fat, thin, tall and short; quiet, loud, polite and funny.Whether or not we were working with pinpoint accuracy orreckless abandon, we all had one thing in common – wewanted to be first hand witnesses to the miracle of thehuman body

After twenty years, our teacher and guide Gil Hedley wieldsa scalpel with fluid grace. On the last day of the workshop,he deftly opened an enlarged heart and revealed the beautiful flower that is the tricuspid valve. He talked aboutthe valve and how we mistakenly think of it as a mechanicalpump. Gil explained that it’s really the relentless flow ofblood that causes the tricuspid to open and close. For amoment we stared at the heart in silence. And then Gilbegan to describe a healthy heart floating between andbeing supported by two beautiful pillows that are the lungs. He described how the heart is not only the pump we find in the center of the chest. And the brain is not only in our skull.

“The heart is the shape of the body,” he said. “The brain isthe shape of the body.”

I didn’t know what to think of this at first, until I consideredthe veins and arteries, the nerves and the spinal cord I hadheld in my hands an hour earlier. He was right. The heartand the brain were so clearly the shape of the body. And then he added, “You don’t need to choose betweenyour heart and your brain. They’re intertwined. They’rebraided together.”

After a week of looking through inner space I knew Gil was right. As I walked through life, as I struggled with decisions, I didn’t have to choose between my heart andmy brain. They were working together, if only I took the timeto pay attention to what they had to say. His final words tous were,

“We resist the life we’re given. Will you dare to embrace your power?”

Sometimes the truth can be boiled down to one simplecliché: We are all connected. This truth was evident when Istood on that lab chair and looked across to my fellow Somanauts. We’re connected by bones and blood, vesselsand organs. We’re connected by singular intent, by life anddeath. Sometimes, if we’re lucky, our connections are heartto heart. I mean the unseen heart – the mythic heart. Thedancing heart.

I believed I chose to study with Gil Hedley to learn aboutthe human body. That was the intention I set. But it onlytook a few hours in the lab with Gil to know something elsewas happening. Even before we began to dissect the visceraI knew I was learning about the heart. Not my cadaver’sheart, but my own.

Like intertwininglimbs of loversexploring one another

the tendrils of the human heartwrap and wind

embracing every nookand hidden placeof the beloved

drawing to its lovethe breathand light of lifecell by blessed cell.

Its pulsing caressesare the gentlest handsstroking skin

the softest lips kissing tenderly wherever they will.

It’s resonant voicewith constancy speaks the truth

throughout this landof quaking formlike a prophet

inciting passion for what we bearwithin us.

Yield then, yield.Yield to this one love.

Be carried away –The heart to which youbow and bendis your own.

Endless Invention—Panacea or Peril?

O UR CIVILIZATION’S A BITONE-SIDED. It chooses almost always to invent

external devices for doing things. It almost never uses those sameneeds-to-do-things as occasions forevolving human skills and awareness.Let's call that tendency "externalism."We are "externalizing" almost everyhuman ability. Handwriting, for instance, is replaced by typing. Typingis replaced by speech recognitionsoftware. As computers voice moretext, perhaps reading itself will fade. Our polar opposites would be "internalists." Such people wouldemploy relatively simple externaltools to develop very high levels ofhuman skill and awareness. Their attitude would be, gosh, don't inventa gizmo for doing that. Such a gizmowould take away all the health andstrength and growth we get out ofdoing it ourselves. Our skills bringmeaning and fulfillment to our lives. As externalists, when the horselesscarriage comes along, we clap ourhands and say, cars!--wow, cool, it'sinevitable! So long, walking! We'll gotwenty times as fast, with no effortat all! Internalists, on the other hand, would be very suspicious. Withoutwalking, they would ask, what hap-pens to the strength of our heartsand legs? Or, how would we visitwith people and trees and the riveron our way to work?Bottom line--when faced with dirtydishes, externalists will discover electricity and invent the dishwasher.

Internalists willhold seminars onefficient, artfulways to scrape and stack, and turn the act of washing

into a kind of meditation. They'llevolve somethinglike the "Japaneserinsing ceremony."

Notice where the creativity tends toreside in these two different ways. With externalists, a few people, usuallymale, have inventive epiphanies. Butthe results of these few eureka momentsare then imposed on everyone else, for better yes--but also for worse. How creative is commuting in stopand go traffic? Is time saved andused for some better purpose, or is itjust absorbed in the need to driveever longer distances? Is choosing towalk any longer even possible? For internalists, alternatively, theemphasis is on developing, aroundsimple tools, systems of human skillsthat can be taught and evolved overgenerations. Everyone who practicesthese is enriched by them. As skillspass from older to younger, manymany people contribute to them.Whole communities might be designed,in this culture, just so that peoplecould always walk to work. Typewritingmight exist, but handwriting wouldbe prized above it.But hold on, you say. Those internalistswill likely remain utter primitives! They will never invent even thewheel, much less go to the moon, orbuild a computer! Still slaving inhardscrabble gardens, chopping attree roots with stone axes--how canyou say that's better?Well--I'm not saying it's better. It'san extreme. It's somewhat unreal, andhas very definite problems. It's goodyou see them so clearly. But I wonderif you perceive the other side of thecoin. If internalism is an unworkableextreme, then so is externalism aspracticed in our post-modern world. The out and out rush to create externaldevices to do for us, including as itnow does such activities as build forus, think for us, fight for us, andsoon reproduce for us--this rush createsa world in which we have fewer andfewer roles to play. How healthy, challenging, or enriching is a lifeconsisting mostly of sitting, eating, driving, viewing, and pushing littlebuttons? True, we still do some ofthe thinking. But for how long?

Is this profound erosion of thehuman skill base really inevitable?Or is some sort of balanced approachalso a choice? Decades ago, it becamepossible to manufacture nylon stockingsthat would never run, and kitchensponges that would not wear out ina few weeks. But these don't exist, because someone chose not to producethem. Apparently, then, choosing toforgo certain kinds of progress is notcompletely impossible. Corporationssay "no" to progress all the time, whenever profits are at stake. Perhapspeople can too, when lives are at stake. In the East, over several centuries, amazingly effective systems of self-defense evolved employing veryminimal external tools--such ashands and feet alone, or sword, or bowand arrow. Advancement in these"martial arts" was often accompaniedby profound spiritual growth. Sincethe real struggle was with oneselfand one’s worldview--an adept learnedfar more than just how to "fight."In the West, on the other hand, a verysmall number of creative men hadtheir inventive epiphanies--creatingmuskets, then repeating rifles, thenUzi’s, and so on. Each step in thisdirection, though highly creative forone person, put greater abilities tokill into the hands of people withless and less skill, wisdom, or evenphysical maturity. This is not to saythat people cannot become highlyskilled at shooting--because theycan. Rather, the point is, terribledamage can be done without anyskill at all, which is not true of thesimpler tools. In the Eastern way, an archer canachieve such egoless unity with hissurroundings as to put an arrowthrough a distant target he cannoteven see. In the West, a neuroticeleven-year old can gun down thirtyclassmates in as many seconds.Which of these beings should a society try to produce?

46 YOGA LIVING Summer 2011

Soil is the life-giving “skin” of the earth that is formed naturallyby physical, chemical and biological processes. Soil consists ofmineral and organic matter, organisms, air and water. Themineral portion is derived from bedrock that is weathered intogravel, sand, silt and clay. The organic matter is derived fromthe decomposition of living organisms (leaves, branches, animal excrement, etc.). Nature’s “waste” is recycled through thesoil ecosystem. Living part of the soil consists of fungi, bacteria, protozoa, etc. Soil is a dynamic system where all the parts areinterdependent. It is an essential part of the earth’s ecosystemwhere the biosphere (life), atmosphere (air), hydrosphere(water) and geosphere (earth) all interact.

Organic matter is an extremely important component of ahealthy soil ecosystem. Organic matter is broken down to a stable form called humus, which remains in the soil for a verylong time. It improves structure, increases water-holding capacity, supplies and retains nutrients and creates air space. As organic matter is broken down, its high carbon contentserves as a source of food for microorganisms; these, in turn, are essential in making nutrients available for plants. Organicallyenriched soils act as a sink for carbon that would otherwisebe in the form of carbon dioxide (a gas responsible for globalwarming) in the atmosphere. Carbon can be sequestered inthe soil through organic farming practices, thus reducing theamount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

Fertile soils increase agricultural yield, thus increasing humanhealth and population. Throughout history, soil fertility andmanagement has had a great influence on the rise and fall ofcivilizations. In Mesopotamia, the fertile soils around theTigris and Euphrates Rivers lead to the rise of Eurasia, and therich soils of the American Great Plains helped to fuel the growthof the United States. Also, civilizations have fallen when theirsoils where not properly managed such as Easter Island andthe Mayan cultures. This shows how important it is to properlymanage soils today. Fertile, well-managed soil is essential for ahealthy, sustainable civilization and environment.

Healthy, nutrient-rich soils produce healthy plants, which inturn produce healthy, nutritious food. The health of wholeecosystem depends on healthy soil since plants are a primarysource of food for all living creatures. Plants can manufacturecarbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, and phytonutrients, but they are dependant on soils for a supply of available minerals. Clay and organic matter retain nutrients in the soiland microorganisms help make them available for plants toprocess. All parts of the soil must be in balance for optimumfertility for healthy plants and nutritious food.

Erosion, loss of fertility, and suburban sprawl are three very serious threats to the world’s soils. Erosion occurs when exposed soil is carried away by the wind and rain. Some causesof erosion are poor agricultural practices, construction, mining, overgrazing and deforestation. Topsoil is the uppermost soillayer; it is the most fertile and is biologically active. Since the1880’s, the American Great Plains has lost half of their topsoildue mainly to improper agricultural practices. Since an inch oftopsoil takes 500 years or more to form, it is considered a finite resource and this crucial resource is necessary to feedthe world.

Non-sustainable agricultural practices are a major reason for the loss of soil fertility. Modern industrial farming practices don’t replenish the full array of micronutrients andorganic matter needed for healthy soil and plant growth. Thenutritional qualities of our food declines as the mineral content of our soil become depleted.

Some of our best soils are being removed and covered over bysuburban sprawl. According to the US Census of Agriculture, between 2002 and 2007 there has been a 1.7 percent decreasein the amount of agricultural land. This equals 3.2 millionareas per year and that number has held for the previous 15 years as well. Loss of suburban farmland means that therewill be less local food available for urban areas.

Better soil management practices, as well as land use planningand education will help with large-scale soil preservation. Organic farming and permaculture applied to large-scale agriculture will conserve and enrich soils. These methods preservethe soil and maintain its fertility through cover-cropping,mulching, crop rotation, composting, and organic fertilization.

Individually we can help to preserve our soils. By purchasingorganically produced food we are creating demand for a sustainable method of agriculture. Organic principles can beapplied to the lawn, food garden and ornamental landscape.Organic fertilizers and compost help to feed the soil life andhelps rebuild soil structure and fertility. Mulching preventserosion as well as adding organic matter to the soil. Also, limiting the use of yard chemicals helps to preserve the vitalityof the soil ecosystem.

Soil is a precious natural resource that must be managed properly to promote better health and longevity for animals, human beings and the environment as a whole.

A Precious Resource

Healthy Family | by Dr. Mark Wiley

might look at these as separate issues; deal witheach of them individuallyby prescriptions and thenreferral to a dietician or nutritionist. However, in myholistic practice I see thesevarious health problems as being part and parcel of an overallwellness imbalance. And it is this imbalance that must be corrected or else the person’s conditions will continue to exist,no matter how many pills are swallowed.

I suggested to this person that he take some Chinese herbalformulas and said that a change in diet was necessary, as werechanges in daily activities, including a need for regular exercise—in addition to receiving hands-on energy treatments.Clearly most of these methods become the sole responsibilityof that person to manage his own life by establishing a ritualized sleep/wake cycle, by eating protein at every mealand eating three to six times per day to maintain energy lev-els, to avoid all foods and drinks that spike blood sugar or leadto weight gain or dampness retention, to get out and walk atleast 20 minutes per day if prolonged gym exercise is not anoption, and so on.

The healer’s art lies in seeing that sleep deprivation is bothcaused by and is also a cause of anxiety; that weight gain is dueto improper diet and emotional issues; that insomnia is a resultof anxiety and poor food choices and lifestyle choices and jobsthat lead to stress and organ-energy imbalances. There issomething in the body “allowing” these ailments to thrive.Uncovering that imbalance is an art. Following the progressof the ailments and adjusting to them over time is also an art,one that both the healer and the patient come to share.

If you do not understand this fundamental responsibility toyourself, you may never achieve optimal health. And whileprescription drugs can take away the pain as long as you usethem, the underlying mechanism causing the pain is still working night and day in your body. The only way to truly be“cured” is to remove the cause of the pain (or illness) and thento balance the body so it is able to resist on its own. And thebest way is to choose to walk a holistic path, to forge ahead byutilizing a synergistic program that requires your own passionate personal involvement.

So the pair of linked concepts that always needs to be considered when looking into medical alternatives, then, isthat true healing is an art and that you, personally, hold muchof the responsibility for reaching your wellness goals. Thehealer will point the way, will provide the hands-on work, andwill furnish you with educational material and traditionalknowledge. But it is you, the fellow artist, who must stay onthe path and do the walking.

HERE ARE TWO THINGS TO KEEP IN MINDWHEN LOOKING INTO A HOLISTIC HEALTHPROGRAM. First, alternative therapies and holistic

wellness programs are art forms, not sciences. Second, to bemost effective, all natural wellness approaches demand thedaily involvement of the person in need of the care.

Alternative therapies are an art because, unlike science, preciseresults cannot be repeated over and over. This is not a sign ofanything lacking in the so-called alternative methods of healing, but simply because your health issue almost certainly has morethan one simple cause (and perhaps a half-dozen symptoms)and will need a shifting strategy of therapies to finally resolve.

Let’s say you are receiving care from a chiropractor for neckpain. He adjusts your cervical vertebrae and the pain subsides. However, when you return a few days later and the same areais adjusted, the pain doesn’t go away. Is this a failure of thetreatment? No, because the chiropractor, having palpated youprior to the adjustment, also knows that your thoracic spineis subluxated (misaligned). Thus, on this day he adjusts twolocations to alleviate the pain, whereas the other day only oneadjustment was necessary.

Another example finds you seeking help for insomnia in theoffice of an acupuncturist. After the initial examination, theacupuncturist puts together a “point prescription” or list ofacupoints that will be used to treat your sleeplessness. Today’spoints may be selected to calm the liver and heart. But tomorrowthe same insomnia may require the use of points to balancethe heart and kidneys. You see, while you are still sufferingfrom the same sleep disorder, the underlying cause of it keepschanging due to a variety of related factors, not the least ofwhich is changes in daily stressors and lifestyle choices.

These are merely two small examples of how the art of holistichealing makes it possible to continue the healing process bylooking for, expecting, allowing and making modifications intreatment from changes in the body that often confound amore scientific yet less healthy method of care.

Our second issue is that the effectiveness of any holistic programnecessitates the active involvement of the person in need ofthe care. This is true of nearly every holistic healing methodI can think of. In my own practice I try to maximize time andeffort in an attempt to make the problem “go away” as fast apossible with the least amount of fuss. Synergistic care is theonly way I have found to truly do this.

A person had come to me complaining of severe insomnia, anxiety, fatigue and weight gain. A primary care physician
