkers – take a supply of poop scoop bags.

Having suffered for a number of years with ligament damage in my shoulder, I came across Dr Yan Li’s advert in my local magazine and decided to seek her advice.

She told me that she could cure my problem, but as it was a long term injury, I would need treatment for approximately 2 months. This has now been completed and sure enough my shoulder is pain free, particularly at night when it was a problem.

Dr Yan is very easy to talk to and explained what she was doing for me which I found very helpful. During the treatments she made me feel like we were friends who had known each other for a long time which was very reassuring.

COMPETITION • COMPETITION • COMPETITIONJoin the revolution as Northern

Ballet’s critically acclaimed

1984 arrives in Southampton

As one man risks everything to fall in love, join Northern Ballet in Southampton for Jonathan Watkins’ critically acclaimed 1984. ‘The ballet equivalent of a page turner’ (The Stage), Northern Ballet is bringing this cult-classic to life for six performances only at the Mayflower Theatre from 4 – 7 May 2016.

In Northern Ballet’s 1984, Ministry of Truth worker Winston Smith lives in a world of absolute conformity, his every action scrutinised by Big Brother. Whilst outwardly conforming to Party doctrine, he is secretly disillusioned, illegally documenting his thoughts in a diary. When one day he receives a love note from Julia, the pair begin an illicit affair, leading a dangerous double life putting physical desire above Party discipline. As their romance develops and they prepare for an act of political rebellion, Winston and Julia discover that Big Brother is always watching and no one can be trusted; least of all themselves.

Choreographed by Jonathan Watkins, whose recent credits include Kes for Sheffield Crucible Theatre, Northern Ballet’s 1984 is the first full-length ballet adaptation of George Orwell’s renowned novel. The production had its World Première in September 2015, and is set to an original score by Tony nominated Composer Alex Baranowski, who recently worked with Mercury Prize winning band The xx. The creative team also includes Set and Costume Designer Simon Daw, Lighting Designer Chris Davey, Video Designer Andrzej Goulding and Dramaturg Ruth Little.

Jonathan Watkins said: ‘George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four has been a constant inspiration to me since I first read it at 15. It is a powerful and thought-provoking allegory that now, more than ever, has resonance with the times in which we are living.’

Northern Ballet’s Artistic Director, David Nixon OBE, said: ‘This production challenges the idea of what stories can be told through dance and the dramatic talent of our dancers will draw the audience into the very core of this literary masterpiece.’

Northern Ballet will also perform its new children’s ballet Tortoise & the Hare at the Mayflower Theatre, Southampton on 6 May 2016 (performances at 12noon and 2pm).

Tickets for Northern Ballet’s 1984 (Wednesday 4 – Saturday 7 May 2016) are on sale from Mayflower Theatre Box Office tel: 02380 711811 or online at mayflower.org.uk. Ovation Restaurant bookings: 02380 711833.

8 pairs of tickets to 1984 on Wednesday 4 May have kindly been donated. Answer the following question for a chance of winning: Who does Winston fall in love with?Entries should be emailed to: [email protected](marking the email ‘1984 Competition’) to be received no later than 25th April. The winner will be notified by 29th April 2016. Only one entry per household.

MOTORISED BL INDS REMOTE CONTROL

Take the new motorised blinds from The Great Shutter Co.. These blinds have some great advantages in that they are motorised and work off a simple remote control. For those with mobility or dexterity issues these can be great solution as the remote buttons are easy to use. If you have young children the lack of cords also removes any risk of strangulation. On the other hand you may just simply like the idea of not having to get up to close or open a blind - who doesn’t just want to lie in bed in the morning and checkout what the day has in store whilst still wrapped up warm in their duvet.

The great thing about technology is that it keeps moving forward and that benefits us all.

The blinds need NO hardwiring as they come with a re-chargeable battery in the head casing which is simply recharged by charging via a charging cable like you would a mobile. For larger blinds a hardwired solution may be a better solution and in some cases these can be integrated with home automation system. A free home design consultation is a great way to see what available options are.

The Great Shutter Co. offer motorised pleated, rollers, roman, venetians as well as some fancier blinds that are great for controlling privacy and light. With motorisation
