The Value of a Smile

It costs nothing but creates much.

It enriches those who receive without impoverishing those who give.

None are so well off that they can get along without it,

And none so poor but are richer for its benefits.

It creates happiness in the home,

fosters goodwill in business, and is the countersign of friends.

It is rest to the weary, daylight to be discouraged,

sunshine to the sand, and nature's best remedy for trouble.

Yet it cannot be bought, begged, borrowed, or stolen,

for it is something that is no earthly good to anybody until it is given away.

To smile then is to look at others with the eyes of Christ.

To know how to love them and smile at them,

through our tears if need be, is to breathe in advance the atmosphere of Heaven.

Amen.

Principal Report

Defibrillator

We would like to inform parents that the school has recently purchased a defibrillator and our staff members

have been trained in how to use it. Hopefully, we never have to use it, but it is reassuring to know that we have

one in the school.

Parking

The parish has requested that parents not park on the grass around the church as the vehicles have damaged

kerbing and reticulation. Parents are welcome to park in the marked bays around the church. Thank you for your

support with regard to this issue.

CUA Fun Run

As part of the Fun Run program, we request that all students wear their sport uniform to school on Tuesday, 1

August.

Parent Connect

All parents are invited to attend our next Parent Connect meeting on Friday, 4 August, immediately after the

school assembly. The meeting will be held in the staffroom. Our Key Literacy coordinator, Mrs Pantano, will be

speaking about how children learn to read.

There is a direct link between reading and student achievement. To illustrate the relationship, I have included

an infographic in this week’s newsletter, which shows interesting statistics about the number of books in the

home and student achievement.

Principal News

Leadership Professional Development

On Monday, 31 July I will be attending the required Principals’ Leaders Forum, during which there will be

discussion about the new educational and school administrative initiatives currently being undertaken within our

Catholic Education System.

Also on Tuesday, 1 August until Thursday, 3 August, I will be attending the Catholic Primary Principal Association

(CPPA) Conference. The keynote speaker will be international Education leader, Yong Zhao, who will be

speaking about technological demands, which impact on the way students learn and how to prepare them for

the future. Having availability of such a high quality international educationalist, the CPPA has extended the

opportunity to Assistant Principals to attend the Conference on Wednesday.

During my absence from the school, Mrs Tanya Giovannangelo and Mrs Rosemary Paparella will be responsible

for the school and you can contact them should the need arise.

May God bless your week,

Carmel Costin Principal

Library News

Term 3 is when Yidarra families are invited to participate in Operation Christmas Child. Boxes from WA are sent

to children in third world condition in countries like Thailand, Vietnam or Cambodia.

This is how it works.

1. Take a shoebox (no bigger than A4) and fill it with small gifts, school supplies, hygiene items and clothes

for a child aged between 2 and 14.

2. Add $10 to cover transportation.

3. Return boxes to the library by Friday, 15 September so they can be delivered to the processing centre in

Balcatta during the October holidays.

For more information and advice on what not to include, go to the website operationchristmaschild.org.au or

collect a leaflet from the library.

Next P&F Meeting

The next P&F meeting will be on Wednesday, 30 August at 7.30pm. Everyone is welcome.

Nature Playground

Thank you to all the parents who attended the Nature Play meeting last Wednesday evening. We will need

support from our families to get started on the next phase of the project. A form will be sent to parents shortly

via Class Representatives so that families can volunteer or help the Nature Play committee. Any queries

regarding the Nature Play project can be direct to [email protected].

CUA Fun Run

The P&F have secured Channel 7 to film a separate run on Tuesday,1 August 2017 for our fundraising students.

If you haven't already commenced fundraising, it is not too late. Please refer to your sponsorship form or visit

www.schoolfunrun.com.au on how to get started. Students only need to raise $10 to claim a prize. The funds

raised will assist with the construction of our Nature Playgrounds. If your child did not receive a form, spares are

available from the office foyer.

We have also been lucky enough to have Olympian Swimmer, Eamon Sullivan come along to cheer on our

runners. All fundraising students who would like to participate on Tuesday can wear their sports uniform. Please

note that this event is being run by the P&F and is separate to the Cross Country running which students will

participate in during their individual sports lessons this week. All students who are not fundraising can still come

down to the oval at lunch time to spectate and cheer on our runners.

Please direct any queries to [email protected].

Woolworths Earn & Learn

Woolworths Earn & Learn program commenced on Wednesday, 26 July 2017. When shopping at Woolworths,

please collect the stickers and drop the completed sticker form into the box located in the front office. Woolworths

will only accept fully completed sheets this year so if you are unable to complete a full sheet, please place only

the stickers in the box.

Sustainable Uniform Shop

The P&F has agreed to continue with the Sustainable Uniform Shop for another year. The annual fee is covered

by the P&F as a benefit to families so that they can buy and sell uniforms without incurring a fee. It would be

appreciated if parents would use this avenue to sell their uniforms rather than post on class Facebook pages. If

you would like to donate your uniforms, please leave your uniforms in the front office for our Sustainable Uniform

committee member to collect.
