Key vocabulary and concepts
Architecture The art or practice of designing and
constructing buildings.
Mosaic
A picture or pattern produced by
arranging together small pieces of stone,
tile, glass, etc.
Ceramic
Ceramics are hard objects that people
make from materials such as clay. In
general they are strong, although they
may be brittle, or easily breakable for
example if you drop a ceramic mug on the
floor it is likely to smash.
Barcelona
The capital city of Spain, where most of
Gaudi’s work was created and displayed.
Design ideas
These are plans that you plan to carry
out within a final piece, in art we often
create many design ideas before
deciding on a favourite.
Sketching
Sketching is drawing lightly, making a
rough sketch refers to light pencil lines
mapping out your work.
Shading
Shading is adding darker areas to your
drawing using a pencil, this is done by
adding pressure to create a darker line.
Transparent
This means allowing light to pass through
so that objects behind can be distinctly
seen. For example watercolour paints are
transparent because they are used with
water.
Layers
Layering in art means to build up, for
example when painting you might add two
or three layers for a brighter outcome.
Gradient
A gradient is often seen in drawing, it is
where shading gradually gets either
lighter or darker. Highlights - shadows.

LO: Demonstrate your understanding of mosaics and how they are made, can you
create a drawings of mosaics in the style of Antoni Gaudi?
Quiz time. Check your knowledge!
Name the images of products and materials we have been using - state in the box what
we used them for.

Task one – as we have seen before, this is Antoni Gaudi’s salamander. Make a copy of
the image using pencil and shading.
Stretch and challenge– Add shading to your work so you have a light, mid and dark
side. Remember to use you pencil in the same direction. Use this gradient below to
ensure you’ve used a range of tones.
Antoni Gaudi’s salamander
Make a sketch of Gaudi’s salamander here.
6
Task two: create two design ideas below of your own salamander mosaic design –
research the work of Gaudi to help you.
Stretch and challenge – add colour to both Salamanders with colouring pencils /
crayons. Remember to shade in one direction only

Lesson one exit ticket – colour theory recap
Which two colours do we need to make green? ______________________________
Which two colours do we need to make orange? _____________________________
Which three colours do we need to make brown? ____________________________
Lesson 2 - Choosing a design idea and creating your final salamander
mosaic drawing. Do Now
1. Circle the correct answers Gaudi was known for his…

____________________________________________________________
3. Name Gaudi’s most famous piece of Architecture. Hint this piece remains
unfinished despite Gaudi devoting 40 years to it.
_________________________________________
LO: combine both of your previous design ideas and create a third and final mosaic
salamander.
Task one – Development task.
Development is adapting and changing you work to make improvements and overall
enhancing the design. You will need your two completed salamander design ideas from
last lesson with you.
On the next page you will need to sketch an outline of your own salamander – use the
examples below to help you. You then need to use design aspects from your previous
design ideas for one final outcome. You must add colour and shade in one direction only
(if you do not have access to colour then I expect exceptional pencil shading)
Stretch and challenge yourself - Develop your idea to be more detailed like the
work of Gaudi – add some small mark making on top of your mosaic design you
could do this using a darker coloured pencil such as dark blue or dark green
Key words:
Mosaic
Sagrada familia
Nature

Here you will create your final developed salamander design.

mosaics! Here are some images to help you, you could make one tower or a collection of
towers! You must create your tower and begin adding mosaic designs – use your
salamander designs to help you.
Stretch and challenge – add a minimum of two extra features to your 3D tower. You
could create a small flap and decorate this to be a door, window
