Dearly Beloved in Christ Jesus,

It is that time of the year when through the Great Lent,we shed our sinful desires and enter into the hope and peace of the resurrection. May the Risen Lord enable us to identify our weaknesses and guide us into His peace and joy.

As you know, the renovation of the Sanctuary in our church is progressing. The sanctuary is the most venerable and sacred place in the Church. The Altar, the Tabernacle and all sacred images are made in memory of Heaven which is the dwelling place of God. The Sanctuary is the reflection of Heaven - heaven on earth.

The Altar

The Altar represents the Throne of God and the Sepulchre (tomb) of our Lord.

The altar represents the empty tomb, the symbol of our Lord’s resurrection, namely the risen Lord Himself.

Shepherd's Message

It is the symbol of, the Messiah, the anointed one. The complete anointing of the altar during their consecration reminds us of this anointed one.

The Throne of God

Traditionally the St.Thomas Christians in Kerala call the altar ‘Sornos’ which is the Malayalam term of ‘Thronos’. It means throne and thus, the altar is the throne of God in the Sanctuary, which is in fact heaven on earth.

The Risen Lord ascended into Heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. This is what is expressed in the Creed. Thus the Gospel Lectionary is the symbol of Jesus Christ and it always kept closed on the right side of the altar. This book is taken out of the

sanctuary only during the celebration of mass or during processions. At such times it should always be accompanied by lighted candles and incense.

The St. Thomas Cross

The St. Thomas Cross is kept on the left side of the altar. This Cross on the altar represents the Holy Spirit. Thus, the altar, which is a symbol of God's glorious throne, has at its center the Father, the Son on the right, and the Holy Spirit on the left. Consequently, a Priest who approaches the altar during the Eucharistic celebration kisses it at the center, the right and the left.

Beth Gazza

The Beth Gazza meaning'treasure houses' are arranged on both sides of the altar. Usually they are made in the Northern and Southern walls of the sanctuary. The Chalice is prepared in the Beth Gazza on the southern side and the paten on the northern side.

Bema

Bema is a raised platform set in the middle of the nave in churches. A small table is set on the middle of it. A St. Thomas Cross is placed in the middle of this table amidst two candles. These candles depict the Old and New Testaments, respectively.The place of lectors is on the right and on the left. From there, readings from the Old Testament and New Testaments are read.

Hykala

It refers to the large central place where the believers gather. It is the place of the faithful—a symbol of the whole earth.

The renovation of the Sanctuary in our parish church should lead us into a closer experience of God. Ultimately, our goal is to reach God. To achieve this end, let us order our lives in the way God desires and celebrate the Eucharist with devotion and sincerity. True knowledge leads us to Love, and perfect love leads to surrender.

I request your prayers and whole hearted cooperation towards the task of renovating our Sanctuary.

May the Risen Lord fill our lives with hope and peace.

Mistakes or errors in Deeds arising from an accidental slip or omission can be corrected by a Deed of rectification. It must be certain mistakes or inaccuracies which have

inadvertently crept in the Deed or certain clauses are ambiguous which requires clarification.

Mistakes may relate to any vital information in the Deed, namely description of the parties, description of the property, amount of consideration or some such particulars which are intended to convey the true intention of the parties. In such circumstance the parties to the original instrument can execute a Deed of rectification by mutual consent of parties rectifying the original instrument. However mutual consent of the parties to the Deed is mandatory. Neither the Indian contract act nor any other statute contains any provision as to the effect of unilateral alteration of any document by one of the parties to the contract.

Where the mutual consent is not possible, in such case the party complaining of the mistake has no other alternative but to go to the court of law seeking his relief under section 26 of the Specific Relief Act 1963. But it must be within 3 years from the date of notice of the mistake. The law says that where the parties enter into an agreement, but there is an error in the reduction of the agreement into writing, so that the written instrument fails, through some mistake of draftsman either in matter of law or in matter of fact, the court of equity will correct and reform the instrument to the real intention of the parties.

Rectification of clerical or typographical errors and removal of defects or imperfections which does not create any rights does not require any stamp duty (mistake of draftsman). Whereas rectification, for example, in the measurement of the property, which involves creation of rights, requires stamp duty (material changes).

Modification Deed

Modification relates to alteration of some existing terms or conditions of an executed agreement by mutual consent of the parties to the agreement. It is a well settled principle that, the parties to a contract may effect a variation of the contract by modifying or altering its terms by mutual consent. Whereas rectification relates to correction of some bonafide mistakes or errors discovered in a deed already executed.

written instrument is void or voidable and who has reasonable apprehension that such instrument may cause him serious injury, may be cancelled by a court of law on the action taken by the party so apprehends. A suit under this section is maintainable only by a person against whom the instrument is void or voidable or to whom it may cause injury. void means- unlawful or against public policy. Voidable means- vitiated by undue influence, fraud or coercion.

Whereas a sale deed cannot be cancelled by mutual consent of the parties. It can be done by execution of a fresh deed of reconveyance by purchaser in favour of the vendor in respect of the sale already executed.

THE EARLY DAYSThomas was born in Pagani, a town in the Province of Salerno, Italy, on 1st December, 1831. He was the 7th child of a Pharmacist, Dr. Antonio Fusco and his wife, Stella Giordano. He was baptized on the same day and was named Thomas, later as a sign of devotion to the Virgin Mary, he added Maria to his name. His parents educated him with loving care, inculcating in him sound morals and religious principles. Thomas, at a tender age showed signs of wishing to become a Priest, while playing with other children, he built a small alter of stone in his garden and pretended to celebrate the Mass.

His sufferings began at an early age, the death of his Mother, who was a victim of Cholera, left an indelible mark on his life and a few years later his Father also was taken up, leaving him orphaned. Thomas found comfort and spiritual joy as he prayed before the Sorrowful Mother, to whom he entrusted himself. He became convinced that when we suffer with love, nothing is lost, for if God takes our joy, it is only to prepare us for something far greater.

TO BE A PRIEST FOREVERAmong so many failures and sorrows, Thomas received Jesus in the Holy Eucharist for the first time at the age of 8, and soon after that he resolved to become a Priest. But his relatives wanted him to abandon the idea of Consecration to God in the Priest hood. They wanted him to continue the line of honors and prestige of the family. Poor Thomas, in this predicament, there seemed to be no future for him and his plans seemed to melt like snow in the sun. But he did not lose faith. He thought seriously of his project to follow Jesus among the sons of Ignatius of Loyola. He joined the Jesuit Congregation, but after a brief experience in the Jesuit Novitiate, he had to return home for family reasons. His relatives used every means to remove him from the Cloister. He then entered the Seminary of Nocera. His great faith was an example to all in the Seminary. His companions not only loved him, but also respected and revered him for his humility, prudence and affection. The foundations of his interior life were prayer, devotion to our Lady of Sorrows and above all, his love for the Eucharist.

AS A PRIESTHis longing came to be true when he was Ordained as a Priest on 22nd December 1855. Throughout his life, this Priest was a true Catechist. While celebrating the Eucharist, Fr. Thomas was deeply touched, even to the point of shedding tears, and as a confessor, he was greatly appreciated. His confessional became the seat of mercy and of spirituality, from which many souks departed transformed.

Right from the start, he saw to the formation of boys, for whom he opened a morning school in his own home, while for young people and adults, bent on increasing their human and Christian formation. He also organized evening prayers at the Parish Church. In 1862, he opened a school of Moral Theology in his own home to train Priests for the Ministry of Confession, kindling enthusiasm for the love of Christ’s Blood; that same year, he founded the, ‘Society of the Catholic Apostolate,’ for missions among the common people.

THE BEGINNING OF THE CONGREGATIONDeeply moved by the plight of an orphan girl, a victim of the streets, after careful preparation in prayer for discernment, Fr. Thomas founded the Congregation of the, ‘Daughters of Charity of the Most Precious Blood’, on 6th January 1873. The Institute was inaugurated by Bishop Raffaele Ammirante, who, with the clothing of the first three sisters with the Religious Habit, blessed the first Orphanage for seven poor little Orphan girls.

THE FINAL DAYSFr. Thomas, during the year 1890, was suffering from Hepatitis. Afflicted by acute pain, instead of complaining, he would exclaim, “Oh my Lord Jesus, what pain you suffered on the Cross!”After much pain and suffering, the soul of the Blessed Priest left this life to move towards eternal life at the age of 59, on 24th February 1891.

THOMAS THE BLESSEDThe cause of the beatification of Fr. Thomas Maria Fusco was initiated in 1955 and the decree of his heroic Christian virtues was published on 24th April 2001. The miraculous healing of Mrs. Maria Battaglia on 20 August 1964 in Sicily, through the intercession of Fr. Thomas Maria Fusco was recognized on 7th July 2001.

With his beatification, Pope John Paul II presents Fr. Thomas Maria Fusco as an example and a guide to holiness for Priests, for the people of God and for his spiritual daughters, the Daughters of Charity of the Most Precious Blood.

From the Statutes of St. Thomas Parish ....

Ward Councillors

The Parish is divided into various Wards and each ward shall have at least one councillor for every fifteen families. Any change in the boundaries of the Wards or the creation of new Wards is to be done by the Parish Priest after having consulted the Parish Council.

However, there shall be a minimum of three councillors from every ward of which one shall be a female councillor.

The Ward Councillors are elected on the Annual Day of the Ward or any other appointed day, but before 31st of March by the members of the Ward and their names are to be confirmed by the Parish Priest. Parish Priest may nominate a member of the Ward as the Co-ordinator of the Ward after having consulted the Priest-in-charge/ Brother-in- charge of the Ward. One of the Ward Councillors shall be nominated as the Secretary and one shall be the Treasurer of the Ward by the Councillors.

Each Ward Councillor is to be assigned a particular territory of the Ward or a particular number of families, though there should be a collective responsibility among the Ward Councillors.

There shall be at least two Youth Councillors in every Ward of which one shall be a Female and those shall be elected on the Ward day. However, they will not be part of the Parish Council, though they may be invited to the Parish Council Meetings.

The Ward Councillors must be deep rooted in faith, service minded and socially acceptable and shall attend the Parish Council meetings without fail.

The rights and duties of the Ward Councillors:

a) Maintain reports and general accounts of the ward and ascertain that they are approved in the ward meeting and submit to the Parish Priest within Six months of the year

b) Arrange prayer meeting at least once in a month in the ward.

c) Arrange ten days Rosary in October. d) Arrange carol in December.

e) Arrange ward day.

f ) Co-ordinate Parish Feast and Ambu-Procession.

g) Arrange Onam celebration.

h) Inform the ward members about any important message or information announced during Sunday Holy Mass.

i) Collect details of sick people in the ward and any death must be informed to the Parish Priest.

j) Co-ordinate the participants for all retreats, Seminars and Festivities organized by the Parish.

k) Distribution of Santhome Messenger, Calendar and Christmas card in each house.

l) Remind monthly subscription charges.

m) Formulate year plan for the ward.

n) Collect details of newly arrived families and youth

o) Arrange ward outing in consultation with the Priest-in-charge of the ward.

p) Report to Parish Priest if any special award or recognition received by any ward members.

q) Arrange for the allotted Sunday Holy Mass offertory at 7 am once in a year.

r) Arrange Krupalaya visit once in a year.

s) Collect blood donation list from the ward.

t) Inform the Parish Priest about any family issues, faith Problems, financial crisis etc. in the ward.

All the particular accounts such as the accounts of stalls during Church feast, Carol accounts, Ambu accounts and / or any other accounts must be presented in the ward meeting by the treasurer and the approved accounts must be submitted to the Parish Priest within one month. Any extra-ordinary fund collection shall be done only with the prior approval of the Priest-in-charge of the Ward and after having consulted the Parish Priest. The list of regular absentees from the Ward prayer meetings must be submitted to the Parish Priest.

Travelling allowance to Brothers, Sisters and in-charge Priest should be paid by the respective ward whenever and wherever it is necessary. An appraisal report of each family in the ward in the prescribed format by the Ward Councillors must be submitted to the Parish Priest once in a year. Any recommendation for admission, or education scholarship, the request letter must be signed and forwarded by the Ward Councillor.

It was a Christmas celebration with a difference – Rather than confining to ourselves the joy and cheer of Christmas , we desired to spread the same among the less privileged around

us.The STARTTites ( SLP – juniors & seniors) went to Snehasadan Boys' Home(A Home for the under-privileged Children, located off Bannerghatta Road , Arekere-Mico Layout PO ) on the 20th of December and celebrated Christmas along with the 33 boys.

The idea was conceived several months back & the STARTTites were asked to start saving money towards buying some gifts for the boys of Snehasadan. There were contributions from some of the mentors/volunteers and well-wishers also. Thanks to these contributions, we have been able to provide each and every child of Snehasadan with a bed sheet set (bed sheet+ pillow cover), a stationary kit (Notebook, pencil, pen) & a chocolatebar. These items were giftwrapped as individual packets to ensure that each STARTTite could personally handover a gift packet.

Apart from handing over the gifts, there were snacks, games & cultural performances as part of the celebrations. Several games were organized for the STARTTites and the Snehasadan boys. There were also cultural performances (storytelling, songs & dances) by both Snehasadan Boys and STARTTItes. The events of the day ended with Xmas Carols by the STARTTites. Though the initial plan was also to have dinner along with them, the plan had to be changed to be sure that we are back on time. Hence the dinner packets for the Snehasadan boys were handed over to them&the dinner for STARTTites was given as take away parcels after getting back to Church. We were back in our Church campus by 8pm.

From the feedback received, we are happy to learn that it was indeed a memorable day for Snehasadan Boys as well as the STARTTites. It wasn’t only about the sharing of goodies & gifts, but also of spending time together through games and cultural activities by children of the same age group. The bonding was evident, and as we were leaving Snehasadan, the boys gave each and every STARTTite a Snehasadan 2015 Calendar wishing them the very best for a Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year.

The STARTTites were very impressed by the discipline, hardwork& the sharing nature demonstrated by the Snehasadan boys and came back feeling happy and content.

The Annual Day

We celebrated the annual day on March 1 with many cultural events. Rev. Fr. Varghese Kelamparambil was the main celebrant for the Holy Mass and gave the message of the day. The prize winners of academics as well as cultural events were given prizes. Br. Romeo Kallukulam CMI, our former coordinator was facilitated on that occasion. We offer our sincere prayers for his Diaconate. Our Vicar Fr. Thomas Kallukulam, Our Director Fr. Gregory Malayil and our Asst. Vicar Fr. Jose Kaduvanal were also present.
