Prayer for Assumption of Mary
O God who raises up the lowly,
you chose Mary in all her simplicity to be the mother of our Saviour.
Mary was blessed among all women.
Through faith in God’s promise, she gave birth to Peace.
May the prayers of this woman now clothed with the sun fill us with the hope and blessing of her child,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Feast of the Assumption of Mary
The feast day of the Assumption of Mary celebrates that God assumed the Virgin Mary into Heaven following
her death. Catholics celebrate this feast on Tuesday, 15 August in Australia and it is a holy day of obligation.
On Tuesday, we celebrate the Feast of the Assumption of Mary into heaven. The staff and students will celebrate
this feast by attending mass at 9am. Parents are invited to attend mass and to stay after mass for morning tea.
League Tag Competition
Congratulations to our students who participated in the Interschool League Tag Competition. The ‘A’ division
teams came second, ‘B’ division boys came second and ‘B’ division girls finished third. Thank you to Mr
Debowski and Mr Muto who trained and supported the teams on the day.
Indonesian Day
I would like to express our appreciation to the Indonesian General Consulate, Perth, Mrs Agnes Harijanto from
Bali Modern Cuisine and Mrs Sue Cooper from Corpus Christi College for giving so generously of their time and
resources for the year 6 Indonesian incursion day. Thank you also to Mrs Bianca Capello our Indonesian teacher
for organising an excellent cultural experience.
30 Years of Service
Congratulations to our groundsman, Frank Mijatovic, who has been recognised for 30 years of service in Catholic
Education.

Feast of the Assumption – Whole School Mass
Along with Sundays and Christmas Day, the Feast of the Assumption is considered a Holy Day of Obligation in
the Church Liturgical calendar. The school will celebrate this day at 9am on Tuesday, 15 August with a whole of
school Mass. Parents, families and friends of all students are invited to join us. The Mass is being prepared by
Buddy classes, PP and Year 4. There will be a morning tea afterwards in the hall organised by the parents of
these classes to which you are all invited. A coffee van will be in attendance.
Tanya Giovannangelo Assistant Principal & Religious Education Science Week 12-20 August
This week marks National Science Week 2017, the theme for science week is Future Earth.
As part of the celebrations there will be a number of science activities for the children
to participate in over recess and lunchtime next Friday, 18 August in and around the
science room. The junior atrium Year PP-3 students can visit and join in at recess and
the senior atrium years 4-6 students at lunchtime.

The Year 5 completed their online assessment on Wednesday, 9 August. Year 3 students will complete the
online assessment as follows:
3B – Monday, 14 August at 9am 3G – Tuesday, 15 August at 11am 3R – Thursday, 17 August at 9am Please ensure your children are present at school at these times.

Solo Performances - Congratulations to our Percussion Soloist and String Soloists for your performances at the
Catholic Performing Arts Festival. It’s been lovely reading your feedback sheets and I am so proud of your efforts!
Wishing luck to Lily D 6G who will be performing on the Ukulele this week.
A reminder that it is the responsibility of the parents/guardians to transport their child to and from their
performances. A timetable of performance dates is posted outside the music room.
Junior Choir and Senior Choir Performance – Date in your diary!
The Junior and Senior choir are performing on Thursday, 24 August at the Vasto Club in Balcatta.
Students will need to be at school by 8.10am to board the bus.
A note has gone home to parents so please contact me if you didn’t receive it.

Y6 Indonesian Day Incursion
Selamat Pagi! Good Morning! . On Wednesday, 9 August 2017, our Year 6s’ had a
lovely afternoon enjoying some Indonesian cultural experiences at school.
They learned to play two Indonesian traditional instruments from Java island,
Angklung and Gamelan. The Angklung session was conducted by our very talented
music teacher, Mrs Natasha Stokes. As for the Gamelan session, it was conducted
by Mr. Sofari Hidayat from the Indonesian General Consulate, Perth.
After their hard work of learning the instruments, they were rewarded with some Indonesian Jajanan Pasar
(traditional snack) provided by Mrs Sue Cooper from Corpus Christi College and Mrs Agnes from Bali Modern
Cuisine, Es Cendol (Indonesian iced jelly drink served with coconut milk and palm sugar) and Dadar Gulung
(rolled pancake with grated coconut cooked in palm sugar).
The students did a fantastic job playing the Angklung and Gamelan. They also enjoyed the Jajanan Pasar. It
was a fabulous day!
Terima kasih (Thank you) so very much to everyone involved in making this cultural experience a reality and a
great success!!!

Book Week
Book Week is fast approaching. Have you thought about your costume for ‘dress up as a
book character day’ on Friday, 25 August? Remember costumes do not have to be fancy
and expensive. Most families would already have something at home that can be recycled
or upcycled to make a different costume. Some students may wish to dress up to go along
with the theme;
Escape to Everywhere!
Over the next week or so you will see the creative work that different classes have done
as they focus on the short list picture books. The library displays grow by the day.
Late library Books
Some students seem to be having trouble remembering to bring their books to school on their library day. It can
be helpful if families have a list of which specialist lessons happen on each day so students can be prepared. A
list on the fridge where everyone can see it is often useful. Some families also find it a good idea to keep library
bags and books in one regular spot, such as on the bedroom door handle or next to the couch in the family room.
If you are planning a trip away and your students will be out of school for a few weeks, please return all the
library books before you go. Other students may be waiting for the books that are sitting in your house while you
jet set around the world.
Operation Christmas Child
Term 3 is when Yidarra families are invited to participate in Operation Christmas Child. Boxes from WA are sent
to children in third world condition in countries like Thailand, Vietnam or Cambodia. This is how it works.
1. Take a shoebox (no bigger than A4) and fill it with small gifts, school supplies, hygiene items and clothes
for a child aged between 2 and 14
2. Add $10 to cover transportation
3. Return them to the library so they can be delivered to the processing centre in Balcatta during the October
holidays.

Fun Run Fundraiser
Thank you to all of the supporters of our P&F Fundraiser.
To date, we have raised an amazing amount of $9,280.03
Now is the time to return your sponsorship forms with any cash raised so your child can claim their prize (if they
have raised a minimum of $10). If you have misplaced your sponsorship form, please print and complete the
attached form. A list of available prizes can be viewed on www.schoolfunrun.com.au, please ensure that your
form and any cash is returned to the front office no later than this Friday, 18 August 2017. As the online prize
ordering system is down, the only way to order your prizes is by returning the sponsorship/order form. A printable
copy of the Order form is available in this newsletter or a hard copy in the office foyer.
Nature Play
A volunteer request flyer has been sent home, if you did not receive your copy a printable copy is available in
this newsletter or a hard copy in the office foyer.
Woolworths Earn & Learn
Please keep collecting your Earn & Learn Stickers from Woolworths and put your completed forms
in the box provided in the front office. Woolworths will only accept fully completed forms so if you
are unable to complete a full form, please just place the stickers (without the form) in the box or
extra forms can be collected from the office.

Scholastic Book Club
Thank you to everyone that ordered from Issue 5, especially those that used the quick and easy LOOP
method. The 10 book prize pack for the class with the most orders was won by Year 1B, Congratulations and
enjoy the bonus books. Their second time in winning this prize! Tracey from Scholastic came to school on
Tuesday and presented the winning class with their prize books.
Issue 5 orders have earnt the school over $300 in reward dollars to spend on new books and resources for the
library and school. Every purchase helps towards these reward dollars as the school earns 20% from all
sales. The library is always purchasing new books for the children to enjoy with these rewards dollars.
The LOOP service is very quick and easy. For those that have not registered and still using the paper order
form with cash, now is a great time to register. Not only is it quick and easy but there is an opportunity to keep
the momentum rolling with bonus books for those that order from consecutive issues. Details can be found on
the web page, but briefly, for those that spend $10 or more each issue you have the opportunity to choose from
bonus books for free.
Issue 5 books have been delivered to the classrooms. Happy reading.

MercyCare Service for Families
MercyCare is the leading not-for-profit Catholic provider of aged care, family, health, disability and community
services. Our Community and Home services provide support to assist individuals over the age of 65yrs to
remain as independent as possible in their own home.
There have been many changes within aged care over the last few years, and many people do not realise that
there are government funded services available to individuals to keep them living at home for longer. These
services can be flexible and include support to participate in social activities or to keep up with the essentials,
assistance with everyday household tasks and assistance in supporting everyday personal care activities.
The services also include in-home nursing assistance with wound-care, continence management, and
medication management. There are also many support services available for carers to enable them to take a
break.
