Year 11 Hospitality- Crown Perth Tour

Last week the Year 11 Hospitality Students visited the Crown Perth Resort to learn more about hospitality and tourism, and the possibility of future job prospects. We were divided into two groups and each went separate ways, covering the grounds of the Crown Perth and visiting the features on offer. We looked at the different rooms and suites which ranged from $350 a night to $18,000 a night!

We also visited several restaurants within Crown Perth, learning about the different menus and job roles. The groups met and to had lunch at the Atrium which was a buffet style menu. The Atrium provided many cuisines and dishes for us, ranging from different cultures, including Japanese, Chinese, French, Korean and Italian. The food was amazing and the desserts were delicious. The excursion was a terrific experience which granted us an insight and a developed interest towards the notable job roles for the future, related to fine dining cuisine, hospitality and tourism. Solar Car Challenge

This term, Year 8 Course 3 and Extension Science classes have been building and testing solar powered model cars. The culmination of this occurred on Wednesday as students raced their cars against each other in order to determine who had constructed the fastest cars.

Each class raced in heats during their Science lesson and the winning group from each class raced off against each other at lunchtime. Class winners were all rewarded with Krispy Kreme doughnuts. The race format was the best of three race, where teams needed to change lanes after each heat. After the third race in the final, there were three out of four teams tied. As the race began, the team from Mr Woodhouse’s class, Kayde Sherwood, Carlicia Adereni and Electra Even-Ware, had a slight lead until their car came to a sudden halt after experiencing some technical difficulties. The other two teams hurtled past with Mr Barry’s team arriving at the finish line in first place. The team, consisting of Aylah Moore, Jillian Johnson and Ella Foley will represent the College at the Northern Schools Synergy Solar Car Challenge Heats. This will take place on Tuesday the 17 th March at Warwick Senior High School.

Year 8 Soccer Academy On Wednesday, 4th March, the Year 8 Soccer Academy students begun their journey towards Busselton for the Soccer Academy Camp. The students participated in 5-aside training and games at the amazing Fox Football Fives centre in Floreat before heading to Claremont Aquatic Centre for a recovery session and Water Polo experience. The students rested up on the bus ride to Busselton Catholic Youth Camp where they engaged in night activities.

On Thursday, the students had a tough training session at Bovell Park in Busselton, before a recovery session at Busselton Jetty. The male soccer academy played a tough but encouraging game against South West Phoenix Football Club in Bunbury. The camp finished on Friday, with team-building games in the morning and a bus ride to Hillary’s Boat Harbour for lunch, before heading back to the College. All students gained incredible soccer experience and knowledge during the camp. It was pleasing to see all students engaged with all activities and a willingness to improve their abilities. This camp was an enjoyable experience and I would like to thank the students for their commitment to improvement and positivity throughout the camp. I would also like to thank Miss Billam for her time and effort with assisting and supporting myself and the students on camp. Mr Jeremy Carbone Acting Soccer Academy Coordinator

Covid-19 Corona Virus Update At Wednesday’s athletics assembly students were briefed about Covid-19 issues. The key messages were:

• Currently we need to be confident in maintaining our daily routines in a calm manner, whilst remembering to practice good hygiene habits.

• Student, Staff and Families travelling overseas are requested to inform the College.

• We have an important role in reducing the spread and impact of the virus. Students were reminded to practice hygiene habits at school including:

• Frequently washing your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water, or using an alcohol-based hand gel.

• Avoid touching mouth and nose • If coughing or sneezing, covering your nose and mouth with a paper tissue

or flexed elbow, dispose of the tissue immediately after use and perform hand hygiene.

• Avoiding close contact with anyone if you, or they, have a cold or flu-like symptoms (maintain a distance of at least 1 metre).

To ensure all students have access to soap in the toilets, new larger soap dispensers have been installed in all school toilets. They are filled with soap each night. All toilets and surfaces are cleaned thoroughly every night. As an additional measure to encourage good hygiene, eight hand sanitiser dispensers have been installed throughout the school. Parents and students travelling overseas are requested to write to the respective Assistant Deputy Principal informing them the details of the country or countries you will visit, including those that you transit through, and your departure and return dates. We will keep a record of your travel to endeavour to be in touch with families with any advice we have been given by CEWA or the state and Australian governments. While the advice regarding travel restrictions and self-isolation requirements for students and staff continues to evolve, the following outline is intended to provide some clarity and certainty – particularly as parents plans for the upcoming school holidays. Advice regarding countries identified as “Higher Risk” or “Moderate Risk” Students or staff who have travelled to or transited through China, Iran, Italy or South Korea MUST isolate for 14 days before attending school. If students or staff display symptoms they should not attend school and seek medical advice. All returned passengers who have travelled in or transited through “higher risk” countries or a country considered to pose a “moderate risk” of transmission in the last 14 days should self-monitor for symptoms and immediately isolate themselves if they become unwell. Higher Risk Moderate Risk Must isolate for 14 days prior to attending Can attend school, but self-monitor • Italy • Cambodia • Mainland China • Hong Kong

• Iran • Indonesia (including Bali) • Republic of Korea • Japan • Singapore • Thailand The Australian Government continues to monitor international public health information and may amend travel restrictions, health screening and self-quarantine requirements. Parents and staff who undertake personal international travel are asked to consider their preparedness to self-quarantine for 14 days following their arrival in Australia should this be required. ACC Swim Team News Our carnival preparations have stepped up in the last week with a very worthwhile Training Day conducted on Tuesday, at Claremont Pool. Head Coach Mr Carbone organised a terrific day which combined a technical training session with a practice meet against Mater Dei College. We concluded the day with some friendly water polo games and these were thoroughly enjoyed by members of the team.

On Wednesday morning at the swimming assembly we announced our swim captains. We congratulate Sienna Grossman and Aleisha Carpene on this well-deserved acknowledgement of their commitment to our swimming program over the years, and wish them well leading our team at the upcoming ACC carnival.

Project Compassion Stories: Second week of Lent In Cambodia, one in eight people live below the poverty line. This week through Project Compassion we learn about Phany (pronounded Parn-ee). Pharny is struggling to earn a living as a farmer in Cambodia. She was forced to leave her daughter behind in the village to take up construction work in the city. Through a Caritas funded program, Phany learnt new farming techniques which enabled her to get a better yield from her vegetable crops and to conserve water in her drought-stricken region. Phany’s community also took part in training in health, nutrition, hygiene and disaster preparedness, arming them with better strategies to cope with environmental changes. You can watch a short film about Phany’s story on the link below. Let’s Go Further, Together!
