The2017/18seasonisuponusagainandIwouldliketowelcomeallthenewmemberstoyourclubandthereturnofourloyalexistingmembers.
There’sa role foreveryone inSurf Life Saving, and theexperiencesandopportunities that you’ll faceeachdayareneverthesame.
Theskillsyoulearnalongthewaywillnotonlysavelivesandhelpthecommunity,butpotentiallyputyouonthepathwaytoplacesyouneverthoughtpossible.
Youwillalsomeetpeoplefromallwalksoflife,formlifelongfriendshipsandhavefunalongtheway.
TwoyearsagotheclubwassmashedbycycloneMarciaandwehadayearofrebuilding.Inthe2016/17seasonwehada37%increaseinmembership,a52%increaseinnippermembershipanda13%increaseinpatrolhours.Thesefiguresareextraordinarygiventhecurrenteconomicdownturninourregion.
Thisseasonwearegoingtobuildonthegreateffortsfromlastseason.
Again,IwouldliketothankyouforyourcommitmenttotheYeppoonSLSC.

2 CLUBHISTORYTheYeppoonSurfLifeSavingClubdatesbackto1918.TheClubwasactuallyformedin1926andcalledtheYeppoonFirstAidandLifeSavingClub.During1931theclubmembersgained48awardsandhelditsfirst SurfCarnivalonSunday4December1932.On the sameday, theClubheldexaminations for theSurfBronzeMedallion.Thiseventattracted4000spectatorsfromasfarafieldasGladstoneandDingo.
Thefirstclubhousewasbuilt in1930atthecostof$600.Thenextdayacyclonehitandtheclubandfortybathing shedson thebeachweredestroyed.Theclubmoved intobuildingsadjoining theBeachFrontCaféfollowingthecyclone,andthiswastheclub’shomeuntil1953.Anewclubwasthenbuiltandhousedtheclubuntil1976.
Aftercountlessloanapplicationsandbuildingdesignsthefirstfloorofthecurrentbuildingwasopened29January,1977.Extensionsonthebuildingwereconductedin1979and1984andanewdeckandroofwasbuilt in2012. InFebruary2015, theclubsufferedextensivedamageasaconsequenceofCycloneMarcia.Overthefollowingtwelvemonthperiod,majorbuildingworkswerecompletedwiththeentireupper floor and deck refurbished. A new period in the club dawned, with the refurbished deck barbecomingavibrant,andverywellpatronised,socialsetting.
Theclubhas,andcontinuestogrowitmembershipandcapabilitiesyearonyear. In2016-17theClubwasnamedCluboftheYearforWideBayCapricornBranchandcontestedthisprestigiousawardattheStateAwardsofExcellenceDinnerinAugust2017.WhilewemissedoutontheawardatStateLevel,iswas testament to the great work of our members and puts us in a great position for 2017-18 andbeyond.

Theprogramprovideseligiblechildrenandyoungpeopleaged5upto17(inclusive)whocanleastaffordtojoinasportorrecreationclub,withavouchervaluedatupto$150formembershipand/orregistrationfees.It should be noted that vouchers are issued on a first come, first served basis; therefore there is noguaranteethatachildoryoung/personwillobtainavoucher.
Nearly 4000 clubs have registered for the program. Clubs can apply for registration for Get StartedVouchersatanytime.Registrationisvalidfortheentireprogramperiodsothereisnoneedtoregisterforeachround.

6 METHODS OF COMMUNICATION

7 SAFETY
Safetyonthebeach
Sunscreenmust be applied prior to starting Junior Activities. All participants in water activitiesmustwear a pink vest (not faded). No jewellery can be worn during any events or activities. Sun smartpracticesareencouragedwhenparticipantsarenotinthewateroronthebeachcompeting(ieSlip,Slop,Slap,Wrap).

PersonalSafety
AllnippersaregivenaspecialpresentationbyoneofourSeniorClubmembersonPersonalSafety. Inadditiontothis,everyoneisremindedtotakecareandlookoutforeachother.
Equipmentuse
FibreglassboardscanonlybeusedincompetitionsbynippersfromUnder11agegroupup.Youngeragegroupscanusethefoamboards,andtheGreenCapscanusetheboogieboardsorspecialGreenCapsBoards.ThelargeSurfRescueBoards(Mals)areusedbyagedU14andup.
Allboardsmustbewasheddownandputbackintostorageareasafteruse.
Skis&rescueboards
Only registeredmembers with their BronzeMedallion are allowed to use the skis. All craft must bewashed after use. For more information on Ski use, members should approach one of our regularpaddlers(egGaryWilkins,KevinOhl,MaxBennett,RichardNewtonetc).
IRB(InshoreRescueBoat)
TheIRBmayonlybedrivenandcrewedbymemberswithDriverandCrewaccreditation,orwhenbeingtrainedbyaninstructor.Tobeeligibleforthistraining,membersmusthavetheirBronze.NewIRBcreware always welcome and enquiries should be made with the IRB Captain, Laurie Johansen or ClubCaptainandChiefTrainingOfficer,KirstyGlithero.
ATV(AllTerrainVehicle)
TheATVcanonlybedrivenbymemberswhohavereceivedtheappropriatetraining.PatrolCaptainscanortheChiefTrainingOfficer,KirstyGlithero,canassistwithmoreinformationregardingthis.
8 CLUB CLOTHING
Club apparel is available from the Clothing Shop (on ground level facing the ocean), which is openSundaymorningsduringtheseason.IntheClothingStoreyoucanpurchasethefollowing(inadditiontospecialshirtsandapparelthatmaybecomeavailableduringtheseason):
• Stingersuits;• PinkVests;• Clubcaps(blueandwhite);• Clubhats;• Someswimwear.
Theclubhasasupplyarrangementwiththeclothingmanufacturer,Engine.MemberswillbesuppliedwithacatalogueandorderformandwillberequiredtolodgetheseformsbytheendofSeptember.Acluborderwill thenbeplaced,withdeliveryexpectedwithin6-8weeks.Thisprocesswillberepeatedduringtheseasonasrequired,andwillbeorganisedbyourClothingCoordinator,KathyKing.

9 AWARDS AVAILABLE TO MEMBERS
Nomatterwhatyourmotivationforbecomingalifesaveris,therewillalwaysbeapersonallysatisfyingchallenge ahead. Apart from the benefits of health, fitness, friendship, competition, knowledge,leadershipandbeingabletoputsomethingbackintothecommunity,therearealwayslifesavingawardstobegained,withthemajorityoftheseawardsnownationallyrecognised.
SurflifesaversstartyoungwithActivecadets(13to15years),Activejuniors(15to18)yearsandActiveseniors(18andover).Cadetsreceiveonthejobtrainingwhileonpatrol,whiletheJuniorsareinvolvedinallareasoflifesavingandarerequiredtoperformpatrolduties.Alllifesaversareencouragedtogainextraawardstoimprovetheirskills.

OurJunior/Youth/Cadetsshouldaspiretoachievingtheseawardsinthisorderastheyprogressintheirdevelopment.

9.1 COURSE REQUIREMENTS
YeppoonSLSCoffersnationallyaccreditedtrainingtoitsmemberscoveringarangeofawardsandunitsofcompetency.
Whetheryouwishtopatrolourbeautifulbutsometimeshazardousbeacheswearingthe“Red&Yellow”uniformofour iconic lifesavingmovement, assistwith thedevelopmentofour future life saverswithwatersafetyduties,orsimplygainanemergencycareawardthatwillbeofgreatbenefitineverydaylife,YeppoonSLSCcanhelpachieveyourgoal.
The following is a guide to the Pre Requisites for the many courses available through Training &EducationatYeppoonSLSC.

SurfRescueCertificate
• Mustbe13yearsofageatdateoffinalassessment• Havecompleteda200mtrswiminlessthanfiveminutesinapoolofnotlessthan25mtrsinlength
(mustbecompletedpriortotraininginsurfordeepwater).
Thisawardisopentoallmembersandwillallowmemberstopatrolandassistwithwatersafetyduties.ThefirstSRCcoursedateswillbeadvisedASAP.SeeKirstyorSamformoredetailsonthiscourse.
BronzeMedallion/CertificateIIPublicSafety(AquaticRescue)
• Mustbe15yearsofageatdateoffinalassessment• Have completeda400mswim in less thannineminutes in apoolnot less than25mtrs in length
(mustbecompletedpriortotraininginsurfordeepwater).
Trainingforthiscoursewillinvolve:
• Surfawarenessandsurvivalskills;• Rescueprocedures;• Teamworkandpatrolprocedures;• Emergencycare&Resuscitation;• AnatomyandPhysiology.
A reasonable level of fitness is required to undertake this course as it involves run/swim/runcomponents aswell as rescue scenarios using various rescue equipment in the surf, all ofwhich areassessedattheendofthetrainingcourse.CoursedurationisusuallyeachSundaymorningoveran6-8weekperiod.

9.2 PROFICIENCY
Tobecomeproficientforanyaward,thefollowingmustbecompleted:
• Any timedpool swimMUSTbecompletedprior to theproficiencyorelseyouwillnotbeable tostart;
• Poolswimtimescanbetakenbyanylevel1swimcoach(prooftobesupplied).Acopyofthisformis included on the following page. This form can be given to the Instructor/Coach to sign off onproficienciesforaClubswimmer;
• AllmembersmustcompletetherelevantAwardtheorycomponent.

9.3 TO TAKE PART IN A BRONZE MEDALLION/CERTIFICATE II COURSE

Thecoursewillberunoveraperiodofapproximately8weeks,generallyonaSunday.Duringthistime,youwillbetaughttheskillstobecomeanactivelifesaverandthenassessedonwhatyouhavelearnt.

Cadetsareaminimumageof14throughto17.CadetscompletetheirfinalyearofNippers(U14)doingtheirSurfRescueCertificate(SRC),whichistheminimumrequirementtobeanActivePatrolmember.
WhenaCadetcompleteshis/herBronzeMedallion,whichisthenextproficiency,theybecomeanActiveJuniormemberuntiltheyturn18.
11 ACTIVE SENIORS
ActiveSeniorsaremembersaged18+whoholdtheminimumBronzeMedallion.ActiveSeniorsareabletocompletepatrolsandcompete inarangeofcarnivals,culminating intheannualNationaltitles.Forthosewho are less competitive, being an activemember is an opportunity to perform a communityservicewithlike-mindedpeoplewhobecomegoodfriends,whilealsokeepingfit.
12 PATROLS
PatrollingthebeachisthemostimportantroleoftheClub.Ourfirstpriorityistoprovideandmaintainasafebeachenvironmentforthosemembersofthepublicwhowishtoswimorrelaxatthebeach.OurPatrolseasonrunsfromSeptemberuntilApril,withPatrol teamsmanningthebeachonSaturday1pm-5pmandSundays9am–5pm.WealsopatrolonPublicHolidays,withhoursofpatrolextendedonSchoolHolidays.MembersareinvolvedinrollingrostersforPatrolinallocatedPatrolTeams.ThereisalsoaPatrolTeamthatarededicatedtoprovidingWaterSafetyfortheNippersProgramonSundaymorningsfrom9am–11am.
13 ANNUAL AWARDS
AtourAnnualPresentationNight, the followingAwardsarepresented.Someawardwinnersare thennominatedforthecorrespondingcategoryatBranchLevel,forpotentialrecognitionatthatlevel.

18 WHAT IS NIPPERS?
Ifyou’rethinkingofintroducingyourchildtolifesaving,thenJuniorActivitiesisforyou.JuniorActivitiesis open to children from the age five up to 13 years (age for a season is calculated as of midnightSeptember30).Childrenmustbeatleast5yearsofageonorbeforemidnight30thSeptember2017tobeoldenoughtoparticipate in the 2017/2018 Nipper season. The table below shows age groups based on themonth/yearofthechild’sbirth:
Surflifesavingisanamazingactivityforgrowingachild’sconfidence,knowledgeandskillsinthebeachenvironment.Notonlywillyourchildhavefunandmeetnewfriends,theywillbecomepartofaniconicorganisationthathasservedtheAustraliancommunityforover100years.The program is focused on play, participation and fun. It offers an educational pathway through thedeliveryof the JuniorDevelopmentResourceKitwhich isdesignedtoensurechildrenhave funat thebeachwhileparticipating in lessons thatwilldevelop themtobecomeaknowledgeableparticipant inbothlifesavingandsport.Before the start of the JuniorActivities season each child is required to complete a Preliminary SkillsAssessmentdesignedtoensure thateachchilddemonstratesastandardofcompetence inanaquaticenvironment.ThesearecoordinatedbyourJuniorActivatesteam,howeveranaccreditedswimcoachcansignoffontheproficiencyusingtheformincludedinSection23.

PriortoparticipatinginthewaterbasedaspectsoftheSundayNippersProgram,everyparticipantmustcompletepreliminaryevaluationsinthepoolandonthebeach.
Before being able to compete in any Carnivals, every nipper must also complete CompetitionEvaluations.
Atthestartofeachseason(ontheweekendofSignon)werunthePreliminaryEvaluationsatthepool.Once the Nippers Program starts on the beach, we then conduct the Beach Proficiencies andCompetitionEvaluationsforthosewhoarereadyfortheassessment.Duringtheseassessments inthewater,weworkwithstrictWaterSafetyratiosbetweenWaterSafetypersonnelandthenippers.Ifthereareanynipperswhohaveconcernsabouttheevaluations,weareabletoprovide1:1watersafety.

WadeRace: Thewade race isheld in theyoungeragegroups. It involves competitors startingon thebeachandrunningouttoaWaterSafetyOfficerinkneedeepwater.Thecompetitorsthenwade/duckdive/swimparallel tothebeachuptoanotherWaterSafetyOfficer,wheretheyturnandrun intothebeachandacrossthefinishline.
WadeRelay:TeamsoffourraceoneatatimethroughthesameWadeRaceCourse.Runnersreturntothestartandtagthenextpersonintheirteamwhothendoesthesameuntilallfourhavecompetedthewadecourse.
CameronRelay:Thisisateameventinvolvingoneswimmer,arunner,oneboardpaddlerandanotherrunner.TheycompeteoveranIronmancourse.Theorderofthelegs(ieswimorboardfirst)maychangeandisdecidedbyadrawpriortotheevent.
BeachSprint:Competitorssprintraceoverastraightbeachtrackapproximately70metreslong.

Duringtheseason,thereareafewSundayswherethetideistoohighforustoaccessthebeach.Whydon’tweJustmoveittoSaturdayafternoon?IfthetideishighonaSundayafternoon,itwillbeequallylowonaSaturdayafternoon.IfonaSaturdaythetideislessthan0.8m,youneedapackedlunchtogettothewater’sedge,andonceyouarethereitismuddy, shallow, and the shark cans are super close. Sure you can still do some beach events, butwateractivitiesareveryrestricted.Our calendar for the 2017-18 seasonhas three dateswherewewill have to changenippers to theSaturdayafternoonbeforeduetohightides.TheseSaturdaysare:21October–nipperswillbe2pm-4pmfollowedbyaBBQandsocialgettogether2December–nipperswillbe2pm-4pmfollowedbyaBBQandsocialgettogether17February–nipperswillbe2pm-4pmfollowedbyaBBQandsocialgettogetherWhynotmoveNippersupinfrontoftheCaravanPark?This has been investigated, and is possible, but the logistical issues of relocating all nippers to thenorthern beach (along with water safety, parents, resources, boards etc) means it is not a realisticoption.Whilethisseemslikeapotentialsolution,itisverylogisticallychallenging.The other thing to consider is that every Nipper is completing an SLS award as part of the NipperProgram. Ineachawardthere isaneducationcomponent,which involvesdiscussionandworkoff thebeach (eg CPR sessions). The high tide days provide the opportunity to complete the educationcomponent– itmustbecompletedby31December, so thesedaysareveryhandy forproviding thattime.

CRAFTANDEQUIPMENTINVESTMENTSTRATEGY2017-2018OneofthebigchallengesfortheClubistheprovisionofallcraftforusebymembers.Whileeveryonepaysmembership,therealityisthatmuchofthisClubincomegoestowardsinsurancesandothercosts.While theClubalsogenerates income through theoperationof theBarandFunctionarea, runningaSurfLifesavingClubisanexpensivebusiness.The Club is committed to renewal of Club resources and the Management Committee would besupportiveofanyadditionalfundraisingventuresmemberswantedtopropose.As a commitment to themembers, the Club will continue to purchase new boards (mals and juniorboards)annually.In2016-17theClubpurchasedfiveJMsmallerboards(twoboardrescuenewboards,threenormalboards)andoneBoardRescuemal,withthetotalvalueofthisinvestmentintheorderof$7000.To further demonstrate support for allmembership, the Club has been developing new strategies toenabletheacquisitionofmorenewequipmentforuseattheClub.WeareexcitedtointroduceanewPartneredInvestmentProgram(PIP)tosupportourmembershipwiththe support of major club sponsors, that would see direct links between their investment and ourmembership.TheProgramwouldinvolve:
a. TheClubwillformasupplyalliancewithselectedcraftmanufacturersofkeyequipment(e.gNippersfibreglassboard–approx$980,U14–seniormals–approx$2000);
b. ClubmembersarethenabletonominatetobeapartofthePIP,wheretheycommittoa33% investment in thevalueof theequipment.TheClubwouldcommit to33%andfundsfromthesponsorwouldconstitutethebalanceoftheinvestment;
c. The equipment is then purchased new and the sponsor’s logo and the Club’sacknowledgementofthesponsor’sgeneroussupportwouldbeemblazonedonthecraft;
d. Thecraft,forsoleusebythemember,isalsoidentifiedwiththeClubmember’snameandacknowledgestheirpartnershipwiththesponsoroverathree-yearperiod;
e. ThecraftremainsattheClubaspartoftheClub’assetregisterandattheendofthethree-year period, the member is able to elect to purchase the board for a nominal price, orreinvest in another new piece of equipment. If the clubmember elects to reinvest againwithnewcraft,the“old”craftbecomespartofourClubstockforthosememberswhoarenotabletobeinvolvedintheprogram.
ThebenefitsofthePartneredInvestmentPrograminclude:1. The Program enables the Club to formalise a greater system of asset renewal and encourages a
senseofresponsibilityfromthemembershipwithregardtoClubequipment;2. Currentmemberswhoaspiretousenewequipment,butarerestrictedfinancially,areprovidedwith
