  • 2007–2008 Report to Donors

It is possible. We see it everyday. We see the difference your unwavering support can make. With your help, there is no limit to what we can achieve. With your help, we can offer hope, pass on knowledge, give comfort to those in their greatest time of need. We can break new ground in research, and raise patient care to new heights.

At the bedside, in the research lab, within the walls of our hospital and beyond, your generosity is helping us save lives.

    a message from the ceos

No two Sunnybrook donors are the same.

Whether you showed your appreciation for the exceptional care you or a loved one received; attended an event for a cause that was important to you; entrusted Sunnybrook with a legacy for health care; or were touched simply by hearing a patient’s story – we each have our own reasons to give.

There is, however, a common thread throughout. You decided to have a profound impact on the lives of others.

Together, the contributions of Sunnybrook’s donors are helping to grow the facilities in which we care for the most critically ill in the country; advance the research that will help find a cure for our most devastating diseases, such as dementia and cancer; and educate the minds of future health care profes-sionals who will care for our changing population.

We must prepare for the health care challenges before us. The aging “baby boomer” generation, ever-increasing complexity of care, and a growing population will place new demands on the health care system. With your support, Sunnybrook is

leading in the evolution of health care by anticipating the changing needs of our system through innovative research that is having an impact on patient lives today. Indeed, we are inventing the future of health care. And, we are doing so only because we have donors by our side, providing the funding that is integral to our success.

Countless stories unfold every day at Sunnybrook for our patients and the heroic staff who restore their lives and health. The stories of donors like you are equally diverse and wonderful – the impact of your giving ensures that we can be there for our patients and their families at the most critical times in their lives.

Last year was a record-breaking year in fundraising for us. The results of your generosity are clearly visible throughout Sunnybrook as we move into our biggest fundraising year yet. Please spend some time with this report and learn how you and other donors are saving the lives of our patients. You will be inspired.

On behalf of all who turn to Sunnybrook for care, thank you for making a difference, when it matters most.

a message from our volunteer leadership

This has been another tremendous year of growth for Sunnybrook. As volunteers of the Foundation, we are proud of the increasing number of supporters we attract each year. Many of our donors have experienced the care offered at Sunnybrook in some way and want to show their appreciation by giving back. Their contributions are a testament to the innovative, lifesaving care offered at Sunnybrook and the important role we play in the delivery of health care in Ontario.

Our ever-growing community of donors and volunteers made this year our most successful one to date. Together we raised $63.7 million. By the time you read this report we will have far surpassed the two-thirds marker of our $300 million campaign.

We take very seriously the trust of our donors, and, with a cost-per-dollar-raised of 10.9 per cent, we are transparent, accountable and efficient at ensuring funding goes to the initiatives in which you invest.

Highlights from the past year include:

    • EdmondandGloriaOdettemadeavisionaryinvestment in Sunnybrook’s cancer care program, the second largest cancer program in Canada, and were honoured through the renaming of the Odette Cancer Centre;

    • TheDanFamilymadethelargestsingledonationin the history of our Women & Babies program, benefiting our smallest patients and their moms. This gift was honoured by naming the Aubrey & Marla Dan Program for High Risk Mothers & Babies;

Sunnybrook’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit provides care for one in five infants in Ontario with serious illness or extreme prematurity. Sunnybrook is home to the second largest high-risk birthing centre in Ontario and provides care for 20 per cent of all infants in the province weighing less than three pounds.

give even the most vulnerable a healthy start to lifeSixteen years ago, Marla Dan gave birth to her first child, Alyse, two months early. Alyse spent the first few months of her life in the Women & Babies program’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) being cared for by a team of doctors and nurses as her delicate organs developed.

“Like any first-time parents, my husband, Aubrey, and I were nervous and excited for what the future had in store for us,” says Marla. “At 29 weeks I attended a regular prenatal appointment and learned that not only was my pregnancy high-risk, I needed to deliver as soon as possible. We delivered two days after the appointment.”

“There were difficult days, but the staff did everything they could to help us with those risks. We’ll never forget how tirelessly they worked, and not in the most ideal surround-ings,” says Marla. “As a mother, your natural instinct is to take over, do whatever you can for your child. But we always knew that Alyse was in the best hands.”

In 2007, the Dans learned of the plans to build a new two-floor facility for the Women & Babies program at Sunnybrook’s Bayview Avenue campus. They revisited the NICU which they had not been to since Alyse was born and were taken aback that the facility had barely changed.

Aubrey and Marla Dan have made an unprecedented $8 million gift to the Women & Babies program. Their gift will be honoured by naming the Aubrey & Marla Dan Program for High Risk Mothers & Babies at Sunnybrook. Women and babies will be referred to the program when their medical circumstances demand the best expertise in high-risk obstetrics and neonatal care.

“Marla and I have always believed that by supporting women, children and health care you are supporting future generations,” says Aubrey. “We are grateful to Sunnybrook for helping Alyse and we’re delighted to lend our financial support and our name to an exceptional program staffed by world-class health care providers.”

“ When we walked into one of the packed rooms in the NICU and saw about 12 incubators with tiny premature babies in each, our hearts went out to the parents of those little ones, and we knew we wanted to help,” says Marla.

build a new home with resolve and compassion

Gulshan and Pyarali G. Nanji were born in Uganda. In 1972, they settled in Canada after the regime of the dictator Idi Amin stripped them of their assets and declared them stateless refugees.

“When my family settled in Canada we had to rebuild everything from the ground up,” says Mr. Nanji, a proud member of Toronto’s Ismaili community. “I’ve always been grateful to the Canadian government for the new opportunities it gave my family and vowed that when my family was re-established we would give back to our community.”

“We attribute our success to the opportu-nities offered to us by our adopted country,” says Mr. Nanji. “We are delighted to support Sunnybrook in any way we can. Giving back to a community, which has given so much to us, is just the right thing to do.”

Following an earlier lead gift to the Emergency Department, the Nanjis made a generous gift to the M-Wing Capital Expansion, which will accommodate the Women & Babies program, the

Breast Cancer Research Centre and the expanded Sunnybrook Research Institute. In recognition of their heartfelt contribution to Sunnybrook, the first floor of M-Wing will be renamed the Pyarali & Gulshan Nanji Ambulatory Centre. The Nanjis support the M-Wing Expansion because the Women & Babies program matters to them.

“The health care system is accessible to everyone in Canada and it’s important for everyone who has benefited to give back,” says Mr. Nanji. “My wife and I continue to support Sunnybrook because we know our donations are helping lives beyond the doors of the hospital.”

“ Babies are the future leaders of this country,” says Mrs. Nanji. “It gives us great satisfaction to support and nurture their early growth and development through our support of the Women & Babies program.”

The legacy of Gloria Odette will continue at Sunnybrook’s Odette Cancer Centre, Canada’s second largest cancer centre. The centre has over a quarter of a million patient visits annually and cares for 10,000 new patients each year.

transform the lives of others through a legacy of compassionIn August of 2008, Sunnybrook lost a dear and wonderful friend. It is with much sadness that we mourn the passing of Gloria Odette, a longtime supporter of the hospital and a cherished member of our community.

Gloria was the anchor of the Odette family, whose generous support has transformed Sunnybrook for almost a quarter of a century.

“Gloria gave from the heart, and always cared about making a difference – for her family and friends, for the patients at Sunnybrook, and to the community of which she was a part,” says Kevin Goldthorp, CEO of Sunnybrook Foundation. “She was an incredible person and a dedicated leader, and she will be greatly missed by us all.”

The beneficiaries of the Odettes’ generosity are the critically ill patients across the hospital with conditions such as aneurysms, vascular tears, orthopaedic disease, traumatic injuries and cancer. For 56 years, Gloria was the loving wife of Edmond, a behind-the-scenes community leader who has been honoured with the Order of Canada. Several buildings bear his name, including the Odette Cancer Centre which was named in 2007 to recognize the couple’s landmark contributions to the future of cancer care at Sunnybrook. Edmond and Gloria have been an instrumental part of making Sunnybrook the state-of-the-art patient care facility it is today. But their sense of caring for those around them hasn’t stopped at our doors. Through the E. and G. Odette Charitable Foundation, the couple have furthered a wide variety of causes in music, religious charities, health care, education and the arts. The Odette family’s involvement in Sunnybrook extends across the generations. One of Gloria and Edmond’s daughters, Anne Odette Kaye, supports the hospital as a member of Sunnybrook Foundation’s Board of Directors, as Chair of its Governing Council and as a member of the Breast Cancer Campaign Cabinet. The third generation is represented by their grandson, Andrew Kaye, who volunteers at Sunnybrook.

As our capital expansion unfolds, the Odettes have been and continue to be with us every step of the way, supporting Sunnybrook when it matters most and encouraging others to do the same.

turn the greatest fears into hope for the future

Like many women, Lesley Alboini has seen breast cancer cast a shadow over the lives of friends.

Moved by Dr. Shapiro’s account of her experiences fighting the disease with the help of the expert medical staff at Sunnybrook’s Odette Cancer Centre, Lesley decided she would focus her personal giving and fundraising efforts towards building Sunnybrook’s new Breast Cancer Research Centre.

“Every woman either has breast cancer or is afraid of getting breast cancer.”

Seeing how the disease can touch the lives of so many, Lesley and her husband, Vic, decided to direct their giving towards build-ing and supplying a digital mammography room at the Breast Centre, currently under construction. “We wanted to help provide women with an accurate diagnosis. Digital mammography machines let Sunnybrook

staff screen women so that early detection is possible and also monitor the health of women with breast cancer.” Early detection significantly increases the speed and effec-tiveness of treatment and subsequently the rate of survival.

Lesley Alboini follows in the significant foot-steps of her father, decorated WWII veteran, Lieut. J. Ross LeMesurier. Injured on the battlefield, Ross returned to Canada and re-ceived specialized treatment at Sunnybrook, the country’s largest veterans’ care facility. The promise shown throughout his military service carried through into civilian life as Ross advocated for veterans as a member of Sunnybrook’s hospital and foundation boards, and Chair of the Veterans’ Advisory Committee. Today Lesley, who champions a cause close to her own heart, continues in her family’s history of support.

“It’s great to be involved with a hospital that does so much good for so many people every day.”

Sunnybrook has been greatly enriched by this family’s enduring support of two of our key areas of focus, veterans’ care and cancer research and treatment. The new Breast Cancer Research Centre that we are building, with Lesley and Vic’s help, will give women the best chance to fight and beat this disease.

Having witnessed the impact of this disease on those close to her, and inspired by Dr. Marla Shapiro’s book Life in Balance, the new vice chair of the board of Sunnybrook Foundation was spurred to help make a difference.

summon the courage and determination to fight this fight for everyoneWhen Jean Loeffelhardt was diagnosed in 2007 with advanced-stage colorectal cancer, the opinions of the experts she consulted were unanimous: her best chance of survival lay with Dr. Andy Smith, an internationally renowned oncologist at Sunnybrook. Jean immediately began an aggressive treatment regimen at Sunnybrook and was thoroughly impressed by the professionalism of Dr. Smith and the other doctors and nurses in her care team.

“I knew that, as a team, we were working toward a common goal.” The treatment Jean received at Sunnybrook brought her cancer into remission, buying her precious time before her cancer eventually recurred.

“I am an American, and I could have gone to the US for treatment. I had a choice about where I wanted to be treated, and

for the quickest, most aggressive and advanced care, I chose Sunnybrook.”

Jean was no stranger to cancer even before her diagnosis – her mother and an aunt had passed away from breast and ovarian cancer, respectively. Now, as she continues to fight her battle, she refuses to let the disease win. Jean’s current treatment regimen is allowing her to continue living her active life – one that is filled with work, friends and family.

For Jean, her choice to donate to the Chair in Surgical Oncology was personal – her gift supports the research that is making such a difference in her life. “I don’t think you donate until you truly understand what it means for people”, says Jean, who in addition to donating to Sunnybrook Foundation has given generously of her time volunteering in Africa. She credits Sunnybrook Foundation for supporting research and clinical treat-ment, which is helping patients like her live longer, more productive lives.

Jean has seen and continues to see first-hand how Sunnybrook’s advanced care helps patients beat their cancer. She is optimistic that by working together, we can find a cure.

“ As a patient, I felt empowered,” says Jean. “I was given the perfect combination of technical information I needed to fully participate in my treatment, mixed with the right amount of human compassion.”

In order to accommodate projected volume increases we are upgrading our facilities to ensure we can offer the best care and treatment to our patients.

continue the work of those who have come before us

The Wright family has produced three generations of orthopaedic surgeons: Dr. C. Stewart Wright, Dr. Charles S. Wright, and brothers Dr. Paul H. Wright and Dr. Stewart Wright. All four have made significant contributions to the field of ortho-paedic surgery and the world-renowned stature of the Holland Orthopaedic & Arthritic Centre.

In 1949, Dr. C. Stewart Wright obtained a Charter for a 200-bed Orthopaedic & Arthritic Hospital to offer treatment and care to patients with bone and joint diseases. However, the fulfillment of his dream was curtailed by his sudden death.

His son, Dr. Charles S. Wright, continued to make the dream a reality and, along with Dr. J. E. Bateman, opened the 14-bed Orthopaedic & Arthritic Hospital in down-town Toronto in 1955.

“Both my sons, Stewart and Paul, grew up with a tremendous pride in their father and grandfather and chose to follow similar career paths,” says Mrs. Jean Wright Kilpatrick, widow of the late Dr. Charles S. Wright and a founder of the centre’s Auxiliary and Gift Shop.

“It’s a privilege to know that my family has had the opportunity to affect the lives of so

many patients through three generations of Wright orthopaedic surgeons,” says Dr. Stewart Wright. “My wife, Marilyn, was a passionate orthopaedic nurse and now tirelessly supports the fundraising efforts of the centre by volunteering at Sunnybrook Foundation, where she is a member of Governing Council and a past board member.”

“The centre has blossomed through the hard work of the founders and the recruit-ment of excellent staff with expertise in a spectrum of areas within orthopaedics,” says Dr. Stewart Wright. “Between both campuses there is a very diverse group of surgeons involved in clinical work, teaching and research.”

“It has been our pleasure to support the centre,” says Dr. Stewart Wright. “We are happy to give back to the centre that has given our family so much satisfaction over the years knowing that our patients are better off because they were treated here.”

In recognition of a lifetime of clinical, volunteer and financial contributions by the Wrights to the Holland Centre, the lobby of the building was named the Wright Family Atrium.

strengthen the heart of lifesaving care

Lou Pagnutti, chairman and CEO of Ernst & Young LLP, and his wife, Jennifer, firmly believe that you do what you can, when you can.

Over the past two years, the Pagnuttis have become great friends and supporters of Sunnybrook. Lou serves as a member of Sunnybrook Foundation’s board of directors and is a member of the audit and finance committee and the Schulich Heart Centre Campaign Portfolio. Jennifer has been an organizing committee member of our annual Sunnybrook Women’s Golf Classic.

Lou’s family has experienced a history of heart conditions, so he and Jennifer are dedicated donors to the renovation of the new Cardiac Acute Care Unit at our Schulich Heart Centre. The new unit, with 12 private rooms, will enhance the quality of continuing care with expanded patient, staff and visitor areas, and the installation of the latest technology and equipment.

“The current facility is more than 40 years old and needs to be renovated to meet the current needs of patients and staff,” says Lou. “Our decision to invest in this cause is personal because many years ago I lost both of my parents as a result of heart conditions. It makes good sense to support a cause that will provide the most advanced care for my family members and others in the community should they need it.”

“We, like all those involved in supporting Sunnybrook, take great pride in its accom-plishments,” says Lou. “We appreciate knowing that by helping Sunnybrook, we are doing something significant for the hospital, for others and for ourselves.”

“ We have a world-class hospital right in our neighbourhood,” notes Jennifer. “All of us – our family, our friends and our community – have access to a global health care leader. It’s reassuring to know that Sunnybrook is there for us.”

foster greater access to knowledge and care for patients and their loved onesWhen a close family member was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, Leif Nielsen was surprised and devastated. “Until it happens to you, you don’t think anything can go wrong,” says Leif. “When it does, it changes your world.” In the years following this experience, Leif has become a passionate champion of the Mood Disorders Program at Sunnybrook.

Thanks to Sunnybrook’s dedicated team, Leif’s loved one continues to make signifi-cant progress. And, just as important, the Nielsen family feels confident that they have access to the tools and knowledge they need to support their loved one throughout the recovery process.

Because mental illness will affect one in five Canadians, Leif feels strongly that the latestadvancements in mental health treatments should be available to all families. He also believes that increasing awareness and removing stigma are absolutely necessary.

‘When it matters most’ is a phrase that holds significant meaning for Leif. Having seen mental illness touch someone very close to him, he understands how vital it is for patients and their families to have access to the best standard of treatment when illness strikes. As a donor, Leif also recognizes the importance of seizing the opportunity to speed up research and promote healing in the future.

A monthly donor to Sunnybrook Foundation, Leif is committed to supporting advance-ments in care for those with mental illnesses. He believes that since mental health is everyone’s problem, it deserves everyone’s attention. “Can you imagine if everyone supported this cause? That would be incredibly powerful.”

“ The physicians and staff were pillars of support,” notes Leif. “They gave the very best care, but they did so much more. They extended their compassion to all of us in the family who were directly affected by the disease, guiding us as we went through the process of learning and understanding.”

take giant steps to solve the biggest medical challenges of our timeInventing the future of health care is the cornerstone of our work at Sunnybrook. Our commitment to this vision is epitomized by the Sunnybrook Research Institute (SRI), where our gifted scientists push the envelope of molecular medicine to solve our biggest health care challenges.

The innovative work of SRI senior scientist Dr. Juan Carlos Zúñiga-Pflücker and his team of researchers, credited with being the first in the world to create human T-cells from stem cells in a Petri dish, is just one example of how discoveries made at Sunnybrook are leading scientific break-throughs around the world.

In time, the ability to deliberately manufacture T-cells will enable the re-population of the immune system and strengthen patients’ ability to fend off viruses and disease. This breakthrough will provide real hope for people living with immune-attacking viruses, like HIV/AIDS and cancer patients experiencing the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation treatment.

With this tremendous goal within reach, Dr. Zúñiga-Pflücker’s project at Sunnybrook received a generous boost from the Krembil Foundation, an organization dedicated to supporting new and exciting medical research projects.

This investment will give Dr. Zúñiga-Pflücker and his team the means to continue their transformative research into the mysteries of the immune system.

“A key component of the Krembil Foundation’s mandate is to support world-class research that will make a significant difference in people’s lives,” says Mark Krembil. “Research such as Dr. Zúñiga-Pflücker’s plays a critical role in advancing the fight against diseases and we are pleased to support his work.”

“ When we find a project that has this kind of potential to further scientific knowledge and impact people’s lives, we take action to ensure that the opportunity gets the chance it deserves,” says Mark Krembil, Krembil Foundation president.

  • 22 Mary Pickett Carter enjoyed a good life, full of many loyal friends and satisfying volunteer work with a variety of charitable and cultural organizations. Naturally inquisitive, Mary had many interests and always kept up-to-date on news and current events.

It was perhaps one such news story about a young accident victim whose serious burn injuries were treated successfully at Sunnybrook that spurred Mary’s interest in the plight of burn victims. Friends fondly recall Mary’s deep empathy towards others, and believe she was no doubt touched by the experiences of those whose wounds can be so physically and psychologically debilitating.

Her support for the advances in care developed and applied by experts at the Burn centre will have a lasting positive impact for years to come.

Treatments designed at the centre have revolution-ized the care of burn patients across Ontario and beyond, and our research and clinical trials are producing innovations in how we help patients recover from the most serious burn injuries. Mary’s legacy will expand our capacity to treat and rehabili-tate burn patients at Sunnybrook; it will also afford us the means to continue to provide advice to health care professionals in over 180 hospitals across Ontario through our telemedicine hook-up.

Mary’s gift sustains pioneering research, education and clinical care that is saving lives and improving the quality of care provided to the victims of burn injuries. Although she will never meet the patients who are benefiting from her generosity, Mary has already had a profound effect on their lives.

we can devote a lifetime to helping those who need us the most

As a final act of giving in a lifetime marked by helping others, Mary chose to remember Sunnybrook in her will, and earmarked a gift to Sunnybrook’s Ross Tilley Burn Centre.

we can nurture a healthy future from the first breaths of life

“Our future is built upon our children,” says Michael Latifi, founder and president of Sofina Foods Inc.

Last year, Sofina Foods Inc. conducted an in-depth search to partner with an organization that met important community needs. After this long and thorough search, Michael and his wife, Marilena, decided their support would have the most significant impact within the Women & Babies program at Sunnybrook.

The Latifis’ contribution will support the Operative Birthing Unit in the new home for Sunnybrook’s Women & Babies program, currently under construction at the Bayview Avenue campus.

This unit will offer innovative care to mothers and babies with special assessment and care needs. In recognition of the Latifis’ gift, Sunnybrook will name one of the suites within the unit the Sofina Foods Inc. Operative Birthing Suite.

“When a child needs urgent medical care we want the best for them,” says Marilena. “It’s important for families to have accessible and state-of-the-art care when they need it. This new facility will help Sunnybrook’s exceptional staff provide that.”

Sofina Foods Inc. employs over 1,200 staff across Canada and the United States. The company prides itself in operating with strong family values and with a belief in giving back.

“Sofina Foods Inc. is committed to supporting the communities in which we live and work,” says Michael. “By supporting the Women & Babies program we are contributing to the well-being of our entire community.”

“ Providing babies with the very best care from their earliest breath gives them a head start in life and is beneficial to us all. Sunnybrook is definitely a leader in this work.”

As one of North America’s largest investors in, and owners and managers of, commercial real estate, Cadillac Fairview is expert at matching physical spaces with the functional needs of tenants.

So, when the company was approached to support the expansion of Sunnybrook’s Trauma, Emergency and Critical Care Centre, the connection was obvious. Admissions to the centre, which was built almost 40 years ago to deal with 20,000 patients annually, have grown steadily over the years to more than double that number. Two of every three trauma cases in Ontario are received at Sunnybrook for lifesaving care.

“Our team took a tour of Sunnybrook and felt that our company’s support would have the greatest impact in Trauma, Emergency and Critical Care,” says Peter Sharpe, president and CEO of Cadillac Fairview.

Funding came in the form of proceeds from the annual Cadillac Fairview Golf Classic, organized by employee volunteers for the past 18 years. The goal of the Classic is to raise awareness and funds for various causes in the community. For two years, Sunnybrook’s Trauma, Emergency and Critical Care Centre has been the beneficiary of the event, with another two years to come.

The proceeds will support the construction of a Staff & Nursing Station, centrally located in the heart of the new Emergent Resuscitation Zone. The new station will better enable Sunnybrook staff to respond rapidly to patient needs and do their jobs as effectively as possible.

“We are proud to support Sunnybrook,” says Mr. Sharpe. “The hospital is a world-class health care provider and it’s quite gratifying to know that we can make a difference. We certainly encourage other organizations to do the same.”

we can expand the capacity to provide lifesaving care

“ It is our sincere hope that our support will enable Sunnybrook to expand its current capacity and offer faster and safer treatment options, and in doing so, improve the comfort of patients, their families and health care providers. Ultimately, these changes will help save people’s lives.”

we can envision greater possibilities for lifesaving work

The future of medical imaging became much clearer with the formation of a partnership between Sunnybrook and Philips Healthcare. This is the first such arrangement for Sunnybrook’s Medical Imaging Department and is significant in its scope.

Through a unique, long-term partnership, Philips will provide a broad portfolio of vital imaging equipment to Sunnybrook. The new equipment will improve Sunnybrook’s diagnostic and treatment capabilities in patient treatment areas that span the spectrum of care from cancer screening to the management of musculoskeletal and cardiovascular diseases.

“Sunnybrook was a natural choice for Philips to partner with because of the wide range of clinical care, medical research and education in which it specializes,” says John Cieslowski, vice president of Philips Healthcare.

This collaboration provides Sunnybrook Medical Imaging with a roadmap for the future. Sunnybrook patients will benefit from less exposure to radiation and fewer contrast injections, resulting in efficient exam procedures, more accurate diagnoses and shorter recovery times.

Advances in medical imaging are improving radio-logists’ ability to observe and understand the nature of disease, using a more targeted and powerful gen-eration of equipment for diagnosis and intervention.

The Medical Imaging Department is no longer involved purely in disease diagnosis, but now plays a significant role in disease treatment by using minimally invasive procedures. Imaging now enables Sunnybrook radiologists to conduct a range of less invasive, highly targeted therapies that translate into better and more comfortable care for patients.

“Like the care providers at Sunnybrook, we at Philips are driven by a passion and commitment to improve health care delivery and outcomes,” notes John. “We are excited for the potential this partner-ship holds, and working together to improve care for the patients of Sunnybrook.”

“ Our advanced equipment will assist the Medical Imaging Department in the early detection and treatment of diseases – ultimately saving lives.”

On February 28, more than 13,000 music fans and Sunnybrook supporters filled the Air Canada Centre for One Night Live™, a first-of-its-kind fundraiser in support of the Women & Babies program at Sunnybrook.

Pop duo RyanDan opened the concert with a rousing performance; Jann Arden hosted the concert and entertained the audience with her incredible voice and humour; Sarah McLachlan serenaded the crowd and spoke of her own experiences as a mother; Josh Groban wowed the crowd with his operatic voice and 20-piece band; and Bryan Adams brought the crowd to its feet with hits from his 25-year recording career.

“I wanted to be a part of this concert because I’m truly inspired by the incredible care that is offered through the Women & Babies program,” says Josh Groban. “I truly believe that for children to grow up healthy, with a good education, it’s essential for them to have the best start in life.”

“I have two children and know how imperative it is to have excellent care when you need it,” says Sarah McLachlan. “It’s amazing that there will be two floors of dedicated space for moms and babies at Sunnybrook.”

Scheduled to open around Mother’s Day 2010, the new home for the Women & Babies program will offer the most nurturing environment, and provide babies with the best start for lifelong, healthy development. It will ensure Sunnybrook’s exceptional team of care providers has the most advanced and spacious surroundings in which to conduct its lifesaving work. The program currently delivers approximately 4,000 babies each year. The new facility will increase that number to 4,500, with an increasing emphasis on high-risk deliveries.

“The new facility represents a significant improve-ment to the cramped facilities in which our program currently functions,” says Dr. Jennifer Blake, Chief of Obstetrics & Gynaecology. “Everyone who supported One Night Live™ will help us to provide the best possible start to those moms and babies who require the expert care for which our program is known.”

we can turn the spirit of one special night into countless brighter days

One Night Live™ was an overwhelming success for Sunnybrook, leading to over $12 million in contributions to support an extensive expansion for our Women & Babies program. Construction at the Bayview Avenue campus is already well underway.

Sunnybrook is grateful to all of our supporters who have given so generously over the past fiscal year. Space limitations make it impossible for us to list the thousands of generous donors to Sunnybrook who made contributions of less than $500 between April 1, 2007, and March 31, 2008. Every donation to our hospital, however, is truly appreciated. We recognize and thank all donors for their support to Sunnybrook in helping us when it matters most. Together, we can save lives.
