The oversight is not necessarily inten-tional. Or,, at least, that is the way Lee Dieter feels. "The primary job of a man who is running a golf course," he says, "is to keep the course in the best possi-ble playing condition. Everything else is secondary. That includes the training of apprentice supts. I have seen, or I know of good supervisory training programs that have been started, but too often they have been junked and not picked up again because the supt. has been put under so much pressure in keeping the course in shape that he has had to give up on them. This is where the system breaks down."

Which leads to the question: Is there any solution to the problem of training an apprentice to handle the most cru-cial job he is going to have to contend with when he becomes a head supt.?

Lee Dieter suggests this answer: When an apprentice proves he is ready for su-pervisory responsibility, why not assign three or four or five men to him and make him completely accountable for the work they perform? If the apprentice shows that he is incapable of handling men, maybe that is the time for him to get out of the turf management business altogether.

Ladies PGA Golf School to be Held in Ohio

The sixth LPGA National Golf School will be held July 5-9 at Bowling Green State University, Howling Green, O. Go-chairmen are Shirley Spork and Penny Boussoulas.

The school staff will include LPGA members Patty Berg, Peggy Kirk Bell, Kathy Cornelius, Sally Doyle. Shirley En-glehom,. Ellen Griffin, Marlene Hagge, Ruth Jessen, Jo Ann Prentice, Kathy Whit-worth, Amie Amiz'ch, and Irene Bretzlaff.

Morning and afternoon sessions will cov-er techniques of giving individual instruc-tion, fundamentals of group teaching along with the cause and correction of errors. Evening sessions will include panel dis-cussions, lectures on club care, merchan-dising, equipment selection, testing and evaluation methods and visual aids.

A golf tournament for all the school participants will be held the final clay. The Barbara Botvig award will be pre-sented to the winner. The school will use Bowling Green State's new course, its practice fields, the university's indoor fa-cilities and the Bowling Green GC course.

Champagne Tony Lema will play the role of sportscaster for the first time on finishing holes of the round of champions on National Golf Day, Mon., May 31. The match will be telecast over NBC-TV from 5 to 6 p.m. EDST. Lema will join Chick Hearn and Jim Simpson in calling the shots during the 18-hole match.

The Golf Day match will be between the 1964 U. S. Open champion, Ken Ven-turi, and last year's PGA winner, Bobby Nichols. If Venturi is unable to play due to his recent difficulties caused by a cir-culatory ailment, his place will be taken by Julius Boros, 1963 Open champion. As of May 1, Venturi intended to play.

to residents of the city. The Oakland (Calif.) city council and

board of port commissioners have given approval to a 50-year lease for a new municipal golf course near the metropoli-tan airport . . . The agreement calls for the port to finance construction of the 6,531-yard course by issuing $800,000 in certificates of indebtedness . . . The port would lease the course to the city for 50 years, with the city to pay off construction costs at the rate of $60,000 a year over a 20-year period . . . The money would be paid out of golf revenue.

Plans are being made for a clubhouse enlargement and renovation of the Hill Crest CC,. Vernon, Tex. . . . A 9-hole course will be built near Jesup, la. if a local group is able to secure the necessary financing from the FHA . . . Butler's GC in McKeesport, Pa. has added an addition-al nine holes to bring the total to 27 ac-cording to Pro Tom Jackson, who is op-erating his shop out of a new clubhouse.
