Radiant Joy - e Gift of e Fire Element

Healthy Family | by Lance Isakov

54 YOGA LIVING Summer 2011

F OR HUNDREDS AND THOUSANDS OF YEARS THE ENERGY OF THE FIRE ELEMENT HELPED TO BRING COMMUNITIES TOGETHER. We would sit around the fire

and listen to the stories of our elders, eat, sing and dance. Fire wascentral to our lives. It offered us a space for communication, sharingtime with others and the unavoidable product of these things: joy.

These days, we have put out the flames. Fire is dangerous! For themost part we cook on electric stoves, gather around TVs and boardup fireplaces for insurance purposes. The element of fire no longerbrings us together and is no longer central to our lives. As a resultof this, we often experience loneliness, separation and sadness.

In Five Element Acupuncture, fire is the element of the summerseason, and represents the energy of warmth, connection, maturity, expansion, and relationships. In summer, the activities of springhave reached their peak. The Sun is the strongest and the days thelongest. The plants and trees are bursting to life flowering and openedto their fullest expression. The bees are buzzing, the crickets chirping, the frogs singing; the entire forest is alive and in full vibration.

Since we are part of nature, we too experience this same energy. It shows up in life as the emotion of joy and with it comes the abilityto wield romance, experience warmth, be spontaneous, passionateand compassionate. It’s our ability to feel connected to other people, the things we say, and the world around us.

Physically, fire shows up as our heart, the part of us that expressesour true spirit; the small intestine, responsible for sorting and separating the pure from the impure; the pericardium, whichguards the heart, allowing the entry and exit of appropriate energy;and the Triple Warmer, responsible for the movement and balance of heat in the body.

Spiritually, fire fuels the hearts longing for connection and intimacyand ultimately leads to the discovery of our personal destiny. Fireenergy gives us full expression of being, the ability to know our truespirit and to shine it out into the world.

When the fire element is out of balance you may feel sad, lonely, shy, doubtful, confused, anxious or depressed. You may find it hardto make friends or have intimate relationships. Some people alsofeel low energy, a lack of warmth or experience insomnia and/orheart disease.

When the fire element is in balance you have the gifts of warmth, partnership, compassion, joy, clear communication, laughter and touch.

So how do we bring this joy back? How do we rekindle a sense ofconnection with each other? We invite the fire energy of the summer into our lives and use it to rediscover who we really are.

PRACTICES TO ENCOURAGE INNER FIRE:· Address people by name

· Look for the humor in hard situations

· Invite friends over to see a silly film

· Meet someone new; it may be the start of a beautiful friendship

· Spend time with a puppy

· Take dancing lessons and enjoy feeling sexy

· Eat foods like dark chocolate, endive, spinach and watercress tohelp support fire element in the physical body

· Candle Meditation: Place a candle in a safe holder on a table orledge. Light the candle and sit in a meditative seat about arm’slength away (approximately 2 feet) from the flame. Settle your gazeon the flame. As you focus your attention on the flame, try to blinkas little as possible. Your eyes may water a bit at first, but try tokeep them open and focused on the flame. After a short while youcan close your eyes and see the candle dancing in your mind’seye. If your mind wanders, bring it back to the image of the flameand settle your attention on the fire energy within.

· Breath of Fire: is a breathing technique that powerfully stimulatesthe fire element in the body. It is very cleansing and strengtheningfor the nervous and energetic systems. Sit comfortably and easilywith a straight spine, relaxed shoulders and lifted heart center. Eyesare gently closed. On the inhalation the belly is soft, open and relaxed as it is filled with air. On the exhalation strongly pull the

navel center in and up,pressing the breath out.Continue in this manner, picking up the pace ofthe breath as your bodygets used to the movement.Eventually the breath willbe at a rapid pace of 2-3breaths per second. If youfeel lightheaded or dizzyslow the breath down andmake sure you are relaxingon the inhalation andpulling on the exhalation. If you are new to this type of breathing, buildyour experience slowly.Start with 2 rounds of 20 and over a period of a couple weeks/months worktowards adding additionalrounds and practicing forlonger periods of time.

Regrets of theDyingHealthy Family | by Bronnie Ware

YOGA LIVING Summer 2011 63

F OR MANY YEARS I WORKED IN PALLIATIVECARE.My patients were those who had gone hometo die. Some incredibly special times were shared.

I was with them for the last three to twelve weeks oftheir lives.

People grow a lot when they are faced with their ownmortality. I learnt never to underestimate someone's capacity for growth. Some changes were phenomenal. Each experienced a variety of emotions, as expected, denial, fear, anger, remorse, more denial and eventuallyacceptance. Every single patient found their peace before they departed though, every one of them.

When questioned about any regrets they had or anythingthey would do differently, common themes surfacedagain and again. Here are the most common five:

1. I wish I'd had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.

This was the most common regret of all. When peoplerealize that their life is almost over and look back clearlyon it, it is easy to see how many dreams have gone unfulfilled. Most people had not honored even a half oftheir dreams and had to die knowing that it was due tochoices they had made, or not made.

It is very important to try and honor at least some ofyour dreams along the way. From the moment that youlose your health, it is too late. Health brings a freedomvery few realize, until they no longer have it.

2. I wish I didn't work so hard.

This came from every male patient that I nursed. Theymissed their children's youth and their partner's companionship. Women also spoke of this regret. But asmost were from an older generation, many of the femalepatients had not been breadwinners. All of the men Inursed deeply regretted spending so much of their liveson the treadmill of a work existence.

By simplifying your lifestyle and making consciouschoices along the way, it is possible to not need the incomethat you think you do. And by creating more space inyour life, you become happier and more open to new opportunities, ones more suited to your new lifestyle.

3. I wish I'd had the courage to express my feelings.

Many people suppressed their feelings in order to keeppeace with others. As a result, they settled for a mediocre

existence and never becamewho they were truly capable ofbecoming. Many developed illnesses relating to the bitternessand resentment they carried asa result.

We cannot control the reactionsof others. However, although people may initially reactwhen you change the way you are by speaking honestly,in the end it raises the relationship to a whole new andhealthier level. Either that or it releases the unhealthy relationship from your life. Either way, you win.

4. I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends.

Often they would not truly realize the full benefits of oldfriends until their dying weeks and it was not always possible to track them down. Many had become so caughtup in their own lives that they had let golden friendshipsslip by over the years. There were many deep regrets aboutnot giving friendships the time and effort that they deserved.Everyone misses their friends when they are dying.

It is common for anyone in a busy lifestyle to let friendshipsslip. But when you are faced with your approachingdeath, the physical details of life fall away. People do wantto get their financial affairs in order if possible. But it isnot money or status that holds the true importance forthem. They want to get things in order more for the benefit of those they love. Usually though, they are tooill and weary to ever manage this task. It is all comesdown to love and relationships in the end. That is all thatremains in the final weeks, love and relationships.

5. I wish that I had let myself be happier.

This is a surprisingly common one. Many did not realizeuntil the end that happiness is a choice. They had stayedstuck in old patterns and habits. The so-called 'comfort'of familiarity overflowed into their emotions, as well astheir physical lives. Fear of change had them pretendingto others, and to their selves, that they were content. When deep within, they longed to laugh properly andhave silliness in their life again.

When you are on your deathbed, what others think ofyou is a long way from your mind. How wonderful to beable to let go and smile again, long before you are dying.

Life is a choice. It is YOUR life. Choose consciously, choosewisely, and choose honestly. Choose happiness.

THE GREATEST SECRET OF ALLby Marc Allen

This book is for anyone who has felt hopeless along life’s path and offers the insight that the ultimate secret to a life of fulfillment is something we need to discover for ourselves, in our own words. The author first discovered his own path while practicing yoga and meditation and changed his perspectivefrom a life of despair to a life of inner peace and triumph. His perspective takes readers on a journey towards realizing their greatest creative, emotional, and spiritual potential.Reviewer’s Note: When it comes to finding your path, there are no secrets; just truths and the laws of creation thatremain hidden from our awareness until we are ready to hear them. This book offers powerful affirmations to carry usalong the path of transformation.

THE TAO OF MOTHERHOODby Vimala McClureThis sweet offering of spiritual prose is a gift for all mothers (and fathers) looking to find more joy in parenting. The author spent months reading the Tao Te Ching and applied each passage to her spirituallife as a mother. Ancient wisdom and insights are offered in a way that relates to parents tending to newborns, toddlers, teens, and even adult children. McClure believes that our children, unknowinglyand with innocent trickery, teach us the deeper knowledge of how to be a true human being.Reviewer’s Note: This book can be used as a guide to any challenge a parent may be facing. The 81 insightfulphilosophies that are offered will guide you towards a continued understanding of how to best love your children.

COMING INTO FORMby Gil Hedley, PhD

This new book of enlightened poetic free verse explores the titled theme from several different vantagepoints. The author’s point of view is unique and distinct, yet the messages that come through the linesare accessible and universal. Reading it, it feels as much influenced by art as it does by the author’s personal experiences. The poems are woven delicately in the language of love, and the relationships of thesoul and its source are explored humbly and beautifully. As a whole, it is affirming, thought provoking andthoroughly enjoyable.Reviewer’s Note: This book of delightful and enlightened poems comes straight from the heart and speaks to the universal connectedness of the matter and spirit that lives within all of us.
