Year 5 Dear Parents/Carers,

Hello, we can hardly believe we are issuing work for week 11 and 12. We do hope all of you are safe and well.

We’ve put a bit more in this pack, in case you wanted a bit to keep you going J As usual we have included relevant activities for English, Maths, science and RE and we’ve also included some Geography. We would usually be having our continents day over this period, Year 5 study South America so we have also assigned you some tasks relating to this.

If you fancy dressing up and sending us the photos in your South American costumes we would love to see them!

When we finally get back to school we really look forward to hearing how you’ve all be getting on. It was lovely to see so many of you on the zoom chat! Let’s hope the sun continues to shine!

Thank you for the fabulous work that you’ve done so far – your efforts have not gone unnoticed.

It’s so near the end of term now – time has flown and we are sad to see you go. Thank you for being such a wonderful group of children and best of luck in Year 6. Best wishes and God bless,

The Year 5 Team.

Rainforests

Rainforests are large forests that have tall trees, warm weather and lots of different species of animals living there. They are called rainforests because they get lots of rain. They are found in hot places such as Africa, Asia and Australia. The largest rainforest is called the Amazon in South America, which reaches over many countries, but is mostly in Brazil. It is made up of different layers:

• The forest floor

Dark and humid (damp and hot). Very little sun reaches the forest floor as the leaves of the canopy block the sunlight. Smaller animals live here, such as slugs, scorpions and worms.

• The understory

This layer is found under the canopy. It doesn't get much sunlight. It is home to animals such as jaguars, gorillas, elephants and snakes.

• The canopy

This where the branches and leaves of the trees are so close together that they touch and join up to form like an umbrella. This is home to most of the animals and plants of the rainforest such as toucans, sloths, howler monkeys and fig trees.

• The emergent layer

At the top is the emergent layer. It has the tallest trees and is sunny, wet and windy. Only a few animals live here such as bats, birds and butterflies.

Answers

Forest floor: It is hot and humid; very little grows here. There's less than 2% sunlight and I'm covered in a thin layer of fallen leaves which rot away quickly. Understory: It is dark here; only insect, frogs and snakes live here amongst the few plants that don't need much sunlight. Canopy: It is extremely high up here; almost 30m off the ground! Here most trees stop growing and up to 90% of rainforest creatures live here because it is sunny and rich in fruit and seeds. Emergent layer: This is where the enormous trees thrust themselves above the dense canopy. Temperature: I am the word to describe a degree of heat. Deforestation: I am the action of clearing a wide area of trees. Sustainable: Able to be maintained at a certain rate or level. Climate: I am the weather conditions prevailing in an area in general or over a long period. Biodiversity: I am the number of different species. Commercial farming: I am led by large companies who need to produce food and produce on a large scale for the wider world.

Task 2 Use as many words as you can from the vocabulary challenge to write a short section about the tropical rainforests. For example: Tropical rainforests are made up of distinct layers: forest floor, understory, canopy and emergent. Without a doubt, these tropical rainforests are as stunning as they are necessary for life however, as a species we are damaging these wonderful habitats through commercial farming.

Task 3 The subjunctive is a verb form or mood used to express things that could or should happen. It is used to express wishes, hopes, commands, demands or suggestions. The subjunctive isn't used in English very often. Nowadays is usually replaced with modal verbs such as might, could or should. For example: If commercial farming were to stop, consumers would suffer. Write your own sentences using the subjunctive form.

Task 4 Should Deforestation Be Stopped Completely? Write a balanced argument, discussing both sides to the above question. Information you may need to consider in your argument: Approximately 30% of the Earth is covered by trees.

• Rainforests cover only 6% of the Earth but they are home to 50% of all plant and animal species. In just four square miles you might find:1500 flowering plants, 400 species of birds, 150 species of butterflies and 750 species of trees.

• Rainforests get their name from the heavy rains that fall almost every day. Trees soak up the water and help prevent erosion. Without them the soil would wash away.

• Rainforests are often known as the ‘lungs of the Earth’. The trees absorb harmful carbon dioxide and produce 20% of the oxygen in Earth’s atmosphere.

• Deforestation occurs when trees are cut down across a wide area which is then permanently cleared for another use.

What is a Rainforest?

Rainforests are huge forests that have a large amount of precipitation. They are found in all continents of the world apart from Antarctica (due to the temperature). There are two types of rainforest: tropical (in the tropical, warm zone near the Equator) and temperate (in the temperate zone further away from the Equator). Most rainforests are tropical, with tall trees, warm climates and lots of rain. It can rain one inch of rain per day in some! The largest rainforest is the Amazon Rainforest in South America.

The Canopy

The rainforest trees are in such close proximity, that the branches and leaves at the top of the trees touch each other and form what is referred to as ‘The Canopy’, which acts a bit like a roof for the forest. The canopy can be approximately 30m above the ground. The canopy is hotter and drier during the day than other parts of the rainforest so animals that live there have adapted. Some have loud calls in order to communicate in the thick foliage and some are able to jump from tree to tree.

The Forest Floor This is dark and humid because of the canopy, but still is a very important part of the ecosystem. The floor is where dead animals and plants decompose and all of the nutrients and materials are recycled. Also, the larger animals are found here including tapirs, elephants, tigers and jaguars.

Fact File in Numbers • 2% of the Earth’s surface

is covered in rainforest.

• 50% of the plants and animals of the world live in rainforests.

• ¼5 of our fresh water is found in a rainforest in the Amazon Basin. • ¼ of natural medicines

have been found in rainforests. • 70% + of the plants that are

used to treat cancer are found only in the tropical rainforests.

Why are they so important? Rainforests do a few things that are critical to our life on Earth. One important thing that rainforests do is they use photosynthesis to take in carbon dioxide and make oxygen which we need to breathe and survive. This is why they are called ‘The Lungs of The Earth’. So, how can we manage without them?

They help keep our weather system stable by absorbing carbon dioxide, creating rainfall and keeping temperature stable. They also affect the water cycle as they hold so much water which condenses into the atmosphere.

Questions 1. Name the two types of rainforest.

2. In the fact file, the author mentions ‘fresh water’. What do you think fresh water is?

3. Near the end of the text, why does the author say rainforests are like the ‘Lungs of the Earth’?

4. In ‘The Canopy’ section, what does the author mean by ‘close proximity’?

5. A rainforest is an ‘ecosystem’. What is an ecosystem?

6. It is very crowded and leafy in the canopy. How do some animals communicate when they cannot see each other?

Answers 1. Name the two types of rainforest.

Temperate and tropical

2. In the fact file, the author mentions ‘fresh water’. What do you think fresh water is?

Children’s own responses, such as: I think fresh water is water that doesn’t contain salt like seawater does. It is the kind of water that is found in lakes and rivers rather than oceans. 3. Near the end of the text, why does the author say rainforests are like the ‘Lungs

of the Earth’?

They take in carbon dioxide and give out oxygen (the opposite to our lungs) OR they ‘give’ us oxygen to breathe.

4. In ‘The Canopy’ section, what does the author mean by ‘close proximity’?

Near to each other

5. A rainforest is an ‘ecosystem’. What is an ecosystem? A community where plants, animals and the environment all rely on each other.

6. It is very crowded and leafy in the canopy. How do some animals communicate because of this when they cannot see each other?

Loud calls

7. Why is the forest floor dark? The canopy blocks the light.

8. Name one way that the rainforests affect our life on Earth. One from: weather/climate, produces oxygen, absorbs carbon dioxide, the water cycle

9. In the Fact File in Numbers, why has the author emphasised the word ‘only’. To show how important the rainforests are. It also makes you wonder what we would do without them if there is a cancer cure there.

10. Read the last line…what is your opinion and why? Open ended: discuss and include issues such as carbon dioxide/oxygen, medicines and cures for cancer and animals species.

Science Please read the information and write a short summary in your workbook. As an extension you can create a fire safety poster to help people to stay safe during a time where wildfires are happening.

Wildfires

What is a wildfire? A wildfire also known as a wildland fire, forest fire, vegetation fire, grass fire, peat fire, bushfire (in Australia), or hill fire is an uncontrolled fire often occurring in wildland areas, but which can also consume houses or agricultural resources. Wildfires often begin unnoticed, but they spread quickly igniting brush, trees and homes. What causes a wildfire? Common causes of wildfires include lightning, human carelessness, arson, volcano eruption, and pyroclastic cloud from active volcano. Heat waves, droughts, and cyclical climate changes such as El Niño can also have a dramatic effect on the risk of wildfires. Although, more than four out of every five wildfires are caused by people. Where can wildfires occur? Wildfires can occur anywhere, but are common in the forested areas of the United States and Canada. They are also susceptible in many places around the world, including much of the vegetated areas of Australia as well as in the Western Cape of South Africa. The climates are sufficiently moist to allow the growth of trees, but feature extended dry, hot periods. Fires are particularly prevalent in the summer and fall, and during droughts when fallen branches, leaves, and other material can dry out and become highly flammable. Wildfires are also common in grasslands and scrublands. What are the Santa Ana winds? The Santa Ana winds are hot, dry winds that aggravate the fire danger in forests and bush lands. These winds characteristically appear in Southern California and Northern Baja California weather during autumn and early winter. In southern California, under the influence of Santa Ana winds, wildfires can move at tremendous speeds, up to 40 miles in a single day, consuming up to 1,000 acres per hour. Dense clouds of burning embers push ahead of the flames crossing firebreaks without a problem.

Page 53: Year 5 Dear Parents/Carers, · Year 5 Dear Parents/Carers, Hello, we can hardly believe we are issuing work for week 11 and 12. We do hope all of you are safe and well. We’ve put

What is a fire tornado? A fire tornado or fire whirl is just a tornado made of fire. It happens when certain conditions (depending on air temperature and currents), acquires a vertical vorticity and forms a whirl, or a tornado-like effect. Fire tornadoes may be whirlwinds separated from the flames, either within the burn area or outside it. A fire tornado can make fires more dangerous.

How do firefighters put out the wildfires? Firefighters use a tool known as a pulaski. Its a combination of an axe and hoe used to dig a fireline. A fireline is a strip of land from which all brush and debris have been cleared to rob a wildfire of its fuel. Firefighters also use hotshots and smoke jumpers to clear a large path in a big circle around the fire so the blaze is contained in a ring of dirt. When the fire reaches this area, it runs out of fuel and starves to death. If the fire is too large, however, planes and helicopters fly overhead, dropping water and special chemicals that smother the flames. This pink, fire-retardant chemical is called sky jell-o.

Pentecost

Please answer the questions in your work book.

How are we needed to build up the Church?

Why is the church called to welcome everyone?

Matthew 16:13-20 King James Version (KJV) 13 When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man?

14 And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.

15 He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?

16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.

17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.

18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
